Hi Brian,
Welcome To The Apple Discussion Pages.
The Ports are 5060, 5190, 5678, 16384-16403 for iChat on the AIM side.
These are all UDP if they need Protocols as well with port 5190 needing TCP as well.
The ports 5297, 5298 (and 5353) are the Bonjour ports for using the Bonjour Buddy list when you are on a network (LAN) with other Macs.
If you want to use Jabber then the ports 5220, 5222 and 5223 if using GoogleTalk are needed (on TCP)
IPNetMonitorX is a Utility that comes as a trial that can scan UDP ports.
You need to test it against a known IP address (your Buddy).
This site will tell them what it is http://www.myip.dk/
Run the scan as single ports for the first 3 ports and as a group for the last 20.
The most likely block is to port 5060 if the ISP offers or in this case the hotel is using VoIP (Voice over Internet) as well.
Some hotels will offer a public wirelss service in their foyer and possibly an more Private service over ethernet in their rooms. This "Private" service may be a separate External IP address.

  • Internet connection away from home

how do I connect wirelessly when away from home? I see people at airports sing the net, also at starbucks etc. but I can not get a signal. I am using 2 wire wireless to connect at home with no problems. Any help appreciated.
    Mike

All you really need to do is have the Airport displayed on your menu bar, and when there is signal you will see the bars as being black rather than grey. You can click on the icon to list networks to attempt to connect to - if they're open you'll have no problems.

  • Connecting away from home

Does anybody know how I can access files on my home computer away from home.
I have a small server connected to my hub and I would like to access it from the internet.

I agree with what sig said. I plan my vacations around internet connection. Most places do have it, but you usually need to pay for it which is fine with me.
My friend has verizon wireless and bought a usb modem and pays for a internet plan. It works great for her as she needs to access email from clients on the road.

  • IPod Touch will not connect to wi-fi away from home

I realise this may not be a fresh topic but I've searched and cannot find an answer.
My Touch - more or less brand new - connects to my home wi-fi with no hassle. Syncs, the whole bit. Lovely.
But it won't work away from my home. It recognises wi-fi networks, let's me connect to them but won't actually let me access webpages or update my mail. The mail aspect is the biggest problem as I'm away from it most of the day and bought the Touch to solve the problem. It says it's updating but nothing is downloaded.
Accessing the internet, even with wi-fi apparently switched on, doesn't work either. I've even tried renewing leases on wi-fi networks but it still won't work. Please help.

    Hello
Couple reasons for why iPod Touch will not connect to WiFi Networks outside the house
    1. They are using Mac Address Filtering. Which require the WiFi address in your iPod Touch to be programmed into their WiFi Router. Not much you can do to fix that unless you know who owns the network and they are willing to add you
    2. The networks are running in 802.11 n Speed only mode. Thus iPod Touch will not connect as the touch only supports 802.11 B/G connections. They could also be using the old 802.11 (A) connection on the network as well
    3. As stated earlier they could have outdated Firmware/Software on the router. Thus making the router out of date and not able to connect modern day devices. So if you know the owner it may be advised they contact router manufacture or their tech to update the firmware/software and see if touch connects after
    4. Outdated Touch Software. Ensure you have the latest free version of the iPod Touch Software. If you have yet to get one of the paid versions you may wish to research and or see if a friend has a newer software on their touch and is able to connect to the networks you can not.
    5. WiFi Network security the hot spot is using. Sometimes old standard WEP security can prevent Touch from properly connecting and getting on the network. It is recommended if you know the owner or tech that runs it to try and use WEP 128 bit 13 character password or stronger more modern day wifi security.
If they are using 40/64 bit WEP. Try adding a $ and then the password that they provide you and see if you can connect.
If you get the time please visit your local Apple retail store so they can further look into the touch and test it on the store wifi network. If for some reason it does not work there and they determine possible HW service is needed they will speak about your in warranty options.

  • TS1398 How do I connect to the internet with my iphone when away from home

I have an iphone 3GS which was fine , was able to connect to the internet away from home when at uni, at appointments. Since software update to IOS 6.0, can now only connect to internet wirelessly when at home-as soon as leave the house it disconnects. Is this just because of the software update? Have tried adjusting settings but got nowhere. Thank you

When your wifi is off.  Do you see your carrier name at the top left with either 3G/4G.  If not you can try a reset, hold down the home/power button until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.
or settings - cellular - cellular data - ON
if those two suggestion doesn't help then you will need to contact your phone carrier to resolve the issue.

  • Want to have My iPod Touch to be connected to a WiFi while away From Home

While at Home I am connected to my WiFi through my computer system but when I am away from home there isn't very much WiFi Hot spots in my area except when I am in a Star bucks or in a business that says that they have "Free" WiFi. I have a few WiFi iPod Touch Apps that are able to locate Free WiFi Hot Spots but when I go and try to use them when I am away from home I am not able to use it at all.
Is there a way that I can have my iPod Touch to be set up where I can be connect to any WiFis when I am away from Home? or have my iPod Touch to be able to search for any WiFis in my area?
Note: I have a MobileMe Account and I have a email account with my local Isp which is a Pop account.

I'll add another positive review about the MiFi device and its use with a Touch. I've had this for about 2 months, and it works very well. And I'll disagree with the poster who said "get an iPhone".
The MiFi has several advantages over the iPhone -- First, it's a mobile hotspot that can provide WiFi for up to 5 devices simultaneously (the iPhone can't do that, even once AT&T enables tethering); Second, the MiFi allows use of a network other than AT&T (which many users may appreciate)...aside from Verizon, Sprint sells a version that works on its network; Finally, the price of the MiFi and its usage plan may well end up being less expensive than an iPhone.
It's not cheap, but then again, neither is an iPhone and its usage plan. I spend nearly $60/month on the expensive MiFi plan, but can switch down (and then back up) to the lower-priced $40/month plan if I don't need the full 5gb a month that the higher plan provides.
Sure, you don't get a telephone with the Touch + MiFi solution (although Skype works well if you add a microphone to your Touch), but not everyone wants/needs a phone...and for those who want primarily data/WiFi/Web, the MiFi with a Touch will give an iPhone a real run for its money.
I'll also add that the original poster may just need access to more hotspots - i.e., other than those that advertise "free" WiFi. If that's the case, she might consider something like a Boingo membership which will get her online in many places...including just about every McDonalds in the US.

  • Hi. I have temporarily moved away from home. I am using a different internet connection, and I have lost my bookmarks. How do I get them back?

Hi. I have temporarily moved away from home. I am using a different internet connection, and I have lost my bookmarks. How do I get them back?

Generally speaking, your bookmarks are private to your computer, and if you set up multiple Firefox profiles on your computer, to the one profile.
Your bookmarks might be available to you at another location if you used the Sync service. In order to connect a new computer to the Sync service when you aren't near your old computer, you need a recovery key. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/share-bookmarks-tabs-and-more-your-other-computers#w_what-if-im-not-near-my-first-computer
If you didn't use Sync or can't access your account, someone with access to your old computer could email you your bookmarks. Since there is a range of different ways to do that and the best choice might depend on what you can expect the person you ask to be able to do... could they start up Firefox in your profile and follow menu steps to export a file? Could they drill down into a hidden folder on the system, zip a file, and mail that to you? Etc.

  • Unable to connect to Wi-Fi away from home

My iPhone 5 refuses to connect to any Wi-Fi network while I'm away from home.  I'm able to connect to and use my home Wi-Fi network without any problems. However, when I'm at Starbucks, traveling, work, etc., I'm unable to connect to any Wi-Fi network.  I've taken the following troubleshooting steps without success:
    1)  Initially, I reset network settings thinking this would be a quick fix.  No success.
    2)  I then deleted all backups on iCloud (to rule out a corrupt backup being the cause, performed a new backup to iCloud, and then performed a deep restore to iOS 7.1.1 via iTunes recovery mode.
I'm still unable to connect to any Wi-Fi network besides my home network.  Any advice on how to remedy this would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

I'm able to see the available networks, but after selecting the appropriate network, my iPhone fails to connect.  I read somewhere that toggling Airplane mode may fix the problem I'm having.  I have since tried that to no avail.

  • HT1976 iPhone 5 has suddenly stopped connecting to the internet away from home

My iPhone 5 has suddenly stopped connecting to the internet when away from home. It was fine last Wednesday, then on Thursday all I got was 'Safari is no longer connected to the internet'. I cannot use the Messaging, Find my Friends etc.
As far as I know I have not done anything to alter any settings, but I did change my password on Wednesday - which works, so I think that's OK.
Has anyone any idea what is happening?

Using Outlook 2007 I want to receive emails on my iPhone 4 only when Outlook is NOT open on my computer, as when away from home or want to quickly check email when computer is not turned on. Either ALL emails come to my iPhone or none at all. Is the setting I need to change in Outlook or on the iPhone or is it somewhere else?  I used to have this setting but transferring Outlook to a new laptop somehow turned it off.

No. You really can't do that. Not easily at any rate. You would have to set them both up to use POP3, but even then there is no way to guarantee that the phone won't poll the server prior to your computer doing so, pulling down the message from the server.

  • Wifi works at home but not when away from home

My Wifi works at home but not when away from home, what is wrong?  I thought with a phone plan I didn't need to have a wifi connection.

You either need WiFi or Cellular (or both). If you have neither, you can't connect to the internet.
Most people use WiFi at home and Cellular while away from home, or connect to public WiFi networks where there are some.
