ICloud email automatically emptying trash?

I've used Apple email services for some time (I still use my .mac address).  I primarily access my email from the Mail.app on two computers (Mac Pro and Macbook Air) and from my iPhone.
I've noticed that my deleted emails have been disappearing from the Trash mailbox.  This isn't a huge deal for me since I'm not nutty about archiving and saving every email (like Gmail wants you to do), but I have lost some emails that I wish I still had.  Since I haven't been paying that close attention, I do not know how long this has been happening.
I checked the preferences for my iCloud email for the Mail.app on both computers I use-- both are setup to never delete emails from the Trash.
Then I logged into iCloud, thinking maybe there's a setting in there that's delteing the emails.  Sure enough, just below the option to "Move deleted messages to: [Trash]" it says, "Messages will be deleted from the trash after 30 days."
How can I turn this off?  Is it even possible?  Is this now a permanent fixture in iCloud?  (If so, it may be time for me to make the dreaded move to Gmail.  Not that I'm a nut about saving emails, but I am a nut about user control.)
Thanks.

Hi trident,
Here is the help screen for iCloud:
Change where deleted messages are stored
By default, deleted messages are stored in the Trash for 30 days. If you don’t want your messages to be automatically deleted after 30 days, you can have the Delete command move them to another folder.
Choose Preferences from the Action pop-up menu at the top of the window.
In the General pane, select the “Move deleted messages to” checkbox, choose another folder from the menu, and click Done.
You don't have to do anything special - just create an alternate folder, and select that in the iCloud preferences for Deleted Mail. Once you have assigned a different folder name (TRASH2, for example), then it will automatically go to that folder when you delete it. And then you will retain complete user control of when your deleted emails go away....
Hope this helps,
GB

I have taken off/turned off iCloud on my mac mini (OS 10.8) but when I send an email and use contacts , it will convert the non - iCloud email to an iCloud email automatically.  Anyway to stop this automatic conversation?

    Robert...
the iCloud webserver wont accept my password for a .mac login, nor will it allow me to change it
See if you can change your password >  Apple - My Apple ID
If that doesn't help, launch iTunes on your computer.
From the iTunes menu bar click iTunes / Preferences then select the Advanced tab.
Click: Reset warnings and Reset cache
    Click OK.
    Restart your computer.
    If that that doesn't help...
Moreover, when I try to go into my .mac account on the web,
Delete all apple cookies and empty your browser cache.
See if  you can access your account at iCloud.com

    Hi OaksterMe,
In order to completely delete emails from your devices and free up space in iCloud, you should follow the steps in this article -

  • Automatically Empty Trash in Mail

Is there a way to setup mail so that it will empty my trash say once a week? I looked in automator, but I did not find an action to do this. If I forget to check my trash, the next thing I know, I'm almost out of space on my email account. I am using an IMAP server setup if that makes a difference. Any guidance is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

in mail preferences->accounts->mailbox behavior there is an option to permanently delete messages in trash after a certain time. the default is 1 week I believe. That means that you don't have to do anything.

  • Anyway to "Automatically empty trash"?

So like my subject title says, I am wondering if their is anyway to setup Snow Leopard so that it reserves no space for the files that are sent to the trash; and make it automatically delete a file whenever I delete it without having to empty the trash?
For example, in Windows XP I was able to set the trash so that it would automatically delete a file off my hard drive instead of just sending it into the trash bin. And that is what I want to be able to do on my Mac.

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, enter ~/.Trash/ as the path, click on an empty space in the window, choose Get Info from the File menu, and set the permissions so you can't write to that folder. This needs to be repeated for each external drive, using /Volumes/volumename/.Trashes/501/ as the path. If 501 doesn't work, increment the number until it does.

  • Emails in my 'trash' are being deleted after about 5 weeks, but I want to retain them. I have elected 'never' on the 'permanently erase deleted messages' option, so I'm not sure why this happening?

emails in my 'trash' are being deleted after about 5 weeks, but I want to retain them. I have selected 'never' on the 'permanently erase deleted messages' option, so I'm not sure why this happening? any ideas?

iCloud emails in the Trash are deleted after 30 days on the website, and this over-rides the 'never' setting in Mail. There is no way of stopping this. (The Trash isn't really intended as a permanent storage area.)
Try this workaround. Go to http://www.icloud.com and go to the Mail page. In the sidebar, click on '+' to the right of 'Folders' to create a new folder; give it a suitable name.
Now click on the cogwheel icon at bottom left. At the bottom of the pane which opens, set the 'Move deleted messages to' drop-down menu to your new folder.
I'm not sure whether, when you delete messages in the Mail application, they will go to the Trash or your new folder - you'll need to experiment. I have a nasty feeling that Mail will simply move them to the Trash as before. If this is the case you will have to move them to your new folder manually - dragging messages directly to this folder rather than hitting the delete key will be the easiest way.

  • HT201342 I'm a bit confused. Is the new iCloud email address opt-in or opt-out?

    Hello all
I'm a little confused. Is the iCloud opt-in or opt-out?  There is nowhere in the message I recived to take any action now, but the wording implies that the email address is reserved for me, if I want it.  In other words, if I do nothing, do I get the iCloud email automatically at some point "in a few weeks".
    thx

ok thanks, so if I do nothing straight away, they won't free the address up and give it to someone else, correct?

  • Why is the trash automatically emptied on my email account?

My emails used to be saved in the trash and I kept all of them for future reference. Now they just disappear. Is there a setting I can change to change this?

''re: My emails used to be saved in the trash and I kept all of them for future reference.''
'Trash' is for items you do not want. 'Trash' means 'Rubblish' to throw away; discard; delete.
They are only in the Trash because you selected to 'delete' them or you moved them manually.
The reason for having a 'Trash' folder is to act as a stop gap because sometimes you might delete an email in error and want to rescue it.
Trash folder is not the place to store items that you want to keep.
Please create new folders to organise your wanted emails.
    Use 'Trash' for unwanted emails.
Trash folder (also known as 'Deleted') can be auto emptied on exit if option is selected.
Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings for the mail account
    or
Menu Icon > Options > Account Settings > Server Settings for the mail account
uncheck/select as appropriate: 'Empty Trash on exit'
    click on OK.
If you have an Imap mail account, there may be a different policy used by the server. Some auto empty Trash folder periodically by default and there is nothing you can do about it. After all, Trash is for unwanted items, so after a period of time allowing for rescuing an email deleted in error, they clear this folder to create more space.
    Background info:
When you select to delete an email or put it in 'Trash', from your point of view it moves from eg: inbox to 'Trash'
In reality, it is still in the Inbox as a 'marked as deled' email hidden from view. So it is still taking up space in the Inbox.
When you compact your Inbox folder those 'marked as deleted' are removed, thus freeing up space.
When you see a folder in the Folder Pane, this is actually an mbox file (assuming you Pop mail account or synchronise subscribed imap folders).
When emails are downloaded they are not stored as individual .eml files, they are stored one after the other in the order they were downloaded in the same 'file'. So you do not want to put all your emails into a single or a couple of files.
Create folders to organise mail into smaller subsets.
Archive older mail to free up space in regular used folders.
    See info on Archiving.

  • Empty trash automatically sooner than 30 days??

Any way to empty trash automatically sooner than 30 days??  In  preferences, it states that messages will be deleted from trash in 30 days.  I do not want deleted mail hanging around that long.  I have applied rules to  certain spam/junk emails which moves them directly to the trash when it comes in, but I do not want this mail sitting in my trash... I want it gone!  I would actually prefer to have this junk automatically bounced or removed altogether, but there is no option to do that.  I hate the fact that there is so little customization possible with the iCloud mail.

You can delete individual messages from a conversation or delete entire conversations
Go in to Messages - look for the Edit button at the top left - clicking it will enable you to select multiple conversations that you can delete
For deleting individual messages - you have to open the conversation - then tap and hold your finger on a message till you get the "More" pop up. Click on "More" and that as well as other messages become select-able and there is a trash can at the left bottom to click on when you are done selecting them

If this is your iCloud email account, whcn you delete an email from any of your devices, they are moved to the trash on all devices/computers, then the trash is automatically deleted after 30 days.  That's how IMAP accounts work.  You can't delete them from your device and keep it on the server because you are reading and deleting from the server itself.
If you want to keep them on your Mac, you'll need to move them to a folder rather than deleting them.  When you do, they will be moved to the same folder on your other devices.

  • Why are the emails in my "trash" folder deleted automatically every Saturday?

Why are the emails in my "trash" folder deleted automatically every Saturday?  The employee at the Apple Store told me to contact my email carrier, but they told me it was an Apple issue.
    iPhone5c  iOS 8.1.2

I keep Outlook Express running on my desktop all the time.  The emails come into the inboxes of both my desktop and my iPhone.  Once the emails are received on the desktop and I read them on my phone, they automatically go into the trash folder.  If it really is trash, I manually delete them and they go over to the other trash folder.  Then I can empty all of them at once.  If it's really important, sometimes I manually move it to another folder.  But then Saturday comes along and the trash folder all of a sudden becomes empty.

  • Switched to iCloud and now my trash emails are missing

I am missing months of emails in my trash bin. I double checked the Mailbox behavior settings and everything is checked appropriately - to indicate NEVER to delete. I am only available to see the last week's emails that have been put in the trash.
    How do I recover them?

Though nothing was said about the Trash I'm not entirely surprised that migrating from MobileMe to iCloud cleared the Trash. Why on earth did you keep messages in the Trash if you wanted to hang on to them? There will certainly be no way to retrieve them.

How do I stop iCloud from automatically opening email attachments in Firefox?

    Hi
This may have something to do with the "Automatically retrieve invitations from Mail" option being enabled? Click on the iCal Menu > Preferences > Advanced. It may also be the Alarms setting? This is for 10.6 iCal so it may be in a different place for 10.5?

  • Unable to trash Icloud email in Mail app.

A problem has just surfaced: my Icloud email address is suddenly not allowing me to trash mail. I'm getting the message "An error occurred while moving message to mailbox  "(null)".It was working fine until last night. My non-icloud messages are deleting just fine. I have no idea what might have changed in my settings.

Open the iCloud preference pane, uncheck the Mail box, and confirm. The messages will remain on the server. Check the box again and test.
