IChat with PC Users

I'm the only one with a Mac - all relatives have PCs and I can't get IChat to view anyone using either MSN Messanger or AIM - anyone have any solutions? I can do messaging but I can't see video.

The only way on MSN is.

  • No Audio when iChating With PC User

I've looked on the forum, but can't seem to find this particular issue. I'm using ichat 3 with OS 10.4.2 and the person I'm trying to video conference with has a PC with Windows XP and a logictech camera. We both have the latest versions of the AIM software for our respective operating systems. Also, I'm using DSL while he's on a cable connection.
We can successfully open and sustain a video chat, but I can't hear him and only for about the first minute of the connection can he hear me before the audio cuts out. Neither one of us can figure what the problem is. I've contacted another Mac user I know with the same camera and software as myself to test my own camera and both the audio and video work fine when conferencing with him.
My only conclusion is that it's an issue from the PC side that he has to configure although I'm not sure what to tell him to adjust, or it's an issue with the AIM client that were using and for some reason the audio support just isn't there for the software. Anybody have anything that will make this work, or can at least explain what's going on??
    Thanks in advance!

    Ralph,
That could be adding to the problem. According to the link you sent me my up and down streams are 300 and above. My friend however is usually much lower, below 100 during video conferences. I thought that might be an issue, but in the past we've been able to get picture pretty easily and so I overlooked it. However, we went ahead and downloaded the "here" link you suggested to his PC and now the audio is very stable, but we have absolutely no video.
Considering he has a cable connection I'm surprised his bit rate is so slow, but I'm also aware that it's a community connection and that you're only as fast as the amount of traffic you're sharing it with. Also, I've been able to carry steady vc's with other Mac users even when my bit rate is in the low 100s and thier's is mid 100–200s, so I thought I was getting by okay.
In any case, outside of the bit rate issue, is there any other way to get this thing to work already?! I'm tired, hungry and my food is running out.

  • Using iChat with PC users

    Hi.
I'm very new to this game, love the iChat AV but have only been able to chat with one other Mac user. Other family members use PCs and I'd love to connect with them too but don't know how to go about it.
What's need for compatibility? And what's an AIM account?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Check this out as well. It is Universal Binary for the new Intel Mac's, and also available for PC. I use it to chat with PC friends all the time. The free account allows 1-on-1 video conversation.

  • IChat with WINDOWS users

Unfortunately, I still have some friends who have Windows machines. I've chatted with some non-Mac users, but don't know how they're doing it.
Can a Windows user use an iSight?
What software do they need to connect the way we would connect with the buddy list on iChat?
I know they don't need a .mac account and can use AIM, but I don't know what to tell them to do about the camera and chat software. ???
    Thanks.

  • IChat not working with Tiger user

I recently received a new Macbook with Leopard already installed on it. I have 2 friends who also own Macbooks, who I iChat with.
One of my friends received her Macbook when Leopard just came out, so she had Tiger on it previously . The other friend has had her Macbook longer, and does not have Leopard, just Tiger.
When attempting to start an iChat with the friend with Tiger, it would not work. The weird thing about it though is that it has worked a few times before, if we kept trying and I found if I restarted my computer.
However, now the friend that previously had Tiger had problems with her Macbook and received a brand new one with Leopard already on it. Now it does not work for her to start an iChat with the Tiger user, although she had no problems with her old computer.
    Sorry it's confusing!
But in conclusion, it seems that iChat is not working between a Leopard and Tiger user. The confusing part is that we have gotten it to work before...so I'm really not sure what the problem is.
What can we try to get this to work all the time, without her having to upgrade to Leopard?
I usually get an error response saying there was no data received for the last 10 seconds, and she gets different things about Bandwidth, and saying she cancelled the invitation when she didn't.
    Thanks

Personally, I think it's Leopard that is at fault here. I had Tiger and my family and I would video iChat all the time. But then we downloaded Leopard. We discovered we could no longer video iChat.
My son used 4 different computers (all Macs of course), trying same network and different networks. What he discovered is that the ONLY way video iChat now works is if computers are on the same network. Well, how absurd, because the idea is to be able to video iChat with anyone, not just family members in the same household on the same network.
Apparently, somewhere, Apple (Leopard) bragged about their new improved iChat video on a network. Well, I think they forgot that not all of us are sitting in an office wanting to spend the time to iChat video with co-workers, but have friends and family in other areas we'd like to video iChat with.
So through a process of elimination, it all led back to Leopard as being the culprit, because Tiger to Tiger worked perfectly, and even Leopard to Tiger works IF you are on the same network.
I really do hope Apple supplies a FIX for this problem. I, for one, am VERY disappointed in the fact that I now have Leopard and can no longer video iChat with friends across the country.

  • I want to use iChat video and file sharing with Windows users

Nowadays, iChat is compatible with AOL/AIM, Google Talk, Jabber, Mac.com and MobileMe instant messaging services. I know that Yahoo Messenger support will be available soon in Mac OS X Lion.
I tried using AOL/AIM and Google Talk natively in iChat in order to talk with Windows users which were using Google Talk application or web chatting (Me from: Google Talk - My friends from:  Google Talk, and Me from: AOL/AIM - My friends from:  Google Talk), but videoconference and file sharing were not available.
I also tried Windows Live Messenger in iChat via Jabber intermediate, but it is not efficient and doesn't work for videoconference and file sharing.
So, which IM service combination I should use to chat with Windows users in order to be able to use videoconference and file sharing using such a great app like iChat?
    Thanks you.

    Hi,
A lapsed Trial or lapsed Paid for MobileMe account will not work in any fashion, as a Screen Name in iChat/AIM apps or as a Email.  (Of course it is no longer an Valid Apple ID either).
Given that Google is a Jabber server iChat will Video (or Audio Only) Chat Jabber to Jabber.
With a Valid AIM name (AIM, MobileMe or @mac.com) then it is supposed to work to AIM on a PC
This tends to vary from person to person as to success.
From AIM version 6.5 AIM introduced a Send as Typing feature called "Real Time"
It does not work to iChat and in fact also has to be turned Off in the Buddy List at the AIM end for Video or Audio chats to work.
The AIM app also has to be allowed through the Windows Firewall as an Exception, preferably with UPnP enabled as well and UPnP enabled in their Router.
Trillian is a paid for App for PCs that provide an alternative.
Recently theri site offered 3 windows versions
The Pro version of verion 3.2 (known to work), a version 4 and a version 5 in beta.  The version 3.2 used to have a free Text chat version and only the Pro version was needed to Video.
Until the site was reorganised the 3.2 version was "On Sale" at a reduced price.
It seems version 5 is now out of beta
They are still separating out a Pro version.
    It is a multi-service client
There is also a Mac version although I have not tried it.
I am not sure what you mean by "Manage" your MSN Contacts.
How about using a MobileMe expired account screen name for using iChat with Windows-Google Talk users? Should I expect the same incompatibilities?
I have already addressed part of this. The fact the name will not work full stop.
However one way of reading this is that you are thing of linking AIM and Jabber (Google) Buddies in one Buddy List
Directly in iChat this cannot be done - unless you are the one with the Jabber Account and an AIM Transport set up.
You would be subject to the same Text Chat only restrictions.
It is a bit like the fact your phone line can be used for Fax, Telephone and DSL broadband. (in fact mine does TV as well)
You granny would not be able to talk to your Fax machine if that happened to answer the call.
Her Fax machine might be able to communicate with your computer if you had an active Fax app on there, and a dail-up modem active to answer.

  • IChat not connecting with most users

Hi, I'm running Tiger and having trouble connecting to anyone but other Tiger users. I can't connect to PC users and I can also not connect, most importantly, with my dad who uses Panther.
As an error, it says at my end that the other computer is unavailable or unreachable something like that and then at their end it says that I canceled my request. Strange, no doubt.
I changed the Quicktime settings and did everything else in accordance with this thread, including opening the proper firewall ports (i have also tried with firewall off), I have no iChat add-ins and I connect to the internet directly to my cable modem. I had no problems under Panther.
I have an up/down speed of 187Kbps/339Kbps, according to a test I just ran. Also, my dad, the one I really want to talk to, connects with a modem, so i thought maybe his connection was just too pokey to handle it (even though it used to work fine for us), but I have the same problem with broadband users.
I have had this problem with every incarnation of 10.4.x

My dad was online tonight so I had a chance to test it out...
    just says
"there was a communication error during your chat"
somewhere down in the report it says it ended with error -8

  • HT2515 Does iChat work with other users that are on other types of smartphones?  or only Mac phones and Mac mail, contacts, etc?

Does iChat work with other users that are on other types of smartphones?  or only Mac iPhones and iMac Mail, Contacts, etc?

    Hi,
The Messages Beta will Send iMessage to iPhones (Messages replaces iChat)
    iChat can SMS to phones
It needs the computer to be listed as if it in the United States and contacting a Phone that is on a Carrier in the United States that is accepting SMS forwarding from AIM
You list the Buddy as AIM and then +plus their number as in +123456789
The computer can be made to "think" it is in the United States in System Preferences > International (or Text a Language in Lion) then Formats tab.
The Phone has to be a US phone with all the trimmings about AIM's SMS forwarding.

  • Can video chat with Aim users on a PC but not with Ichat users on Mac!

    Hello
I am having the odd problem of being able to video chat with someone when they are using their pc running aim, but I cant chat with the same person when he on his Mac!
I am running as DMZ behind a Linksys WRT54G wireless router.
The problem is on my side because I cant chat with the test accounts either.
I tried this after bothe forwarding and triggering all the ports that were suggested.
    I am stumped!

    Hi Lullah,
This is going to be down to the Staelite connection.
It has what is called latency.
This adds an unexceptable delay in the passing of data at the start of the connection.
Very few people have reported success.
The things you can try are to fool the link into passing more intense data prior to starting a chat.
If you have web pages try uploading a Pic of larger file to the site.
Just as this finishes start up iChat
You should also check that System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab has the speed to match you download set.
Hopefully (But no reported success) you may get iChat to see more bandwidth as you have just had the modem busy.
Following the launch of iChat with a video chat request may be able to get that bandwidth.
Realistically the 128 k upload even if you were getting close to it is very tight to the lowest point Apple say will work.
Speed testing a 128 k service i likely to get a result of about 80% of the figure (102k) iChat will use about 80 % of what is left (you are down to about 83K). You are now below the 100k min.
With regards to your LAN there are several things that may help if not set up already.
Only have one device doing DHCP. The way routers work as compared to modems is that they pass all routing data though to the computers.
This means the computers can be sitting in two subnets (1) from Modem to computer via router and (2) from Router. The computer can only display one of these IP addresses but can get confuse info regarding iChat.
Do not use Port Forwarding or Port triggering, twice or together on the LAN. iCHAT does not like two lots of NAT (bath are forms of Network Address Translation [NAT]).
    Use UPnP where you can.
IF you are trying to test this yur Mac to your PC you ahve to allow for the fact that the modem is handling two Video chats in effect. This means you need twice the minimum bandwidth (let alone the fact that ichat to AIM semms to like 50% more than Mac to Mac contacts.
Sorry to be the bearer of so much doom and gloom.

  • Can two peeps use iChat with different accounts on the same computer?

What do I do to REMOVE an old AIM account and replace it with a new account in IChat?
Can two peeps use iChat with different accounts in the same computer?
(Actually, two people share a laptop, but one of us cannot use her AIM account cuz mine is in iChat already... And, when traveling, I have the computer - and I would like to use iChat on the computer...)

In iChat 4 you can have more than one AIM Valid name logged in at once.
AIM valid = AIM, @mac.com or a MobileMe name.
What you are then stuck with is that iChat is linked to one Buddy Picture and The one Mac User Account's Address Book which may or may not have Full Names, emails details, or a Nickname in iChat 4 linked to the Screen Names.
Whilst it does let you both log in whilst using one Mac User Account there are drawbacks about who uses the keyboard and reading meesages from the other persons Buddies.

  • Is Screen Sharing with multiple users possible?

I am trying to discuss some documents with multiple users. It works very well with just two users sharing the screen of one of them, so I was wondering if there was a way to have a third user participating. If iChat does not allow this, does anyone know a different software solution?
    Thanks
    Christian

    Hi,
    No. (Not in iChat)

  • ISight - connects with windows users no problem?

I'd like to buy this webcam, but I heard it has problems connecting with windows users. Will I be able to talk to people on it through AIM? Thats what I'd like, if not, I probably wont get it. Anyone have any personal experience or have any answers or helpful tips - I'd appreciate anything - thanks.

It is not the iSight itself that gives you the impression that connecting with Micros~1 Windows users causes problems ... it is the availability of (cross platform) applications that makes connecting a bit more cumbersome.
I have PowerMac G5 with iSight and I connect with my Micros~1 Windows platform family equiped with and without USB webcam.
The challenge will be to find messaging / VoiP applications with bearable audio quality and reasonable video performance.
I started with Skype for Voice and Yahoo! messenger for bad video ( 1-2 fps and video size 320 x 240).
Skype has a video plugin (only for Windows)
Yahoo! Messenger does not have voice yet (2.5.3)
MSN is badmouthing because of the "M"
I have used iChat with another Apple believer ... and the quality of Voice and Video is unparralled.
The best two alternatives I found are:
    a) AIM 5.9
    b) Trillian (www.trillian.cc)
Both use a free AIM screen name.
AIM works fine, see also EZJim pages.
TrillianPro 3.1 reuses AIM screen names ... and ... it has both good audio and zoom-to-full-screen-video size with fps rates filling your bandwidth.
The only negative on Trillian so far, the "handshake" for connecting two people takes some time.
TrillianBase is free but has no Video capabilities. The Pro version is 25$.
    Regards Coen
ps. if you want to test your setup use my AIM screenname: coenjeukens

  • IChat with D-Link 1000 or Netmeeting?

Howdy! I have recently purchased a brand new MacBook Pro with 2 GB RAM and 120 GB HD. One of the main reasons why I purchase this laptop was its ability to do video conferencing. Since I am deaf, I communicate with other users via video conferencing.
Now my question is this... how do I use iChat to connect with D-Link 1000 (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=8) or Microsoft Netmeeting? In order to do that, you will need to "dial" the user's IP address to establish video conferencing. I can't seem to find a way to make that happen.
If this is not possible, are there any software out there that will allow me to "dial" an IP address?
    --DeafMan
    MacBook Pro 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Howdy, again!
I found the software that will allow me to dial IP address to connect with Netmeeting, D-Link 1000, VP-100, and the like. The software is called "xMeeting" by sourceForge.net (http://sourceforge.net/projects/xmeeting). I have used this program a few times so far, and it function pretty much like iChat.
So, for all Deaf Mac users, try this out!

  • Videoconference with pc-user

    Hi everyone,
I wanted to start a videoconference in iChat with my AIM account. One of my friends is a pc-user and the video appearing next to his account indicated that he can't videoconference.
Does anyone know how that might come? He's using the AIM 7.0 for Windows!
    Thanks!

    Hi,
At the top of this Forum is a section on the Recent Users Tips for iChat
(Other forums list their most Recent tips)
The Second one in this forum is this http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1968438
    I would start with that.
It is mostly written for AIM 6.5 and 6.8 with reference to AIM versions earlier than that.
Both of you should add the names in Table 1 (link Below) and see if you can Video to them.

  • Text chat with Trillian users = DSL crash every time

    Hello all,
I'm running iChat 3.1.8 (v445) on an iBook G4 running OS 10.4.9, with a Zyxel Prestige 600 series modem.
iChat works fine for me...until i begin text chatting with Trillian users. The result is always the same: The first time they chat with me, whether they initiate the chat or respond to my initiation, my DSL crashes. Once I wait for my DSL to cycle or switch to stealing my neighbors' wireless, it works fine for the most part, though I do experience periodic DSL crashes after the first crash.
Every single time. I've tested this with various friends, and it is only happening with Trillian users.
I've got my built-in firewall on, with ports 5060, 5190, 5297, 5298, 5678, and 16384-16403 open for both TCP and UDP.
I'm logging onto an AIM account on login.oscar.aol.com on port 5190.
    TIA for any help offered.

    Hi sbcreducer,
At one time it was possible to bring down a web server by many people getting organised and all trying to get the same page at the same time. This was called a Denial of Service attack (DoS)
Nowadays many modems and routers have protection against this even though you may not even be allowed by your ISP to run a web server from your end. (Your own web pages for instance)
This protection comes in about three main ways but essentially they monitor the amount of data coming to the modem or router (and request for a web page still means data in coming to make that request) and then cut the flow of data to stop you losing the internet connection.
One method is called Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI)
Another is Quality of Service (QoS) and lastly
    Denial Of Service (DoS).
Now as to where this seting is on each manufacturers device is a bit of a guess.
In these pics at Port Forwarding.com of a Linksys, in the third pic of the Linksys you can see it in Gaming and Applications as a sub tab (near Port Forwarding but to the right)
On my Netgear it is on the WAN page and Called DOS.
On some Netgears it is on the same page of the Setup pages but called SPI
USing this site http://portforward.com/routers.htm you can look up your device.
    Click on it.
At the next page select iChat from the list.
AT the next page it will tell you the default IP address the device is likely to use and the Default USer ID and Password so you can gain access to the set up pages via a web browser.
After that it a question of checking all the menu items to see if you have it.
Check anything that says Filters, and Firewalls as it can be regarded as a second level firewall, as well as the places I suggested above.
Not all device have this of course.
