ICloud drive saves multiple copies?!?

I'm using this new Yosemite feature, iCloud drive. It seems like that if I save a file in the folder and open it up with an application, I get two copies of the same file. One copy in the iCloud folder and another in the folder of the app inside iCloud folder!?!
Sorry, I don't get it. Today I also got in the "Preview" folder INSIDE iCloud folder, two files with .alias extension, what?!?
need help
thanks

  • How do I save multiple copies of the same photo with different edits

I want to make several photos (each with different crops and enhancements) from one existing photo and also want to keep my original as is for future edits.. Is there a save as feature or a way to copy paste to different albums.

Sha the original to itunes or the Camera Roll. Make the edits you want the share the photo to the Camera Roll or more per able iTunes. The make more edits and share again. To go back to the original photo you can use the Revert to Original function.

  • Multiple copies of same files in my hard drive

    hello:
Somehow I have managed to fill up my hard drive with multiple copies of
the same files. So, these copies are filling up drive space.
Does anyone know of a software that can point out the copies? Something that will make it easier for me to determine that I have copies of the same file and so I can delete the copies.
    thanks!!

    thanks for the reply.
    I have tried Spotlight already.
But it's not a good solution.
First of all, I don't even know which files i have multiple copies of.
And even though I may have files and folders with the same name, I don't know if the contents are identical ....etc.
    It's just a mess.

  • Any way to turn OFF that stupid saving of multiple copies of documents?!

I would love to know who thought it was a good idea to add this WITHOUT a way to turn it off!! So when you're in a text document (or any other kind of file that you can make changes in) you can go into the Time Machine icon on the status bar, select "Enter Time Machine" and there will be multiple versions of your document from various states auto saved so that you can go back to a previous version of your document for whatever reason. This can be a great thing, EXCEPT when you have no choice in that matter!
I DO NOT NEED a hundred copies of every single document I have on my computer because I happened to do a lot of tweeking to minor lines of text or make numerous very minor changes. And before anyone asks (because I am SO sick of answering this question twenty times a day) I DO NOT have a time machine hard drive OR Time Capsule connected to my computer in any way at all, (under normal usage. I do have a Time Machine hard drive I manually connect every few days to back up my computer, I just don't ALWAYS have it connected because it's a laptop) these multiple copies are being saved into my computer and taking up valuable hard drive space and there's no way to shut off this feature. I just called into Apple and the only thing they said was "Well it doesn't take up very much hard drive space" completely failing to see the point that I don't want it to take up ANY space because, again, I DON'T NEED A HUNDRED COPIES OF EVERY DOCUMENT IN MY COMPUTER!!!
Does anyone have any idea how to shut off this "feature" because it is utterly stupid. in System Settings -> General I checked "Ask to keep changes when closing documents" and I selected "None" in the "Show Recent Items for Documents, Apps and Servers" but it still saves multiple copies of my documents. Can anyone  help me figure out how to shut this off and delete the multiple copies? Not all of us are hysterical computer users opening up random documents and slapping the keyboard with our open palms requiring the ability to go back to multiple pages of the same document, some of us actually KNOW how to open up something, make a change and save it. We don't need the computer to constantly save multiple copies of everything we do so there needs to be SOME way to shut this off. What about my final cut, Aperture, Motion and any other program that make files? Am I going to have a thousand copies of every single video I ever edit from this point on? (cause anyone who does video editing knows there will be MANY tweeks and changes to those) What about Pages, Numbers or Keynote? How much room on my hard drive is going to be wasted storing hundreds of copies of hundreds of documents every time I wanted to change a graph colour slightly, or add tax into a spreadsheet, or change a decimal point in a presentation? Adding this without a way to shut it off was the most ridiculous thing I've seen! Thanks to anyone that can help.

Actually, there are two mechanisms by which Mountain Lion does this, both of which are on by default (for laptops; only one of which is on by default for desktops).
You mention going into the Time Machine icon in the menubar? Good news - that one's easy to turn off.
To do so, you need to open Terminal.app (Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) and copy/paste this line into the Terminal window:
    sudo tmutil disablelocal
press 'return' on your keyboard and enter your Admin password. Note that the password does not echo to the screen, so type carefully.
The second mechanism is what Apple call 'Versions'. The bad news is you can't turn Versions off; the good news is it's only enabled on certain Apple apps like Preview, TextEdit, XCode, Pages, Numbers, Keynote etc. The only way to avoid Versions, therefore, is to use alternatives such as Skim (for Preview), Tincta (for TextEdit) and LibreOffice for Pages, Numbers, Keynote (alas, I don't know of an alternative for XCode).

  • Using icloud drive as a media storage site

i use both Adobe lightroom and iphoto ( now photos) for my pictures. Thus they comprise the bulk of my hard drive storage use. I am wondering if I can just store these in the icloud drive and erase them from my hard drive to free up space. I also have an external disc that I use for this purpose but I thought it seems really much easier if this would be possible. Thanks!

Putting a Photos Library on iCloud Drive will corrupt it. For the Photos Library use iCloud Photo Library (Beta). If you enable "Optimize Storage", the original image files will be stored in iCloud and not on your Mac.  (iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ)
On iCloud Drive, on the other hand, you would not save any storage at all, since all documents on iCloud Drive have shadow copies on your Mac.

  • .icloud-drive file in root of iCloud drive folder

I have noticed a rather strange file in the root of my iCloud drive folder on iCloud.com

    Hello rhearob,
Apple did not mention or publish anything so far which indicates that it is possible to share iCloud Drive folders or to access iCloud Drive from multiple Apple IDs. As KiltedTim wrote, it could be that Apple is going to add additional functionalities to iCloud Drive once Yosemite is released, but as of today, nothing has been announced.

  • ICloud Drive File Sharing

My husband and I both have long standing AppleID's and iCloud accounts (I have a MBP running the Yosemite Beta, he has an Air running the Yosemite Beta - we bothe have 6 plusses running iOS 8).  He operates a small business that we both work on (I do all of his marketing design, photography, etc).  We would like to both use his iCloud drive to store and manage his business related files.  We have set up a Family share in iOS.
Right now those files are stored on a Mavericks server that we access via webdav.  However we are looking to reduce our IT infrastructure and expense by moving that data to the cloud and would prefer it to be iCloud.  Is there any way that any of you know for two AppleIDs to access the same iCloud drive?

  • Multiple apple ID's - iCloud drive and google drive?

I've got a variety of apple devices and am trying to work out the best way to keep documents in sync across them all. The ideal solution would be to use iCloud drive but my macbook and iPhone are on one apple ID and my wife iPad and iPhone are on another. I'd like to keep them on separate apple ID's as we have different contact groups and don't want to see iCloud tabs for each other, etc. Plus backing up 4 devices to one iCloud account won't leave much space for anything else and when Microsoft give out 30gb, google give out 10gb the 5gb iCloud allowance is pretty poor.
At the moment we use google drive to store all our documents and just access this on our devices via the drive app. I'd really like to switch to using iCloud drive as it'll mean I can use iWork more than office but there just doesn't seem to be a way to keep documents in sync across multiple apple ID's.  Google drive also doesn't cater for iWork file formats so I can't simply save everything in there and just copy over to iCloud drive.
Does anyone have any bright ideas? Are there any third party iOS apps that will let you access items stored in icloud drive? I'd also thought about trying to use automator or applescript to copy a few select documents over to iCloud drive and convert to the iWork formats but I'm quite new to all that so not very sure where to start.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I have a similar problem with this as well.  For example, I like to keep the "contacts" of me and my spouse updated on both of our phones.  In order for this to happen, I have to sign in to "icloud" on both devices & mac with my apple ID.  It would be much better if this could be shared/combined with multiple devices as an option.  I don't think "icloud drive" solve's this problem.

  • My iCloud drive is slow to save and share Pages documents with my IOS devices

My iCloud drive is slow to update and share my Pages documents with IOS devices.  When I save a document to the iCloud drive I get a Cloud symbol in the Name line (behind the document name) and a bar in the Size column (like it's trying to save the document but is unable to do so).  When I see the document in the document list on the Pages app on my IOS device it has a gray line along the bottom and I can't open the document in the Pages app.

Same for me, too - for the last few days.  Reminiscent of a few weeks back when iTunes and Apple TV ground to a crawl.  Of course Apple system status is green.  After several days it just started working again.  At least with Mac iCloud I have tried to use multiple networks/carriers so now there's no blaming AT&T on this one.
Called support and got the extended wait time message.  Gave up.
Love my devices and software, but Apple really has poor cloud support.  They won't even own up to the issues.  If my employer didn't block dropbox, absolutely done deal I'd be off iCloud back with Dropbox.

  • How do I manage multiple iCloud accounts for personal iCloud Drive & personal calling?

Yosemite has the ability now to make and receive phone calls as well as to use an iCloud Drive to share documents across devices (similar to DropBox, but as you will see with one major customization flaw).  These are wonderful featurew, however, unless I am following the directions incorrectly my computer with Yosemite has to have the same iCloud account as is used on my iPhone for iMessage (for calling) and for virtually everything else for iCloud Drive (ie there is no way to set-up a separate iCloud account for iCloud Drive).
Now for iMessage I use a private iCloud account, but for the iPhone itself I actually use an iCloud account shared with my family.  Why?  Because when we use a shared iCloud account we can share a number of things here such as:
Location  on Find iPhone.  This works way better than find my friends and also makes it easy for us to lock a device if it's stolen since all of us know how to do this.
Calendar not critical, but allows us to put some family events here
Notes, Very cool as we can share shopping lists which is very helpful when you show up at the grocery and want to know what to get or to Costco etc
Reminders Also very cool as we can create reminders for each other for when we get home or whatever
Files on iCloud Drive Yes there are some files that it would be nice to share and we can do this (ideally there would be multiple accounts for this)
Now I haven't really used iCloud Drive much but you can easily imagine how some documents I might want to share with the family on iCloud while other's I might not.
Now when you switch your Facetime iCloud account to the same as the iPhone that is one private iCloud account shared with an application on another device that uses the same iCloud account.  That is NO PROBLEM.  However, the minute you activate the ability to call phones it requires that you now have the SAME iCloud account in the main computer.  Now BINGO I have a problem as noted above I want to be able to share certain things with other devices.
Does anyone have a solution or workaround?
Otherwise it seems the only thing to suggest is that Apple consider a feature enhancement that allows you to make cell calls from your computer WITHOUT switching the iCloud account to the main account.  For that matter it would be very useful if they could figure out how to partition the iCloud features so that I can decide which iCloud account does what or like DropBox give permissions for certain things and allow the individual users to decide what they want and don't want.
    Thanks.

    Gail,
No you are not being dense, you are just trying to be helpful.  I may not have explained the problem very well.  Setting up a Family iCloud account works great!  However, if that account name is also used for your iMessage, Facetime, and now cellular calls you have an issue with your calls going to the entire family (or worse the thing just not working), your iMessages if multiple phone numbers are trying to use the same icloud account usually get messed up, and their Facetime accounts might end up showing up as you instead of them.  In fact, I think you can't call your family members in this situation and I'm not sure iMessage works very well either.  So what everyone does is create a personal iCloud account for personal features such as iMessage, FaceTime, etc.
Now in theory I could co-opt the Family iCloud account for my calls, but then no one else would be able to use the call feature, because unless I'm mistaken you can't have multiple phone numbers attached to the call Forward and still have them recognize which calls to forward to which phones.    If they don't care for this feature it might work (I'm experimenting now), but I don't think that's what Apple intended.
It is possible to do a switch, which may be what you are suggesting.  This would involve creating a separate profile on the computer that is used for making phone calls.  I would, however, still need to co-opt the iCloud account for just my number and worse I wouldn't be able to make any calls unless I was in that profile.  One of the great advantages of calling from your computer is that you make the call while you are working on something else which is inevitably your work or your personal stuff which is NOT likely to be in the newly created family profile.
Thanks for the suggestion, but I hope this helps you understand either how little I understand of your suggestion or why it doesn't quite meet my needs.

  • I am being asked to upgrade to iCloud Drive but indications are that I will not be able to access up to date details on any of my documents on my Mac without going into iCloud first.  Have I got this interpretation right or can I save changes to acce

I am being asked to upgrade to iCloud Drive but indications are that I will not be able to access up to date details on any of my documents on my Mac without going into iCloud first.  Have I got this interpretation right or can I save changes to access the new versions on my iMac?

    That is Apple's statement:
Using iWork with iCloud Drive - Apple Support
    Options for iWork customers
You can upgrade to iCloud Drive today if you want to keep your documents up to date in iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, and you want to use the iWork web apps on iCloud.com and the Share via iCloud feature.
You can upgrade to iCloud Drive later if you want to keep your documents up to date with your apps on iOS 7 or earlier and OS X Mavericks or earlier.
    Upgrade to iCloud Drive today
To access the most recent versions of your documents from a Mac with OS X Mavericks or earlier, you’ll need to go to iCloud.com and access Pages, Numbers, and Keynote from there. On a PC, you can install iCloud for Windows and set up iCloud Drive.
If you upgrade to iCloud Drive now:
Your documents will keep up to date across devices with iOS 8, Macs with OS X Yosemite, PCs with iCloud for Windows, and iCloud.com.
Your documents will no longer keep up to date on devices with iOS 7 and Macs with OS X Mavericks or earlier.
You’ll be able to use the iWork web apps on iCloud.com.
You’ll be able to use the Share via iCloud feature with iOS 8, OS X Yosemite, and iCloud.com.
Documents you previously shared via iCloud will be accessible to collaborators.
    Upgrade to iCloud Drive later
Note that until you upgrade your iCloud account to iCloud Drive, you won’t be able to use the iWork web apps on iCloud.com or the Share via iCloud feature.     If you don’t upgrade to iCloud Drive at this time:
Your documents will keep up to date across devices with iOS 8 and across devices with iOS 7 and Macs with OS X Mavericks or earlier.
You won’t be able to use the iWork web apps on iCloud.com.
You won’t be able to use the Share via iCloud feature.
Documents you previously shared via iCloud won’t be accessible to collaborators until you upgrade to iCloud Drive.

  • After downloading music and dragging into iTunes I end up with multiple copies of the album on my hard drive. I do have the "copy files into iTunes library" checked. When I try to erase one of the copies I end up with red ! in iTunes library.

Please Help!  After downloading an album and dragging it into itunes I end up having multiple copies of the album on my hard drive.  I do have (under Itunes preferences, advanced) copy songs into itunes library "checked".  I'm sure this is the reason for the multiple copies.  When I try to delete one of the copies of the album and go back to itunes and try playing a song, I get a red exclamtion point next to the song with an error message saying itunes cannot locate file. My questions are, Does Itunes literally make a copy of the song? If so , How do you know which file to delete?

Sony's own entertainment software on the Vaio plays merry **** with iTunes, worse there's no telling when it will kick in.
First head over to the Sony Vaio site and get the update for the software, that will stop it from messing with the iTunes database/library files when you connect your iPod.

    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNP588EQ&updid=4526&osid=28
With that stopped you can add the music back without fear of this happening again.

  • Laserjet 5000 with windows 7 driver cannot print multiple copies unless disabling mopier

Customer has Laserjet 5000 that they have been using for approx 5 years. It is connected to one computer with the standard parallel cable and the driver is using lpt1. It is used mainly to print word documents and a multi page publisher document. The computer used to be a windows xp computer and all  worked  well with the PCL6 driver and that is the only driver that was used
They just bought a new Windows 7 32 bit computer and now it has lost some of the functionality.
The first driver that was loaded was the driver that Windows 7 used after you use the windows update button that you get during the add printer wizard. I think it was the pcl 5 driver as that is the driver that the computer will install if you remove the printer and then restart the computer. Using this driver, when you choose to print more than one page or multiple copies, it will just print the first page or copy and there will not be any errors displayed.
I have since downloaded the PCL6 driver, PS driver and PCL5 driver from HP's website and tried all of them.
The PS driver will print more than one page, but when it gets to about the 4th page the printer prints out an error page. The error is PCL XL error, Subsystem: Kernel, Error: Unsupported protocol, Operator 0x0, Position:0
The PCl 6 driver will print the same error page and not print any print jobs, even if it is just a single page, single copy job.
The pcl 5 driver prints one page and then stops printing, no errors.
When I disable the mopier under device settings, the pcl5 driver will print everything just fine. Only problem is, it will not collate. The collate checkbox is available and checked when we try the multiple page multiple copy publisher document, but it just prints out as if we do not have collate checked. If we could get collation to work, than we are good to go.
I have not tried the PS driver with the mopier disabled.
The PCL6 driver stills returns the pcl xl error with the mopier disabled.
The printer does not have any extra memory, just the 4 mb standard that came with the printer. I am wondering if this is a memory issue triggered by Windows 7and I just need to get more memory for the printer. (Computer has 4 gb of memory)
Anybody else have a similar issue and got theirs fixed?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi jnickelsen,
I understand the printer won't print multiple copies.
    Thank you for your reply.
I will be happy to help you with this.
This printer doesn't have the Mopier settings.
    What drivers are you using?
Did you download the drivers or are you using the Windows preinstalled drivers?
If you are using the Windows preinstalled drivers then I would download the latest drivers. Here is the URL for the HP LaserJet Full Feature Software and Driver.
I would download and run the Print and Scan Doctor since it might resolve the issue automatically.

  • How do I save a file to iCloud Drive and NOT have it sync to all my devices?

I have a Macbook Air with 128GB of SSD storage.  I have a Mac Mini with 2TB of storage.  Both are running OS X 10.10 with iCloud Drive enabled.  All iOS devices are on 8.0+ with iCloud Drive.  I want to upload files to my iCloud Drive from my Macbook Air and then delete them off my Air to save valuable storage space.  When I try to delete a file from my iCloud Drive on my MB Air, it prompts me to say that the file will be deleted from ALL iCloud Drive devices.  I just want delete it locally on the MB Air.  Is there a way to do this?  Do I have to do it through the iCloud Drive web interface?  Can I just make a folder in iCloud Drive that does not sync to the other devices but you can still "view" the files?  I just want to save files in the iCloud but not have all those files synced on my Macbook Air.  Make sense?   Help please!  Thank you in advance.

You're going to find that pretty much every cloud storage system works in a similar way. Some, like OneDrive, will allow you to select what folders sync to and from every machine it's installed on.
Maybe something like that would fit your needs better.
