IChat won't connect and Software Update will not run.

Hi, all,
Sorry if something like this has already come up, and I apologise if this is the incorrect forum to post this in. I searched and didn't see anything identical to my issue (I didn't search very hard, but I did search), so I figured posting a topic might be the best way to go. I know this is two problems, but I decided to post it in the iChat forum in case the two were related.
I bought this computer and received it yesterday. It's a 15 inch MacBook Pro, i5, 10.6.4. It worked fine this morning, software update ran, ichat worked fine.
Now, when I try to connect to iChat, it takes a good ten minutes to try to connect, and then it sends me an error that says "You have been disconnected from iChat services. An internal error occurred that disconnected you from all iChat services. To resume using iChat, log in again to your instant messaging account." So, I quit iChat, and restarted it, but now it won't even show me my buddy list saying "connecting....". It just starts and sits there, and all the options are greyed out. I tried going into the security settings and changing the port to 443, but that's greyed out, too.
So I thought I would try to run software update, and software update opens, but it doesn't ... go. It shows the little blue bar, and it's not frozen, but it doesn't advance at all, and it never gives me the option to go to the "install updates" screen because it doesn't check. I went into my network settings to check my connection, and I'm definitely connected to the internet (I mean, I'm typing this ON the MacBook Pro right now), but the panel says I'm not. I can hit "cancel" and quit software update.
I already reinstalled the OS and the update to 10.6.4, and it's still the same issue.
Help, anyone? This computer is brand new and I really don't want to have to erase and reinstall.
Thanks

Hi,
Welcome to the    Discussions
On the changing the port front stop off on the Account Info tab on the way a deselect "Use this Account" to take it Off Line. (you can get half way states)
You should then find the port 5190 is dark text so it can be edited.
You should press the Enter key to "Set" the port change (this is different to earlier versions of iChat)
Also try it with the SSL option disabled.
If this is an AIM Login (AIM or Apple Name) their SSL server is more prone to "Falling over". iChat should default to using an Non SSL Login on a reconnection front it can be subject to a time frame issue.
Next check the Mac Firewall (System Preferences > Security > Firewall tab)
If this is On in Snow Leopard you have to go to the Advanced Button and Allow Signed Apps and Add iChat to the list.
I favour the last suggestion as this may also block Software Update (Although I nm not sure how you got to 10.6.4 although it is a separate Download you can get).
I would also check you have DNS servers listed in System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button > DNS tab

Please, if posting Logs, do not post any Log info after the line "Binary Images for iChat"

There is a tech note on what to do when an install or update fails.
Often due to prior copies and cache of those on your system.
Some you have to uninstall but it will leave behind files and folders that then have to be manually removed.
    Clone Windows just in case.
    Run chkdsk
    Cleanup
Use CCleaner or similar and repair the Registry might help too.

Thanks.  I have followed all the instructions as recommended and nothing has worked so it looks like the restore/update may have been interrupted - would loss of internet connection do this?
Yes it would, possibly even brick it.
Have successfully connected my ipod nano with iTunes so looks like the device driver is working.
Can I use my ipod nano USB connector to check?
It is not much help to you, since the device that you need still not recognized.
Anyway looks like I may have to swallow the loss of data.  Have set-up a call for tomorrow with Apple support so will wait until after this before doing the factory restore!
Good luck, but if you expect miracle from that call good luck again.

I just finished installing 11.3 and now iTunes will not run. I have uninstalled itunes and resinstalled several times. Now when I attempt to start iTunes i get the following two error dialogues:“The procedure entry point ADiAdID_AcquireMatchSlotIfNecessary could not be located in the dynamic link library iAdCore.dll. and was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows error 127)

    Hi Greybeard1955,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I understand that iTunes is not opening after uninstalling and re-installing it. When iTunes is uninstalled on a Windows computer, all of its components must be removed as well and they must be removed in a specific order. Below is the article for uninstalling on Windows 7. I recommend uninstalling iTunes and all components in order and reinstalling fresh.
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923
    1. Remove iTunes and related components from the Control Panel
Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
    I hope this helps,

  • Safari, iTunes, Software Update will not connect...

I'm piggy-backing on an issue that Parajanov posted at 7:10AM today: I'm having almost the exact same issues, but I've tried everything noted in that post and have not been able to connect with either Safari v2.0, iTunes v7.0, or Software Update.
When I open Safari I get: Safari can't connect to the server. Safari can't open the page "http://www.website.com/" because it could not connect to the server "www.website.com". That same message holds true for every website I attempt but one: my bank. My bank's 24-hour online service is the only thing I can access on Safari.
A little background: This started last week when I was browsing and in the middle of my session, quite possibly to my online bank, when I tried to go back home I got the first message. Sadly, I didn't document the problem as it happened because I thought it was a simple problem. I quit Safari, restarted my computer, and still nothing. Then when I tried to view my history, I saw that all of my previously visited site entries had been replaced with something like "dot607," like a total of 50 entries all the same. Like I said, I didn't document the problem when it happened, so don't take my "dot607" verbatim, but it was something like that. Totally puzzling.
Next, I opened iTunes and Software Update and they both dialog box me and said that it's a network problem. I'm defintely connected because I've been using Firefox for the past few days with no issues whatsoever.
I've attempted to trash com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences. plist, as suggested by Mactechguy, no luck. I've attempted to trash com.apple.safari.preferences.plist, no luck. I've attempted to use Disk Utility and restart, no luck.
This is the first time I've ever had anything like this happen and it's really aggarvating. Help me out Mac Tech community, please!

Sorry, Eme. That too, did not work. Anyone else have any insights or suggestions?
Np; ), I am sorry for this predicament you are in, & nothing is helping,
do search in the Safari forum for redirects, there is a situation going on with this.
I think there is one right on the first page here.
I however, have found the DNS #s are needed in the TCP/IP tab.
I could only browse to earthlink without them however that was last year I have used them since, they were not volunteered.
Did you do a restart, of your mac?
Have you tried a test account to see if Safari works there
System pref.-> Accounts-> Login Options use the + to add one. Log out of your username account & into the test account.
    Worth a shot, imo.
I will look for the other topics on this similar issue.

The issue may be different for you, this is what Daver said he did but there is no articulation on what exactly

Info on your router, connection method etc, could help. Also if the test account works & if you have ichat set up does that work ?

  • 10.7.3 update will not run. I've downloaded it's 2 Gb twice now (half my monthly internet) and the dialog box says "download could not be saved". Without this update I cannot update Java and therefore cannot use my nebank. Ideas?

Where can I report this to Apple, I've just spent 20 minutes trying to find some way to contact them.

Sorry Gimp, but in fairness you didn't solve my problem, you got the points though (accidentally).
It may well have worked, but just downloading the Combo update directly from Apple did the trick. This answer from Scott Newman put me onto it.
However, in this case, there is very clearly an issue that is correlated to two things:  1) Using the automated "Software Update" as compared to downloading and using the separate Mac OS X 10.7.3 Combo Updater; and 2) Certain Mac notebook computers.  In most cases, but not all, running the Combo Updater over a failed 10.7.3 update using Software Updater will fix the problems.  If a user can't get to the desktop or can't download the updater because of the previous failed update, there is information (albit geeky) in the previously noted thread to deal with this.
Most older, experienced Mac users never trust the automated Software Update process for system updates and always download and use the related "Combo" updater.  Unfortunately, many newer Mac users know nothing about this.  Apple's revenues and profit growth have come at the expense of having an exponentiall increase in the number of non-Geek users who just want their Mac to work like their toaster.
Thanks very much for your replies though

  • Itunes won't install-"Apple Software Updates Can Not Be Removed"

Cutting right to the problem. I currently have quicktine 6.5 installed and working. iTunes was completely removed. When doing search, nothing shows up. In Add & Remove Programs, however, iTunes is still listed (37 megs). How do I get rid of it so I can re-install. When I try to install, I get message "Apple Software Updates Can Not Be Removed, Contact Administrator". When I try to upgrade Quicktime to 7.1, I get "An Older Version Of Quicktime Can Not Be Removed". I would like to completely remove all traces of itunes and then try to reinstall.

  • Restored iPod Touch Software Update will not appear

Hello Today I restored my iPod Touch as it was acting strangely, mail app freezes etc. After I restored in Synced with my computer but the January Software update would not install. I hope this restore did con me out of 20 dollars and I am hoping someone can assist me.

Did you restore the iPod on the same machine that you bought the software upgrade?
If not then you need to restore it on the machine where the upgrade was purchased or copy the upgrade file to the new computer. You need to do a search in these forums to find the details of the file you need.

  • Safari won't work and Software Update doesn't recognise internet connection

I'm using Safari Version 4.0.3 (4531.9) and it won't browse to any website. I initially thought it was a problem with Airport so I unplugged and restarted my Airport device but Safari still wouldn't work. Then I noticed that I was still getting email and when I tried Firefox it worked fine. So I thought perhaps I needed a software update for Safari but when I tried to run Software Update it said it couldn't connect to the server and to check my internet connection. I clicked on the Network Diagnostics link which came back saying that my internet connection was fine. I then Googled a bit using Firefox and saw some posts which suggested move the .plist files out of the Library/Preferences folder. I've moved the com.apple.Safari.plist and com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist for all users. But it still hasn't helped. What should I try now?

Hello Michael, and a warm welcome to the forums!

Great clue FF uses different DNS & Proxies than Safari that uses Sys Prefs...
Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers for the Interface you're using...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
Then Apply. These are safer/faster than most ISP's DNS numbers, and have been patched against DNS poisoning.

Open System Preferences>Network>Configure>Proxies Tab, make sure none are set, like for HTTP & HTTPS.

  • Ipod mini won't connect after software update

I was using my ipod mini without problems on my mac powerboook until I downloaded and installed the latest ipod software updater yesterday. Since installing the application and clicking update in the software I can't get my computer to recognise the mini at all no matter what I do. Neither Itunes or the software updater sees my ipod and the ipod itself either says do not disconnect or shows a folder icon with an exclamation mark. Anybody know how to get out of this limbo state it seems to be in?

One thing you can try (AT YOUR OWN RISK - though I have done this on my own iPod mini using my PB and it has fixed issues similar to those that you are reporting), connect the iPod to your mac and then launch the disk utility app. If you're on a windows machine, this obviously won't help you although there may be a similar procedure. When the disk utility app comes up, if your iPod shows up in the left panel after a moment, highlight it by clicking on the name. If you try to verify it, you'll probably get a report of errors - don't panic - go to the erase pane and erase the drive (I think you can select either format with journaled or unjournaled - they both seem to work for me). MAKE SURE YOU"VE SELECTED THE iPOD DISK BEFORE YOU ERASE THE DRIVE!!!
After you erase the drive, you'll need to reapply the latest iPod update to restore the iPod OS (if you don't do this you may still be able to load music but it won't play and you'll still see the exclamation point display). After you reapply the update, you will hopefully back to normal. Re load your tunes and enjoy your iPod again!
    Hope this helps.
