IChat with a camcorder

Is there any way to use a camcorder for your iChat instead of the iSight camera?

Answering Defcom's Question will be easier.
However.
USB Web cameras come in two main sorts.
More recently those that are USB Video Class Compliant that Apple have now got a Standard Driver for in the OS. This then works if you have USB 2.0 and you don't need to get an additional Mac Driver.
The second sort are older cameras mostly USB 1.1 that are Not USB Video Class (UVC) compliant.
These have to have a Mac Driver. This effectively subdivides them again into those that have one and those that don't.
Even then you have to get the iChatUSBCam Utility. A $10.00 add-on for iChat that effectively converts the VGA or other output of the camera into a DV format that iChat uses.
Camcoders fall into a group all of their own.
If they are firewire and have a standard DV output then iChat will be able to use their output.
If the Output is HD DV then iChat can not.
If the signal output is in fact set or only allows NTSC or PAL to connect to a TV or Video recorder then iChat can not see this either.
Obviously not all Cameras have Firewire as an Output.
Converting from USB to Firewire via cables is not really a solution.
Although there are several DV converters out there that have Firewire, S-Video, RCA connections I am not aware of one that does USB as well.
The reason you need a DV converter and possibly a Mini USB to RCA cable is because that replaces the need for a Mac Driver.
I am not aware of any manufacturer that has written a Mac Driver for the USB enabled camcorder.
The main reason for this is that the output is probably NTSC or PAL and iMovie can see that. So you would only heed it for iChat or possibly PhotoBooth
On top of that there are several manufacturers that have their own connection types and in some cases propitiatory DV formats.
As an Example.
I have this camera (Stills)
http://www.kodak.com/global/en/service/products/ekn006609.jhtml
It is no longer supported by Kodak but that is another issue.
It can be seen over USB by iPhoto an other apps that can access Media drives as this reads the memory card.
It can not take Video shots as it is quite old and it was not a feature when I bought it.
However it does have a small 2.5mm jack that plugs into the View Screen output and will show it as either a PAL (Euorpean) or NTSC (North America) TV Signal
The other end of this cable is a RCA connector.
I then connect this to a DV converter.
It has three options in the switch choice.
Analogue to DV Into the Computer
DV from Computer to Analogue on a device (TV, Video recorder, Camcorder)
and "Pass Through"
The signal using Pass through is seen be iMovie
It is only "Seen" by iChat when I use the Analogue to DV setting into the computer.
Summary.
Camcorders do not output signals the same as Web cams that iChatUSBCam could, if there was a Mac Driver, convert for iChat.
Of the choices of output that a camcorder may be able to change between only DV will work for iChat and has to get to the computer over Firewire.
Even if Stills cameras that save various forms of mpeg files or Camcorders that can also output mepg files over USB there are no Drivers for Macs for these.
A USB Web cam either has to be USB 2.0 and UVC compliant to be seen by the Mac OS after 10.4.9 - and the computer has to have USB 2.0 - OR
It has to have a Mac Driver AND the iChatUSBCam Utility.
Defcom is really good at finding out info about cables and output about devices like this situation and is likely to come up with definitive answer if there is a solution out there.

  • Ichat with dv camcorder

I am trying to get ichat AV working with my father. He uses it with my sister so I know things on his end work. I've got a new DV camcorder (Canon ZR600) that I am trying to use. When we first hooked up I actually saw my dad for a few seconds and then it froze up and we got "the communcation error" it sounds like so many people get. I think it's error -8. At that point I realized that my camera was on play(VCR) and not camera. I changed it and then we tried it again later that night and we could get nothing to work (always got the communication error). ichat seems to recognize my camera as I can preview and see myself and it even pulls up ZR600 for the microphone in the preferences. I guess I'm just not sure where to begin. We played a little bit with the bandwidth settings, server setting (as we saw mentioned in another forum), and even the quicktime streaming speed. These did not help but we didn't really have any direction and so my not have doing the right things...Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Can two peeps use iChat with different accounts on the same computer?

What do I do to REMOVE an old AIM account and replace it with a new account in IChat?
Can two peeps use iChat with different accounts in the same computer?
(Actually, two people share a laptop, but one of us cannot use her AIM account cuz mine is in iChat already... And, when traveling, I have the computer - and I would like to use iChat on the computer...)

In iChat 4 you can have more than one AIM Valid name logged in at once.
AIM valid = AIM, @mac.com or a MobileMe name.
What you are then stuck with is that iChat is linked to one Buddy Picture and The one Mac User Account's Address Book which may or may not have Full Names, emails details, or a Nickname in iChat 4 linked to the Screen Names.
Whilst it does let you both log in whilst using one Mac User Account there are drawbacks about who uses the keyboard and reading meesages from the other persons Buddies.

  • Ichat with an Ibook G3 500 mzh...

    Hi everybody,
I'd like to use Ichat with my kids. They have my old Ibook G3 500 mzh with 640 mgs ram on Panther 10.3.9. I have a G4 dbl 450 with 1.25 g ram and the latest version of Tiger and I just got an Isight camera.
Is the Ibook robust enough for the task, should I upgrade it to Tiger, should I use Ichat 2.1 or Ichat AV, should they use the Panasonic DV Webcam they already have or would it be better with an Isight camera?... The Ibook has a firewire connection.
    Sorry about that many questions...
    Thank you

    Hi Jean-Francios,
About the iBook, it is below Spec anyway. (It can be done though) You need iChatUSBCam This allows USB Cams to work on all Macs with iChat (A/V versions) It also allows the use of iSight specifically on Sub G3/600Mhz machines.
If the G4 is on Panther it will have ichat 2 and upgrading to iChat 2.1 should help.

I have problems with my films that become slightly jerky after I have imported
and edited them in iMovie and then burned them onto a DVD using iDVD.
I can see the weak jerkiness when panning in both laterally
    and vertically.
I shoot with a camcorder Canon Vixia HF10. The camera has been set to deliver HD quality (1920x1080). But I have accidentally filmed with a frame rate of 60 (?).
When I import the films in iMovie I have been asked if I want to change to frame rate 30 (instead of 25). I have chosen 30.
Could it be the setting of a frame rate 60 in my camcorder that causes jerkiness when panning or what else?

Try forcing iPhoto to load the Library on the External Hard drive by launching it while holding down the Option key. Choose the Library on the External HD, and quit iPhoto, see if iMovie can see the Library with the iPhoto Videos contained inside.

  • Video ichat with XL1

From everything that I have read, I believe it should be possible to video ichat with my XL1. See old post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=276831&tstart=30.
I am connected via firewire, but under preferences>video, iChat AV 2.1 does not detect a camera attached.
    Any solutions?
    600 MHz PowerPC G3 iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   512 MB RAM, Canon XL1

Ok, so I did more research and found that ichat AV 2.1 requires a G4 or G5 for work with a DV camera. I operate on a G3. This is just another reason for me to buy a new computer.

  • Wanting to buy a mac, what are my choices with firewire camcorder

I have a friend who wants to switch to a mac but I am pretty sure his camcorder has firewire and he wants to make dvds for his family.
What are his choices??? I started reading posts and got confused!
    thanks
    Laura

Get a MacBook White if you want a portable Mac, and not the Aluminum MacBook.
The MacBook Pro will also work with that camcorder, but is almost twice as expensive new. Used and refurbished Macs exist which are cheaper.
Get a Mac Mini if you want the cheapest Mac that fits those requirements.
Make sure the model you have either has a Superdrive by default, or build to order.
An iMac will also fit those requirements if he needs a graphics processor capable of playing high end games.
A Mac Pro is good if he needs to use programs such as Final Cut Pro and Adobe CS4 to their fullest capability, though all these machines when maxed out on RAM should be able to handle basic editing with these programs.
CS3 and earlier versions of Adobe are best run on older used and refurbished G5s.

  • Is it possible to video ichat with windows?

    Hi,
I have a friend using a Windows XP pc and she would like to video conference with my Mac.
Is it possible for me to connect and have a video conference with a Windows XP guest?
    What software (application) is needed?
I am using iChat with my powermacG5, works great when I connect with other Mac.
    Thanks

    Hi
For AIM set-up for PC http://www.mvldesign.com/videoconferencetutorial.html#xp they must be using AIM5.9 and not AIM Triton.
You might have better success using Skype to a PC.

  • How to make an account in iChat with Apple ID but no .mac?

    Hi everyone,
my Apple ID is my email adress but not ending with @mac.com or @me.com. How can I make an account in iChat with my Apple ID without making an extra ID with an @mac.com name?
    Thanks

    Hi,
An Apple ID that you may use for Logging in to Discussions to Post and may also link to your iTunes account and the Apple Store purchases is not the same as an Account/Screen Name for iChat.
@mac.com names were at one time given out when you purchased the .mac service (predecessor to MobileMe).
However trial versions on .mac allowed the name to work in iChat after the trial was up (As well as Lapsed Paid for ones)
The Email services stopped at the end of the trial or if you stopped paying for the service.
However when MobileMe started and replaced .Mac people could elect to keep their @Mac.com names
Therefore @mac.com name may or may not be valid email addresses.
Since then Apple have allowed new @mac.com names to be created to use as free iChat names (not valid Email Addresses)
Apple names ending @mac.com and @Me.com (MobileMe) are valid AIM screen Names in iChat. (Agreement between Apple an AIM)
(MobileMe is free during the trial period but requires Credit Card up front and Active discontinuation before the Trial is up and also does not work after the Trial is cancelled)
You can also Use AIM names Register here
These tend to not have any @something.com suffixes.
You can also use any GoogleMail ID if you enable Talk on your Google account.
Using a third Party Jabber app you can register a Jabber ID (Also looks like a email address) as most Jabber servers doe not have Web Browser accessible registration pages.
    Summary.
An Apple ID created to Login into Discussions is unlikely to be linked to iChat.
(it can be done as you say with @Mac.com or @Me.com names)
An Apple ID can be linked to iTunes and for making On-line Store purchases.
There are options to creating an iChat ID.
AIM would most likely suit you needs of not having an @mac.com or @me.com suffix
Jabber names look like Email Addresses but rarely work as such with the exception of GoogleTlak/GoogleMail IDs
    NOTES:-
A GoogleTalk or Jabber ID can add Jabber or GoogleTalk Buddies but not those that Login to AIM.
A Valid AIM Screen Name can not have Jabber/GoogleTalk Buddies added to it.
An AIM valid Screen name could be from AIM or Apple (@mac.com or @me.com) or from any other ISP AIM has an Agreement with for using their Email Address.
This last part means you may see Buddy's screen Names that have other @ type suffixes
In fact the AIM Registration page allows you to use any Email as the Screen Name (I have seen a Hotmail one used)
This means as both AIM and Jabber use names that end @server(mail or otherwise).com/net/whatever as there can be some confusion when adding Buddies to a Buddy List.
I hope I have been clear enough.

  • IChat with myself?

Hi, this is probably a stupid question. I have a new iMac (at home) and I take my MBP on the road. I am a .Mac subscriber. So I use my .Mac account to iChat frequently. But how do I set it up so I can iChat with my family when I am on the road? Understand my question? I assume the answer has something to do with getting another account. Can I have multiple iChat names with my one .Mac account? Should I get a free AIM account. (I know nothing about how to do this, so any help would be appreciated.)
Thanks... and I always mark helpful/solved when I get helpful answers.

    Hi Pianafiddle,
You need to create a second screen name.
iChat 2.x used to be able to Text chat to the same screen name and log in twice (if you ignored the Text message from AIM about it).
Now although iChat can be set to allow Multiple Logins it has been changed so you can not add your own Screen name to your own Buddy List.
As far as .Mac goes Aliases do not work although a new trial account will still work beyond the sixty days if you don't pay for it making it a free screen name.
AIM and/or .Mac screen names will work.
If you choose .mac make sure the password is not more than 16 characters.
You can create longer ones but the AIM servers do not allow them.

  • Need help with Digital Camcorder compatibility!

I am looking to buy a digital video camera but I am not sure if they are "compatible" with my iMac. My friend just bought the JVC - Everio Digital Camcorder - Model: GZMG330HUS. It comes with Windows software and the manual has a brief mention of how to Backup-Up the video files onto the Mac but no mention of the video format being compatible with Mac. Anyway we tried plugging it into the Mac to see how it responded, and it did not, except that it saw it as a device that we could access the video files to copy then to the Mac hard drive. The Video files have an extendion .MOD and .MOI. Tried double clicking on the MOD (the video itself) and the Mac gave the message that no application exists to run it.
I really want iMovie to recognize it so I can edit the video and make movies to sent to family.
So, my question is whether any of you have tried this? Is there a solution to get this type of camera to be recognized by iMac? Are there other suggestions for compatible cameras in the $400 range (like this JVC is)?
    Thanks in advance.

I had an issue with a JVC customer service rep that caused me to return a JVC camcorder that would not work with my iMac. I have since purchased the Panasonic PV-GS320 mini/dv camcorder.
Fantastic video and absolutely no problems. Recognized through iMovie, iDVD and FCE HD 3.5 via firewire. How-ever, you will have to purchase a firewire cable as it is not supplied with the camcorder.
Also in your price range, around $350.00.
    Hope this helps.
