ICloud drive or one drive

I use ms office on both my iMac's, my ipad2, and, my 4s.  I have the office apps on my iapd2 and iPhone (excel, pp, and word).   So far, the ms onedrive has worked great, especially since i can not only access all my files seamlessly from any one of my 4 apple devices.  Now however, i see that apple has it's own cloud, but, i am not at all sure if it is any better, and, if it is, i'm not even sure how to access is on my iPad ...
Can anybody help

I found the following issue with Yosemite for OneDrive:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/onedrive/forum/sdinstall-sdinstalling/onedriv e-app-on-os-x-1010-yosemite-beta-on-mac/f614a617-632d-4ac2-b289-a91dcb3f5c3c
This was posted for the beta version of Yosemite but I'm not sure it has been resolved.
Also, I've unfortunately had very negative experience with iCloud.  I had activated the iCloud backup system and was assured by Apple support that it was reliable.  But iCloud lost several weeks of my work.  Apple support tried unsuccessfully to retrieve it.  After that experience I began to make my own backups of iCloud material even though Apple had originally stated that it was not necessary.  Then I began to notice unpredictable behavior in iCloud relative to versions on different devices.  I decided to stop using iCloud altogether.  As a long-term Apple fan I have to unfortunately say, "User beware!"
Also note that Pages, the Apple word processing program, is far less well-developed than MS Word.  For example, it lacks a workable outlining function, indenting is unreliable, highlighting doesn't work well, the search function doesn't work consistently, it can't open multiple windows within the same document, and it can't open a separate read-only version of a file.

  • How do I back up multiple drives to one drive?

What ever happened to the standard back up software that used to scan the volume(s) you want backed up and would then back them up to one location (back in the day it was tapes) then would update changes to the backup for subsequent backups after the first? I can't seem to find anything like that. Seems like everything wants to clone a drive.
I have 2 external drives and one internal drive I want to back up to a 4TB external drive. I don't need to make a bootable copy of my startup drive nor do I want to clone a drive (or drives). I just want to do an old-fashioned backup. I do use Time Machine which backs up to one of the external drives I want to back up. The overall backup is just another layer of security for me. I also use Crash Plan to back up online but, as you can imagine, it's a lot of data and would take quite a while to restore from a crash if/when that happens. I'd like a more local solution and have Crash Plan as my last-ditch effort should things REALLY get bad.
    Anyway, looking for suggestions.
    Thanks.

with Lightroom you don't have to worry about the metadata and all changes you have made to inages being lost with a restore of just the image files. Lightroom puts all the edits in either a Sidecar file in the same folder as the image or it store the edits with the inside the image file, most when you are using DNG files. The Lightroom catalog is just that, A Catalog of your images. iPhoto and Aperture save edits to its own database structure so you need to restore both the images and the Library to keep all the edits you have made.
Also Lightroom by default does not import, move/copy, your images into its own folder structure. It leaves them where you placed them. iPhoto, and I would guess Aperture (Never used it but both iPhoto and aperture use the same library system), by default copies your images into its own folders. IMHO this is a very bad thing to do. Others don't think so.
I just make backups of my images on other computers and external drives. You can never have to many copies of your images

  • Getting data from multiple hard drives onto one drive

So here's the problem: I have a Quicksilver 867 I want to upgrade, it came with no HD so I want a new one, I put my old strawberry imac's HD into it because I still have a use for all the programs on it (i.e. photoshop) and I wanted to take advantage of the QS' hardware (superdrive), also I know my department is getting rid of their old G4 and that computer has some programs I would rather see being used than being erased, so is there a way to copy all the information from those two drives onto a new drive and still have those programs working good? I've read about HD copying software but am still hazy on how it will handle individual programs? If I have to copy the whole drive, would there be a problem with multiple system folders being on the new HD? I don't have much experience with this sort of thing, so I hope I'm describing the situation well enough.
I plan to buy Tiger and install it on the new HD and the old drives are running os 9.1 and 9.2 just to let you all know. If anyone can give me some advice I would be most grateful.
    thanks,
    nick

Having multiple system folders on the same volume is a problem waiting to happen. The safest way to have trouble-free programs is to use the original installer CDs to load the software, so that all components (both visible and invisible) are written to their designated locations on the hard drive. Copying programs from another hard drive without ownership of the media is software piracy. If your employer doesn't use the programs on the soon-to-be discarded G4, why not ask if you can have or purchase the installer CDs?

You can move data from one account to another, this can be done on a computer.

  • I have time machine saving onto two usb drives.  The backup is 4.6TB.  Each drive is 6TB.  Why is time machine only updating one drive?  (The other has been the same for two weeks.)

I have time machine saving onto two usb drives.
The total size of the files being backed up is 4.6TB.
Each external USB drive is 6TB.   So I have 12 TB of space for Time Machine.
Why is time machine only updating one USB drive?  (One drive has been the same for two weeks.)
I have selected both drives in the Time Machine settings panel.
My understanding was that it would do a full backup, and then incremental backups of changed files, getting rid of old copies as needed, and alternate between the two drives.
But it looks like drive A has one complete backup, dated two weeks ago, and drive B is the only one getting action.
There is a red icon on drive one that says the drive needs 120GB more space to do a backup -- which is strange since the whole backup set is only 4.6TB in size, and the drive is 6TB in size...

  • One drive (sky drive) for sharepoint 2013

Looking for support on the one drive: referenced here:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2903984
We have Sharepoint 2013 and would like to use the sky drive (one drive)..
We don't use Office 2013, but Office 2010
I found the link to the download of onedrive.
    The download name was:
    Setup.x86.en-us_GrooveRetail_3V9N8-W93CC-FQPB8-Y9WVF-TVGJ3_TX_PR.exe
I am trying to send the one drive out to all our computers at our business to be used with Sharepoint 2013.
The downloaded install doesn't appear to be a standalone install.  I opened up a command line.
    put Setup.x86.en-us_GrooveRetail_3V9N8-W93CC-FQPB8-Y9WVF-TVGJ3_TX_PR.exe /?
    This gives the following output.
    Usage:
SETUP mode [path to configuration file]
SETUP /download [path to configuration file]
SETUP /configure [path to configuration file]
SETUP /packager [path to configuration file] [output path]
SETUP /help [path to configuration file]
/download  Downloads files to create an Office16 installation source
/configure  Adds, removes, or configures an Office16 installation
/packager  Produces an Office App-V package from an Office installation source
     /help  - Prints this message
    I tried the Setup.x86.en-us_GrooveRetail_3V9N8-W93CC-FQPB8-Y9WVF-TVGJ3_TX_PR.exe /download
This supposedly will download files needed to create an office16 installation source.  I don't want an office16 installation source, but I want the onedrive stanalone installer.
The command didn't download any files.
So does anyone know how to deploy the onedrive to multiple computers.  Make note we don't have office 2013 any reference to trying to create a custom install for it useless because we don't have the product.
    Please help.
    Adam J.

Do you know where to find the .msi? I have the above .iso extracted. If I run groovemui.msi I get the following error:
Error 1713: Setup cannot install one of the required products for Microsoft GrooveMUI (English) 2013.
    Thanks!
EDIT: I am also trying to install ODfB standalone on top of Office 2010.
    Hi vmanning,
you will need to use the setup.exe (found in the Office2013 ISO) - you can't just use the MSI for groove (ODfB).
You will need to create a customisation of the Office2013 (either MSPfile, or config.xml), to set the feature states as you wish (i.e. ODfB=runfrommycomputer(Local), and everything else=notavailable(Absent))

Also, note that there is a bug in the Office2013+SP1 ISO, so to avoid this bug, use the original Office2013RTM ISO; refer:

  • Can No Longer Write files to a NSF-mounted drive on one Server. Error -36

    Hi Folks:
I have searched the Net (including these forums now) for several hours and found nothing definite.
The story is this: I have a Fedora 14 server that, up to this point, has been acting as a file server. Sometime last week (around the 28th we think) it stopped allowing people to copy files from the Mac OS X 10.6.8 workstations (which is what we have, largely) to the shared drives. It fails with a "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "" can't be read or written. (Error Code -36)."  People can mount the drives in question, see them, read from them, copy from them, but not copy anything, or write anything (Save as from Word) to the drives.
Now at about the time period where this started we moved a mySQL database from this particular server somewhere else. As part of that operation, the server was rebooted. The server where we moved the DB to was not. It also have an NFS share that continues to work.
I have verified service by service that nothing is running that shouldn't be. One of my thoughts was that something came up that shouldn't of when the reboot happened. Everything seems fine in that regard.
My looking through the Net has yielded several possible answers none of which has worked. One has been that this is a sign of bad media.  I have checked the drive array in question three seperate times. It has passed all those times. I started another share on a separate spindle on the server and I still cannot write to this new share on a totally different drive.
The drives in question are formatted for EXT3 (hey, I've giving out as many details as I can here!  :-)  ).
I have also repaired permissions on the SOURCE drives. No luck there.
My export file looks like this:
    /raid/data/BigBang
    *(rw,insecure,sync,no_subtree_check,nohide,all_squash)
    /raid/data
    *(rw,insecure,sync,no_subtree_check,nohide,no_root_squash)
    /raid
    *(rw,insecure,sync,no_subtree_check,nohide,no_root_squash)
    /home/rkinne/test
    *(rw,insecure,sync,no_subtree_check,nohide,no_root_squash)
No thoughts on security right now. I'm trying to get this darn thing to work, especially on /raid/data/BigBang. That share WAS "no_root_squash" but I changed it to "all_squash" as I've been flailing around today. There was no change in behavior. The exports file on the other server that is working is virtually identical.
Two Mac workstations work right now. One is running 10.4. The other is running 10.7.3. The rest - the problematic ones - are running 10.6.8. One is running 10.5 and is also not working.
I have also flushed the DNS caches from the servers in question, but its too early to see if that will do something yet.
This issue has flumouxed folks for years now. I understand that. Oddly, it JUST came out of the blue for us.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I understand the process you are describing,  In the past I have been able to embed metadata to a Raw file, move it to a server, pick that file up on another computer and see the metadata without need of the .xmp sidecar.  Is the ability to embed no longer supported  by Photoshop? Since this issue began we have taken to doing all our metadata editing in PhotoMechanic, which embeds without creating a sidecar.  If Photoshop is pushing people to create sidecar .xmp files only for writing metadata to Raw files I will probabaly move fully to PhotoMechanic because using sidecars has proven tricky in the past with how our files get moved around.
If using Adobe Camera Raw on camera raw file you either have an XMP sidecar file created or the data is stored in a database.  Which happens it is your option in Edit/camera raw.  If you use ACR and edit a jpeg it does not create a distinct XMP file but it is also not directly written to the image either.  One can still delete the edits in Bridge with Edit/develp settings.
If you use a DNG the metadata is written to the image.  Not sure what process Photo Mechanic uses.
It appears to be a permission problem as other than CS6 Bridge is now 64 bit and has a new cache method there are no changes in how it handles metadata.

  • Issue with file upload to Microsoft One Drive

    Hi,
My uploaded file(25.6MB, 44 seconds long) from Adobe Premier Elements 9  will not play on Microsoft One Drive(MOD),
Is anyone else have problems using MOD?
I created  the file  I uploaded on my  new HP Envy Computer(x64 proccessor with 8 gig of RAM).
I  created this file on the  Adobe Premier Elements 9  software, saved to my computer, and then uploaded to MOD.
I created it from my project  by choosing the MPEG category  Then within the MPEG category  I chose the HD 720p 30 footprint as the smallest and fastest option to upload.
. I saved as a file  in a folder on my computer.  Don't know if this makes a difference but when I right clicked I chose "Windows Media Player" as the "Opens With" option.Don't think "Opens With" option really matter? Doesn't MOD automatically convert the file to whatever they want to use to open the file anyway?
So that is the file I uploaded  to MOD using the MOD  "Upload" button.
When I clicked to play, after waiting for what I assume was a "buffering process" , I got  a "Sorry, This video can't be played." message.
Also, FYI , i uploaded to Google Drive . It plays but pauses to buffer about 30 seconds in.
You Tube is the another drive I uploaded to. It plays perfectly there. But I would preferr to play on MOD. You feedback appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • Copy File From One Drive to Another & Missing Keyword Tags

    Hi,
I use LR 2.7.  I want to copy one file from one drive to another drive with the same file name.  I thought you could drag the file, but it doesn't copy over the file in the other drive, can you explain what I have to do?
Also, I tried to import the folder into another drive, but it doesn't copy the keyword tags.  Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks
    Barb

    Hey Barb,
Well, if you use the Year/Month/Day/pictures_here  format, none of the folders contains a massive amount of folders.  It's not the number of folders that generates problems, it's having them all in _one_ folder that creates slow-down issues.  Imagine if you had a deck of cards; look for one card... you have to go through all 52 cards to find it.  But, if you broke it down into the 4 groups, you only have to go through 13, which is lots faster.  Now imagine going through 15000 instead of 52...
Look at the way lightroom can automatically import by date;  it has several preset formats.  If you pick one of those, then when you import new photos, it will automatically create any missing ones, and you have lots less to do.
Depending on how much work you have already done, you might consider making a new catalog and just importing all of your photos again, and let it create everything quickly for you.
You could save all of your "edit" changes by writing out all of the xmp files first.  But with 15000 files in one directory, this will double it to 30000 (one per image!), but will preserve all of your edits if you choose to make a new catalog approach.
As for combing catalogs, once you have one catalog the way you want it, you can select "import from catalog" and it will suck it into a new one, thus combining the catalogs.  The only problem I can see is that it will import it in the format you already have it, so you have to organize it manually before you import it.  Otherwise, you'll get your old format and your new format in the one catalog (but can then move pictures around if you need to).
Personally,  I'd go the 'write xmp files, create new catalog' approach.  Then just recreate my collections, etc.
But either way you do it, it will take some time processing, as that's a lot of files to start with!
    Ciao!
    Jason

  • Is it possible to have two USB drives for the IPad?  I want to bring RAW photo files from my camera, through the IPad and back to an external hard drive.  One of my cameras does not use an SD card.  How can I do this?

Is it possible to have two USB drives for the IPad?  I want to bring RAW files from my camera through the IPad and out to an external hard drive.  One of my cameras has an SD card but the other one doesn't have a card that would fit in any of the camera devices I've seen on line.  Realted to this, I bought the IPad camera accessory.  Can I put the SD card in the device and also hook the external hard drive to the USB port of the accessory and download from the camera to the hard drive?  Can I put Lightroom or the Nikon photo editing software on the IPad?  Right now I carry a PC laptop and external hard drives with me on wildernes trips.  Internet and WiFi are not available.  Because I shoot so many photos and they're in RAW I need to download from the camera to the external drive because I run out of memory on the PC (and it has much more memory than the IPad).  I have Nikon NX software and lightroom on my PC.  I'd love to be able to reduce the weight I carry by using the IPad to edit my photos each night while on trips.  Is this possible and how would I do it?  I'd appreciate any guidance.

No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.

  • Can you move events from one drive to another easily?

I've just bought an external firewire drive to dedicate to my Sony HD camcorder material.
I've only imported 30 mins or so of stuff onto the Mac's internal drive with iMovie '08, and would like to know if anyone's managed to easily copy 'events' from one drive to another to merge/split content.
Is it just a case of copying event folders from the iMovie Events folder to the external drive, but if so do you have to specify a particular path?
Similarly, can you just move the individual 'Projects' or archive to DVD etc as they will invariably take up lots of space for longer footage? Does the projects file just hold references to the assembled clips, in which case moving events would scupper things as I seem to have several movie files in there already though these may just be things I uploaded to .Mac to test out.
This may all be a bit of trial and error. Hopefully clips are only references unlike the pretty huge but self-contained iMovie 6 HD project packages. This also raises issues about how to easily backup all your 'events'.
    AC

    Observation:
Just imported 15mins of video from the Sony.
When you click import you are asked which drive to save to.
As well as the Mac's internal drive, all my attached USB drives which are formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled) appear as targets to save to as well as teh Firewire drive.
I selected the Firewire drive and don't recall an option to create a sub-folder. After import a new top level folder of iMovie Events was created, but no others.
Presumably iMovie Projects/Shared folders only exist on the boot drive.
I'm assuming that this structure will allow you to share movie Events between Macs using external drives.
Again, an assumption but I suspect iMovie scans all available suitable hard drives and checks what content is available in top level iMovie Events folders for non-boot drives as well as this folder in the user's Movies folder.
    Rambling observations over for now.

    Before you have another accident:
Buy a UPS of good quality and sufficient to your needs.
I would have to assume that the drives were connected to a PCI PATA card, hopefully. Otherwise, well RAID and having drives on the same bus (master and slave).
And no backup, none at all...
Get your hands on a G4.
Data Rescue 3 from Prosoft maybe.
