Ichatav 2.1 to AIM- PC

I have a friend who just got a webcam and we have been trying to connect. The camera icon shows up by her name and when I click on it, it sends her a message, she accepts and then I get a message that the video is starting and she gets a connection message. Then I get an unknown error message as does she. Here are the specs on what she is using: Dell Latitude D410 notebook and a Logitech QuickCam for Notebooks Deluxe. I am running AIM and I have the full Norton Internet Security Suite.
She is at a university and has disabled the firewalls on her computer.
Can anyone help us figure out why we can't connect?
Thanks.

Hi Kappa,
Ok, where to start ?
iChat and AIm send the data about the capablilities of your Buddies on the same port you login to the AIM servers with.
iChat and AIM need more ports open to actually AV chat.
iChat needs 5060, 5678, 16384-16403 on the UDP protocol (if the protocol needs to be set in any Firewall/Modem settings).
AIM is a little vague about exactly which ports but one page on their site says to try opening port 1024-5000 on any modem.
OF course the AIM end runing on XP needs "tuning" to the camera and Mic and Enabling through the XP firewall, particularly if it has Service Pack 2 installed.
The access to the "Tuning" is through the Applications properties. These are found in the MY AIM menu of the Buddy list and then Options > Properties. Other than the access the instructions are the same as the link.
It seems to work better if the XP firewall is engaged and the AIM Application listed as an Exception as per the link's instructions.
The next problem is the Univeristy's set up.
Do you know if this is allowing her to AV chat to other Buddies ?
Can she reach the test accounts ?
Try these http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/ContactTesters.html
(tryicatav is no longer on-line or rather has not been so for some time)
Are you using AIM for Mac as this does not Do AV chats ?
Or do you mean you are using an AIM name ?

  • Proxy iChat???

So here's the deal. A particular firewall that one of my computers is sitting behind doesn't like SIP and some other traffic, so I can't do iChatAV from there, only AIM/jabber text IM stuff. I want to be able to do AV stuff on iChatAV from this computer. (The only way I can do iChatAV now is to unplug from the RJ-45 jack and hook up my cell phone via USB and do a PPP dialup over cellphone into my cellular provider's 1XRTT network).
iChatAV does allow proxy server settings, and I can ssh to my home computer (from where I have no problems doing iChatAV), tunneling several other services like afp and vnc, from this particular computer behind the uncooperative firewall. So, I thought that maybe I could use my home computer as a proxy by, when setting up the ssh session, adding a "-D 1080" option to my ssh directive (man ssh says that ssh -D will act as a socks server), and specifying my home computer's/network's host name (and port 1080) as the socks5 proxy in the computer's (behind the uncooperative firewall) iChatAV's preferences.
Wrong! iChatAV just stalls -- doesn't even connect to oscar.aol.com to announce my presence, much less allow me to text IM anybody. So, might anybody out there have a clue as to what I'm doing wrong and/or not doing right, coz' obviously I don't! Maybe? Maybe? What should I be doing in order to proxy iChatAV through my home computer via an ssh connection?
    TIA

Hi Ralph! Does the iChat forum know you're out frequenting other forums? Hmmmm?
Anyways, I've done that in iChat, trying servers localhost and 127.0.0.1 with both socks4 and socks5 on port 1080, and no username or password.
Then, before actually launching iChat, I start up a ssh session to my home computer. I have ssh configured for passwordless public key exchange login, and in my ssh login command, in addition to afp, imap/smtp, and vnc port tunneling directives, I added a "-D 1080" proxy tunneling directive. And yes, I remembered to open port 1080 in my Mac's firewall, so just like the other services I am running off the home computer, the tunneled traffic could get to the appropriate service.
man ssh shows that ssh supports socks4 or socks5 proxy server (-D option) and it says it will act as a socks server, too. So I'm befuddled....

  • Mixed resukts with AIM

I am trying to set up video chat with two PC users
One has an AOL account and if he intiates a video chat we connect fine, but if I ask for a video chat then he gets a message "behind different firewalls" and I get a failed to respond message with me as the failure.
The other user can't get a video chat either way with alternate messages of either of us failing to respond.
I have a friend on a Mac and we can talk/view fine.
So can I assume that my setup is OK
Is it all down to the pc users?
I have enabled ports in OSX firewalls and allowed all UDP and TCP in my router.
Aim 5.9 on other PC I believe I can vouch for one but not the other.
    Any ideas?
    Many thanks

    Hi David:
You mention that if you initate the conference to the windows user that you get the failed to repond. That is likely a cause of the router or firewall settings on the windows machine, thus not being able to connect.
Check out this sight: http://www.mvldesign.com/videoconferencetutorial.html for some great tips for windows users (it's towards the bottom)
As far as the other user, you need to confirm he has AIM 5.9, not tritan as tritan is not capable of doing video as of yet with iChatAV. AIM 5.9 can be found at: http://www.aim.com/getaim/win/otherwin.adp?aolp=
I'd also recommend having the windows user connect to a Mac user that has a known configuration that works with both. I know mine does, so feel free to contact me at my AIM screen name (same as on here), just introduce yourself via chat first and I'll be happy to help.
    Best of luck!

  • AIM PC to iChat MAC help please

I am visiting my sister in N.C. She has a PC. I have a MAC. I brought my MAC with me. I can video chat MAC to MAC through her Earthlink Cable modem but cannot get her PC to chat with a MAC. I have read through most of the documents contained in the forum and still cannot connect a video chat with AIM on the PC.
I was getting "did not respond" messages but now can't even text chat with anyone If I double click on my buddie from the list AIM crashes. Before AIM crashes I get an message: Error signature:
    AppName: aim.exe AppVer: 5.9.3861.0 ModName: msvcr71.dll
    ModVer: 7.10.3052.4 Offset: 00010428
I can text chat if I type in their user name then hit send.
This is what is going on with the PC:
AIM triton uninstalled then installed AIM 5.9
Tuned camera which is a Logitech pro 5000
Service Pack 2 set to "any"
the only thing I haven't done that the instructions suggest is download the "extra" video file. The link takes me to a blank AIM page.

I'm not sure I can offer much help other than to say I'm not surprised at the fact you can easily connect from Mac to Mac and not always from Mac to PC.
If it were me, I think I'd try tossing ichat pref's to the trash first and then try to connect again. Do a search on your hard drive for:
    com.apple.iChat.plist
then drag and drop these preferences to the trash. Your app will create a new default set of preferences for ichatav that may work better for you.
In addition I think apple is aware of this ongoing issue but to date there has not been an overall solution to this problem. May have more to do with AIM than with apple's ichatav (or perhaps both).
Ralph Johns might have more to add here since he's our resident expert on such issues.
    Ralph are you out there?
Btw .... it's been a while since I posted here on a regular basis. But I have noticed several changes to this forum in terms of format and lost / missing posts. I'm still a bit curious when apple will restore my 8000+ posts (if ever). I'm assuming we're going to have to give this up to "Lost Posts Heaven" for the time being ....

  • Y sister has asked me to help her set up iChatAV on her nre

My sister has asked me to help her setup iChatAV on her new iMac w/Leopard. I don't use either one so I need some help. As I understand it, she will either have to join .Mac @$99/year or get an AIM account. Since AIM is free, we'll probably go that route. Unfortunately, I heard that the last version of AIM for Macintosh (4.7) does not support AV, while the Windows version (6.5) does. Is this correct? If so, we'll have to go the $99/year .Mac route, but I don't think it is worth it.

Just to be clear. The ONLY thing you want from AIM is a Screen Name. You *DO NOT* install AOL's AIM client. iChat allows you to use an AIM screen name.
I use an AIM Screen Name, my Mom and my Brother use AIM Screen Names. I do text, audio, and video chats with my Mom and Brother via iChat.
iChat will also work with Jabber based instant messaging services, such as Google Talk (aka gTalk).
In addition iChat can do text chats with any other client on any other operating system as long as they are using the same same service that your Sister is using (AIM, .mac, Jabber).

  • Could not connect to AIM

    Hi everybody,
I have been having a problem connecting to the AIM server for iChatAV for the past few days, and have read through the various discussion forums but I still cannot solve the problem. The full error is "Could not connect to AIM: The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost."
I have tried to change the firewall settings on the Netgear router, I have tried to connect directly using the Motorola modem, still nothing.
I also have my laptop with ichat installed which worked a couple of weeks back...this also fails, so this leads me to believe that it may be a network configuration problem that I have. The ISP assures me that this is not the case, and the Apple helpdesk are also stumped. Any ideas?

    Hi,
Apparently there has been a problem with .mac accounts and the link to the AIM Servers. This has caused some people problems with logging on to the AIM network.
One though occures to me at this stage. Does the password for your .mac account have more than 16 characters ?
If it does reduce to it to at the most 16. .mac can have over 20 characters to the password but AIM only allows 16 Max.
If this is not the problem go here http://www.apple.com/support/dotmac/ and report the problem.

    Hi Juneappal,
It doesn't work if the firewall is on with an iChatAV port (Name: Other) allowing TCP and UDP on 5060, 5190, 5297, 5298, and 5678
This misses some ports as well
TCP 5190 to log on to AIM
UDP 5190 to do certian text chats and send files and pics
UDP 5678 to send and recieve invite (A/V)
UDP 5060 to process those invites
UDP 16384-16403 to actually have the A/V chats.
TCP 5220, 5222, 5223 to do the Jabber stuff
    TCP 5298 for Bnjour
    UDP 5298 ditto
    UDP 5297 and 5353 for Bonjour A/V cg=hats through a routing device.
Agree with the Quicktime setting that Defcom mentions

  • My brother can see and hear me (AIM), I cannot see or hear him (iChat).

So I had a post a few days ago about the communication issues with iChat to AIM. Got a great response and info from Rj in WI (thanks a bunch) but still having problems. The other day my brother and I were able to establish an audio connection but not video. He downloaded the latest version of AIM (5.9, not sure if it is the Triton version) Now he can SEE and HEAR me, but all I see and hear is myself. Regardless if I invite him or he invites me same thing. I have a wireless connection, he is hard wired. Anyone have any pointers or had this issue. The solution might have already been pointed out to me but I have not been successful. Seriously entertaining the idea of Sightspeed but I have iChat and want to use it for what it was created for.

I occassionaly will have the same issue connecting to fellow mac users. Usually quitting iChat and restarting, then re-initating the conference will solve the issue.
He should be using AIM 5.9, Tritan currently does not support iChatAV.
I have a wireless connection and don't use Sightspeed and don't have any issues.
Are you able to successfully conduct 2 way video chats to fellow mac users that don't have any connection problems?
Lastly, I'd be willing to test with the PC user, just let me know!
Let us know how it goes.

hey my AIM always crashes. i deleted it and reinstalled it but no luck. anyone know how to fix or solve this problem, please let me know, thanks

    Hi,
If you mean as in iChat the iChatAV 3 forum would be the place to post this question, the amazingly knowledgeable helpers there can help you sort it out, imho. I presume Safari does not crash, correct ?
    Good luck.

  • AIM icon in dock pixelated when using iChat?

I use iChat instead of AIM for its ease of use and design. However, the little AIM icon "running guy" in my dock gets pixelated when I drag my mouse over it. I have my dock magnification on.
No other program does this except AIM. The iChat icon is fine and magnifies perfectly, it's just the little running guy. The image is of poor quality I guess but it's weird that it's only that icon.
Anyone who why other than it's a low quality image?
Macbook, iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

AIM (not iChatAV) hasn't been updated for quite awhile. I'm not sure if that is the issue, but may be related.
iChatAV is the preferred messagner application and the most recent updated.

  • No audio and video with iChatAV connecting to one computer

Hi all, very strange issue here. Have two new alu iMacs, one 2.4 24" and one 2.0 20". Set them up at home and everything worked fine. Set up two seperate AIM accounts and got audio and video iChat working with no problems at all. Got it to work between my two computers and with another one. I then moved my 20" iMac to my office. I am now only able to send text messages, no audio and video with iChat any more. Get message that account doesn't answer. Of course we accept and everything. The strange thing is that both my computers do get audio and video working connecting to my friend's iMac with iChatAV only not when connecting to eachother. When we tried to make a converence call, my friend had to invite us and then my home computer could see and hear me at the office and my friend, while my friend and I could see and hear eachother, but only could hear my home computer. What could be wrong here?

Can you mark the thread as Answered then please.

I was attempting to use the aim sytem and ichat for the first time and after opening and closing it several times I now cant get in? Yes, there is a time out for too many connections within a certain period of time. This it to try to avoid spimmers. Usually the connection will reset after 10 min or so. Try shutting down iChatAV and restarting it.

  • Are the AIM servers screwy tonight?

I am unable to login to AIM on my PC or iChatAV or AIM on my Mac: "iChat can't communicate wit the AIM account" "Error: Auth:ResvLinkError" I can log into my AOL via the web (aol.com) but the web based AIM will not engage
I was signed on fine earlier without any issues. I have had the same handle and password for at least a decade. Any ideas as to what may be going on?

    Hi Theo,
I am not seeing any issues with my logins using two AIM Names and an @mac.com one.
You suggest the computer has not been Off or if it has it has only been for a relatively short period.
This would suggest that the IP of the computer is unlikely to have changed (this could be an issue if you use Port Forwarding and the routing device still does DHCP)
I take it AIM Express is also a non functioning option ? (web based AIM)

  • AIm not connecting

I have an issue with loggin on to AOL IM when I am at home I Have a Netgear wpn824v2. i cannot access AIM though iChatAV it works when I am at school. Any help would be wonderful.

Try using port 443 under the iChat>Preferences>Accounts>Server Settings.
That may clear up your problem.
You may also need to open the proper ports in your router. This may help: http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page3.html

  • Cannot send email from aim account

From a quick internet search, it appears I'm not the only one with this particular problem. When I try to send mail from my iPhone from my Aim mail account, the "from" name shows my aim ID with an extension of "@[email protected]". Clearly, with this double domain, the outbound mail cannot go through. I cannot edit that From address anywhere that I can find in order to fix the problem. I've deleted the email account from my phone and re-added it, but the problem continues. Any advice?

Here's the response I received from Yahoo following the link you posted. As usual, nothing that moves the problem closer to a solution. First, there is an attempt at deflecting the problem by pointing out all the other great services Yahoo offers. Note the operative word "some". That's the whole reason I am writing the note. I already know that "some" of the services are working. I'm wondering about the one that doesn't so this doesn't help. Next comes pass the buck. Go talk to Apple about it. No comment on that one, it speaks for itself. And finally, if none of that works please give me more information. I'll call that reflection. So now its back to me.
