ICloud for a family of 4

We are trying to come up with a hassle-free sync solution for 4 iOS5 devices in the family (4 iOS5, apple TV, 2 PCs, 1 Mac).  Please comment if you think it can be done better.
1. Mail, calendar, contacts, and notes: We are not using iCloud here
Since 2.5 years we have been using a shared family email account with calendar, addressbook, notes.  Works like a charm -- as soon as one device adds/updates a contact -- all others have the latest.  Calendar entries show on all devices instantly so that family engagements are never double booked and grocery list (and other notes) are instantly updated across the devices.  Hassle free, hands free, as it should be.  Any employers email accounts (email, calendar, contacts, notes) are setup the way employers' systems dictate.  Any additional personal emails are also setup the same way - no cloud needed there as things are already backed up at source.
2. Music, Apps, Photos, Documents: Using iCloud here - Our questions are here
We need to share these among 4 iOS5 devices + PCs + Apple TV.  Considering the following arrangement:
1. Use single existing Apple ID that runs iTunes on the PCs - populate that in iTunes and AppStore on all 4 iOS5 and apple TV.
2. Set up only one 5GB free account and enter that information into all 4 iOS5 devices + PCs.  The devices and computers will hopefully share the photos and documents.  We miss out on the free 5GB on 3 devices, but things work seamlessly.  Since email etc. is out of the way -- 5 GB may just be enough for a Photos and documents.
Questions are:
What will this mean for iMessage? for facetime? Impact on any other features of iPhone 4S?
Is any better arrangement possible?
3. Bookmarks and reminders: We dont really have a need to share these across the 4 iOS 5 devices.

Hello Tejwanir,
I don't if this is a better/worse setup. In my family we are also 4, and are using a lot of iOS 5 devices, Macs and one Apple TV. Everything works fine, also with iCloud.
Everybody has got a free @me adress you can get easily now with iOS 5. Everybody in the family is using his own @me account to:
log in his own iCloud to manage Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Bookmarks, Notes, Photostream, Documents, Find my iPhone, Backup and Mail if needed.
setup Facetime on every device
setup iMessage on every device
create maybe a Game Center account
Then we have an Apple ID or iTunes Account which everybody uses to:
log in to Settings>Store on an iOS device, to purchases content
setup Home Sharing
log in to iTunes Store on a computer
maybe use iTunes match

  • ICloud for a family account does not work

We could not use iCloud for our family for multiple computers and devices with one [email protected] The details..
    These are our devices -
Two iPhone 4's (me and my wife)
    One iPhone 3G (my daughter)
    MacBook Pro
    MacPro
    Mac Mini
    iPad2
We want to use one [email protected] account for iTunes
To use iCloud on all my iPhones with one [email protected] account, all our contacts, calendars, photos will be downloaded to all devices. The problems are - Why would my calendar, contacts and emails show up on my wife's and daughters iPhones
The reason to use one [email protected] account for all computers, iPhones and iPads are - any iTunes purchases need to be available for the entire family to enjoy. If we used different @mac.com accounts, we will have to purchase the same song or iBook multiple times. This defeats the main reason for iCloud.
I am shocked that Apple did not envision this problem with one family account. If they do have a solution, I could not find it. I called technical support as well as go to the local genius bar. They all suggested getting different @mac.com accounts for each iPhone device. This is counterproductive and defeats the purpose of one ecosystem that Steve Jobs always preached.
    Any suggestions..

You can use one Apple ID in itunes for all your purchases.
You can also use different IDs in iCloud so that each ID keeps whatever devices are registered to that ID are kept in sync.  If you don't want you wife's and your calendars to be identical, then you need different IDs.  Again, you can all keep the same Apple ID for your iTunes purchases.

  • ICloud and selective downloads (iCloud for a Family 2!)

I haven't yet updated to iOS 5 because I don't know how to manage our account for a Family, and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Presently, we have a single iTunes account linked to my desktop Apple. On it are my wife and I and 2 children. We all download what we want (kid's ipads are age restricted and they have to ask before buying anything! Our account is linked only to iTunes cards, not a credit card!) and I manually synch all devices with the desktop about once a week or so.
This is working fine, as you can choose what content goes onto each device when you sync.... we don't all want the same apps, books, music etc., obviously.
But... is that how it works for iCloud? I am worried that if something is downloaded on one device, it automatically appears on the others. That wouldn't work for us....I don't want what the kids download, and I don't want some of what I download on the kids devices.
I realise that one way around it is to have 4 separate accounts... but then I'd end up paying 4 times for anything that we do want to share ( a song, an app, etc.)
Have I misunderstood iCloud? Can i configure it as I do now? Or can I upgrade to iOS 5 and simply choose not to use iCloud? I'd try it out but won't be able to revert to iOS 4 if it goes wrong!
    Any help appreciated.....
PS... I did post a similar topic a while ago, and got some help, but I've hopefully now clarified my issue.

I cloud is for Mail, contacts, calendars, ect.  It reall has nothing to do with I tunes.  In the settings, you can turn off syncing apps, music, and books, for each device.  That will keep all apps, music, and books to syncing to each device.  You will have to manually check what apps your want synced or not in iTunes.

  • How to configure iCloud for a family

WIth the move from MobileMe to iCloud, I am challenged with how to best configure multiple Apple ID's, Mobile Me legacy accounts, and iCloud accounts for a family of four.
    Intentions:
    - Have the ability to unify family purchased music, movies, apps, as well as photos into one place
    - All family members have the ability to access above media library
    - Share this media in a way that is low maintenance and more secure than sharing with friends
    Pre-iCloud:
    - A single Apple ID ([email protected]) that I use for Apple store purchasing, this community, etc.
    - A single MobileMe account ([email protected]) that until now I have used on all iOS and Mac devices INCLUDING MY WIFE AND KIDS (oops?)
    Since iCloud:
    - Setup the [email protected] as an iCloud account (had no legacy data)
    - Migrated [email protected] from MobileMe to iCloud account
    - Setup [email protected] as a new iCloud account
    - Setup [email protected] as a new iCloud account
    - Setup [email protected] as a new iCloud account
The trouble is, I have no way to 'link' [email protected], wife@, boy@, and girl@ to do any sharing that [email protected] or [email protected] couldn't also access.
What's the "Apple way" of setting up a family in iCloud?

For this very reason, I switched my family calendars over to Google several months ago.  I have a family of 4 as well and my children are fairly young, so I wanted them to be able to see my calendar without risk of them accidentally deleting something from it.  I was able to set up a separate account for each family member and then "delegate" calendar permissions to other family members.  My wife and I can update all four calendars.  My children can each update their own calendar, and can see the other calendars, but can't update them.  None of the calendars are visible to the public.
I hope this helps you with that one issue.  I wish I could answer all of your questions, but I can't.  I'm struggling with how to best manage a family of four in this new environment myself and will keep an eye on your thread here in hopes of finding answers to my own questions.  I also started my own thread before finding yours.  I'll link to it in case any helpful information turns up there:

  • Multiple apple ID s with Icloud for a family

My husband and I each have an IPhone and we share an IPad. Do we have to have the same apple ID in order for the Icloud to connect all of the devices<(including his IPod).

You must use the same Apple ID on all devices for all of the downloads and content to sync across all devices. If you each have your own Apple ID - you cannot automatically download content from your phone to his or the other way around. If you share the same ID - you can.

  • HT204053 can you have multiple apple id's for the family but we all use the same iCloud?

Can you have multiple apple id's for the family members but we all us the same iCloud account?

You'll have to have an ID you all share in order to have a shared iCloud account. It would be sensible for each person to have their own ID and their own iCloud account for email and their own data (each would be on their own computer/iOS device or user account on a Mac) and then have a common account which everyone would sign into in System Preferences>Mail, Contacts and Calendars to access shared data.
You don't want to be all using the email in a common account - if people are using email aliases remember these can't be detached from the account and transferred to another one. Having all your emails mixed up together can be somewhat impracticable.

  • How do I get separate iCloud accounts for each family members device and still share iTunes?

how do I get separate iCloud's for each family members iPhone, iPod and iPad and still share iTunes?

Have everyone share the same iTunes store ID, but use separate IDs for iCloud.  The ID you use for iCloud does not have to be the same as the ID you use for the iTunes & App store.

  • How do I set up iCloud in Lion for a family sharing 1 Apple ID?

There are three people in our family.  Mom...Dad...Daughter.  Up till now, we have used 1 Apple ID and password for iTunes Store and Mac App Store purchases.  We used MY e-mail address for the Apple ID.  I installed Lion 7.2 on my daughter's MBP yesterday.  (My wife and I are still using 10.6.8) When it came to setting up iCloud on her MBP I thought I needed to use the previously mentioned Apple ID and password.  Much to my surprise, when I finished I noticed her Safari bookmarks had become MY bookmarks and her Address Book had become populated with all the entries in MY Address Book!  Her login picture also changed from a nice picture of her to a picture of her bald dad!!!  Who knows what other surprises are in store for us.  We just bought 3 iPhone 4S's and I am reluctant to set them up for fear of finding all 3 with my Address Book entries, Safari Bookmarks, etc. if I use this single Apple ID again.  BUT, I do want to continue using our current Apple ID and password for family iTunes Store and Mac App Store purchases (music, apps, books, etc.).  Is there a solution to this?  What do I do?

I apologize for semi-hijacking the topic of this thread from "Multiple iCould IDs with single AppleID. Possible?"
Perhaps my reasoning for doing this was flawed, but here it is.  That thread was started back in June when the real details of iCloud were somewhat conjecture.  It is now about 14 pages long.  There are some recent posts to the thread, but for the life of me I can't tease a solution to my question above out of them.  I just may not be reading carefully enough.  If so, I apologize.
What I am looking for is more of a STEP BY STEP guide to setting up iOS 5 and OS 10.7.2 for a family in my situation with my needs.  I think I do represent a fair segment of users.
If the monitors of this forum think my thread should be tack on to the end of the above mentioned forum...by all means do so.
Honestly, If Steve were alive today I think he would not be happy with this situation faced by Apple customers.  Steve always said his guiding mantra for his products was..."It just works."  I honestly believe he meant that.  But, with regard to this iCould business...for normal pedestrian users like myself,  I would have to say, "It just doesn't work."

So I basically won't run into any trouble? I
There should be no issues. Its designed to work like that.  You don't change Apple IDs just because you get a new device.

Is there any chance that the phones can fall out of sync?
Unlikely. But nothing is impossible.   Though I don;t see how that would happen. As long as both are signed into the Same Apple ID / iCloud Account they will be N'Sync. (Bad Joke)

If I get a message or buy an app or take a photo on the iPhone 5, how do I get those things onto the iPhone 6?
If you buy an App, you have 2 ways to get it to the iPhone6: If Automatic Downloads is enabled in Settings->iTunes & App Store, it will automatically download to the iPhone 6 when you buy it on the 5 and vice versa if you buy it on the 6, it will download to the 5.
Alternatively, you can simply go to the App Store App->Updates->Purchased and look for the App there and download it. Purchased Apps will not require payment again. i.e They'll be free to download to the iPhone 6 once purchased.
SMS Messages will sync over using Continuity as long as they are on the same Wifi network. Otherwise, restoring the iPhone 5 backup to the iPhone 6 will transfer all messages received up until the backup was made onto the iPhone 6.
Images, can be transferred either through Photo Stream
My Photo Stream FAQ - Apple Support
Or any Cloud service you want such as Dropbox, or One Drive.
    mannyace wrote:
Also, something i forgot to ask initially: Should I update the iPhone 5 to iOS 8 first or does that not matter?
If you want the Continuity features as explained above you need to update the iPhone 5 to iOS 8. Otherwise its not all that important.

how can i create multiple icloud accounts for my family members

Thanks...  I appreciate the reply.  Since I wrote the previous email, I actually went and changed my apple id (the main id) and the documentation I looked at said iCloud will set mail up automatically(?)...  I had it working before.
Also, I tried to manually set up the ID via the Mail Accounts screen(s) and I can't figure out what my server information is...  Pop or Imap?  What's the outgoing server and the incoming server?
I typically have never had problems setting up mail accounts (in apple mail) with no problem.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks in advance!

  • How do you Set up apple ID / iCloud for family?

I have an Apple ID along with an iCloud account.  My wife also has her own ID and iCloud account.  We have two young kids that are starting to enjoy games, movies,  music, etc...  Currently we have 3 iPhones, iPad, an iMac , and Apple TV.
Both my wife and I have been purchasing apps separately but would like to share the apps with all of the devices. (We are both currently using the same music and photo libraries).  Even with a family account it is important that my wife and I maintain our own contacts and mail and iMessages.
I like the idea of setting up a new Apple ID but get a little confused when it comes to iCloud.
Should I create a new Apple ID for the family and use one of the current iCloud accounts for the family purchases? (or get a third iCloud account?)
If we go with this new shared account idea, is it possible to still load some of the apps that we have already purchased, or do we have to start fresh and re-buy the apps that we like under the new account?
Seeing the majority of apps have been purchased under my Apple ID, it may make sense to use my iCloud for all of the purchases but don't want to share mail etc with my wife or kids?!?  I'm confused.
Thanks in advance for you help...
    TY

I was having severe trouble with this myself until finally I decided to call Apple and spent an hour on the phone with a senior tech advisor. We finally figured out how to get it to set up Apple ID Authorization.
To do this First go into System Preferences>Sharing, then make sure screen sharing is turned on. From there, there is a list of authorized users with plus and minus buttons in the bottom left. Click the plus to add a new user, and then click New Person in the new window. After that a final window appears asking for User Name and Password. Simply put the name of the person you are adding with any password and click Create. From here go back to System Preferences and click Users & Groups. In this window you should see the new Sharing Only user. Click on them and set an Apple ID. After that test the new Sharing User by having the owner of the Apple ID connect to screen sharing or File sharing from their Mac. Keep in mind this only works Lion to Lion and they have to have their Apple ID set to their user on their own machine.
    Good luck!

  • Setting up iCloud Drive for a family is a nightmare!

Setting up iCloud Drive for a family is a nightmare!  I have spent the last two hours trying to figure out a smart way to make it work!  First off, even though the name is similar, iCloud Drive seems to be a very different thing than Google Drive or Dropbox.  There is no "sharing" option.  This is what is so frustrating at the moment.
My family has used one main Apple ID for years.  I recently upgraded the iCloud space so my daughter could sync her iPhone to the cloud.  So, I updated to Yosemite and iCloud Drive and REALLY LIKED many aspects of the new system.  However, in order to make many of the new features work, like having the text messages come to the computer, and having the phone calls (which are linked to Facetime) come to the computer I am faced with all kinds of dilemmas.  My wife and I have two Macbooks.  In order for her to get her phone calls forwarded to her Macbook she needs to have her phone number AND e-mail address that's associated with the specific iCloud Account that her computer is logged into.  We have mainly been logging in to the same Apple ID.  In order for her to access her own phone vs. mine she will have to log her computer in to a different Apple ID - but that will also mean a new iCloud Drive.
I think these new features in Yosemite are great - but they are geared towards individual people.  There have been many articles written about how to deal with Apple IDs within a family.  There need to be some updated articles on how to deal with iCloud Drive and a family.  To me it's just way, way too complicated. It seems like it doesn't "just work" anymore.

It will depend on how much data has to be moved to iCloud Drive. 30 minutes is a long time, but not unbelievable.
