IChat won't send chat invitation to my friends

Hi I didn't see anywhere to on the board for iChat 4 so I'm posting here. Basically the problem is whenever I try so start a multi-text chat with my friends PC and Mac users they don't get my chat invitations. However I can join chatrooms. I'd like some help if anyone knows the problem.

Try this.
Go to the File Menu in iChat
Select "GO to Chatroom"
It should be pre-filled with the Account Name (Screen Name) it thinks you are starting from.
Type over any Room name showing (Or type in Room Name) - You are creating one at this point.
You may also need to use the Show Participants from the View Menu.
You should now have an Empty Chatroom chat window open with the Participants drawer showing.
You can now drag Buddies to the Participants Drawer and send them a message as an Invite.
You can also use the "New Chat" option in the File menu and start A Text chat and drag multiple Buddies to the "To" Field and they will show in any Participant drawer as Waiting for Invite and you can then type a message to Invite.
NOTE
In re-testing the first Method I could not get a Text Chat window to display to add Buddies to.
I am sure I have done this since I got to iChat 4.0.7
It did work for a room I had previously created that remains in the list
The Second method worked for me.
Although my Show Participants option that used to be set to remembered across chats does not seem to remember it is supposed to be on show.
The Right Click (Control Click) method works for me.
If you find that these do not work for try deleting com.apple.iChatAgent.plist as this is the .plist for the Support App that does this Instant Messaging part.
You may Lose the setting for iChat Screen Sharing if you have set it in iChat 4

  • Ichat won't accept buddy invitation

My ichat won't accept buddy invitation, even though I click accept. It still says waiting for authorization. This is from a coworker that I've been buddies with already whose screenname all of a sudden quit working with me only.

    HI
This might be to do with your router.
If you used Port Forwarding to open the ports iChat uses  you may have had to Point them to an IP address (Computer).
However if you left the router issuing IP addresses via DHCP then the computer may have changed IP, causing the Port Setting not to be pointing to the computer and it's current IP address.
Using UPnP in the router instead or Port Forwarding gets around this (If the device has UPnP)
Don't use both together as they conflict.
If the Mac Firewall Is On also check the Advanced button to see that iChat is Allowed.  (In the List)

  • IChat won't send written messages...but will connect to do an audio chat...

I'm not sure what happened, but my iChat just stopped sending text-based messages. I can log on, click on a person, and type a message, but it won't send. I can, however, connect and do an audio chat. Has anyone had this happen before??

    Hi,
    Next Bit.
In iChat > Preferences > Accounts then the Server Settings tab, what is the Login port currently in use ?
For AIM Logins this is normally 5190 by default. We post about changing it to 443
Is SSL an Option for you and is it Selected ?
Try it deselected if you have it (iChat 5) - you need to be logged out to make changes.
iChat logs in on port 5190 on the TCP Protocol with any Buddy list that accesses the AIM Service.
It also uses this same port but on the UDP Protocol for File Sending, Direct IMs (Those with Pica and Files sent in them) and group chats. Some Buddy list Feedback is also on UDP.
Changing the Login port separates the dual use.
If the AIM SSL server goes down iChat needs a manual reset to get it to work again.
If changing either of those does not produce any changes then try Deleting the Account/Screen Name from iChat then Re-adding it again.
You will not lose your Buddy List as it is held at the server end.

  • My iChat won't send or receive messages.  It shows as online to me but offline to other users.

I have just gotten a new mac and I'm trying to set up my ichat.  I went through the normal ichat process to set it up but it won't send or receive messages or let me add a buddy.

    Hi,
    So iChat is Launched.
You can se a Buddy List fror what ever Screen Name type this is ?
However although it reads Available at Your end anyone beyond your Mac Firewall and the Routing device do not see you as On Line ?
Have yoiu set up several Screen Name /Buddy Lists ?
Is one set to Invisible ?
Are they linked in to one list via the setting in iChat Menu > Preferences > General Section ?

  • ICal won't send meeting invitations; can't recognize My card

    Hello,
I have searched for this issue, and found a related article, but the fix didn't work for me. Here's the other article:
iCal unable to send the invitation; needs address card...
So when I try to send a meeting invitation using iCal, as soon as I type someone's email address, a message pops up:
"Calendar will be unable to send the invitation. - To be able to send invitations, you need to add your email address to your card in Contacts. '(null)' is not a valid email address"
I have tried creating a new card, restarted the system, reverted back to another card, but nothing works. I can no longer send meeting invitations. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Faisal

After speaking with Apple tech support, this turned out to be a contacts corruption issue. If i recall correctly, I did the following:
    - Exported all contacts using the *Export vCard option"
    - Exported all contacts again using the "Contacts Archive" option
    - Closed mail, contacts, calendar, rebooted the system
    - Opened Library/Preferences folder and deleted all instances of com.apple.addressbook*
    - Removed google account completely
    - There were a couple of other files that I was asked to delete. Sorry but I can't remember at this time
    - Rebooted the mac
    - Created a new entry for my card, and made it my own card.
    - Opened calendar, and added a new event; sent the event to a test email
    - Opened contacts. Imported all contacts using the vCard option
    - Re-added Google account
    - Back to normal.
    Hope this helps others.

  • IChat won't send or receive photos

    Hi,
I have a problem with iChat. I'm using it with an AOL account, and it has been working great. But a month ago, photo sending started to failure. I only have one friend on my friend list, because the photo sending feature is so convenient and snappy. If I try to send a photo, the loading circle on the photo is blank and in about 1-2 minutes, iChat will say "Connection to the AIM server timed out. try again." (I'm from Finland, so I have Finnish iChat, so the translation is a bit bad.)
And if my friend tries to send photo, he gets an error which says: "Waiting for acceptance of Mikko...". So I suppose that the fault is somehow in my computer. Oddly, problems started if I remember correctly when I downloaded IM+ Pro for my iPad. But we've tried to reinstall our AOL accounts, remove AOL from IM+ Pro but no luck.
There are also several more errors which can occur, such as "Could not directly connect. The connection suddenly disconnected." Sometimes when I woke my MacBook from sleep, iChat doesn't automaticly connect. Me and my friend have 10.7.2.
Okay, so there's the problem. Any solutions are greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance!

    HI,
In total is using Bonjour, Jabber, AIM and Yahoo and A/V chats in iChat it will want to use 20 or so ports
AIM Logins (AIM And Apple @mac.com and @me.com) use port 443 in iChat 6
However File Transfers (Files send separately by dropping the file on the Buddy';s name in the List  or in a Text Chat) change port to port 5190.
The Internet also uses different Protocols (FTP to Load Web Sites,  HTTP for Web Browsing other apps use either TCP and UDP as a rule and iChat uses both at different times)
Most routers will allow all ports up to and including port 1024.
Ports above this need to be allowed in some form  (there are different methods).
Enabling UPnP in a router will cover the Port and the Protocol  (In an Apple Base Station this is Port Mapping Protocol that does the same job)
If you are using Port Forwarding to open ports this does not always list the Protocol.
Port Triggering will need to list Protocols.

  • IChat won't read chat transcripts

When I check my ~/Documents/iChats folder some of the chat transcripts have just the white document icon, are labled as "iChat Document" in the "kind" column, and have the extension ".ichat", which is visible. iChat is unable to read these transcripts although if iChat is not already open it will launch but not display any windows.
A few weird things about these unreadable transcripts:
Under the Get Info window the "Hide Extension" option is checked and greyed out even thought the extension is not hidden.
If I change the extension to ".chat" (which is the extension of the readable transcripts) then iChat will open up a blank chat window with the message "Message (Don't Localize)" displayed in the grey area at the bottom.
I have not been able to see any pattern to the unreadable transcripts and it appears completely random.
I have no idea what is going on here, but I would very much like to read all those transcipts, so any help would be greatly appriciated.

  • IChat won't send messages

for the last few days I have opened iChat and attempted to initiate a chat. I can type in text, but when I hit ENTER, nothing is sent. The text does disappear from the text box as if it was sent, but nothing appears in the chat window. In fact, the little speech bubble that appears when you type just stays up next to my screen name. Help!

    Hi Jason,
iChat 4 will open any old chat that was open when you Quit iChat.
It will also remember the position of that window as the where it was in the Screen or Dock or Hidden.
If you go to iChat menu > Preferences > Messages you will find the option to Remember Open Chats across Launch.
If you deselect this you will not get old chats from the previous time iChat was Open.
Deleting the .plist that saves the details (com.apple.ichat.plist) will also remove the last one that was held.
Just closing the window using the Red Button or Saying No to Rejoining chants does not dismiss it from the held status until another chats is still open (If if you left or the Buddy left but the window is open) at Quit.
Deleting the one above and the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist will cause you get the Start Up Screens Again but your Screen Name should be pre-filled as it is called back from the KeyChain.

  • IChat Video Chat Invite Issues

On iChat i will send and invitation it will not show i sent one and my friends dont get them. I also cannot receive the invites. PLEASE HELP ME!!!

All i could find about uninstalling iChat pro.
"You see where in the installer it has a warning notice to the effect of, "Make a backup of iChat.app first. This will be the only way to restore the default contact list."? Yeah. So if you didn't, have fun digging out your Mac OS X DVD. Pacifist will help you extract just the iChat installer, I suspect."
    To reinstall iChat.
Put in your install disk 1(the disk that came with your mac or the Leopard install DVD) then after the disk has opened double click on "Optional installs" then double click on the "Optional installs.mpkg".
Then when you get to "Custom install......." click on the triangle by appications and then tick iChat and then continue with the install.
When done download and install the 10.6.2 combo to bring iChat back up to date.

  • How do I fix my ichat? My buddy list appears, but whenever I try to click on a buddy to chat, IChat won't let me. Nothing appears. When I try to click on "File" - "New Chat" Also nothing appears. What's wrong?

My buddy list appears, but whenever I try to click on a buddy to chat, IChat won't let me. Nothing appears. It won't let me chat regularly via text, or by video/audio chat. Even when I click on File -> New Chat, still nothing shows up! But, when I look at how many chats I have open, it says I have "X" amount of chats open! But nothing is there.........
If somebody tries to video chat me from my buddy list, I can see the request.... and then the video chat will work. But I cannot request anybody and if they send me a regular text ichat, ichat won't deliver it to me.
Somebody please help me I've tried so many things and nothing is working!!!!! :/

    Hi,
This sounds like it is about Window positions.
iChat has Default places for Incoming Invites.
Video is always top Center of your Screen
Audio and Text chats are Upper right with the Audio slightly lower than Text Chats.
Secondary invites are sort of Stacked like when you open multiple files from the same App.
Your outgoing Windows are "Remembered" as to where the last one was when you used it.
This can be an issue if you use your Mac with a second display and turn Off Mirroring.
You windows can get "left" on the other screen.
Go to System Preferences > Displays and turn On Mirroring and the windows should come back to one Screen/display.
If this does not help go to your Home Folder/Library/Preferences and delete (Drag to Trash) com.apple.ichat.plist and restart iChat.
Unfortunately you will need to reset any iChat Preferences you have changed from defaults.

  • IChat WON'T WORK using audio or video chatting [PLEASE HELP]

Bought a Mac a couple months ago and I'm pretty (yeah, that's VERY) happy about it. The thing is when it comes down to my iChat, I wanted so much to have video conference with my family in Brazil while I'm studying in Spain -- but I Just can't! =(
Let's put it that way: iChat won't recognize my (Googlechat) friends and their webcams; and as long as I'm connected, I have never seen any sort of "audio label" beside their names.
So can any Mac-pro please help me out explaining what the matter is?
Can't I talk to my friends just because the're using PCs -- or there's nothing to do with it?
I've tried everything, from Preferences to Praying; and it won't work. Just wanna let you guys know that all the people that I'm trying to talk to have webcams and microphones plugged-in.
PS - Plus, I got this huge agenda full of contacts (around 2,000) that appear to be on my iChat list, but they're somehow never online. Is that because I have to send them an invitation to join my Googlechat? =/
    I'm totally lost here.
I'd appreciate if you people could answer me quick - as you always do here =). Tomorrow I'll have this unique chance to talk to my grandmother (for she's living in some sort of farm far away from civilized world) and I'd REALLY want to chat via Video Conference with my family tomorrow night.
Sorry for my bad english and thanks in advance.

    Hi,
You can Add an Google Mail ID (@gmail.com or @googlemail.com) as your ID/screen Name in iChat.
From iChat to iChat this will also do Video or Audio Chats as well as Text chats.
From iChat to anyone using the Google Web Mail page you can text chat as the Video and Audio codecs are different.
The same is true of the PC app for GoogleTalk.
To be able to login in to Google Talk using iChat your have to Enter you ID as it is written on any Google Page when you are logged in (Ends with either @gmail.com or @google.com), Mail seems to cope with either but iChat needs it to match.
You also have to Enable the Talk option on your Google Account info.
To See the Green Video and audio icons go to the View Menu of ichat and Select Show Audio and Show Video.
If you are trying to Chat with a PC I would use one of these
Alternatives to iChat but Video chatting In a Web Browser
MeBeam. An option to use a Web site that create Private room for Video Chatting. Uses Flash to access your Camera and Mic.
iVideoChat Similar setup but a somewhat corporate type look to the site. Has Public rooms as well. Again uses Flash.
Googlemail/GoogeTalk now do a Version in a Web Browser
Tokbox A Site that can link your existing Buddy Lists that Uses Flash to Video chat in a Browser.
    From http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/page5.html#_other
Tokbox allows you to link to existing Buddy Lists.

  • Ichat works with macs, but can't send/accept invites with pcs

bear with me, still a newbie/read discussions, this is my 1st post. audio ichat ok with mac friend, but ichat menu options won't allow invite audio or video chat with sister using pc, even though i downloaded aim 6.7 in addition to ichat. i have road runner and digital videocam with firewire, sister has comcast with logitech quickcam, she was able to ichat with mac friends. i've read ichat help & discussions, contacted applecare & roadrunner & aol, no luck...
    1) should i uninstall aim6.7?
    2) ichat preference shows camera/mic/bandwidth/but no port option, need to open port 443 with firewall on? how? where?
    3) what info is my query missing?
    4) i'll upgrade to 10.5 + airport express + 20"display soon, will that cause other issues?
    5) is this a repair permissions issue somehow? i've pulled tips on weekly maintenance. my entire family is waiting, i'm at a complete loss...please help.
    thanks, teta bepa

    howdy steve,
good news first. ichat worked a-ok with my mac friend. i have os10.3.9, ichat av2.1.3, panasonic digvidcam w/ firewire. mac friend has os10.4.1, ichat av3.1.8, imace w/ isight. simple as pie, no problem to start ichat, good sound and video, couldn't have been easier. connection doctor info looked fine too, video and audio at 100%. yippee!
this mac friend had previously been able to ichat with my pc sister, not perfect, but they certainly made contact for videochat. as for my contact w/ pc sister, i'm still trying and hoping...
pc sister upgraded her aim to version 6.5.4.16, via comcast.net by the way. i also told her to allow aim6.exe exception in firewall, and directed her to ralphjohnsuk info too. we both shut off our firewalls, as had my mac friend. FINALLY in my buddy menu options, i was able to send videochat invite to my sister. ichat said "sending invite" and "starting videochat" but that's as far as it got. at least the connection doctor did not mention "no response" or failed or anything like that, connection doctor just seemed to wait for audio/video info.
what do you think is going on? it seems we're very close to actual videochat. at least my mac is getting fewer error messages, it's waiting for videochat to start. the even bigger mystery is...how could my mac friend have previously gotten videochat w/ my pc sister, but nothing now?
now we 3 are at wit's end as to how to loop in my pc sister. i truly appreciate any insight you may offer. thanks for your time and expertise. take care.
    teta bepa
(by the way, i'm upgrading to os10.5 and will attempt videochat when i'm wireless w/ airport.)

How do I get Video and Audio Chats with PCs ? iChat FAQ 3 (Updated 3/4/2009)
Applies to iChat 2.x, iChat 3.x and iChat 4.x to any version of AIM on a PC before AIM 6.1See bottom section on AIM 6.5 and 6.8 on XP and Vista.
This piece is designed for those trying to connect Mac to PC for Video and Audio chats. Any iChat version Panther and up.
Glossary For This FAQ This bit is designed for clarity.
Video is the sending and /or receiving of pictures and sound.
Audio is the sending and or receiving of sound only.
One-Way is the ability to start either an Audio or Video chat from one end to a recipient who can not match your capabilities (or Vice Versa)
    What is needed
    At the Mac end
A Mac running OS 10.3.x and iChat AV ver 2.1 or 10.4 plus iChat 3 or Leopard and iChat 4
A DSL/Cable/Fibre (Broadband) connection of at least an up link speed of 256kbs.
An AIM , @mac.com or MobileMe (@me.com) account name.
(hosting Multiple person Mac to Mac AV chats requires higher specs and broadband uplink speed).
    At the PC end
1 PC running windows XP (home or Pro). THIS A MUST
The AIM Standalone Application, currently at ver. 5.9 at this link.  AIM (the Site)  now call this version Classic and it cannot  be Installed On Vista     AIM is now up to version AOL Instant Messenger 7.5.8.3
Note: there is also Trillian which has a Pro version for $25 that can also Video and Audio chat. The Basic version just Texts and Audio Chats (AIM does not Audio chat) This Pro Version was version 3.2 They now offer version 4
Some need the aimrtc12.exe file from  Here Mostly Earlier than XP or Pre Service Pack 2 XP versions of Windows
An AIM account/screen name (AOL or Netscape count as well) http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/page12.html#_Service
Service Pack 2 info. This info will allow the PC user to enable AIM thorough the XP Firewall (It applies to later versions of WIndows as well).
The Windows Firewall did not exist as such before this.
    Between both of you.
At least one camera (Mac end works better)
A sound input device (the camera, if it has one is ok)
Your Buddies screen/account name in each others Buddy Lists.
    Other tweaks
For some people, using AIM on a PC, may also have to make sure their preferences (properties) are set in the AIM Buddy list, for their camera and /or Mic. (Tuning at Message 570)
This is an icon button lower right on the Buddy List marked "Prefs" (AIM 5.5). This leads to the Preferences. Drop down the list until you read Live Video. Click on this. In the new window that opens click the button that says Tuning Video and Audio. Follow the instructions in the wizard that opens up. Access in AIM 5.9 for this is in the My AIM menu at the top of the Buddy list and then Options
    To Start
You should now be able to chat to each other.  If each of you has a camera it can be full Video , as described in the Glossary at the top.
To start from the Mac end, select (highlight) your Buddy with one click. His camera icon should be dark. Click on the icon near his name or the one at the bottom of the Buddy List. (You do not have to start a text chat).
To start from the PC end you need to start a text chat, then select the Video icon at the bottom of the chat window.
If one of you has a camera and the other has a Mic then you will be able to chat One Way but have sound will be both ways.
To start this type of chat from the Mac end you will have to go to the menu item "Buddies" and drop down to the item "Invite to One Way Video Chat" (In later versions of iChat this is added to the right/Control Click pop up menu)
To start this from a PC follow the directions in the paragraph above. You may need to change the tab to the incoming Video at the back of the two to see the Video. These tabs are added when the Video chat starts and the front one normally states you do not have a camera and shows a connection to buy one.
It is also possible to chat One Way if the other person does not have a Mic: replies will have to be typed in a Text chat.
No Camera and No Mic will cause iChat to End the chat with "No Data Received for 10 Secs"
    Summary
PC end gets AIM 5.9 or Trillian Pro.
The PC end allows the app through the XP Firewall.
AIM 5.9 needs "Tuning" to Camera and  Mic.
For any sort of sound to a PC using AIM, (Talk in PC or Audio in iChat) the Mac will need a camera.
The other person can have a Mic and then live chats with sound both ways and Pictures (Video) One-Way.
NOTE: At This Time It Is NOT Possible to Audio (sound only) between Mac & PC with AIM & iChat Trillian Basic can Audio. Trillian Pro  can Video and has a bigger picture and can do Full Screen.  Another explanation of the set up can be found Here about AIM 5.5 but is transferable  to AIM 5.9. And Also here My Web Pages particularly all of Page 12: What if your Girlfriend Lives a Long Way Away ? have more information.
AIM 6.5 and 6.8 On Vista and XP
AIM 5.9 or earlier can not be installed on Vista.
AIM 6.5 and 6.8 use a new video codec with a description of "Real Time IM" AIM have an FAQ page about this.
Under the title about Requirements  is this quote.
What do I need to use Real-Time IM? You and your buddy need to be using AIM® 6.8 or higher to use Real-Time IM. Unfortunately, Real-Time IM does not yet work with older AIM clients, iChat®, or AIM® for Mac®.
See items 5 through 13 on this page for alternatives including Web Browser based ones.

  • IChat won't initiate any form of chat

I have several Macs on a network (some with a wired connection, some with airport), and we often use iChat over Bonjour to communicate (all are running 10.5.6 and iChat 4.0.7).
One of our iMacs won't initiate chats. If we try to send a message to one of the other computers, it appears to start the chat session, but the receiving computer never gets a notification. It doesn't matter if it is a text chat, audio chat or video chat. This iMac receives chats that are initiated from another machine with no problem.
This one iMac ONLY uses Bonjour (there are no other iChat accounts set up on it) and, as I stated above, seems to be the only machine with this problem. I have tried deleting the appropriate plist files from the preferences folder, and that hasn't made any difference. I'm at a loss for other solutions.
    Any suggestions?

On the errant computer make sure the Firewall setting (System Preferences > Security) is not set to Essentials.
This does not work for iChat as it is not an essential App.
Also make sure that the Mac User Logged in on that computer is not someone also logged in somewhere else.
Bonjour for iChat takes the Name found in the Address Book at the My Card (Head and Shoulders icon).

  • Bounced aif file won't send through ichat

I just mixed down (bounced a stereo 44.1 24 bit file and wanted to i chat the file back east (ichat aim) and a error occured. the file is around 81m.
I did another test where i recorded in logic a aif file (not bounced) and this one i was able to send.
anybody know why it won't send larger bounced files?

IChat apparently tries to render in the window all the files it can read directly (pdf, jpeg, aiff, etc), my guess is that your transfer fails because of this. The already cited solution of zipping the file works well and saves you some transfer time, as the files decreases in size. However, if your connection is fast (like between two machines in a LAN) or if you don't care about the transfer time then dragging the file to the buddy name without a chat window previously open with that buddy drives iChat to copy it directly without trying to preview the file.
