ICloud or not?

I have an iPhone 4 running iOS5, and a PowerBook running OSX 10.5.8. Should I enable iCloud on my phone or not? With 10.5.8, it doesn't look like I can use iCloud with my PB...am I reading this right? Seems like a pretty murky thing at this time...I don't know what will sync and what won't. Methinks perhaps I should wait until more of the bugs are worked out?

Hi Richard, most things won't Sync at all, the exception being that you can setup a .me Mail account using iMAP...

Some other things will sync if you use a direct connection of the 2.

I want to delete all my contacts and calendar appointments from iCloud, but not from my iphone, and i still want to have iCloud turned on in the future.
I have tried to delete the iCloud account from my iphone but when i log in to iCloud.com from a computer the contacts are still there even though i deleted the iCloud account.
How do i remove these things only from iCloud?

I fixed it, i had to turn off the syncing of the contacts and the calendar on the phone and then delete them from iCloud. Obviously if i turn on the syncing of these items again the contacts and calendar appointments will reappear in iCloud.
So problem solved.

As I said, it doesn't actually tell me anywhere how to backup using iCloud. I was under the impression that the stuff i had selected was all being automatically backed-up without any intervention by me.
But no. Having now received extra storage, I checked to see how much my documents, photographs, etc had taken up already, only to find that only my Mail (and probably not all of that) has been backed up.
In typical Apple fashion, there are no written instructions anywhere for iCloud (and I did look for them a year ago, when my account was migrated). Like MobileMe, it seems to be load of hype with little substance.
So, am I expected to drag stuff across or upload documents to the cloud, like I do very easily with Dropbox? Or is it actually automatic, as I had been led to believe? Any advice or a pointer to the guidance would be gratefully received.

You can't sync contacts on your Mac with iCloud running Snow Leopard (10.6.8). That requires Lion (10.7.5) or higher. If your system can't run this, you'll have to go to turn of contact syncing with iCloud and either start syncing them with iTunes, or use an alternative service such as a Google contacts. You could, for example, go to Settings>iCloud on your phone, turn contacts off, choose Keep on My iPhone when prompted, then set up a Gmail account and sync them as explained here: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/2753077?hl=en.

Thank you Roger, your solution gave me the courage to sign out of Systems Preferences. The pop up told me it was going to delete my contact and other information from my mac, so I was hesitant to do that. Well I did as you directed and I was able to sign in with my new apple id and I did not lose the information the pop up threatened I was going to. So again thank you. It is the little things that make a big difference sometimes.

Do you know what happens if you delete the icloud account from an iphone 4s? Will it delete the pictures, documents, etc. from the phone, or just unlink the icloud from the phone? I want to associate a different icloud account to the phone.

I called Apple and they said that they know about this problem. It's a problem with iCloud which their Engineers know about. (there was a new iCloud release, hence...) No ETA for a fix yet. I asked that this be escalated so Engineering doesn't put it at the bottom of their fix list. I talked to a Senior Advisor and mentioned to them to have QA check their regression tests as this has happened before to me (the problem just didn't take this long to resolve). I like to use green too for important stuff, so I've resorted to creating a new calendar using the normal calendar green for events going forward. They could have picked another color besides green to have this problem with and I wouldn't have been so upset. ;-)

I recently have been experiencing this error:

Access to account “iCloud” is not permitted.
The server responded:

to operation CalDAVAccountRefreshQueueableOperation.
It occurs repeatedly every two seconds and I can't get the dialog to dismiss or go away. My calendars work on fine on my iPhone 6 and iPad mini but on the mac, it gives this error. I tried creating a new user account on the mac, starting fresh but as soon as I log into iCloud and then open calendar, the dialog is back. I suspect there is something wrong on the server site of things. I had some fradulent charges on my iCloud account that Apple cleared up for me. Then they disabled my account (I guess this is something they do when a dispute occurs) and I've had to contact them twice to get them to clear it up. This error started to appear around the same time. I also tried to update to Yosemite but that didn't fix it either. I've deleted all my calendars and created a new one via iCloud.com. Still there. I've found some others online who have had the same issue without success. Is there any hope to get the calendar working again? Help!?

Quit Calendar, turn off your internet connection, then paste this text ~/Library into the Finder Menu>Go>Go to Folder...window and select "Go." This will open the Users Library Folder.
Open the Calendars Folder which is in that Library Folder, and move any any files with "Cache" listed in the name field to your Desktop.
Next open the Preferences Folder in that same Library Folder and move the com.apple.iCal.plist file to the Desktop.
Log out/in or restart reconnect the internet and open Calendar.

The Photos app doesn't currently support subfolders, it only has the one level of folder/album. You will either need to change your folder structure on your computer to be just one level, see if there is a third-party photo app in the store that copes with subfolders, or just make do. The password for the new Apple ID does not work since the iCloud default user name is imbedded in the login box. You have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use. If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change. Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address. You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPad on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iPad when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was. Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

I changed my AppleID/Password and now am locked out of iCloud. iCloud says maximum number of free accounts have been activated. tried Settings, Mail etc but iCloud does not appear. I was going to delete it and start again.

Had to change Apple ID/Password recently now cannot access iCloud. In settings when tapping iC, log in screen appears with old ID and request for (old) password.
In Settings Mail, Contacts etc iCloud does not appear. I was going to delete account.
Trying new ID/Password message appears "maximum no. of free accounts have been activated".
Using old ID/Password message apperas "you can,t sign in because account was disabled for security reasons ......reset password at iforgot.apple.com which i did.

I tried to log in to iCloud but a message appears telling me I "can't sign in because my account was disabled for security reasons....reset password at iforgot.apple.com". I don't know why this happened.
I reset both my Apple ID and password.
When I tap Settings iCloud is listed on the left side between General and Mail, Contacts etc.
Tapping iCloud brings up a log in screen for iCloud which shows my old Apple ID and requests the password. If I put the password in I get the message as above.
If I use the new Apple ID/Password I get the message "the maximum number of free accounts have been activated....
In settings there is no option to "Delete Account"
Any suggestions??
