ICloud for families sharing an iTunes account

Our family shares the same iTunes account so we can use the Home Sharing feature for music.  However, now with iCloud we are all on the same account and being forced to share contacts, calendars, etc. even though we don't want to.  Can we set up separate iCloud accounts for each of us and still keep the same iTunes that we share?

YES! Same issue. HELP! I've created a nightmare.
We have 2 iPhones and several computers. The iPhones are mine and my wife's. I selected backup to iCloud on the two computers that are used by myself and my wife, respectively.
I selected backup to iCloud and sync on mine. I did the same for hers---on a separate computer (her computer) with her iTunes that she uses exclusively for her iPhone. Why would I think that Apple would intuitively understand that these were SEPARATE devices?
My contacts and her contacts all became a jumble. I've got 1,000+ and she's got a fraction of that. I wanted to remove my contacts that were merged into hers. (I don't really care about her contacts in mine----what's another 100?)
I saw that on her phone, in the iCloud section, I could delete the "previously merged contacts". "Previously merged", to me, meant MY contacts that got merged into hers. It also made sense to me that the word "previous" meant her contacts would remain intact on her iPhone. NOT SO. When I hit the delete key, ALL her contacts disappeared! Yikes! I'm in the dog house big time.
"OK". I thought...there's the iPhone backup. So, I switched the radio button from "Backup to iCloud" to what it was: "Backup to this computer". When I hit restore, the verbage makes it seem that I'm going to completely bring her phone back to a Factory Restoration----not a restoration of the last backup! What the heck??!!
APPPPPPPPLE? What's up? Help. If I'm in hot water---so are you! Tell me how to fix this, please!

  • Is there any way to have multiple user names/accounts on Icloud for families sharing an apple account?

MY husband just got a iphone 5s last night, I have an iphone 5. We sharean apple ID.  When he backed up to icloud he got all of my pictures and contact numbers. Is there any way to create seperate icloud accounts so when  one of us back up we are only backing up our own data??

You both need, & should use different Apple ID's for iCloud, iMessage & FaceTime. You both can continue to use the same Apple ID for iTunes content.
Your husband needs an Apple ID for iMessage, FaceTime & iCloud.
The Apple ID needs to be a verified email address. Once you have an email address, that can be verified, go here & create the ID:
    https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/wa/createAppleId
Then on his phone, turn off Contacts, Calendars, etc. for iCloud. You'll be prompted to keep the data or delete it from the phone, then turn off iMessage, FaceTime & delete the iCloud account...Settings>iCloud...scroll down...delete account. Then, setup iCloud using the new Apple ID, turn on iMessage & Facetime.
This will have no affect on the ID you both share for iTunes content, & you can continue to do so.

  • How to set up icloud for family and one itunes account

I just got a new disk drive in my MACbook (now upgraded to Mountain Lion) so starting from scratch with itunes.   With 4 IOS devices in the family and only one itunes account, I would like to figure out how to backup every device to itunes.    I was able to save old itunes data on a jump drive, but did not have a Time Machine backup so I am literally starting from scratch and want to do it right.
I need to get data from IOS devices to itunes(via ICLOUD?)  before I hook up device to "new" disk drive on MAC.
I am scared I will loose the data on the devices when I hook them up to the new Mac.  Any help would be appreciated...
Can we each have separate Icloud IDs and still have one Apple ID we use for Itunes account?

"Can we each have separate Icloud IDs and still have one Apple ID we use for Itunes account?"
Yes, that's the suggested way of doing it.
As for starting from scratch - you need to decide which Apple ID to use for the mac.  If each member of the family uses the mac, then set up a seperate account for each and use the Apple ID (the one used for iCloud) to sign into icloud.  Use the common ID for itunes purchases.  I'd suggest first syncing devices to icloud to get whatever data is important (contacts, events, ...) saved.  When on the mac you connect to an iCloud account, the data (just synced from a device) will come down to the mac (for that account).
Tell us what "data" you want to get to the new Mac?

  • TS4097 we have multiple users in our family and multiple devices all sharing one itunes account.  i think we are all synced to one icloud account and it is a nightmare....contacts lost, text messags showing up on multiple devises etc.  how do we fix this?

We have our family sharing one itunes account.  we have 3 iphones, 2 macbook airs, 2 ipads and 1 mac.  I am not sure how we even got started on the icloud but somehow we did and everything is a mess.  The ipads are showing the text messages, the contacts are all combined, the apps that my duaghter downloads are appearing on all devices.  how do we fix this so contacts are not shared, messages are not shared and apps are not automatically synced to all devises?

You have two different issues going on.  You are getting each other's messages because you are sharing the Same Apple ID for iMessage.  This can be corrected by going to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive on add the devices and doing one of the following:
Either uncheck the email address shown under "You can be reached by iMessage at" on all of your devices; or
If you want to continue to receive iMessages at this email address on one of your devices, on all of the other ones tap the Apple ID at the top, sign out, then sign back in using a different Apple ID (so all devices will be using a different Apple ID for iMessage).  Note: you can continue to share an Apple ID for purchasing from the iTunes and App stores.  It does not need to be the same as the ID you are using for iMessage, FaceTime and other services.
The second issue is that you are sharing the same iCloud account on your devices.  When you do this any data you sync with the shared iCloud account such as contacts is merged and will appear on all devices connected to the account.  To fix this you both need to have separate iCloud accounts (you can continue to share the same Apple ID for purchasing from the iTunes and app stores).
First decide which device(s) will be keeping the current iCloud account.  On the one(s) that will be changing accounts, if you have any photos in photo stream that in your camera roll or backed up somewhere else that you want to keep on the device(s), save these to the camera roll by opening the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tapping Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll.
Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  (This will only delete the account from this device, not from iCloud.  The device(s) that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.)  When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On [iDevice].  Next, set up a new iCloud account using a separate Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom).  Then turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to the new account.  Repeat this process for all the devices that you need to migrate to new accounts.
When finished, to un-merge the data in your accounts you will have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete the data you don't want (such as deleting the other person's contacts from your account, and vice versa).

  • My dad and I shared an iTunes account for years and now I'm getting my own, how can I keep my music and apps?

My dad and I shared an iTunes account for years and now I'm getting my own, how can I keep my music and apps? I'm worried that I won't have any ability to access my apps and music. We have our itunes separated on different computers, so I have all of my stuff separated from his, but I don't know how to put them in my new account.

Well... there really isn't any fully legal way to do this.
The simplest solution is to continue sharing the same iTunes purchasing acct, but create different ones for iCloud (assuming that's why you needed to do the split).
Slightly less kosher: Burn AUDIO CD's, of the music then copy them back to your new account.
BE sure to do this from original acount, To keep the music info, you'll  copy over the CDDB file (in prefs somewhere) - since this maintains the data of CDs that you've had in library.... (it isn't carried over onto a user created CD.)

  • A family of 5, have new iphone 4s phones.Because we shared an itunes     account previously, now when installing the new phones, it does not allow us to update to individual itunes accounts.  How do we change the accounts for each phone installation?

A family of 5, have new iphone 4 s phones.
Because we shared the itunes account previously, on installation of the new devices, the computer does not recognise individual itunes accounts.
So all 5 devices are sharing the same itunes account!!!
How do we set up new accounts on each individual phone?

The iTunes stores in different countries are entirely separate.  You can only use an iTunes store credit in the country in with it was created and purchased content cannot be shared across countries.  Family sharing groups must be country-specific, using iTunes store credits for purchases only within that country, and sharing purchases that were made in that country.  You can contact iTunes store support for more details on these restrictions here: https://www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html.

    No.
One of you create a new AppleID and one use the existing AppleID.
But you can still use the items in each iTunes library.
Create separate computer logins for each of you.
This will give you each your own data. Contacts, calendars, photos, etc. (and your own iTunes library).

  • I have been sharing my iTunes account with my kids...now they are getting older and want to have their own accounts, how do I share the songs I purchased for them on my account with them on their new accounts?

I have been sharing my iTunes account with my kids...now they are getting older and want to have their own accounts, how do I share the songs I purchased for them on my account with them on their new accounts?  Is there a way to transer from my main account their new accounts?  And can I share music from my account with them?

You can't currently transfer content from one account to another account. As long as the tracks are on the computer's iTunes that they use/sync to, and your account is authorised on that iTunes, then they should be able to continue to use them.

No. Purchase always remain with the account they were purchased with.

In order to continue to play and sync the music you purchased with your old account, you'll need to authorize your new computer/iTunes library to do so.  You can do this by choosing Store -> Authorize This Computer and then entering in your old account credentials.
That's all you should need to.  Then just create your own account and start purchasing and using it the same you have with the old one.

The old Apple ID (presumably your dads) owns those songs and your new Apple ID does not.  However, your dad can authorize your iD to use the songs by going to Store > Authorize This Computer from your iTunes menu and entering his Apple ID and password.

    Hi Dennis,
If you want to share iTunes purchases between multiple accounts in the same family you could use Family Sharing.

  • Want separate i Cloud accounts/storage while sharing one iTunes account

My husband and I want to keep sharing our iTunes account for music, apps, podcasts, etc. But we want separate iCloud storage for notes, contacts, documents & data, Safari bookmarks, and so on. His iPhone and my iPod Touch and iPad mini are signed into his account, including his iCloud. I just set up a separate iCloud account for me on my iPod Touch using a different email address. But I cannot figure out how to sign out of his iCloud and into mine on my iPod and iPad.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Yes that will work, enter the iTunes Store details into itunes on the computer and into settings > Store on your iOS devices in all cases, enter your iCloud Sync ID into system preferences > iCloud on the computer and settings > iCloud on iOS devices as required for each iCloud ID.

  • My husband and I had been sharing an iTunes account, which resulted in his apps and music being synced to my iPhone and mine to his. . . very annoying.  So I created a new iTunes account, but now no devices show up in the sidebar so I can't sync my phone.

My husband and I had been sharing an iTunes account, which meant that when he synced his iPhone, all his apps and music appeared on mine as well, and vice versa.  This was annoying, so I created my own account and have changed the Apple id on my phone.  However, when I try to sync it on iTunes, no devices at all show up in the sidebar.  What am I doing wrong?

Whenever a menu choice is grayed out, that is because you have Restrictions turned on in Settings.  Be sure to turn it off.
You are confusing an itunes store account with an icloud account.  You two can continue using the same ID for itunes (thus sharing purchased music, apps, etc.), but you really should have separate accounts (different IDs) for icloud, since an account is intended for one user to keep his/her devices in sync.
To create a new icloud account, go to
    http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
Then go to Settings>icloud and scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Delete Account.  (have restrictions turned off)  That will disconnect the device from the account but will not delete data in icloud or other devices.  Then sign in using the new ID.
