IChat vs. Yahoo Messenger

I have been using Yahoo Messenger to Video chat with a friend on a PC. The picture quality is much better than AIM, and I don't care about the lack of audio.
I gave my friend my old Powerbook Ti/1.0 and got a new HD model so we are trying out iChat AV now. I am past all of the router issues, and we are able to use iChat pretty well for audio and video.
My question is that the video in Yahoo is much clearer (when using Yahoo's Super mode), but the frame rate is pretty low (1-2 fps?). iChat has a much better frame rate, but the resolution is WAY lower.
For me, the video quality of Yahoo outweighs the high frame rate of iChat.
Is there any way to trade off some of the high frame rate in iChat for a higher resolution picture? The difference is VERY dramatic...
I really want to use iChat, but I find myself being drawn to Yahoo for the pristine picture...
Everyone else I read about says Yahoo is terrible, and I wonder if they don't have "super mode" working (which take a router config to pass through port 5100/tcp). Maybe they can't get past the lack of audio, but for me, the pictures is more important.
Anyone have comments or suggestions?

Hi Aross99,
The more an application puts into sending a good picure the slower the frame rate will be. A very good picture takes the same amount of data as several lesser quality ones.
Faster frame rates are smoother.
Judgement is personal of speed over quality.
I personally like smoothness of video.
The quality of video will depend on how fast your processor is and what else it is doing.
If you adjust the Yahoo! framerate/quality the picture is probably the same for the same frame rate.

  • One more iChat and Yahoo Messenger question

I have been PC user for years, but I only recently saw the light...
I have a MacBook Pro recently updated with Lion.  I have everything updated.  So, I am trying to communicate with a friend through iChat using Yahoo Messenger.  He has a brand new PC.
I can log into iChat using my Yahoo Messenger account.  He can do the same.  But, even though we can see each other on our Buddy List, and we can text each other, the option "Invite to video chat" is grayed out for me.  If he tries to invite me to video response, but I get no notice.
If I have Yahoo Messenger running at the same time, it takes control, and iChat shows me offline.  If I turn Yahoo Messenger off, I still have no option to video chat.
I have been through the pages here, but I do not have the experience I had with PC.  So, going through and deleting files in a Mac is a little indemidating for me.  Can someone welcome me to the fold and walk me through any tips you can think of that may fix my problem?  Remember, little baby steps...
    If not, thanks for reading,
    Patrick

    Hi,
There is no "FIx" as such.
All the major IM services that do Video somewhere along the line use different protocols in the connection process or in the actually Video Feed.
iChat uses a Process called Session Initiation Protocol. (SIP)
It does not matter if you have an AIM Buddy list ((One with an AIM valid ID as Lgin details) or a Jabber one or a Yahoo one or even if you enable th Bonjour one if you have other Macs on your LAN it will use this Protocol.
This Protocol is compatible with the AIM Application on PCs
There is a thrdr Party App called Trillian which in it's Pro Version can also Video with iChat.
The other side of the coin is that it will only Video to other iChat Users that have Google/Jabber or Yahoo Names.
By the same token Google run a Jabber Server
Jabber servers use a process called Jingle to do Video
Google however have altered their version and it is not that compatible with other Jabber apss that can Video chat
This includes Google's Standalone App called Google Talk (PC Only), the Browser Plug-ins it produces for  Macs (Intels only) and PC and the Chat Option on their Web Pages
Yahoo uses a straight Web Feed for Video and STUN for the Audio chat along side.
STUN is close to SIP but not close enough to allow Audio Connections..
    NOTE
iChat has had the Ability to Text chat to any Jabber Buddy including GoogleTalk ones since iChat 3
iChat 3 was nearly 6 years ago and no Jabber Video ability has bee added to the app in all that time.
Any changes are not going to be "in the next Update"

  • Connecting iChat with Yahoo Messenger

    Hi-
I want to use iChat as my main messenger and most of my friends use Yahoo IM. Wondering if the program has an update or if there is something else i can do?
    Thank you

the easiest way to do it is to install the Openfire jabber server (http://www.igniterealtime.org/projects/openfire/index.jsp) and follow the simple instructions to set it up. Once running, it works in the background and you can add custom gateways for MSN, ICQ, Yahoo and others.
Once you get it installed, you install the IM gateway plugins, set up users (one username for each service you want to access) and point Ichat to <username>@localhost.
the other option is to find a jabber server on the internet that 1. allows new user connections 2. has the IM gateways available.
I did a lot of searching, and the most reliable seemed to have it running on my personal machine. That way its always available and when new versions of the IM gateway are released, I can immediately take advantage of new updates.
Once its installed, I'd suggest picking up "Chax" which will alow you to have 1 unified contact list. the only thing that isnt supported is buddy icons, file transfers or audio/video chat.

  • Does iChat in Lion have video calls with Yahoo messenger??

Does iChat in Lion have video calls with Yahoo messenger?
so far is supports only AIM and Apple ID for video chat but in Lion iChat supports Yahoo messenger, do they have video calling also or only text chat is offered in this version?

    Hi all,
iChat will Video to other iChat users for Jabber (Google, Facebook and others)  and Yahoo Names.
In neither case will it Video to any Web browser access to the service the buddy may be on such as the Google Mail web mail or iGoogle pages access to the chat option.
Nor will it video to any Standalone app (There is one for PC for GoogleTalk) and obviously the Yahoo app on both PCs and Macs.
iChat has not done this since Jabber was added at iChat 3  (OS 10.4/Tiger) some while ago.
The AIM for Mac app has never been able to do Video.
Video chatting to the AIM app for PCs can be fraught but is supposed to work.
It also tends to work to the  Trillian App with the Pro Add-on (which Costs)
The Yahoo for Mac 3 Beta has been in beta for years.  It could be argued that it has never been "Supported"
iChat 6 's behaviour may not be what you want but it is entirely consistent with iChat 3 through 5 with the Jabber options.

  • Prompted to install Yahoo Messenger upon restart even though already installed

I have Yahoo Messenger (3.0.1 beta) installed on my MacBook Air (Lion OS X 10.7.2). It is working fine, however every time I restart my computer and access the Flash Drive (Go - Computer) or the Applications Folder (Go - Applications) I'm prompted to install Yahoo again. I get a Yahoo Messenger installation dialog box asking me to install it. The only way to get rid of this dialog box is to accept the Yahoo agreement and go to the next step for installation - dragging the Yahoo icon into the applications folder. At this stage I can either drag the icon and replace the current one, or just close the drag dialog window. Either way my Yahoo Messenger works fine. If I click the "decline" button the installation dialog box just reappears until I click the "accept" button.
I like to have Yahoo Messenger installed because it allows me to chat with 2 different Yahoo ID's simultaneously - one in iChat and one in Yahoo Messenger.
I contacted Yahoo, but was give this info:
"As of November 15, 2011 Yahoo! Customer Care will no longer provide agent support for Yahoo! Messenger for Mac. If you continue to use this product and have questions or concerns about it, please use the self-service help pages".
This is a brand new computer (and my very first Mac) and Yahoo Messenger was the very first program I installed. Despite the annoyance upon restart I can use both programs (iChat and Yahoo Messenger) together without problems.
I have tried removing all traces of the Yahoo Messenger program using "Appcleaner" and downloaded it again and reinstalled it from scratch, but to no avail.
I would really appreciate some help with this problem.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Ok so the Internal "Drive" on your Mac is a Solid State one ?
You say you put an Shortcut/Alias of it on the Desktop.
Was this by going to the Finder's Own Menu > Preferences > General section and ticking the Box to Show Hard Drives/Disks ?
If I "Open" (double Click) an .dmg to Install something I get an icon on the Desktop that looks like  Drive icon (Similar to the USB stick ones) AND I get the item listed as  a "Device"  (in this case GoogleEarth)
I tend to Drag these to the trash when Finished with them as it "Unmounts"/"ejects" the item.  (I used the quotes to show it is a similar action to removing a USB Drive - obviously a CD or DVD would also pop out of the Optical Drive)
Based on the way you describe using the Finder > Go Menu > Computer It get this view
As I Unmount mine I can't really say what happens if I shut the computer down.
As technically it is a Window (the OS sees icons on the Desktop as windows) then I can imagine Lion is Opening it up again if it was there at Shutdown.  (See Message at Shutdown about restating open Windows on next boot and also the System Preferences > General Section).
I will try shutting down and will post after I have done that

  • ISight works fine in iChat but doesn't show up in Yahoo Messenger nor Skype

Hello, I was given an iSight webcam that works fine in iChat, but doesn't show up in Yahoo Messenger nor Skype, which are the IM programs I use…
I search on the Apple Support site a driver to download, but there is only an updater (iSight Updater 1.0.3) which doesn't run on Tiger... Any help please ?? Thx

You probably don't need it, but the Tiger "iSight Updater" is located in the \System\Library\CoreServices\iSight Updaters\iSight Updater folder.
(You must look manually because SpotLight does not find it.)
Double click the "iSight Updater" there to run the Firmware update manually.

iSight "Product Revision Level" in your Mac's System Profiler shows the installed firmware version for external (Firewire) iSight.
Firmware 1.0.3 Update offers only "Improved audio performance". It does NOT enable audio or any other function, so that is NOT your problem with Skype or YMM. Search or post in their dedicated help/discussions for best and quickest help with those specific, non-Apple apps.
Regardless of whether System Profiler utility shows Firewire iSight's Firmware (Product) level of 1.0.2 or 1.0.3, external iSight ought to work. You can test your external iSight using the suggestions on this linked page:

  • Help! iChat for Mac OS X Lion! Yahoo Messenger!

So today i just got Mac OS X Lion on Mac App Store, I just install it, a FRESH install, and i tried to contact my friend with iChat. I heard that iChat now supported Yahoo Messenger! So i log on my account, work perfect with Text chatting, but when i tried to Video Call chatting, it's said: "Yahoo! is not supported video calls."
    Plz help me!!!

    Hi,
    iChat and Audio.
This has always been set by the System > Preferences > Sound > Input as far as the volumes you Buddies hear you.  (Rather you turning this up has greater effect than them turning up their master volume)
This for a long time presumed there was only the Internal Mic or Line in on most Macs. (And that you weren't using Line-in despite showing both choices in the iChat Mic Drop down in iChat Preferences > Video Section)
Later this became an issue for Headsets particularly Blue Tooth ones.
These require that you set the System Preferences choice and volume first before then choosing them in iChat.
(If already set change both choices to something else.
    Close iChat
Set the System Preferences choice to the Blue Tooth or Headset.
Now open iChat and set the choice there.)
In all cases since iChat 4 it has been possible to set the Volume level for a device (mic) in System Preferences and that it does not change you can use that selection in iChat but change the choice in system Preferences for other input/app combos.  (i.e. once the volume is set for the device iChat uses the choice/headline device in System Preferences can be changedready for other apps)
I have never tested the Yahoo Beta in any build or sub version number for Audio Chats before today.
I tested between my G4/1Ghz Dual Processor running Leopard and my MacBook Pro running Snow Leoaprd.
Yahoo is allowed thogh both Mac Firewalls and the Modem/router combined device is doing UPnP.
Despite checking my Mic Settings in System Preferences on the G4 the Audio level seemed somehow to get turned down.
It stayed in the "right" place after I checked again.
Strangely the G4's older Yahoo Version 3.0.0 can Initiate an Audio Chat but the option is greyed out on the current Yahoo Version 3.0.1 that the MacBook Pro is running.
I will do some more digging.
However it would seem in your case that the Mic choice and Volume level would be the palce to start as it effects both apps.

  • Connecting iChat AV 3.1.4 and Yahoo Messenger

I have a G5 PowerMac running OS X 10.4.6 with iChat AV 3.1.4 and an iSight web cam, and my son has a PC (running some version of Windows) with Yahoo Messenger and a web cam. By using Yahoo Messenger, I can see his web cam at a 1 frame per second frame rate. However, I haven't yet figured out how to get him to be able to see what my iSight sees, and he tells me that because I have a Mac, he can't operate Yahoo Messenger in "Super Web Cam" mode (with a much higher frame rate).
From what I've read on the web, including in this discussion forum, it seems like there are solutions to this problem. I had suggested to my son that we try to connect using Jabber and ICQ, but for some reason that didn't seem to work. I think he said that ICQ made his PC hang. Perhaps there was some detail that we overlooked . . .
Can anyone offer me some wisdom on how to overcoome these problems?
    Thanks!!

    Hi cccmjpd,
Welcome To The Apple Discussion Pages.
If the PC user is using AIM then the video quality cna be reduced and the frame rate will go up.
I am not sure if there is a such a setting in Yahoo!

  • Web Cam does not work for yahoo messenger

    Hi,
I down loaded a s/w MacCleanse, it kinda deleted a lot of files from my mac book air after which the web cam stopped working on yahoo messenger. I checked Ichat the cam works perfectly but does'nt with messenger. Does any one have a clue on how to fix this..

from my experience, attempting to use two programs that allow the use of the camera will render it unusable on the second program attempting to use it. So, if you started iChat first, then forgot to quit the program, and are now trying to use Yahoo Messenger, then you must quit iChat first and it should work.
Not unless your cam is really broken?

My isight had been working fine, even with this beta software. All of a sudden, I can't get isight to work in Yahoo messenger beta 3. I can message, but the minute I attempt turning on my camera, the software goes into "not responding" (just before this I get my image, but no video).
I've tried isight with ichat, photobooth, all works well.

  • ISight - less then 1fps when chatting on Yahoo Messenger

Does anyone know why my frame rate is really bad when I use my built in iSight camera with Yahoo Messenger? No matter what I set the settings to it is a really really slow rate. I have a cheap $30 webcam that has a much better frame rate.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

If you've got FiOS you've got WAY more than enough bandwidth. Do you have a camcorder? If so see if that does any better. How does it work in other chat programs iChat for instance?
I'm not sure why Yahoo would bottleneck it but then again Yahoo has/is notorious for its lack of cutting edge optimization on the Mac side. It may not play nice with Firewire (which I believe even the internal iSights use).
How do you like the FiOS? I'm getting my fiber installed next week.

  • Yahoo Messenger won't sign in Macbook (13" Black) v. 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard)

Been having some really weird issues with Yahoo Messenger on my Macbook (13" Black) O/S Snow Leopard v 10.6.8.  My sign-in/log-in screen has been in this perpetual cycle of saying "signing -in" but nothing happens..  I have no other issues with other messenging apps (e.g iChat, AOL-IM, ICQ, etc) work just fine, but just non stop things with Yahoo.  Don't know if it ever worked on here, but now its becoming an issue because I'm starting an online class now and need to have this for discussion groups.   Any help would be great .. Thanks ! (BTW this screen shot has been goign on for about an hour)

The most random fix just happened for me, something I didn't think of trying.
    At the Log-In Screen:
Click File --> Preferences --> Select the Connection option (I changed the toggle to 'Behind Firewall') .. Although, I'm not behind a fire wall or anything but just played around with the settings and it worked and now I'm able to log in .  strange.. very strange..
