IChatAgent using 60-70% of CPU

For anyone whom might read this, my machine has had a consistent problem for the months with the iChatAgent process.
Unlike many, many other posts on this forum I am not getting the 'not responding' error. This process is eating my cpu time for lunch. With iChat open the computer is almost unusable with anything more than a browser open.
Machine is fully patched, with the exception that I am still running XCode 1.5 if thats any help.

HI Jeffery,
I would reinstall iChat and the support folders
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=121719
I would install all three parts.

  • Firefox is using large amounts of CPU time and disk access, and I need to know how to shut down most of this so I can actually use the browser.

Firefox is a very busy piece of software. It's using large amounts of CPU time and disk access. It puts my usage at low priority, so I have to wait for some time to be able to use my pointer or keyboard. I don't know what it uses all that CPU and disk access time for, but it's of no use to me. It often takes off with massive use of resources when I'm not doing anything, and I may not have use of my pointer for several minutes. How can I shut down most of this so I can use the browser to get my work done. I just want to use the web site access part of the software, and drop all the extra. I don't want Firefox to be able to recover after a crash. I just want to browse with a minimum of interference from Firefox. I would think that this is the most commonly asked question.

  • While being idle online for a few minutes, why does Firefox start cyclically using 50% to 5% CPU resources, with a 10 to 1, hi to lo ratio

This behavior became apparent after the last couple of Firefox version updates. Current Firefox version is 21.0. My PC is an IBM ThinkCentre running @ 3.0 Ghz Intel CPU with 1.5 Gigs PC3200 DDR ram. With or without any other Windows apps open, whether I'm on line just idling on my home page (Google) or any other web page or entering / receiving data, several minutes into a session, the MS XP pro SP3 task manager shows Firefox cyclically using 50% (and more) CPU resources for 8-10 seconds then 1-5% CPU resources for 1-2 seconds. Closing & restarting Firefox, allows me a few minutes of speedy surfing. My ISP is AT&T 2nd tier DSL with a download thruput of 300 (+) MB (not Mb) / second (altho, most of the time I'm just viewing a web page or idling, without downloading or uploading any data).
What has changed? My PC & all of its software have remained the same with the exception of MS security updates, Adobe Reader updates, & Firefox updates (without adding any additional plug ins, add ons, etc., with each update).
What the...! For the past several minutes that I've been inputting data here, the task manager showed a jump of only 13% cpu usage (ever so briefly) by Firefox & only then when I switched between the task manager & Firefox. Intermittent anomalies are gonna be the death of me...
Well, this is an annoyance, albeit an intermittent one. Ah, I pine for the days when I heard about & believed in "seamless integration"...any thots that might help resolve this issue sure would be appreciated.

  • Premiere cc & media encoder update and it doesn't use anymore 100% of cpu, why?

    hi
i don't like always to update programs
but yesterday i update premiere to version 7.2.2 and adobe media encoder and others , in short i updated everything
well i started to render a video and i noticed that adobe media encoder (during the rendering) did not use all my cpu
in the prev , i used the 90% of my cpu
my cpu it's the last intel 4 core (8 vitual) 4Ghz
but the new verstion uses not more then 50% , don't know how much gpu does it use , can't find a program to monitor under w8.1 pro 64bit
    what's wrong?
is there a way (option) to let media encoder to use all my 100% cpu?
is there a way to check how much gpu does it use?
    thanks

    Hi Thomas,
    Thanks for your reply.
It doesn't appear to be the problem though. The encode I have running at the moment has been going for the last 13 hours and in the last two hasn't once got any further along!
Current elapsed time for a 30 minute film going to MPG2 is 13 hours and 18 minutes! Seems a touch excessive for just muxing!
Any other ideas? Would be really grateful for any advice as Adobe Media Encoder is becoming very unreliable and I have tonnes of encoding to do!
    Many thanks

  • Neither Firefox nor the profile manager will start. In my task manager, the process is using 50% of my cpu but does nothing. I love browsing with firefox, how can I fix this?

I've tried restarting my computer, the I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, then uninstalling, erasing all firefox files and folders, then restarting and reinstalling. I've also tried opening the profile manager to change my profile. After reinstalling a few times and trying to open the profile manager before launching firef0x, I got the firefox has crashed window and the process in the task manager is still using 50% of my cpu. The most recent expunge then re-download pops up a "file is corrupt" error and won't even install the program.

Kill those processes that you are seeing, including any plugincontainer.exe, only once firefox has stopped running should you try to update it.
Totally unexpected instances of firefox running may sometimes be the result of malware activity.

    I use last firefox (32) on MacOS X 10.6.8.
Sometime firefox start using 100% a one CPU, from that time the only way to stop it was to quit (it take severals seconds, sometime it hang). When it start i can close all windows, firefox continue using 100% CPU.
I follow standard instructions (update to lastest, disable plugins and extensions...) it do not work.
I not a configuration to reproduce the problem : keep iCloud mail open in one tab is the way to reproduce the problem sometime after a few minutes, sometime after some hours : but it also happend sometime with no iCloud open...

  • Updated I Web on Leopard - now uses 80-90% of CPU power!

    Hi,
I manage several websites using Iweb every day.  I just updated ("small bug fixes"), and now it's worse than ever, using 80-90% of CPU  in my Activity Monitor without even doing anything in the program, just opening it and letting it sit for a second.
I do have an older Macbook - I have 2 GHz Intel Core Duo and 2GB Ram - but I've been running several applications simultaneously including Iweb with no issues.
Can I downgrade to the old version?  Can Apple warn me when an upgrade may not be compatible with my system?
    Thank you,
    JD

What version of iWeb are you running? What level of Leopard are you at?  After updating did you repair disk permissions with Disk Uitlitiy?
    Try the following:
delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your Home()/Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
    launch iWeb and try again.

  • System Uses 80-90% of cpu on Original Macbook air

I am looking for a solution that reduces the system from using 80% of my cpu. I am getting frustrated

If you are using Mac OS X Lion then I'd suggest to downgrade to Snow Leopard.
Lion is more resource hungry than Snow Leopard, this makes the CPU heat up more.
If the CPU heats up the computer throtles it down to a lower speed for it to cool down. When this happens you'll see your CPU usage go up too, to keep it as simple as I can: imagine you are using 50% capacity at 1.86ghz and the computer throtles down to 0.93ghz, with half the processing speed the laptop would need double the usage to run the same app at the same speed, so it would use 100%. It can even go over 100% if you push it enough.
Sometimes the system will report that it's using 80 or 90% to prevent other apps from stressing the processor and heating it up even further or it will even shut down one of it's cores, a common issue on early 2008 models.
I have a 2009 2.13ghz Macbook Air and after having some performance issues with Lion I reinstalled Snow Leopard, my mac runs much cooler with it and my battery life is one hour longer since it's less stressful on the processor and memory.
You should also google around Coolbook for Snow Leopard, it brings the temperature down and therefore the laptop can run more time at full tilt before it slows the processor down, meaning better performance.
    Just my two cents.

  • How can I get ITunes to stop using 100% of my CPU system resources

When ITunes is up, it uses 100% of my CPU resources, making everything else operate at a snail's pace. I'm not even doing anything with ITunes, but it still seems to hog my machine, a desktop computer running WIndows XP. (When Itunes is closed CPU usage goes down to 4%-25% or thereabouts on average.)
What can I do to stop this? It is very frustrating that Apple would make a program that does this without reason.
    David

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if CPU issue is resolved..
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • Seems Firefox is suddenly using a lot of CPU power

My desktop, recently, started sounding like it was really laboring while I wander around the net. And there's a delay as I type messages like this... the letters show up a second or two behind the keystrokes.
I looked at CPU usage (Win XP with all updates) and while I'm doing this, it sometimes peaks to 35% or higher for Firefox.exe.
My laptop has recently started telling me Firefox is using a lot of memory and I should close and restart Firefox. (Also updated Win XP)
    It's becoming a big PITA...

It didn't show up when i searched for the problem on Google and it didn't show up when i search here on Firefox's support site either.
And the reason it didn't because it's mostly not about my problem.
'''If' it was one of those things then i would have a high CPU usage the minute i opened my browser, but i don't.'''
'''It will use a lot of CPU power (after a couple of hours) even if i don't do anything '''
And yes hardware acceleration is on and so is submit performance data and i use Ad Block Plus, and there isn't a correctly working theme or add-on out there that could use 50-60% of a 3.2GHz quad core CPU
I don't think this is something that can be fixed that easily

  • Scroll is using a lot of CPU

    Hello
In my application I have a general scroll that contains a lot of tables and tabs.
The scroll is working slow and is using a lot of CPU power.
    Table scrolls are working fine.
Could be something wrong in the code?
    Thank you

Of course there could be something wrong in your code. Can you post an SSCCE that reproduces this behaviour?

  • Is Photos using a lot of CPU?

Photos is now using a lot of CPU. This is after it converted my iPhoto library. Is this normal? Is anyone else seeing this on their machine? Here's a screen shot with
Photos hidden (not actively being used).

It's probably still building the library and optimizing. Mine is still way up there as well. I'm going to let it run over night and see where it's at in the morning.

  • Ditto Using A Lot Of CPU?  Fans Run Often

It seems to be the culprit in causing the fans to run fast since installing SL. I stop the process from the Activity Monitor but it starts back. AM shows ditto at 90% when it's running. The fans come on, I stop ditto and they slow down, later the fans come on again, I check and ditto is running again and at 90%...............

Actually resolved this. Related to unzip issue.
Attempting to unzip some files locks up the Archive Utility. Force Quitting the Archive Utility leaves ditto open and using a lot of CPU.
Therefore, I'm using The Unarchiver (as kindly suggested by someone on my unzip problem post) at least until Apple updates the Archive Utility.

  • ITunes Using Up 100% of CPU

For some reason iTunes was using 100% of my CPU, for some reason I thought the iTunes library may have been corrupt, making iTuunes use 100% of my CPU when I started it. So I deleted my .itl file and imported all of my music again, so now all my songs are in iTunes and it seemed to work. Then, as part of my settings, I turned on the souncd check, now iTunes uses 100% of my CPU and doesn't respond when I open it, how can I fix this?

Sorry. I did a search, and a lot of threads came up. The one I chose, I thought, explained WHY it happened.
Maybe you'd get answers more helpful to you, if you went throught the search results.
Sorry I wasn't of any assistance.
