IChat vs. Skype

I have been using Skype for one year almost pretty much daily to audio and video chat with friends in Nigeria and Guatemala. I use Skype because the quality of iChat over the exact same connections is unusable. I am extremely disappointed with it.

Hi,
I am not sure that is a Question

... video chat with friends in Nigeria and Guatemala. ...
I would ask what Internet Speed that they are getting in those places.
iChat NEEDS at 128kbps Upload speed to Video chat and 256kbps is a more realistic "Real World" figure.
This upload speed also needs to be the portion of the available Bandwidth if there is more than one computer or Games console using the LAN at that end.
Other factors such as the iChat Versions involved and the setting on the Macs if running Leopard or Lower can also make a difference.

  • Webcam for ichat or Skype?

Hi, could anyone give me any advice on a good webcam to use with iChat or Skype?
    Thanks, John

    Hi
http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/ can be a starting point.
With a Mac Pro that has USB 2.0 ports you can get any UVC (USB Video Class) camera as the Mac OS has included a Generic driver for these since OS 10.4.9 (Although it does not always give you all the options Vista might.
UVC tends also to be known as Vista Certified.
They include the X-Box 360 camera which gives quite a Good picture.
The Link I posted links to other site that sell the cameras.
Not all of those sell brand new cameras. (I spotted a Firewire Web Cam on sale from Amazon in the list)
A Firewire camcorder can function as a Web cam without the need for further drivers as well.

  • I want to Use iChat with Skype to Videoconference several people

I want to video conference in my niece in New Zealand (PC using Skype) with iChat and the rest of my Mac family stateside.
I have Skype for Mac running and I have the iChat AV running. Any chance to hook in the Skype User with the iChat multi-pane video conference?
It looks like iChat only accepts iChat and AIM but not Skype. My niece apparently cannot get AIM in New Zealand.
Any clever help would be appreciated.

I want to use iChat for Skype as well. I want one chat client for all my communications. That was the point of iChat in the beginning, wasn't it? Hopefully, Apple will jump on the ball and support the best way for us common folk to communicate internationally. The supported Aim when they were king, why not the new king?
I stinks that I can not use the great app, because one no Skype but two I don't know anyone else that uses .mac.

I am looking to create a clickable iChat and Skype link in iWeb where the user would be able to click on the image and it would automatically open up Skype or iChat depending on where they clicked...is this possible to do? through HTML Snippet?
    Thanks Again for everyones help.

I found a previous post that talked about it but could not find the code to accomplish this..
Here is the link where the iChat embed is doing exactly what I would like to do.

  • Isight is not working on ichat and skype, however will work on photo booth and imovie.

My isight will not work on ichat or skype, saying that there is no camera connected. isight will work in photo booth and imovie. It shows up in the system profiler. Have tried resetting SMC. Help?

    (1) Here is how I would proceed to isolate the underlying problem that requires corrective action.
    • Shut down everything.
    • Then restart modem and allow its self-test to complete.
    • Then restart router or wireless access point (if you have them) and allow self-test to complete.
    • Then restart Mac.
    • Use  > Software Update... (Update your Apple software if not current.)
    • Then test Photo Booth or iMovie with no other apps else running to ensure they still work.
    • Then quit your test app and try iChat with no other apps else running.
    • If iChat works, quit iChat and try Skype with no other apps else running.
    (2) If iChat works but Skype does not,
    • Verify that you are using the latest version of Skype that is compatible with your OS X (10.5.8) Mac.
    • Update if necessary.
    • Then test Skype again with no other apps else running.
    • If Skype problems remain but your camera works with everything else, Skype's comprehensive support system should best be able to help you use their product with your system.
    Start here:  https://support.skype.com/
Or, click this link for help specifically related to Mac video calls.
You can also search or post for help with your problem in Skype's dedicated Skype Discussions for Mac.  The Skype users who post there may have already solved the same problem.
If nothing else works, you can even sign in and ask for email help directly from Skype's Technical Support people.
    (3) If you still have trouble with more than one app, you may need to use Disk Utility to:
    • repair permissions,
    • repair your disk,
    • or even reinstall Mac OS.
If you reinstall OS X 10.5, use the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update to return to the latest version in one update step.

  • Ichat or skype for voice lesson

My wife is a singing teacher in NYC and has a student in LA. She would like to be able to do a singing lesson with her student in LA. She has a new 2.4 GHz macbook and her student also has a Mac.
    1. Which would be better ichat or skype especially the audio and video quality?
    2. We also have a external iSight camera that we use on our G5 imac. Can we use this on the Macbook and override the internal isight? I am assuming the external one is better. Should she invest in a higher end web camera and if so any recommendations?
    3. As she needs to be able to clearly listen to her student, should she use a headset or external speakers?
This is all new to us and we are hoping others have investigated this and can offer some advice.
    Jerry

    Hi
    1. Mac to Mac use iChat, you will find with Skype you might get feedback.
    2. You can but i would use the internal cam as the pic is a bit better(depending on bandwith)
    3. Try and see what she prefers.
If you would like to test you can connect to me defcom1 .mac account.

  • Why does my IChat or Skype causes by contact's programs to crash

I am experiencing problems using either iChat or Skype that when I contact an individual, their iChat or Skpe crashes and we lose connection.  This individual has no problem Skyping with other individuals.  I have the latest Skype for my operating system which is 2.8.0.866.  I have been able to Skype with this individual who is using a PC for over a year with no problems.  Is it my video?  It seems to be working correctly.  I even updated my Flash Player thinking this was a problem.  Any suggestions?

Good to know I'm not alone with this particular problem, and that it probably isn't my particular phone. Curiously, when I first installed the new version of PCSuite - it told me that I needed to install some kind of plugin for PCSuite onto my phone. No idea what, and cannot imagine. At that point, though, I do not think PCSuite was crashing, just giving the strange message.
However, my phone, after its firmware upgrade did keep trying to download something mysterious, and was giving me a message about incompatible software. I solved that problem by deleting a couple of unknown apps (just alphanumeric gobbledegook) found through references on these forums. I wish I could remember the precise messages I was receiving. Phone itself now works fine, however - and no more strange messages, either from the phone or from PCSuite - just the PCSuite alleged crash. Uninstalling and reinstalling PCSuite, and its related apps (eg connectivity wotsit, cable driver wotsit) does not help.
Sounds like if we could just rename or bump up some version number reference within the PCSuite program and its related installs, we might solve the problem.
By the way - does anyone know where you can get an up to date PCSuite Cleaner. Seems to have disappeared from the Nokia site?Message Edited by ozerdavid on 07-Dec-200711:39 AM

  • ISight-iChat-AIM-Skype review

I have an iMac with a built-in iSight webcam. After working with connections in various countries over several days I find that the best iMac to PC connections are through Skype, not AIM.
AIM connections were very pixilated and had a strong audio echo effects. But Skype did not have these problems.
iChat to iChat worked well (Mac to Mac) but very few of my friends overseas have Macs so we've been using Skype with good results. iChat to AIM was quite poor and I gave on on that.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Pelerei
Launch iChat and check your iChat > Preferences > Video > Microphone Choices Bar. Set it to "Internal Microphone" and try again.
If the setting is already at "Internal", change the setting to anything else and immediately set it back to "Internal."
If that does not fix your problem, you should next check to be sure there is a check mark next to the iChat > Video > Microphone Enabled menu item.

  • IChat v Skype - 'fail to respond' etc

I have been using Skype on my Mac for a long time, and recently decided to try out iChat AV with friends living overseas. They have Macs too.
I find iChat has superior audio capabilities but it has serious problems with such issues as 'user failed to respond' or 'insufficient bandwidth'. These are problems that occur like 70% of the time and I know it is not a matter of router settings as I could sometimes get iChat to work just great. I have checked out all the postings in this forum regarding these issues and tried all the fixes but still get these problems. They do not happen all the time. Only sometimes! By the way, I am using ADSL 1500 Mbs as are my friends and I know speed/bandwidth are more than sufficient.
So, now its back to good old Skype (never had connection problems from day one). Even Gizmo is good too. Apple seriously needs to work on these issues real quick. They need to learn from Skype.

  • Built Isight black image  with yahoo ichat or skype

The cam works fine in Photobooth. I tested it on iMovie and it works there too. In Ichat, skype or yahoo a black screen appears.
Any ideas why it stopped working? Ithink that is a preferences o something like that.
    Thnaks in advance

    Hi,
Go to System Preferences > Network.
Choose the connection method you are using in the second drop down. (Or click on it in the list)
Select the TCP/IP tab if it not the front one.
    This should list your IP.
It possibly Says "Using DHCP" rather than anything else if still at default.
    It lists the Sbnet Mask
DNS servers and the "router" IP (This will noramlly be the modem unless you have a router as well)
Make a note of these numbers.
The "Router" Ip is probably the same one that you typed intoa Web Browser to access the dset up pages
It is just a question of turning Off DHCP in the Modem
On the TCP/IP tab you then need to set it to "Manually" where it says USing DHCP now.
Then you need to type in the IP for your computer. (It can be anything between .1 and .255 as the last number EXCEPT for the number the "router" has)
So for a Linksys for example the "router" IP and set up access IP is 192.168.1.1
Under DHCP your computer may well get 192.168.1.100
The Subnet Mask will be 255.255.255.0
    So you will type
192.168.1.xxx where xxx is any number but 1 in this case.
Then Subnet Mask and type 255.255.255.0
DNS servers are whatever was there before or what your ISPs DNS servers are.
Then type in the "Router" (For this imaginary Linksys it is 192.168.1.1)
Use the same link I oringinally posted and choose the App you want to have ports open for in the second page rather than iChat
The IP to type in when setting up Static routing is the one you choose for your computer.
It can be anything like I said except for the IP the "Router" (Modem) already has for it's set up pages.

  • IChat to Skype?

    HI,
Just bought my 80yr mum a mac mini, bought a webcam and set her up an AIM account. Opened iChat and am now videoing from my mac to hers perfectly ( I didn't expect anything less!).
We have family out in the States who are on PC's and are using Skype. Is there any way she can video chat using her configuration?
    Many thanks in advance.

No - different protocols: just install Skype for her, it's free and straighforward enough. You can have both running at the same time (obviously you can only actually use one at a time, but you can have both running in case someone calls on either).

  • IChat or Skype? (Mac on one end, PC on other end)

I have a similar situation as:
"need video connection with daughter in Europe"
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=713135&tstart=45
I want to setup my parents (technology-naive) with a Mac Mini (w/iSight camera) over cable-modem line. Their daughter is on a PC, she also has to get a webcam.
The above thread indicates Skype is a solution, but the below thread
    http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=28544
..claims there are problems with audio going away after several minutes. Skype support isn't responding.
Can I get some referrals to documented working solutions, where there is a Mac (OS X) on one end & PC on the other end?

For Mac to PC video connections I think that Skype is currently the best solution. The Mac user needs Skype for Mac and the PC user needs Skype for PC.
But there are so many variables that enter into determining the quality or success of a particular video connection that it's impossible to guarantee a satisfactory solution. You're welcome to test with me on Skype for PC at jawestonskype or at jawestonskype2.

  • NEED HELP!! ICHAT & SKYPE video screwed. QTPRO&ImovieHD video fine!

Unable to get help from apple support. Can't figure out how to fix video problem with isight, ichat & skype. the image is broken up into vertical lines like looking through glass. This is a recent problem. However, ichat and skype work fine with a camcorder. How can this be?
Image is perfect on qtpro & Imovie HD as well as Quicktime Broadcaster.
Support wanted me to reinstall 10.3.5 over 10.3.9 and to preserve settings. Recently installed isight update 1.0.3 and a few programs on apple website.

    Hello pickmynose
Whenever a user is having as much difficulty as you are, I suggest you keep your important files backed up regularly. If you have not backed up recently, now would be a good time. Then, on to your issue.
Unable to get help from apple support.
Support wanted me to reinstall 10.3.5 ...
Sounds like they are trying to help. Why have you not tried their suggestion?
... image is broken up into vertical lines like looking through glass ...
... ichat and skype work fine with a camcorder ... How can this be?
... Image is perfect on qtpro & Imovie HD ... Quicktime Broadcaster...
The fact that your iSight "image is broken up into vertical lines like looking through glass" while "ichat and skype work fine with a camcorder" coupled with your assertion that "Image is perfect on qtpro & Imovie HD as well as Quicktime Broadcaster" leads me to think (as apparently do "apple support") that you have a software problem.
If you do not want to try the suggestion offered by "apple support", consider
applying the Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9. Repair permissions immediately before and after updating.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
Although you report that "Image is perfect on qtpro ...", the fact that you are post this problem
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4153016#4153016
about using QT Pro, have added "a few programs on apple website," and list several accessory devices in your system information leads me to wonder if you might have a Possible hardware or software conflict. Unplug, uninstall, and disconnect everything possible while you check for potential conflicts.
I see from another of your posts that you were using FileVault. FileVault Can Affect Performance on any application that writes to disk. Turn off FileVault, at least while you are troubleshooting and until you get things working properly. I only turn FileVault on while my laptop Mac is in transit or not in my possession. I turn FileVault back off while I use it. This takes some time, but saves a lot of trouble.
Seemingly unrelated problems in multiple applications or operations can sometimes be a symptom of a startup disk that needs more free space or some other Mac OS X Maintenance. Perform maintenance now unless you know your maintenance is up to date.
Finally, try any relevant suggestions you have not already tried from Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight kbase article. Sometimes strange problems occur in only one user account. Test to see whether the problem is resolved if you start a new user account.
If you still have the problem, unless you get better suggestions here, I think you should contact your Apple-Authorized Service Provider for professional service.
