ICloud backup iOS 8.1 - failing to backup

Since updating iOS to 8.1 yesterday, my iPhone 6 and my iPad retina mini are both failing to make iCloud backups. Either manually or automatically when powered and idle. I have loads of space on iCloud so that is not the issue. Tried deleting existing iCloud backups, tried logging in and out of iCloud account, restarting devices etc. Still not working 12 hours later. Anyone else?

There is a bug with 8.1 and I think I know what it is. Something in iOS 8.1 is double counting your space each time you try to backup, including the backup that hasn't yet occurred. Either that, or it is a bug/ploy from Apple to make a lot of people buy storage upgrades so we can backup.
For example, I have two devices backed up using 4.5GB of space, an iPad at 1.2GB and an iPhone 6 at 3.3GB. It said the size of my next backup for my iPhone6 is 3.3GB (no bigger than my prior backup). It says in Settings/iCloud/Manage Storage that I need an additional 2.8GB of space to do my backup, that I only have 458MB of space and is offering for me to upgrade my storage plan. What that means is that my next backup is not taking into account that most of the data in the prior backups is the same data.
So here's the additional bug - as a workaround I tried deleting my last backup and turning off iCloud backups on my iPhone. I then turned back on my iCloud backup again and it shows my current backup as 3.3GB (but not completed), and says I need an additional 2.8GB in order for it to backup and to upgrade my plan. It's counting my backup that I haven't been able to complete as used storage and still shows I only have 458MB available. This all started with iOS 8.1 after i installed it last night and my backups just started failing.
Based on these calculations, on iOS 8.1 if you have only one device (total) with more than 2.5GB backing up, you will never be able to use the 5GB free storage. You have to have enough space for your prior backup (including the one you're trying to do), and an entirely new backup on top of that. The extra fun bug is that it's even counting your current incomplete backup as already used iCloud space.

  • Backup 3.1.2 Fails To Backup

I have seen others posting same issues.  Just wanted to post that I am having the same issue and am anxious to find a solution.  That is....
Just upgraded to Leopard on dual G5 2.0Ghz.  Ran software update without any updates. (I'm all up to date)  Ran Backup plan for an external drive to another external drive - no issues.  Tried to run plan that backups my home folder and also app setting, mail, etc.  Fails every time.  I deleted the plan and created a new one and it fails as well.
Until I hear of an upgrade solution or suggestion I will just drag and drop my entire home folder to an external for the time being.  Or perhaps I will explore Time Machine and see if it will backup all I need as effectively as Backup.

I'm also having problems with Backup 3.1.2 + Leopard and unfortunately can't use Time Machine as don't have an external hard drive.
My backup used to work fine before Leopard, but now uploads and then fails with the following message appearing in Console:
The catalog for the backup could not be added to the backup library.
    End backup at 2008-04-27 13:28:23.141 +0100
Any help would be appreciated because like everyone else I'm now paying £79 just for my e-mail address!

I am working on a Win 7 Machine and I have disabled all Firewall and Antivirus Tasks as this caused problems on an other update.

Well - I synced before - that was successful - but I am a bit scared to ignore this error and just to continue? You think I should ignore that?

Well, first off, you are not addressing Apple here. This is a user to user PUBLIC forum. You should not post your personal information like that. Try closing iTunes, reboot the computer and connect again. Are you using the latest version of iTunes, v11.1?

My 3gs wont restore after ios 5 update. I have tried firmware restore and restore from backup, neither works. All I get is "iphone restore failed because backup session failed" Any ideas on how to make a successful restore with this ios 5 update?

I was having the same problem, I backed up my phone and then updated to iOS 5 and then it kept telling me it could not restore from my backup as it had failed.  After reading a bunch of forums and posts and trying everything, I did manage to get it to work.  I had tried the Time zone, creating a new computer user account, disabling anti-virus, etc.
It took a combination of things, one of which was disabling the anti-virus completely and copying the contents of the backup folder to my desktop and then deleting everything in the backup folder.  Then I rebooted the PC, entirely disabled the anti-virus, copied the one backup I wanted to restore from the desktop to the backup folder and then trying to restore.  Low and behold the phone said restoring from backup and I am back in business, so when in doubt, trying combining some of the fixes together.

  • IOS iphone 3GS update - sync/backup/update fail fix for frozen Iphone

    Hi
downloaded new itunes 9.2, updated iPhone software.
Result: perma fail of apple logo with empty sync bar, nothing goes.
    Fix:
essentially you need to to go and restore to factory setting twice with a step of restoring an old iPhone back up and after repeating the same procedure restoring to your latest back-up.
how to fix it step by step:
    - disconnect iPhone from computer
    - relaunch iPhone by holding down power & home button
    - close and restart itunes
    - reconnect iPhone
    - watch closely when iPhone reappears, click immediately on restore (before it starts another freezing sync/back up session)
    - restore factory settings
    - when asked if you want to back up first, click yes
    - when asked if you want to restore from backup after the factory settings restore - DO NOT CHOOSE the latest backup, restore from old pre-upgrade backup, even if its a year old (you will later do another restore, and than choose your latest back-up)
    - restore iPhone successfully, turn on, use
    - go back to itunes, connect iPhone again, click restore to factory settings again
    - do NOT back up this time
    - after restore, now use latest back up from before the restore to rebuild
result: all pictures, email settings, apps are back as they were pre-perma-freeze fail.

Read the above post but having difficulty - how to fix it step by step:
    disconnect iPhone from computer
relaunch iPhone by holding down power & home button
    close and restart itunes
    reconnect iPhone
watch closely when iPhone reappears, click immediately on restore (before it starts another freezing sync/back up session)
    restore factory settings
I can get this far but do not get this option! - when asked if you want to back up first, click yes
ONly get one type of restore option! Any ideas

  • ICloud Error: There was a problem completing backup. Try again Later.

I have my iOS5 installed and everything is working correctly except for iCloud.  For some reason I cannot backup to it.  My sister and I are both on my apple id account and hers works fine, but mine doesnt. It says the next backup will be 0Bytes; to me that doesnt make any sense.  I have tried switching it on my computer to make from back up on this computer to back up on iCloud.  But I havent been able to fix it yet.  Can anyone help me???

1 ipod touch has this error.  Another one will backup but shows the date as unknown.  An iPad works fine.  I can't believe it is a server error.  I can run the iPad backup at the same time as the others and it works.  Also I restored the touches to factory and the backups still failed.  Swapped AppleID's and the errors followed the Id's.   I wish there was a way to validate that the backups were good on the web side.  In the manage storage on the one that fails completely, it show there is a backup with a size  and allows you to turn off the apps that are backed up but I know it has never completed successfully.  Even iTunes updates the date of the backup in the summary panel even though it has failed.  This feedback in iTunes Summary and the Manage panel on the device could give a false sense of security.   This needs some fixing from Apple.  At least iTunes backups are working as I have restored aa few times now under iOS 5/iTunes 10.5.

  • Fail to backup iphone

    my ios is 4.1, iphone.
My Windows PC was down and I purchased new PC with new installed iTunes.
fail to upgrade to the latest ios via iTune now
fail to backup iphone at iTune

    I figured it out.
I didn't have Apps in iTunes at all.
I needed to move apps from phone to iTunes which I finally figured out.
Once I did that I was able to sync the apps to new phone.
instructions on doing this via this chat need to be clearer.
I'm not an Apple super user and I didn't know I needed to move the apps. I thought hitting sync would work. That only works to move apps from iTunes to device.  At least that's the way it seems.

First check that your device is correctly connected to the wifi/internet (settings > wifi)
If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.
If this doesn't help, try turning off some items for back up in a pattern to try to establish if your problem is being caused by specific data on your device.
Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

  • Local backup was made without "Encrypt Local Backup" checked before upgrading to iOS 7 but I can't restore because a password is requested to restore it. What do I do?

I hadn't yet upgraded to iOS7 from iOS6 on my iPad so I clicked "Manual Backup" [To this computer] and "Encrypt Local Backup" was not checked.
The backup seemed to complete without error or incident.
I then went through the iOS 7 upgrade and when it was completed the options are "Set up as new device" or "Restore from Backup"
Since I didn't want to wipe all the data on my iPad, I chose restore, and it said connect to iTunes, which I did.
When I click on Restore Backup, it asks for me to choose which backup I want. I choose the last one that I had just done as indicated above (which is the default).
It then gives me a dialog of "Enter the password to unlock your iPad backup. I even tried every password I've used in the last two years. Nothing works. What I don't understand is why it's asking for a password at all?
Is there a way around this? I don't want to loose the data I just backup up.

Sorry there is no way around this.
If you don't know the password you will need to restore as new.
Then you can sync apps/music back via itunes.

The phone will automatically re-appear when it connects to the Internet. However, don't get your hopes up, as thieves know this & will make sure your phone never re-connects so you can locate it.
