Hi, El P.
You wrote: "I am thinking this is a minimal way to save my important data and be able to re-boot if I have an issue with the hard drive. Any thoughts? El P"Well, if your hard drive fails, you're not going to be able to re-boot. If that's a risk you're prepared to live with, then what you're doing is adequate, but minimal.
FireWire drives are available at far more reasonable prices than $200. For example, OWC's Neptune series starts at $93.99 plus shipping. Their drives include Retrospect Express, the OEM version of the Backup and Recovery solution I use. Therefore, it also provides you with all the software you need to create a bootable backup on the FireWire drive. I've bought all of our FireWire drives from OWC.
Assuming you have a problem that requires wiping the drive to correct, one could still spend many hours reinstalling the OS, your third-party applications, and your data. Having a bootable backup makes that process far faster and less painful.
So, while what you're doing may be minimally adequate, I'd recommend looking into a FireWire-based bootable backup and recovery approach at some point when funds permit.
Good luck!

  • HT4847 iCloud back up deletion issue

I need to delete a back uplifted upgrading my phone, but when I try my phone says it cannot be deleted-what can I do, as it is stopping my new phone from backing up.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Update the phones operating system before restoring.
Settings > General > Software Update, then.....
Settings > General > Reset > Erase all contents and settings on the device you want to restore.
When this completes and the Set-Up Assistant starts, choose "Restore from iCloud Backup" and enter your iCloud account and password. You will see the three most recent backups for each of the devices on which you enabled Backup. Choose which backup to restore from.

  • Got Firefox Sync but lost my Key how can i get my data back without delete everything ?

My computer was deleted, i don't have any others devices ? How can i get back my information.
Apparently, there is no solution, this is shame. Why in my account i can't get back my key https://account.services.mozilla.com/ ? This service is useless if when we have a problem (all devices stolen for example) we can't get back any information...
I'm really disappointed, and so are others people as far as i can see. I have to start from the beginning all my bookmarks, so i will use Chrome from now. Thanks a lot Mozilla.

Sorry, but you're using Sync incorrectly if you don't have any other devices connected to that Sync account.
Sync wasn't intended to be a "cloud" storage device; it's intended to be used to "synchronize" a user's across multiple devices. Upon completion of the initial setup of Sync procedure, the user is shown the Recovery Key and is told to make a copy of that "key". There are buttons in the dialog window to "save" to disk or to "print" the Recovery Key. Unfortunately, too many users just ignored that message (or ignored it) and put themselves in the same position that you are now in - lost data and no way to recover that data.
The Sync / Recovery Key is used to encrypt your data as it is being uploaded to the Sync server and then used to decrypt your data when it is downloaded to one of your devices. Without the exact Sync Key that the user's data was encrypted with, the user's data is useless scrambled bunch of 1's and zero's.
Firefox 29 has a new version of Sync that eliminates the need for the user knowing their Recovery Key. The method that generates that "key" uses the user account name (email address) and the user password, so in the future user's shouldn't find themselves in the same position that you are now in.
''IMO, Mozilla provided too much security by having that 3rd security "key" (the Recovery Key), considering how many user's aren't using Sync as it was intended to be used.''

  • Ability to view icloud data/Reprocussions of deleting icloud account?

I have been an icloud user since the beta was released and I have only been uploading my contacts, calenders, reminders, bookmarks, and documents and data to the icloud. I don't have that much content within any of those catagories to use up a lot of the storage space on the icloud server, but for some reason out of the 5 GBs provided I only have 1.9 GBs remaining. Is there a way I can view what content is within my icloud? I've been thinking the best way to make sure I am using the right amount of space is by deleting my icloud account and re-uploading my content to the icloud. What are the reprocussions of deleting my icloud account? I am receiving messages that it would also be removed from my iphone which I definitely want to avoid. Please help!!!

You can try to run a recovery program (recuva, or the like) but that is a slim chance. Otherwise, you can't get that data back after deleting it.

  • ICloud storage full on iphone, but deleted almost everything and grows larger!  iPad is fine with same iCloud acct.  can I delete iPhone backup then turn it back on without loosing iCloud data?

Icloud storage full.  Can I delete my iPhone icloud backup with keeping my iCloud data unharmed (since my iPad has iCloud storage turned on, and I wouldn't be turning iCloud off on my iPad). BTW, I use iTunes for music and photo albums; iCloud for contacts, notes, etc. Then turn iCloud back up back on on iphone to see if I had a problem file and the storage changes?
ICloud storage full.  I deleted messages, moved the camera roll to my PC, deleted Safari bookmarks, turned off almost every app in Managing  iCloud storage.  I turned off the backup, restarted iCloud backup and did a manual backup yet my storage gets larger yet.
Makes no sense.  I have a iPhone and iPad. It's the iPhone showing this large iCloud storage  3.6 GB (when the iPad has more apps and only 716MB).

ANSWER to my Question above:  YES.
I took a chance, as I could find NO information regarding my question, and DELETED MY ICLOUD BACKUP (not my ICLOUD account).  I then turned ON my ICLOUD BACKUP and whew!  It plummeted from 4.8 GB full out of 5 GB TO: 1.2 GB full out of 5 GB.
I even turned on more settings to back up and it still shows 1.2 GB full in ICLOUD, 3.8 available.  No more emails to say I am running out of ICLOUD space.
[For what its worth if others are getting messages their ICLOUD is almost full, and you don't have all that much on ICLOUD.  Then when you even delete apps, messages, camera roll, turn off almost ALL icloud back ups and features the ICLOUD backup grows even larger.  My ICLOUD kept increasing in size while I was decreasing my ICLOUD storage in Managing storage.]
(All my ICLOUD contacts, notes, Safari bookmarks, were returned in place.)

  • If I delete my backup date from iCloud from my 4s will I still have all my data on my phone so I can do an up to date back up?

Hi I've purchased a 5s and just tried putting my backed up data on it, but since it's an ok old back up it had some problems.
Is there anyway that I can delete the data from iCloud with out it loosing data on my current phone so I can do an up to date back up to put on my 5s?

You don't need to delete the backup, just backup your new phone to icloud.

  • I created a new apple id account so that I didnt have to share my icloud with my brother, if i plug my phone into my computer onto my new account and sync it, then delete my old icloud from my phone will my new icloud be backed up and have all my pics ect

I've just created this new apple ID account and i need to know that if i plug my phone into my computer and sync my phone onto my new account, then delete my old icloud and apple account from my phone will my things be backed up onto my new icloud? such as my pictures notes contacts music ect... ?

Providing your Apple ID is not a .me or a .Mac address, you can change it with Apple and continue to use your account.
Start here, change your country if necessary and go to manage your account.
Once who have done this you can then correct it on your mobile device.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")
When you delete your account, all the data that is synced with iCloud will also be deleted from the device (but not from iCloud), but will be synced back to your device when you login again.
If however, your Apple ID was a .me or a .Mac address, then you will need to create a new account, follow the instructions above for deleting your account on your mobile device and then tap the "create Apple ID" button to create a new account.

  • If I restored my new iPhone from iCloud backup, and I delete the old iPhone backup to make room on iCloud to back up my new phone, will it delete everything on the new phone?

If I restored my new iPhone from iCloud backup, and I delete the old iPhone backup to make room on iCloud to back up my new phone, will it delete everything on the new phone?

I have this exact same issue.  Replaced my iPhone 4s with the new iPhone 5s, setting up my new iPhone 5s to restore from iCloud.  This completed and now I am unable to delete my old iPhone 4s iCloud backup (consuming 15.1 GB of my 20GB allocation).  How can I delete it, so that I get my 15 GB back?  I am not going to invest in additional iCloud storage, because I will be 15 GB down from the off.

  • HT204053 I already set up an iPad with my school Apple ID but want to access my home Apple ID files in iCloud.  If I delete the school ID in iCloud is my school ID still available?  In other words, can I delete an iCloud account and get it back later as i

Since I already set up an iCloud account using my school ID but need to access my home iCloud files, do I need to delete the iCloud school ID to get those home files?  I believe so.  If so, then can I use the same school ID and password later for iCloud or will it require that I change the password, etc.? Is there another way to get those home files without deleting the school ID?
OR, just help me figure out how to get my school PC to read Pages files.  That would answer all the questions.  No, I don't have technical permission or power to add programs to my PC.
Thanks for any help you can give me in this matter.

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.
When you do this, you may find that the password for your old ID isn't accepted.  If this happens, and if your old ID is an earlier version of your current ID, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iPhone when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • How can i get my icloud restored back to a previous date

Does anyone know how I can get my icloud restored back to a week ago?  My two separate apple iPhones had their iCloud accounts merged and I got my personal accounts and work accounts merged.  When trying to split them back up again, I deleted all my contacts on icloud and now I can't get them back.  can i get my icloud restored?  I restored my phone, but that didn't work.  Thanks for your help.

A partition is just a section of the disk set aside for a particular purpose. In this case, we're talking about a Mac partition and a Windows partition. They have different formats, which is how the data is stored. The disks that came with your Mac will create the Mac partition when you install, but most likely you'll lose the Windows partition. You've got kind of a mess at this point. What you should do is install the Mac OS and get everything as you want it. Then run Bootcamp to create a Windows partition and let Bootcamp do the Windows installation for you. Grant gave you good advice earlier. Don't let Windows do any partitioning. That's how you got into this mess.

  • My old Apple ID does not work, so I have a new one, but the problem is, my iCloud is backed up on my old Apple ID, and I tried to delete the account, but then it said that everything would be deleted on my iPad. How do you add another iCloud email?

My old Apple ID doesn't work, so I created a new one. However, my iPad(3) is backed-up on my old apple ID. I tried deleting it(for iCloud) but it said it would erase everything. Help?

If you want to use a new ID, you'll have to create a new iCloud account using the new ID, then migrate your existing icloud data to the new account.  Start by saving any photo stream photos that you want to keep to your camera roll (tap Edit, tap the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll).  Next, if you are syncing notes with iCloud, open them one at a time and email them to yourself so you can recreate them in the new account.  Finally, if you are syncing iWork documents with iCloud, turn off iCloud syncing in your iWork app settings.
Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Keep on My iPad when prompted.  Then sign in with your new ID to create the new account, turn your iCloud data syncing back on and choose Merge to upload the data to the new account.
When you turn Mail to On you will create a new @icloud.com email account.  You can go to icloud.com sign into your old account and set up email forwarding from your old iCloud email address to your new one if you wish

  • My iphone storage is full due to my large photo library. As I want to go on taking more photos, if I back up my phone to icloud, can I then delete all my photos from my iphone to make room for new photos?

My iphone storage is full due to my large photo library. As I want to go on taking more photos, if I back up my phone to icloud, can I then delete all my photos from my iphone to make room for new photos? Or will the next time I back up lose all those previously backed up as it is a 'new' set of data?
I just want to find the easiest and safest way of not losing all my photos while being able to take more than my iPhones storage worth as it is already full - can someone help me please? I thought icloud was the solution to not uploading my photos to the mac but I'm not sure if the way it's going is working and don't want to delete photos or lose my phone and then find out what I'm doing isn't actually storing my photos permanently. Thanks

    Hey EmilyEliza,
As you are clearly aware, it is important for you to have backups of your important data, including all of these photos you are currently keeping on your iPhone. While it is possible to use iTunes or iCloud to do backups of your iPhone, the problem becomes how to access those backups if you have deleted the photos from your iPhone. Once you have done the backup and then removed the photos from the iPhone, the only way to access the photos is by restoring the backups to the phone. See this article for information about backups made from the iPhone -
Back up and restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iCloud or iTunes - Apple Support
If you want to easily access the photos once they are off of the iPhone, another approach to this would be to import your photos from the iPhone into an application on your Mac, such as iPhoto. To learn how to do this, use the steps in this article -
Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac or Windows PC - Apple Support
Once those photos are on your computer, it is still important to back up those photos to somewhere else, so you can be sure of their safety before removing them from the iPhone. Your Mac’s Time Machine application is one method of doing this -
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Happy computing,
