ICloud enthusiastic checking of Exchange Activesync email

Enabling iCloud on an iPhone or iPad appears to increase the number of connections to the office email which is Microsoft Exchange 2010. This generates thousands more attempts per day of requests logged in the IIS logs compared to non iCloud iOS devices.
For example the table below shows a user with an iPhone and iPad both with iCloud enabled for a private Calendar sync compared to other Apple device users without iCloud enabled.
The left column displays the number of connections in 24 hours taken from IIS Logs:
22882
User with iCloud enabled
864
User without iCloud
792
Another user without iCloud
687
Another user without iCloud
556
Another user without iCloud
537
Another user without iCloud
493
Another user without iCloud
With iCloud turned off - the user's iPhone and iPad resumes to a more normal number of connections logged in IIS.
Why does Calendar sync enabled on iCloud cause so many more connections to Exchange 2010?
The iCloud enabled devices are iPad3C4 and iPhone4C1, both with iOS 6.1.3.
Kind Regards
TimHS

icloud enabled -icloud rules
icloud disabled - exchange rules
why icloud rules are different - no idea
don't like that icloud rules create more sync attempts - feedback apple at www.apple.com/feedback.
it may be just a bug or intentional and the only way to fix if it is a but is to feedback.

  • MS Exchange activesync email doesn't work on my iPhone but works on others

I'm having trouble getting Activesync working for email with our work Exchange server on my 3GS iPhone.
The problem that I have is that the Exchange server appears to authenticate properly during the account setup process, but then it never syncs down any email (or folders).
Other (POP or IMAP) email accounts on the same phone work just fine.
In addition, it had been working fine for this same phone. I bought the 3GS the first day it was available, and it worked fine with the exchange server. It worked fine until recently when I changed my work password. It of course, stopped receiving new email because it didn't have the new password. But when I entered the new password it still didn't receive any new email, and since that time it has no longer received email.
If I use a colleague's 3GS iPhone or my old 2G iPhone I can set them up to sync to my exact same account on the exact same server, and they work just fine. So I know I'm entering the password and server settings correctly.
I checked the mail settings and they appear to be the same between the phones.
I have tried various combinations of deleting and recreating the mail account on my 3GS and powering down, but no luck there.
I've tried removing the mobile devices using the webmail settings.
At this point it appears that there is something wrong specifically with my iPhone.
Any ideas of what might be wrong?
Any ideas of what to try? Is my iPhone defective, time to exchange it at the Apple store?

Ok, I've made a discovery. My email will work if I erase the phone but don't restore my backup.
I used the option under settings->general->reset to "Erase all content and settings" on my iPhone.
This puts the iPhone back into the state where it is waiting to be plugged into iTunes for activation. I plugged in my phone into iTunes, but instead of choosing to restore from backup or setup as a new phone, I instead went into settings and setup my activesync mail account. This is essentially the same as what it would be with a brand new phone.
This worked. My activesync connection pulled down my mail and calendar.
So then I restored my phone from backup, and setup my activesync mail account again. It again didn't work.
So there is something that is being saved in the backup that breaks my iPhone working with activesync MS exchange.
If I don't restore from backup, what will I lose on my phone?
    My pictures/movies
    My application settings/files
Music, contacts and applications should all sync down so I shouldn't lose those.
Anyone else have any other ideas on what I should do based on this new information?

  • Q10, Exchange 2010 ActiveSync - Email will not be deleted on server

    Hey Everyone,
If you have a Q10 with Exchange ActiveSync, can you remove emails on the server using "Delete from Hub and server" option??
I am testing this function both with an ipad and Q10. Emails removed from Ipad are removed from Exchange Server whereas emails removed from Q10 with "Delete from Hub and server" option selected are only removed from Q10 but not on the server.
Is this a broken functionality or are there incorrect settings on the phone?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    -T

the deletes can take a few on my Z30 or Z10
I know a quick delete would be prefered but maybe the OS deems them as not fast needed

  • Windows 8/8.1 devices, BitLocker and Exchange Activesync "Require encryption on device"

Recently I've been testing a change to our Exchange ActiveSync Policy , "Require encryption on device". This works fine for  Windows 8 phones, all iOS devices and some Android. However, W8 tablets with BitLocker on have an issue getting Activesync
    email.
Is BitLocker considered to be insufficient Encryption for an Exchange Activesync policy which enforces: "Require encryption on device".

    Hi dude -d,
"Require encryption on device Select this check box to require encryption on the mobile phone. This increases security by encrypting all information on the mobile phone."
Here is a link for reference of this policy
View or Configure Exchange ActiveSync Mailbox Policy Properties
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123994(v=exchg.141).aspx
Considering this policy is to increase the security by encrypting the device ,there maybe some conflicts here if the the device has been protected by the Bitlocker .This is just my own assumption.
To understand this policy more deeply ,it is recommended to ask for help from our Exchange Forum .They are more familiar with this policy and they may have more resources to help understand this issue .

  • Iphone 3g with Exchange Activesync lackluster battery life

    Hey fellow IPhone people!
I just bought my first Iphone and just returned my first Blackberry Storm in favor of the IPhone's superior UI.
I use Exchange Activesync to synchronize my company email/contacts/calendar with my IPhone. It seems to work well, however, I have noticed that it checks for new mail about every 5 or so seconds while I am in the mail application.
I have the settings set to manual and push for the Fetch of mail, however, it still seems to check for mail every 5-10 seconds.
Given this the battery life is terrible. By mid day my battery is more than half gone and I charge it fully each evening.
Has anyone else experienced this who is actively running Exchange Activesync?
Can this be a settings issue on either the IPhone or on Exchange?
Please advise if you have specific experience with this.
I think either I have a faulty iPhone battery or ??
    Thanks !

There's something stuck in the Calendar sync...! You can check your phone's usage in the Setting-->General-->Usage... You will find the usage is abnormal high once you turn on Calendar sync with exchange. I have the same problem...2.1 didn't fix it. Now, the only thing I can do is turn on Calendar sync. But Contact and Email works fine. I found out this problem when I was doing a international travel...There's non-stop international data roaming communication between iPhone and Exchange which transmitted 100MB data in a morning, cost me US$2,000 !!!

  • Configuring Exchange Activesync on Supervised iPads

I am working on a deployment for a school district.  We are using Apple Configurator to supervise and manage the devices.  Since they are being handed to children under 18, they need to be highly restricted.  They want students to be able to access their email without being able to add other accounts (personal apple IDs, Facebook, YouTube, etc).  I am running into problems with the Exchange Activesync profile.  It prompts for a password, but not a username.  How do I configure this profile in order for students to enter their own email addresses without having access to adding other accounts? Thanks

    Just guessing here...
The calendar is synced to an external service, or most likely more than one of them, that also has a calendar. Yahoo, Gmail, and Hotmail offer such services.
Check out how the phone is being synced to external email services...

  • IPhone/iPad can't forward attachments via Exchange ActiveSync

    We're currently moving from Exchange 2003 SP2 to Exchange 2010 SP1.
Most of our mailboxes are still on EX2003, however most of our services have been moved to EX2010.
Services such as mailflow; EAS; OWA; etc...
A week or two after cutting services over, a lot of our iPhone/iPad users started to experience the problem where they couldn't forward emails that contained attachments from their iPhones. They get a "Cannot Send Mail: An error occurred while delivering this message."
We did some initial testing with .txt; .doc; .pdf and found that most attachments would not go if they were bigger than 100KB.
We checked our EX2010 Exchange ActiveSync Mailbox Policies to see if there was a default maximum attachment size set.
There was none, so we set it for 40MB.
We also updated the refresh interval to 1 hr, however we still can't seem to forward emails that contain attachments.
Any solutions or suggestions would help.
I looked at other posts to try solutions offered there however have been unsuccessful

This is what worked for us:
    Environment:
ActiveSync configured on Exchange 2003 SP2 running on Windows Server 2003 SP2with IIS 6
    Issue:
Email message  with attachment (regardless of attachmentsize) sent  from a mobile device(smartphone, iPhone, iPad, etc.) remains “stuck” in mobile device’s  Outbox, but NOT in Exchange account Outbox
No error message(s) displayed on mobile deviceor on Exchange server
NOTE:NO problems receiving/opening/reading Incoming emails  that have attachments  on a mobile device
    Fix:
Go to the %SystemRoot%\Temp( WINNT\Temp or  WINDOWS\Temp)directory on the Exchange server:
Click on the Security tab and add Authenticated Users
    Grant AuthenticatedUsers the following permissions:
    Modify
    Read & Execute
    List Folder Contents

  • Exchange ActiveSync New Feature

I just noticed something new with exchange activesync. Now you have the option for push to any folder on you exchange server, it's no longer limited to just the Inbox. This is a nice feature enhancement.
I also noticed, even though I do not sync contacts nor do I send exchange emails from my iPhone (I used to, but all of my old contacts at my former employer are stuck as auto-suggested email address and cannot be deleted), it seems to be suggesting email address from everone in the GAL (or perhaps it is suggesting email address from anyone who I have ever received an email from).

This is the ONLY feature stopping me migrating to iphone from my windows mobile 6.5
It is a MUST have for me.
    1)  If you forget your phone at home you can check you email at work and get your SMS messages
    2)  I have no GSM coverage at office.  I can leave my phone at and upper level desk and still get my messages via woek email and take calls bia bluetooth.
    3) Can send SMS from desktop outlook client with full keyboard and they are send by mobile phone.
    Looking forward to this feature...

  • Problem with Exchange ActiveSync-Kontakt

    Hi all,
all the contacts with setting "Exchange ActiveSync-Kontakt" (to Microsoft-Outlook) are not-usable anymore on my PC, because the email-addresse on my PC now appear with double quotation marks,
    i.e.
    "[email protected]"
    instead of
    [email protected]
and when I send emails from my PC, they just remain in folder Outbox, but never get sent
Any idea how to circumvent/fix this ?
    Thanks&greetings
    Brigitte
P.S.: apart from that - I just love my new mobile!!!

    Hi!
I asked about other forms of synchronisation because sometimes people set up an app to synchronise contacts using USB cable which is in direct conflict with Exchange.
When you open contact on your phone is the email prefixed with ' char too?
Also verify in your Outlook the same. Open Outlook, go into Contacts view and check contact details.
I'm using Z1 and Z2 with Office 365 Exchange without such problem.
You can also check Outlook / Folders view and there should be something like "Suggested contacts" if you are using Outlook 2010 or 2013. This is a cache folder for autocomplete addresses. I had few times exact problem like you with few addresses prefixed by ' but it was related to the outlook itself not the phone.

  • NOKIA E6 "Invalid Exchange activesync credentials....

    Dear All,
After upgrade soft to Symbian Belle I can to to sync my company Exchange email account. I`m using the same credential us before with Symbian Anna. I receive only "Invalid Exchange activesync credentials. Check credential settings".
    How to solve this problem.

    Hi cenjar,
Thanks for your post and welcome to the forum.
The error message "Invalid Exchange activesync credentials. Check credential settings" means that your security credentials have changed. This is most likely the password of your Exchange account. Please check with your administrator if you're not sure what the new credentials are.

  • Exchange ActiveSync really the only mail option in...

    Another 808 question...
Is Exchange really the only mail option?  I've been able to sync my Gmail account and grab all my contacts (which is awesome, btw).  But then I try to create another mailbox.  I just want to set up my corporate email (a regular IMAP account), but  I see "Exchange ActiveSync" is the only option.  Nothing about other providers or anything else like on other Nseries phones.  I choose it anyway thinking it will bypass it, but it simply says:  "Maximum number of mailboxes chosen...please delete existing mailbox".
Do I really need to purchase a 3rd party app just to get a second mailbox?  What am I missing here?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi micahd,
Thanks for your feedback and welcome to the forum.
When you have a SIM inserted you should see all mailbox options when you go to MENU>Mail>New mailbox
Besides Exchange Active Sync you should see several preset options depending on your region and the 'other' options which allows for a manual install.
If you do not see these options I would suggest you soft reset the Nokia 808, this will reset default settings and not remove any personal data. Dial *#7780# followed by the (optional) security code 12345 and check again after the reset finishes.
If this does not resolve this you may try a hard reset which will remove all personal data from the phone's internal memory, so make a backup in Nokia Suite first (Tools/Backup). Then dial *#7370# again if asked followed by the  security code 12345.
If after this reset you still do not see the additional options please visit a Nokia Care Point for further assistance.
Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

  • Exchange ActiveSync Problem

    Hi,
since yesterday I have a problem with Exchange Ative Sync account on my Z30 / OS Version 10.2.1.2141.
Out of nowere noticed lost connection.
I have deleted and tried to setup again.
After I put all informations (user/pass/domain/server etc...as I did many times before), I have a small window with "Accounts / Checking for supported services and policy information" but in the end I get " Accounts / The Settings for your account are incorrect. Change your settings and try again".
It's my personal phone, used for work e-mail.
My organisation uses Ipones and also Android with Touchdown as e-mail client.
I put also Touchdown on my Blackberry and is working !!
I am not doing any additional setting than I am doing for Blackberry Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync setup (setup is almost similar : user, pass, domain, server etc...).
Any advice about where could be the problem with standard ActiveSync setup ?

That's the catch. Your IT department controls the server you're trying to connect to. You have to check with them to troubleshoot this issue. I have a personal q10 using activesync for work email. At one time it wasn't supported. They enabled something and it worked.
