Icloud makes hundreds of nameless groups in contacts! How to solve

Hi linc,
I have the same issue and i followed the link you had provided, however that didn't work. my imac is running 10.9.1, would that make any difference?
Can you also provide a step my step procedure on how to do it on AppleScript Edito? I'm no techie person anymore when it comes to OS X.

Is the 3GB used a part of the 5BG you get for free? If so, you can delete the 3GB if you want to by going to:
Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage> Under backups, click on the name of your iPhone then delete backup. Do the same thing on anything else that is showing as stored.
Once you've done all of that you can delete the account if you want or you can skip all those steps and just delete the account.
Settings>iCloud>Delete Account

If you sync your contacts to your computer you can create the group there. Then when you sync again the group wil appear on your iPhone. But the Mail app and the Messages app cannot use those groups.

In your PC, open your iCloud from website. In contacts, clck in the Red icon. It will open your contact groups. There have your All contact Group. If you click in "+" icon, you can create your own contact groups.

Duplicate iCloud Groups in Contacts

I have two iCloud groups in Contacts and two iCloud accounts in Contacts > Preferences > Accounts. See pic. Does anyone know how I can remove one of them. I have tried deleting one of the accounts but that just resulted in all the contacts being deleted from iCloud. The only option I can see is to make one of the accounts disabled, but I'd rather remove it all together.

So, you have signed out of icloud and have no active icloud accounts in internet accounts.
And, you still have an icloud account in Contacts?
If you have other accounts beside iCloud listed in Internet Accounts, make sure Contacts for all are deselected.
Go to iCloud.com and see if you have more than one iCloud account listed. Make sure all your contacts are there. You should only have one.
Question. When you sign out of iCloud, do you choose to delete the contacts from the computer? If not, sign back in to iCloud . Then sign out and choose delete all contacts from the computer. They will remain on the server. Then check the AB and see if the account still appears.
If none of the above works, we will have to find the corrupt file.

Help with iCloud contacts. Need to bring in only one particular group of contacts into an iPad 2.

I have just updated an iPad 2 which belongs to my father but which has always synced with my Macbook. On my mac, I have set up a "group" of his own contacts, but since upgrading to iOS 5 it keeps pulling in my entire contacts list. I have tried turning off "Contacts' on the iPad's icloud menu, but it has removed all of my father's contacts and when I plug the device into the Macbook and try to sync the way I always had been, it won't let me just sync particular groups, I can only choose to sync "all" contacts. Does anyone know how to make the Macbook, itunes sync allow me to pick and choose what groups of contacts I want on this device?

you can go back to sync with itunes 10.5 just like you did in iOS4 before.
If you want to continue your use/sync of iCloud Email ( most users want their @me.com ) :
On Mac Lion go  -> System Settings -> icloud , leave only the wanted sync options active, like Mail, turn off Adressbook sync plus all other unwanted items.
Power on your iOS device, tap "Settings" -> icloud and set it up to match exactly the same items like for the Mac.
Then on your next connection of the device to iTunes on Mac, you can select the various items that shall be managed using iTunes sync and not the cloud. Adressbook is under the "Info(rmation)" section.

I have tried several times to make a group of contacts so I don´t have to type every single contact when I want to send the same mail to 25 people.

I don't think so. Search for an app in App Store or create a message with all contacts you want and use this to send message to this group of people.

If you are asking how to move contacts from a non-iCloud group to the iCloud group, you would be best doing this on a computer.
If you have contacts in an 'On My Phone' group in your phone, you may ned to turn off iCloud, save your contacts when prompted, enable iCloud again and merge when prompted.

I have Smart Groups in Contacts on my Mac. When I try to send emails from my iPad, it will recognize that certain people belong to a group, but it won't recognize the group name as a valid email address. How do I fix this?

Basically, use Smart Groups on your Mac to create dynamic subsets of your contacts. Copy all of the contacts in that group (command-A) to a [regular / static / dumb] group. You can rename that group to whatever you want (including the same name as the smart group). A bit of a pain, but if the contacts in your smart group don't change that much, you shouldn't have to update your [regular / statis/ dumb] group very often... such as for my "family" group.
Also, you can then "prune" the [regular / static / dumb] group of contacts that your smart group rules included, but shouldn't be in the group, when you update it. I do this monthly for my "travel" group.

Are you trying to reduce the visual clutter on the phone, save space on the phone, or limit the security exposure if your phone is stolen?
If you are only wanting to reduce the visual clutter and make scrolling through the list faster, you could set up a group on the computer containing only the contacts you want to see on my phone (called, for example, "Show on my Phone") and enable only that group inside Contacts on the phone. You might even have one or more existing groups that you could enable that way (maybe "Family" and "Personal").

How do I restore groups to Contacts using time machine? I somehow managed to duplicate many groups and contacts in Contacts, so I deleted everything and tried to restore them using time machine backup from a few days before. It restored all my contacts, but none of my groups. If you select a group and click restore it will restore all the contacts in the group, but not the group itself. I had many groups with many contacts in each and would really prefer not to do this manually. I can see the groups in the time machine backup, but cannot figure out how to restore them. I know from researching online that with Address Books and previous operating systems you could go to ~Library/Applications Support/AddressBook and restore the whole file, but either this operating systems hides the necessary files or Contacts is set up differently than AddressBook was. I am using OS 10.9.5 and Contacts version 8.0 on a MacbookPro 13 inch mid 2010.

Here is what I have tried:
1. Finder>Go>(Option)Library>Address Book(highlighted)with files showing in right column. Opened Time Machine and Address Book folder is there. Tried to go back to several previous dates from several months ago. None will highlight in order for the Restore button to light up.
2. Finder>Mac HD (under Devices)>(Option)Library>Address Book (same as above). Again, cannot go anywhere back in time to highlight a date for Restore button to light up.
Note: I was able to use Time Machine to restore my Contacts with no problem. However, they are All Contacts only and did not restore my Groups. I do know how to make groups again and highlight and drag them back, but wanted to see if there was a way to restore the groups. I will post another question as to why my Time Machine won't let me restore the Address Book as well as the Contacts. Thank you for your time and patience.

I've just bought an iPhone 5S in the UK, seems like a big mistake, but luckily by law we can return goods, which is exactly what is going to happen if I cant get this to work. This is my business phone, not having it functional can cost me money.
I have turned off sync to icloud from the phone for both my contacts and calendar, as told on itunes. However, iTunes still says they are synced from iCloud and wont sync to my PC, why and how do I fix it so that it doesnt go to iCloud for anything ?
The phone currently has no contacts or calendar information installed.
PC is HP Probook 4730s running Windows 7, Professional, version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601.

I'm happy you figured it out and just try to keep in mind that not everyone you talk to at support will give the same advice or have the same knowledge. Just like those who contribute to these forums. Sometimes Google is your best friend.
I agree that Apple could probably make it easier, but as of yet prefer security over freedom. (sound famaliar?)
