Ichat won't work on macbook networked to Imac G5's airport

My daughter's macbook's ichat will not connect since networked through my iMac G5's built-in airport (not airport express - no router). Otherwise the internet connection is working for the macbook - ichat just won't connect. Does anyone have any input? is there some setting change on either computer I need to check?

This sounds like it may be an IP address issue. iChat does not like multiple connections from the same IP... and I'd imagine, if you're sharing your G5's internet connection, both machines are going out with the same IP address. If you download the standalone version of AIM (or other chat client), I believe it should work. I've only had this issue with iChat.

  • IChat won't recognize my MacBook's internal mic and allow me to audio chat

I have a MacBook which has built-in iSight and a built-in microphone. My iChat won't let me audio chat with my friends who are using AIM or Google Talk however the internal microphone is working. It works on Skype. It won't work on iChat at all however. It does not let me start audio chats or accept them. How can I get it to do that?
    Thanks!

    Hi kathleenmary:
Audio only chats only work Mac to Mac or Mac to PC's using Trillian.
    Sorry!

  • External optical drive won't work on macbook pro retina.

I have a macbook pro retina which doesn's have an optical drive. I have bought an optical drive. When I plug it in and put a disk in I can hear the disk spinning and the light comes on but nothing happens on my mac. It doesn't seem to recognise it. Any suggestions?

Just had that happen to me.
First, run Disk Utility and see if the SuperDrive (it is an Apple SuperDrive isn't it?) is listed. Is the disk you inserted shown? If not, hold down the option key and click the Apple menu - choose System Information and when that shows up, choose USB. See if it's listed there. If it is but neither the drive nor the disk you inserted appears on the Desktop, the side bar of the Finder window, or Disk Utility, return it for a refund (if it's within 14 days of purchase) or a replacement. That's what I had to do a few hours ago and the replacement works as it should.
BTW, if you want the disk you inserted back, and pressing the trackpad as you reboot doesn't eject the disk, as a last resort run Terminal and enter (copy and paste the following)
    /usr/bin/drutil eject
to try to force the disk to eject. It probably won't work (it didn't for me) but if it does, at least you get that disk back.

  • External microphone won't work on Macbook Pro

My external microphone won't work on my Macbook Pro.
My mic is an SE2200 A, and I'm pluggin that into a Behringer Eurorack UB802 (with Phantom power). This is then connected to a 1/4 inch to 3.5mm adapter so I can plug it into my Macbook Pro.
If I plug this directly into my Macbook Pro into the headphone socket (which I've been told doubles up as a mic socket), and go to Settings -> Sound -> Input, the mic does not appear on screen at all.
If I plug it into a 3.5mm to USB adapter, and plug it into a USB port on my mac, then the USB PnP Sound Device appears on the Settings -> Sound -> Input, but no sound is picked up.
Could any suggest why this isn't working?
    thanks

You have to use a cable that will break out the 3.5 mm TRRS jack into mic, L, and R.
I haven't found the right wiring yet and the cables I have tried don't seem to work.
See this post: What is the wiring digram on the MacBook Pro 3.5 mm TRRS jack?

  • Safari and iChat won't work after lion upgrade

I just completed an upgrade to lion on my 2010 Mac mini and after reboot, safari won't open a web page..it just gets stuck with the blue loading bar about 1 inch from the left and iChat won't connect either.  I've repaired permissions and rebooted several times, checked for 3rd party add-ons and still they won't work.  Help! I need Internet again.  I'm posting this on my iPad 2 because I can't get safari to load a page or download another browser like chrome or firefox:(

OK... i had a quick look around and it seems many peoples various issues were solved by just restarting their macs a few times... i downloaded the java update from the apple support site and then restarted twice and everything now working perfectly.

  • Entire site won't work on home network...?

    Searched.
My website www.renuauto.com won't work at all on my home network. I tried multiple computers and none of them will load the page.
Switch to a neighbors network on the same computer, and it loads right up.
    Strange?

Not sure what you mean by not working for 97% of the world.
I can see it with IE6 / FF on windows xp - but it is very
    wide and the
image is off to the right.
    <!--DWLayoutTable-->
    <tr bgcolor="#FFFFFF">
    <td width="945" height="503" align="center"

and its because of that width - try it set to 800px.
But its's difficult looking at the code as you are using
    frames !!! ??
    . Not recommended around here.
As you say looks like you patched code from many sources and
    you have
inline CSS in more than one frame so again difficult to
    decipher - and
it will be difficult to maintain.
The experts here may well say through away frames and use
    css, but
they may be a leap too far - so why not use tables as an
    interim step.
move all the css to external style sheets
as it is a commercial site - surely it would be much better
    to host it
on a server with it's domain name rather than redirecting,
    this would
    make things much easier.
There is very little text for the search engines to use.
    Would it not
be a good idea for some copy stating what the business is
    about, where
you are etc etc - rather than just have a
oh and although the sound has gone on Firefox, it is still
    there with
    IE6.
    Hope some of that helps

  • IChat WON'T WORK using audio or video chatting [PLEASE HELP]

Bought a Mac a couple months ago and I'm pretty (yeah, that's VERY) happy about it. The thing is when it comes down to my iChat, I wanted so much to have video conference with my family in Brazil while I'm studying in Spain -- but I Just can't! =(
Let's put it that way: iChat won't recognize my (Googlechat) friends and their webcams; and as long as I'm connected, I have never seen any sort of "audio label" beside their names.
So can any Mac-pro please help me out explaining what the matter is?
Can't I talk to my friends just because the're using PCs -- or there's nothing to do with it?
I've tried everything, from Preferences to Praying; and it won't work. Just wanna let you guys know that all the people that I'm trying to talk to have webcams and microphones plugged-in.
PS - Plus, I got this huge agenda full of contacts (around 2,000) that appear to be on my iChat list, but they're somehow never online. Is that because I have to send them an invitation to join my Googlechat? =/
    I'm totally lost here.
I'd appreciate if you people could answer me quick - as you always do here =). Tomorrow I'll have this unique chance to talk to my grandmother (for she's living in some sort of farm far away from civilized world) and I'd REALLY want to chat via Video Conference with my family tomorrow night.
Sorry for my bad english and thanks in advance.
    Sylvio Quadros (Brazil)

    Hi,
You can Add an Google Mail ID (@gmail.com or @googlemail.com) as your ID/screen Name in iChat.
From iChat to iChat this will also do Video or Audio Chats as well as Text chats.
From iChat to anyone using the Google Web Mail page you can text chat as the Video and Audio codecs are different.
The same is true of the PC app for GoogleTalk.
To be able to login in to Google Talk using iChat your have to Enter you ID as it is written on any Google Page when you are logged in (Ends with either @gmail.com or @google.com), Mail seems to cope with either but iChat needs it to match.
You also have to Enable the Talk option on your Google Account info.
To See the Green Video and audio icons go to the View Menu of ichat and Select Show Audio and Show Video.
If you are trying to Chat with a PC I would use one of these
Alternatives to iChat but Video chatting In a Web Browser
MeBeam. An option to use a Web site that create Private room for Video Chatting. Uses Flash to access your Camera and Mic.
iVideoChat Similar setup but a somewhat corporate type look to the site. Has Public rooms as well. Again uses Flash.
Googlemail/GoogeTalk now do a Version in a Web Browser
Tokbox A Site that can link your existing Buddy Lists that Uses Flash to Video chat in a Browser.
    From http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/page5.html#_other
Tokbox allows you to link to existing Buddy Lists.

  • Safari won't work on Macbook; Firefox works just fine

I am connected at home via my cable modem and AirPort Express. Wireless connection is OK. If I open Safari, it will just hang until I eventually get a message telling me that the server is not responding. But when I open Firefox, I can go anywhere on the web (like right here on the Apple discussions page). I've tried emptying the cache, resetting, trashing the history plist... Nothing works. I don't mind Firefox, but I prefer Safari. I have this problem only on my 13" white MacBook. My iMac, no problem

Well, I tried that and it didn't work, unfortunately. Now, here's the kicker: When I am at home (connected via my AirPort Express and cable modem), I can only access the internet via Firefox. Pages will not load in Safari. But when I am at work (connected via an AirPort Extreme and my school's network), pages will ONLY load in Safari and NOT in Firefox. Can ANYONE explain this?

I updated to OS 10.5.1 and now my AOL AIM account on iChat does not work right. It seems like it connects just fine but it doesn't show my buddy list window. I also realized that since I upgraded, my fan has been running at 4000+ rpms and CPU has been running at 40%+. Somebody help.

  • Airport express won't work with Extend Network, only Create Network

My Airport Express when it is setup to extend my network while plugged into Ethernet will Create a network under settings. If I change this to Extend A Network it doesn't work properly. It keeps kicking me on and off WiFi, but the former way works with no foreseen issues. What is going on? I can't extend my guest network with the first option, I don't believe.
I have a 5th Generation AirPort Extreme and a 1st Gen AirPort Express.

My Airport Express when it is setup to extend my network while plugged into Ethernet will Create a network under settings
This is the correct setting to "extend" the network using an Ethernet connection. Technically, this is called a "roaming" network.
If I change this to Extend A Network it doesn't work properly.
This is because "Extend a wireless network" is used only when AirPort devices communicate with each other using wireless only......not Ethernet.
It would help if Apple used settings like "Extend a network using Ethernet" and "Extend a network using wireless only".....but they don't.
The AirPort Extreme will need to be configured as the main router if you want it to provide a Guest Network. It cannot do this if it is configured in Bridge Mode.

  • RealPlayer Safari plugin won't work on Intel core duo iMac 20"

Real Player Safari plug in won't work on Intel coreduo iMac 20" to either listen to audi or to play video and I don't know whether it is a Safari issue, Rosetta issue, RealPlayer issue or all of the above. I am also concerned about asking Safari to run under Rosetta becasue this seems to defeat the point of getting the latest machine. Does anyone know what the problem is and the likely timescales for a fix? Thanks. John
PS. I am able to access the resources I want using stand alone RealPlayer and Firefox.
    2GHz iMacCD 20" 2Gb RAM   Mac OS X (10.4)
1.25GHz iMac flat panel round bottom   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hello, this happens because Power-PC-plugins usually can't cooperate with Intel-coded programs. I've experienced the same mess with the famous GraphicConverter and TWAIN plugins from Epson. Until Real will not offer Universal-coded plugins, you have to use the Rosetta-bridge with PPC program versions. In such case I generally prefer the FireFox browser.

  • IChat won't work on mixed wired/wireless home network

This is probably a stupid obvious question, but I can't figure it out, and it's late.
My wife just got a new Macbook for Christmas. Yay! I still have an old old G4. Boo, and an even older iBook (clamshell). She also got an Airport Express so she can network wirelessly.
Trouble is, it's a network of one. I can't figure out what button to push so that I can get her onto the home network so that, say, we can iChat via bonjour or she can transfer her files off this computer and all that fun stuff.
I know my way around a network pretty well, but wireless is a bit of mystery to me, so any suggestions'll be appreciated.
Merry Boxing day, and good deals.

    Figured it out.
For those of you with the same problem:
Go to Airport Admin Utility. Select Airport device, and click configure.
    Select network.
Uncheck Distribute IP addresses. This forces the network back to the router. With one computer it worked. Can't speak to two, though, but should.

  • Internet won't work unless using network diagnostics, every 5 minutes

    MacBook 2,1 - 10.6.8
In the header I already described my problem and it's a REALLY weird problem.
So if I restart my MacBook I can go browse for about 1-10min, then it just keeps loading and if you wait endless it gives me a network error message. When I use Safari it point you to the "network diagnostics" software, which I found very helpful, because when I just keep pressing next Internet works again all of a sudden?!? BTW the last two indicators are most likely always red or yellow (Internet and Server), everything else is green. It's not a problem with my WIFI either, because I can see other network devices AND … now comes the funny part, IT WORKED BEFORE!!
It always worked flawlessly before, before I made a Backup of my current state (just updated to 10.6.8 and made a Time Machine Backup), because I wanted to make a fresh install. I deleted my partition and tried to install 10.7 from an external HD. The problem is Lion needs at least 2GB of Ram, otherwise it won't let you install it.
OK. So I got my 10.6 image and put It on my external drive again, started it up and made a fresh install.
After the install it asked me if I want to restore anything from a old Mac or a Time Machine backup, which I did (restored everything, from settings to apps). Of course some Apps didn't work like MacAppStore (requires 10.6.8) so I tried to make a software update which was a PAIN IN THE A**, because it always stopped after several minutes but kept trying to download (until several minutes it gave me an connection error). "SOLUTION" using network diagnostics and klick all the way throught and all of a sudden the download continued (if it haven't timed-out already). SO… the problem was there already after the fresh install of 10.6 and continued after install the 10.6.8 Combo and any other update!…
    WHAT THE HECK?!?…
so for the guys who don't want to read throught all my story:
Internet (over Wifi) keeps dropping (every 5 min) until I run network diagnostics every time! (worked before!!)… only after fresh 10.6 install and TM-backup restore.
And NO, I DOUBT that my router is the problem, because it worked before and this problem occurs on all Wifi networks.
Also no settings changed (DHCP as before, IP and everything else are fine).
This problem is REALLY annoying. Thanks for your help!

Not too sure but had a problem like this once, try deleting your current "location" in Network Settings and just make a new one with some new name. ("this ain't Kansas anymore" conclusion: some part of your software, drivers or frameworks suddenly thinks its in some strange environment, "coincidentally" by the same old name, but definitely, now, somewhere else)

  • IChat won't work at home

When I'm at school my iChat works perfectly. However, every time I try to connect at home it either lets me log in yet none of my contacts show up or won't connect at all.
I have iChat 4.0.2, my home connection is high speed wireless while at school I use an ethernet cord. Any ideas?
    In layman's terms please!!

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
When you are at School and look in System Preferences > Network at the settings for Ethernet - how does it say it is getting an IP from the School network ?
When you are at home what does the System Preferences > Network Airport Card > Advanced button > TCP/IP tab say ?
IS system Preferences > Quicktime ? Streaming tab set at 1.5Mbps ?
Are you getting any messages ?

  • IChat won't work in Lion

Trying to fire up iChat in Lion & it won't change my status to Available

Most likely there is a message/dialogue somewhere asking for access to your keychain.
Since Lion is a new 'application' (or iChat to Lion, whatever), the old access right no longer works. Once you have given access to your keychain ('always allow') it should work.
Well...that's how it went on my machine when I had the same problem.
