ICloud Backup taking up a huge amount of space

I have an iPhone 4 and an iPad 1, and I had Mobile Me,, so I have 25GB of iCloud storage, but my current Storage is syaing it is taking up 9.99 GB of 25 GB, 9.1 for my iPad 1 and 5.9 for my iPhone. Now I have a lot of books and PDF's on my iPad, but not nearly that many, and my iPhone has next to nothing but apps on it. And both iOS devices say that the backup is incomplete. Does that mean it will get bigger?

  • What does "other" mean at the bottom of the sync page? It is taking up a large amount of space on my phone.

What does "other" mean at the bottom of the sync page? It is taking up a large amount of space on my phone.

The other section contains temporary files, such as text messages, iMessages, voicemail, and other storage that is meant for small short term use.  If the other section of your phone has grown quite large and you can't account for what it could be then you may have experienced a syncing error to iTunes.
I have experienced this problem frequently during my years with the iPhone.  The other portion of my phone grows with every sync of my phone to iTunes.  There comes a point where it takes up the majority of the space on my iPhone, making the device near unusable.
When it grows to this extent is usually cased by an error during the syncing process.  Any information iTunes can't reconcile during the syncing process is saved out of sight, out of mind, in the 'other' section.
You will never be able to see or recover this section unless you are very savvy and know how to poke around the archived iPhone back-up on your computer.  (if you are thinking of trying, stop.  It will not be worth your time and effort, or if using third party software, the money or spyware associated with it *cough* iTools *cough*).
The only fix I have found that works is to back up your phone to iTunes, and preform a 'restore'.  This erases the content of your phone, and restores it to factory settings.
That is you phone will be as if you took it fresh out of the box.  You can preform a restore from back-up through iTune, or iCloud to get your content back.
Lo and behold your have trimmed the mystery meat.

  • I have an iNano, 16 gb,  and loading music with the image of the album cover seems to take a huge amount of space.  When one buys music via iTunes, is there a way to not have the album cover image,  or how do you load music with no album image...?  Grizzw

Is there a way to download music bought on iTunes and not have it include the  Album image.  Seems the images take up a huge amount of space on my iNano.   OR,  is there a way to  load it onto my  iNano,  just the music,  and not the image...?

  • Thumbnails taking huge amount of space?

I'm considering migrating my iPhoto library to Aperture, and the one thing that is concerning me the most is the amount of space it takes, particularly thumbnails.
The previews don't seem to be taking that much, but thumbnails do. I haven't done any too-extensive tests but from what I see, the "AP.*" files inside an ".approject" seem to be huge.
eg: one project that has 11MB worth of photos has:
    - 27MB AP.Thumbnails file
    - 6MB AP.Minis file
This means that these "thumbnails" are actually over 3 times the size of the actual pictures :O Now I have 3MP JPEGs in those folders and I'm sure the ratio between thumbs and RAWs for instance is much lower, but still this is a significant chunk of space :/
In comparison an entire iPhoto library of mine is 6GB and the thumbnails in it take up 250MB.
Is there anything that can be done about this? thx

  • Icloud backup taking too long

my iphone 4 has been on "icloud backup" for the past 24 hours. I can't use my phone nor interrupt the back up. How can I get out of this?

How long it takes to restore from an iCloud backup will depend on how much "stuff" you have to restore and how fast (or slow) your Internet connection is.
If you still have the 4S and it hasn't been wiped, it might be more effective to back it up to your computer using iTunes and restore the 5s from that instead.

  • Why is my first icloud backup taking FOREVER?!?!

Why is my first icloud back up taking 49 hours? It is plugged in, on wifi and lock screen is on. I have pretty much unchecked every app but my contacts, photos, calendar etc.
    What gives?

How time machine works is that it makes an initial back up and from there it scans your system for changes.  When it finds a change it adds the changes on top of your current backup. So if you have a folder full of pictures then rename them or change them, etc it'll resave/archive the pictures ontop of what it already backed up.  It doesn't keep a single "state" of backup.  This allows you to "look back in time" and see if you can find something you might have accidentally changed or deleted or etc.  Once the disk becomes full it will delete the oldest backups to keep archiving newer files.
I would suggest that you partition your external drive to a size that allows you to keep free the desired extra storage space you're looking to use.  For example partition the drive to two 500GB partitions one for storage one for time machine.

  • Icloud backup taking 30-50 hours? 7.9 gb of storage. why so long, just me?

Since updating yesterday i havent been able to backup to icloud. every time i try it just takes forever and never seems to get anywhere. it starts saying around 30 hours and ive seen it go up past 50 hours remaining. this cant possibly be normal. i purchased the extra 10gb for $20 and cant figure out how to get it to work. any advice would be greatly appreciated!!! thanks

i transferred most videos and a bunch of pics to my computer and deleted them from the phone. After shrinking the backup size considerably i actually got it to work. now when i try and backup it works much much faster because its not trying to do all of it at once. idk if im right in why it works now, but it does. try clearing some of your media to get the initial backup done, then you can always add back anything u want.

  • Why is iCloud backup taking so long?

My iPhone 4s on latest iOS prompted me to create a backup as it's been 2 weeks or something. I started the backup 9 hours ago and it still claims it's going to take 4 hours.
Wifi is connected the auto lock is turned off nothing else going.
Any clues as to what's going on?
    Cheers
    Ed

It's hard to say what's causing.  It does sound excessive but backup times depend on how much is being backed up, the upload speed of your internet connection and how busy the servers are.  Also, the backup time estimate can at times be way off so it might not take as long as the estimate indicates.  After the initial full backup, subsequent backups are much faster as they only back up changed files.  This often only takes several minutes or less.

  • Firefox keeps taking up a huge amount of memory, slowing my whole Mac down a lot. Apple can't seem to help. Is there some sort of patch to fix this?

If I don't keep closing down Firefox, when I check in the Activity Monitor it sometimes takes up more than a gig of memory, but I'm not doing anything that should take that much. Please can anyone help? It slows my whole system down, giving me that annoying beach ball all the time.

  • Some how every image and movie is has an identical copy, taking up huge amounts of space how can I get rid of the copies?

  • Itunes took up a huge amount of space when restoring iphone.

I updated itunes recently and it deleted all of my music.  So I had to spend quite a while redoing all of my playlists and music.  To get all of this back on my phone I had to delete everything currently on my iphone.  After I did this it freed up 12 gb of space.  But when I tried to fill that space back up with my music and new playlists it told me that it couldn't because I had synced my phone with another computer, which I had never done.  It then decided to fill that free space up with "other".  So I had to then delete everything on my phone and restore from a backup.
After I deleted everything and went to restore it it told me I didn't have enough space on my computer.  When I looked to see how much free space I had available I was shocked to see that I only had 14mb free.  I'm not sure of the exact space I had left prior to trying the restore but it was at least 10gb.  So I deleted a bunch of stuff I had backed up to give me about 6gb of free space.  I tried the restore again only to get the same message.  This time I had 1mb free on my computer.  So I deleted 28gb of video files.  This time it went forward with the restore but afterwards I had only 18gb of space free on my computer.  The bottom line is that these restores filled my computer up with probably 25-30gb of space and I can not find where these huge backups are stored.
I tried deleting the old backups through the itunes preferences sections, but it only freed up less than a gigabyte.  I did some googling and people are saying they are stored (on windows) in Username>AppData>Roaming>Apple Computer>MobileSync>Backup.  But I don't seem to have that option on my computer.
I need to free this space back up and I am completely lost and pretty annoyed with itunes.  Any help would more appreciated than you know.

  • Time Machine backup not a large as amount of space used on harddrive

I just bought a new iMAC and Time Capsule and completed my first backup. In Disk Utility it shows that there is 151 GB of space used on the hard drive. The space used on the Time Capsule is 131 GB. I searched this topic and can't find it addressed before. Did Time Capsule not back up all the Hard Drive?
    Thanks,
    Carl

    Pondini,
Thank you for your prompt response. My hard drive and Time Capsule drive both show that 150 GB are used so I guess that is settled. When the Time Capsule changed I don't know. In regard to the Time Machine Buddy, I followed the instructions. To copy I pressed the C key, the M key, and the D key then pressed the C key again. It works a lot better to use the CMD key C approach.

  • IOS 5 bug - album artwork takes huge amounts of space

I've upgraded both my iPhone 4 and my iPad 1 to iOS 5.
Under iOS 4, the "Other" data reported by iTunes on these devices wasn't significant.
Under iOS 5, both report over 1.5GB for "Other". By browsing around the phone with iExplorer, it seems that most of this is an enormous album art database file called MediaLibrary-artwork.data in the iTunes_Control\iTunes folder - this alone is over 1.5GB. There are no more than 200 albums on either device, all of which have artwork downloaded from the Apple Store rather than embedded in the files - say 200 x 250kb JPEGs; 50MB in total.
Why is this file so huge under iOS 5? It wasn't under iOS 4 - it's wasting 5% of the space on my 32GB iPhone!
I've tried removing music and movies, deleting the iTunes_Control folder and resyncing - all this does is to shrink the file down from 1.5GB to 875MB - still orders of magnitude bigger than it needs to be.
    Something is broken here, Apple...

I cannot really see this on my iPhone but this could be an explanation for many users seeing coverflow being sluggish (too much RAM taken up by the huge album artwork).

  • Huge amounts of space

When I click on my library within iPhoto, it says I have something like 1.8 gigs worth of pictures. But when I use Finder to "get info" on the iPhoto library in my user folder, it shows 7.47 gigs. Why the difference?

Ah ha, the infamous caches. Here are a couple of things you can do to regain some additional real estate on your HD.
1 - run either Cache Out, OnyX or Mac Sweeper to clean out the various cache and archived log files.
2 - run DeLocalizer to remove the unneeded language modules. I saved 900+MB the first time I ran it. It will run under Panther.
    Good luck.
