ICloud isn't ready yet for me..how about you?

iCloud is becoming that "thing" that has everyone excited abou the next best thing in computing...however, we are still working and living in a real world.
iCloud for Windows. Not compatible with Windows XP. Epic fail. XP has the largest install base on the planet, yet Apple chose to not support it in iCloud. Because of issues with Vista and Win7, alot of companies(mine included) are still on XP and not likely to change soon. Again, EPIC fail.
Documents. Only will sync Pages documents? Can't upload other file types we may want to access along with iWork. Over promised and under-delivered. I can use Dropbox or Box.net regardless of file type.
Photos. Shares them on the iOS devices but where can I show them to someone while on the web browser? Oh, I can't. Guess I'll keep Picasa.
Calendar-Unless you are all Mac or Mac with WinVista or 7, then you're out of luck unless you want to manually manage all of your appointments by import and export of the ICS files. No thanks. While I was hoping to move my calendar off of the Exchange server at work, it can't happen just yet.
Mail. I jumped in too quickly. What happens when I reach my 5GB limit of docs and email? I either delete some or pony up the $$$ for more space. As a GMail user who jumped to Me.com, I'm going back to GMail.
I am truly disappointed in how iCloud has been talked up to be the next big thing(and it is to some), yet getting into the nitty gritty, it really doesn't fit well with the general masses of potential users. Apple is making things harder than necessary and in that, will lose potential future-users because of the lack of XP support.
Am I missing something here? If so, please enlighten me.

Thanks for your opinion. It's clear that the iPad is not for you, though I'm not quite clear on why you created an account here just to say so.
As to the iBooks app, SirBlue is correct; that is planned for the iPhone and iPod touch in the upcoming OS 4.
Have a great day.

  • Me love the new 4, even after standing in line for hours, how about you?

i got it! (after multiple hours of line standing at valley fair mall. Santa Clara, CA.) -Apple was great about it though they catered the lines with Cheesecake factory delivering us with rations, such as Cheescake, Pizza, potstickers, lemonaide and Dreyers Ice Cream.
Any Ways, Its Delightful & worth the wait.
synched up to the Wi/Fi and its jamming.
    what do u think?

I live in a smaller town of about 28,000 and i got to our local Walmart store at 5:00 Am, I was 4th in line and they only had 7 units... They started activation at 8:00 and besides some complication in SIM activation that took about 30 mins to fix at my local AT&T store im running good and loving it... Im glad i didnt have to wait too long in line... lucky i guess
Plus no service issues, i get full bars most of the time.

Is there a way to stop it from updating from 28 to 29 every time I restart my computer? 29 just isn't ready yet. My fix is reinstalling 28 but it's a pain to do every single time.

    Perfect! Thanks for the solution.

  • When buying an Ipod Touch, just for music, how do you gauge which capacity machine you need?

When choosing an ipod touch just for music, how do you gauge which capacity you need?

Well, you'll be able to see how much material you already have by looking at the bottom of the iTunes window (eg "2000 songs, 2GB" or whatever). Then you can gauge whether that represents about as much as you expect to have in the near future, with a little headroom, or if you think you will dramatically increase that amount, either through ripping CDs, or by purchasing downloads.
Calculate a 4-minute song in AAC format / 256k as being 10MB. A 128k track would be around 5MB. Most MP3 tracks will generally be a little smaller for the same time length, but better to give yourself more room than you think you'll need.
    So for the 8GB iPod - 800 tracks at 256k, or 1600 at 128k.
    32GB: 3200 @ 256k or 6400 @ 128k.
    64GB: 6400 @ 256k or 13000 @ 128k.
Current tracks from iTunes Store are 256kb/s. Bitrate for tracks you rip yourself are set using iTunes Preferences.
    Hope that helps.

The Palm Desktop is available to download from the Palm site:
    http://www.palm.com/us/support/macintosh/mac_desktop.html
though this doesn't list the Clie devices and you may need to check which version you should be using. The Desktop will run on 10.4.
The 'Apple' key is the Command key.
You may need USB Overdrive - a useful program - unless the mouse comes with a Mac driver (some Miscrosoft mice do). Apple's Might Mouse will work fine.
USB overdrive usefully allows you to assign the same mouse click to do different things in different programs.

Pages for ipad2 - how do you get text to wrap around the contours of a picture?  Not the simple square wrap, but I saw text following the contours of a picture of a bike wheel at the Apple store demo

    Sjazbec,
    Thanks for the reply.
I did read the help and went through the tutorial - the butterfly text wrap (and the wrap around the curved contour of the bicycle wheel at the Apple store) is the reason I am asking this question.  I don't know how to use one of my own pictures and tell Pages what contour to wrap around.  Is there some additional image editing software that I need to "creatively crop" one of my own pictures, so that Pages will be able to wrap around that contour?
    Thanks / Danke!!

  • Facetime failing on connect. OS 10.7.5 how about you?

Facetime failing on connect. OS 10.7.5 how about you?

Judging by all the posts on the forum, there seems to be an issue at Apple's end, although they have made no announcement on their status page. Some users have reported that Apple is aware of the issue. You can leave feedback for Apple at the link below.

  • TS4006 icloud isn't in my system preferences, how can i get it?

icloud isn't in my system preferences. only mobile me, which when i click on brings me to the icloud webpage that tells me how to set up icloud. step 2 is to locate it in system preferences, which it is not there, only mobile me. and thus begins the cycle again.

The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.2 (Mountain Lion preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is non non-functional - MobileMe closed In July 2012 and you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
You can set Snow Leopard up to access the email on an existing account which you have set up on a compliant device (you cannot open an iCloud account on Pre-Lion Macs), and you may be able to sync iCal using an unsupported (and possibly unreliable) hack, but no other facilities will work.
This page outlines the limited use you can make of an existing iCloud account with Snow Leopard:
    http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudSL.html
To make proper use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Leopard or Snow Leopard, provided it meets the requirements.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
To purchase it you will have to ring Apple at the number given at the bottom left of this page.
The requirements for Mountain Lion are listed here:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).

  • My iCloud id is an @me address. How do you change it?

How do you change an iCloud id?

    Hey there cehgoherd,
It sounds like you would like to update your Apple ID email address.
This article should help you get that done:
Apple ID: Changing your Apple ID
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5621
Go to My Apple ID (appleid.apple.com), click "Manage your Apple ID", and sign in.
If you have two-step verification turned on, you'll be asked to send a verification code to the trusted device associated with your Apple ID. If you are unable to receive messages at your trusted device, follow the guidelines for what to do if you can't sign in with two-step verification.
In the "Apple ID and Primary Email Address section," click Edit.
Enter the email address you want to use, then click Save Changes. Apple will send a verification email to that address.
Open the email from Apple, then click Verify Now in the email.
When the My Apple ID page opens, sign in with your renamed Apple ID.
If you have two-step verification turned on, you'll be asked to send a verification code to the trusted device associated with your Apple ID.
After you see a message indicating that verification is complete, remember to update all of the features and services that you use with your Apple ID.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • For the ones that use Muse as their main tool to build websites for clients, how do you win them over? (+bonus question)

Couple times a year I always get insanely interested in Adobe Muse. I've used it before, then I got even more interested when all the new in browser editing features rolled out. The idea seemed nice, but I was very disappointed when I noticed it was really only text and images that you can edit. I hope this is not an actual argument when talking things over with a client, but how do you win your client over if he asks "can I edit the videos on the site? can I edit x?, etc" Which would probably then lead to "Why should I use you when I can just use a website builder like squarespace, wix, etc and actually have control over my website?"  What is your response?
I REALLY want to get into Muse, and I want to be convinced! It seems like a dream for designers like myself. That, what I wrote above, is the only thing that holds me back.
    Bonus question:
Say, the answer is "it's just not possible" to change the videos, etc.. What is the alternative? A bunch of iframes with say, tumblr blogs made specifically to just hold a video? Sized specifically for it, etc.
I'd just like to build websites for clients and really end it there. Move onto the next project! Even if paid, I'm just not interested in managing websites after I build them. I wouldn't really be able to convince a client to pay me every time he wants a change too.

how do you delete files from start up disk on my mac book?

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion's Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • Scan to PDF files too large! - Why?? Solution for Windows - How about Mac? (HP-8630)

Scanning a document to a PDF file of reasonable size has been addressed many times - it is always an issue! My wife is a realtor and frequently needs to scan multiple page documents. I found an actual solution last night:
27 page letter-size B&W document - Scan to PDF on my HP-8630 AIO using HP software at 300dpi, small file size, BW: 27MB! Too big to email.
Solution (in Windows 7 at least), if you have Adobe Acrobat:
Open Adobe Acrobat, go to File Menu -  Create - PDF from Scanner - Configure Presets. Select and configure "Black and White Document":
Select TWAIN device (NOT WIA) as the scanner; black and white, 300dpi, file size one notch to left (smaller) from center, check "optimize after scan". Select paper size and one- or two-sided scanning. Uncheck "make searchable". Save the preset. (The TWAIN driver was apparently installed with the HP installer, since I did not have to look for it.)
After placing pages in the Doc Feeder,  go to File Menu, Create - PDF from Scanner - Black and White Document. Watch the magic!
File size 768k!  Quality indistinguishable from the 27MB version, sharp and clear, all 27 pages! Really!
Using the HP software, using a lower resolution or sliding the file size slider to smaller makes a muddy scan, and the file  is still huge compared to the Acrobat technique. MUCH worse quality than the Acrobat 768k version.
Interestingly, using Acrobat to open the 27MB scan and "PRINT" it to the PDF Printer reduced the size to 10MB, with no change in appearance. "Save as smaller PDF" did not reduce the size further.
What gives, HP?? What can Acrobat do  to scan from your AIO that you can't do?
I tried on my Mac as well - we use both. No go. On Mac OSX 10.10.1 with latest HP drivers, Acrobat does not see any TWAIN or other driver from within the dialog box described above. Scanning from HP software again yields about 1MB per page.
Anyone know how to make Acrobat see the scanner on Mac?

    Hi @JosephWit ,
I see by your post that you are having issues with the PDF scanning size being too big. I will do my best to assist you with this issue.
The drivers for 10.10 are installed by the Apple Updates. Did you install the 10.9 drivers or are did up run the Apple Updates to install the printer?
Uninstall the 10.9 printer software and run the Apple Updates to install the proper drivers. Then you can scan with the Apple Software.
Connect the printer to the Mac by a USB cable and run the Apple Updates to install the printer drivers.
Go to the Apple, About this Mac, click on the Overview tab and select Software Updates.
Go to the Apple, Printers and Scanners, delete the USB drivers and disconnect the USB cable.
Then add the wireless printer as a Bonjour printer if the printer is networked.
Click on the + sign, highlight the printer, below beside Use: make sure just the printer name is listed. (you might have to click on the drop down to select your printer from the list)
Here is a document for Scanning in OS X v10.10 Yosemite Without HP Software.
If you are having issues with Adobe, run the updates. Product updates.
If you need further assistance, just let me know.
    Have a nice day!
    Thank You.

  • PipxelPipe for Aperture: how do you install it?

I've downloaded PixelPipe for Aperture 2 but that's as far as I've gotten. Is there a certain way that it has to be installed into Aperture for it to work? All I have been able to do is install it, but I am not able to find the actual program anywhere on my computer. This is probably something real simple and I am probably totally missing it too. Any help would be great, thanks!

Oh thanks, I didn't even think about right-clicking. I've had this mac (my first one too and I love it) for close to a year now and I am still learning new things about it, which is awesome! I still find myself having to get used to how intuitive things are as well. When I right-clicked some images, a bunch of potions did come up and under export the pixelpipe was not present. It is a dmg file on my desktop and I already went through all of those steps and it said it was installed and all but I am still unable to find it. Could it be a type of plug-in file that I need to install in Aperture's folder? (See, I think I am still going about it un-intuitively because for certain things I am still used to Windows and doing things the roundabout way instead of the way that makes sense.)

  • IOS 6.0.1 working better for me than 6.0, How about you?

I have an iPhone 4S and it got pretty buggy when I updated to iOS 6.0.  I waited as long as I could before updating to  6.0.1 but when I saw the story on Engadget about iOS 6.0 causing a lot of phones to repeatedly download the same data/apps/texts, etc. I took the plunge and updated to 6.0.1.
Glad I did.  After I installed the update using iTunes and not OTA I did a reset, ran the battery down to zero and charged it for about 10 hours.  Today the battery life is as good as I have seen it since I updated from 5.X and the wifi connection problems I had been having seem to be resolved.  The 6.0.1 update was only suppsed to fix the wifi issues for iPhone 5 but whatever they put into this update seems to havre really helped.
I also started setting Proxy to Auto on public wifi networks and this really made a difference when I try to log on to them.  I can now actully connect without having to restart/reset my phone and network settings.  And I stay connected.
I am considering updating my iPad to 6.0.1 but I may just wait until they release 6.1, which looks like it will be around new y

It's been five days since I posted my question.  And I have been very happy with the performance of my phone.  Wifi is great now that I disovered that putting proxy on Auto seems to help with most hotspots, especially at work.  Battery life is really good.  I can get through the day with normal use, make and receive phone calls, send and receive text messages, use normal apps, play games, look things up on the web, etc.  Nothing really heavy but normal usage for me and I am at 30 - 35% battery left at midnight when I plug my phone back in to charge over night.
Now that AT&T has finally given up on holding those of us with unlimited data plans hostage from using Facetime over Cellular ( I have a 4S running iOS 6.0.1) I may give that a try to see what happens with my battery life there.
It will be interesting to see what happens when 6.1 is released and what it fixes or breaks.
