IChat won't start up

I'm trying to troubleshoot my daughter's relatively new iBook running tiger (10.4.3, I think). She's away at college so I can't get my hands on her computer. Everytime she attempts to launch iChat it briefly opens a window then immediately closes and shuts down the program. I suspect the problem may be that she had AOL installed and then later uninstalled it. Prior to uninstalling AOL her iChat worked fine. I am guessing that the preferences in her account are screwed up, perhaps as a result of the AOL uninstall, but I can't seem to get to them because she can't successfully launch iChat. Any suggestions?

Hello and welcome to the apple discussion pages.
first, can you confirm her version of OS X and the version of iChat. current versions are 10.4.3 and 3.1 (v417).
Second, try to repair permissions and run maintance scripts.
third, when did the behavior first start? was it after an install of anything new?
Fouth, are you sure AOL has been uninstalled or did she just delete it. she should run the installer and use the uninstaller to get it all out.
if after all the above, you may need to get a crash report to see if we can find what is going wrong.

  • IChat won't start after 10.4.3 update!!!!!

After I installed 10.4.3 iChat won't start. It would look like it was going to Launch and would quit. I looked at all the postings and found a couple of ideas, but nothing that worked. The only way I can get on is by disabling my network connection and then starting iChat and then re enabling my network connection. Any other ideas. Please let me know.

Ralph, no offense, I know you're trying to help this guy, but all you've done to offer him advice is to tell him what he already said he's doing and was trying to not have to perform every single time he wants to use iChat.
In his ORIGINAL post, he said exactly this:
The only way I can get on is by disabling my network connection and then starting iChat and then re enabling my network connection.
Please try and really read what someone asking for help is saying, then offer advice if you've got it. All it looks like here is that you weren't really paying attention to his problem in the first place.
As for me, I'm having much the same problem as a lot of people getting iChat to work, and I clicked on this seeing it had a reply thinking I was going to finally find an answer. It's a little frustrating to see people reply with exactly the same information they've already been given just being repeated back to them.

  • IChat Won't Start

I am posting this for my friend who has a Macbook with Tiger 10.4.11 and iChat av 3.1.9. His iChat won't start up for some reason, that we are not sure of. We would click on the application and it would bounce for a while then come up and say "iChat has quit unexpectedly" then we would click retry, but with the same results. We don't have the initial Mac OS cd, but we tried deleting his current iChat and sharing my iChat(same version) with him. This still didn't work so we need some help to get his iChat up and running!

    Hi,
By default iChat should be in the Applications folder.
However a Previous moved copy may be linked to the icon on the DOCK.
You can find out where it thinks this coy is by Click and holding the iCon in the DOCK for the menu and then selecting *Show in Finder. * This will show the folder where that version is.
Now you should Right Click (Control Click) the name of the window that is open and it will show you the folder(s) that it is in.
    If it reads:
    Applications
    (Hard Drive name)
(Possibly Computer name if showing in the side Bar)
This it will be in the right place.
As the Log (errorLogLevel7) thing did not work I expect it will show it is somewhere else.
I ma not sure why the dyld item shows right after your
    /Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7 part.
This may be a typo in entering the TERMINAL instruction.

  • Updated to Lion OS now IChat won't start up.

Updated to Lion OS and now IChat won't work.  When you try to start it you get the top portion of the icon with you picture and the camera icon to video chat but no buddies and all of the options in the menu are grayed out.

Check the hosts file or TCP/IP filtering, which might cause communication issues between iTunes, ports, and servers.

I've tried changing the ports, trying different bandwith speeds using both quicktime stream settings and the bandwith limit settings, but to no avail. Firewall is set to allow all incoming connections. The connection does work sometimes with people up here at school on the wireless network.
Any help is much appreciated ahead of time
    Thank You

    a few things to check..
    1. On your Mac, make sure your iChat AIM port is set to 443.
    2. On your router at home, make sure you have UPnP turned-on.
    3. On your Mac, set your Quicktime streaming speed to 1.5 Mbps T1/Internet LAN
    4. On your Mac, set iChat video bandwidth limit to 1Mbps.
    5. On your Mac, test your wireless bandwidth speed using http://www.speedtest.com/ You might not have enough effective bandwidth over your wireless router. This is even more true if you are a few rooms away from your wireless router. If the test shows an up/down bandwidth of about <500Kbps then you probably have a problem with your wireless.
    6. On your Mac, test your Internet performance over Ethernet by hooking up your Mac directly to the router; that is, don't use wireless. If this works, then it's probably your wireless connection and not the Mac or the Apple Genius bar.

  • Ichat won't start at all

Since security update 2008-007 version 1.0 that I just installed today, ichat has stopped working. I can't even see the preferences menu item to try to change to port 443 as a test I saw suggested in another topic on this forum. What can I do? Should I reinstall ichat?

    Repair permissions.
Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Highlight your Mac's HD and click the Repair Disk Permissions button near the bottom.
    Then restart ichat.

  • Mail & iChat won't launch - Please help

    Hey guys
So I was trying to make a clone of a HD from another computer using Carbon Copy Cloner because I was going to wipe it out and install Tiger. I wanted to make a backup copy to my computer so I used Target Mode to bring my computer's HD to the host computer and make the copy. This was the first time I used CCC so instead of making the HD an image file I selected Choose Target or something like that, then it started making a copy of it directly to my computer's HD. I stopped it when I saw it was copying all the files and folder to my computer's HD, I mean, I thought it would make a separate folder with the name of the HD I was trying to make a backup of and put everything in it. But no, I was wrong. Then I was able to make it an image file. Backed it up, everything ready for wipe out. After finishing with the backup I erased it, and then installed Tiger without a problem. Going back to my computer I encountered a problem, Mail and iChat won't launch. My guess is that when CCC started making the clone to my comp's HD it messed up something somewhere on my computer affecting them. So I'm asking you guys if you can give me a hand on how to fix this problem. If anybody knows how to make them work again please let me know as I need them to work, they're part of my work's tools.
Thanks a lot and I really appreciate your help!

  • Ichat won't open after leopard installation

I installed Leopard on 3 imacs and on my teenaged daughter's computer ichat won't connect. The message she gets is: "Could not connect to AIM...try again in a few minutes" But every time we wait and try again we still get the same message. The internet connection is fine. Any ideas? Should I reinstall Leopard???

    Hi Barbara,
If the Buddy List does not Appear and the Accounts are not listed in either the Window menu or the iChat Menu > Accounts then I only know of the Activity Monitor route.
The com.apple.ichat.plist (and others) are in Users/(here account)/Library/Preferences
She has to navigate there manually either from the Finder Window side bar or from the hard Drive (or her house icon is the same a Her Account).
I this case if iChat is open (but not showing anything except the menu bar) I would open Activity Monitor and find both iChat (with icon and iChatAgent (without icon)
Quit iChat. It should disappear in Activity Monitor.
iChatAgent stays there for a while. That is why it say Force Quit it.
Once both are quit I would delete all the .plist for ichat
    Then restart iChat.
it will use the Keychain and Address Book to prefill the Start Up Screens which she can click through.
This problems seems to be caused by a sudden drop out of the AIM server and corrupt info being in the .plist
It seems different people find it is different .plist that are effected, which is why I suggest dumping all of them.
    If this does not work.
While iChat is still open go to iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Server settings and change the port to 443 but without the SSL login.
If you do not have access to the preferences repeat the above and restart the computer not connected to the internet and then start iChat. It will still report it can not Login but should give you access to the Preferences.

  • Attn: macbook pro won't start up past grey screen NO MATTER WHAT

my macbook pro won't start up past the grey screen, NO MATTER WHAT I DO. i've searched all the discussions on this, and NOTHING WORKS. nothing caused this either - i was just browing the internet and using ichat, and my computer shut down, and that is when this started.
I am EXTREMELY disappointed with this bullstein. My computer works great, etc., and I support mac and apple to the nth degree, but then some stupid crap like this happens and I can't use my computer at all. I have to use my sister's **** ibook g3 to even do this.
PLEASE HELP. do NOT post what you have already posted in the other discussions, and i've already been welcomed to the boards. I can't go to an apple store because i'm on vacation in new mexico for the summer, and there no stores anywhere near here. is there any real advice around here? I need to use my computer. That is why I spent close to $4,000 for it with upgrades and software.

where can i get an install disc for the macbook pro?
You really need to use the one that came with your MBP. If you don't have it, a retail Tiger OS X disc should work.
also, could an archive/install potentially free up some harddrive space on my computer?
No, it will actually use more space, so you will need at least 6G of free space. To clean your hard drive, use WhatSize.

  • Safari, iChat won't launch ?

Need advice, can't launch Safari or iChat. Or it will take them 10-15 minutes to launch.
This started after I was trying to do a secure erase on an external
    firewire hard drive.
I think Disk Utility hung because the progress bar wasn't advancing
after an hour and it never completed the process. So I had to do a Force
    Quit of Disk Utility.
Thereafter, I first had problems with doing a normal Restart. That now
seems OK after a Force Restart and a couple of regular Restarts.
But what is still a problem is Safari and iChat won't launch either from
the dock or from their location. They either show the arrow below their
icon in the dock or they do the bouncing thing but they don't launch.
Any advice as how to repair. I've run DU and Disk Warrior but all was OK
    and still doing it.
    Thanks for any advice.
    Powerbook G4 Ti   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

First, use Disk Utility from the hard drive to repair permissions. Check the following for possible fixes:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607542&#607542

        • If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
(Likely suspects are TimesRO & Helvetica Fractions, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.)
    2. Check Preferences Thoroughly:
        • Go to Users/Your_Name/Library/Preferences and trash the files:
        - com.apple.ATS.plist
        - com.apple.BezelServices.plist
Restart. If this did not help, go to Users/Your_Name/Library and drag the folder Preferences to the desktop. Restart and see if this solved the problem
        • Navigate to YourHome/Library/Preferences drag this folder to the desktop.
        • Restart and test your applications.
        • If this works, save the old preferences folder somewhere else or on disk, name it "old prefs."
** Note: A very important file is the "com.apple.Mail.plist" preference file located in the Preferences folder which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences (hold this one and replace if your problem is not with Mail).
You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them. (Or if you have the time and inclination, "cherry pick" through until you find the problem one or two.)
    3. Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
        • Navigate to yourhome/library.
        • Get Info (Command + i) on the "Applications Support" folder.
        • Open the "Ownership & permissions" disclosure triangle.
        • Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
        • Click on "apply to all"
        • If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same procedure (Command+I) for the folder names of the applications with which you are having trouble.
    Note:
The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.

  • IChat Service cannot start anymore.

About 2 months ago after i removed the iChat service i renamed my harddrive from HD 2 to HD2 (without the space) because of certain problems. Today i wanted to install the iChat service again but it won't start due to many problems. I think the reason is it still looks for it's files on HD 2. I don't know if there's anything i can change.
For instance, it can't find the /etc/jabberd/router-filter.xml .. but the file is there, just not on HD 2 but on HD2.
Anybody knows how to change this ? Maybe a pref or config file somewhere ?
    Thanks.
    Arno

When you say you removed it, did you delete the files?
If you did and you added them back, I suspect they have the wrong owner.
    They should be _jabberd.

  • Ever since i downloaded skype to chat with a friend with a pc my ichat won't open

ever since I downloaded skype to video chat with a friend with a pc my ichat won't open - suggestions?

    Hi,
So the DOCK looks like this ?  (Or at least the Lion version of that)
The Menu Bar Icon looks like this ?
Ok if the App is open and you click once on the icon  (Speech Bubble with Camera) in the DOCK all that will happen is that any iChat Window will come to the front.
This of course does need there to be an Open iChat Window.
Can you access the iChat Menu itself and Preferences from there ?
In the accounts section does it list any Accounts apart from the Bonjour one ?
In the Account info tab (If there is more tan one tab) does it say Use this Account and is the check box ticked ?
If before quitting iChat you close all the Windows including the Buddy List and then Quit iChat it will remember the Window state when you start it up again.
In fact the Window menu will tell you which Accounts are Logged in and these (if more than one) should match the "Use this Account" ones in the iChat Preferences.
Using the red button only "Hides" the Buddy List it does not log it out or Quit the app.
Does the Window menu list any Account  like this pic does ?
(Example from iChat 4 with the Chax Add on (more Menu items) icons)
Does the Menu Bar icon (Second pic above) show you any Buddies in the drop down you see ?
This is my drop down menu for iChat 4 when iChat is Off
As you can see it says it is Off Line.
Selecting "Available" does nor launch the app for me either as it does not know which of the 6 Screen Names I usually Login is the one I want to be "Available"
I can understand the Menu (Drop Down) may have changed in iChat 6.
Nothing you have added in the last two posts indicates to me that Skype is in any way responsible  (Not that I would normally wnaty to defend it)
Neither does it point  to anything but a normal functions of iChat if you close it down in a certain way.
Also check the System Preferences > General Pane in Lion (it is called Appearance in earlier versions)
This has a new setting that can set for all App the ability to remember which windows were open the next time the app is launched.  (i.e if a graphics app had a pallet open this would be remembered. However if all windows are closed but the app is still running when Quit this "windowless State" would be the one remembered)
(What is does do for iChat is return the "Remember  Open Chats on Quit" from iChat 4 that got lost in iChat 5)

  • Appleworks won't start

I thought I was having memory issues with my computer and bought an external hard drive and added more ram. I have moved files to the ext. HD and restarted and now have 18G free space on Mac HD. Appleworks still will not start up. I tried reinstalling from restore disks but double clicking the Install icon won't start up that program to custom install applications. Other programs open fine - ichat, preview, imovie, quicken, etc. Any idea what is wrong and how to fix?

I thinks it's quite possible that you have run into the "Recent Items bug" & it has been around since AppleWorks 6 was released in March, 2000. It can make it appear that AppleWorks has frozen or failed to launch. Reinstalling AppleWorks doesn't fix it. The user tip by Dale Gillard, AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?, explains a lot.

  • IChat won't recognize my MacBook's internal mic and allow me to audio chat

I have a MacBook which has built-in iSight and a built-in microphone. My iChat won't let me audio chat with my friends who are using AIM or Google Talk however the internal microphone is working. It works on Skype. It won't work on iChat at all however. It does not let me start audio chats or accept them. How can I get it to do that?
    Thanks!

    Hi kathleenmary:
Audio only chats only work Mac to Mac or Mac to PC's using Trillian.
    Sorry!

  • SAP won't start after recabeling sap system

    Hi,<br>
    <br>
I have recently recabled my sap system (from wireless to wired) and now my sap instance won't start anymore. The weird thing is that nothing major was changed. When i read the logs from the work directory it seems it cannot load dbsdbslib.dll. I have updated to the latest version of the kernel and maxdb (kernel=7.00 patch 221, maxdb=7.6.06.07) and i made very sure i got the right kernel (NT AMD64). I also checked the environment settings for the <sid>adm user. The weird part is that it seems SAP cannot connect to the database, but the databse starts just fine and r3trans -d also returns no errors. Does anyone<br> have an idea what could be wrong?<br>
    <br>

    <p class=MsoNormal> </p>
    <p class=MsoNormal>To answer your questions:</p>
<p class=MsoNormal>1. Did you create the SAP ticket, where this problem is
    reported?</p>
<p class=MsoNormal>I didn't report it to SAP because it is just an IDES test
system. I can easily do a reinstall, but i would like to know the cause and
    solution to this problem.</p>
    <p class=MsoNormal> </p>
<p class=MsoNormal>2. Do you have dbsdbslib.dll at this location? What version?</p>
    <p class=MsoNormal>Yes, i have the dbsdbslib.dll at location
