ICloud: Page documents disappearing

my iPad had a technical disorder. it was repaired but after re-storing from the latest iCloud copy, my documents of the last 72 hours seem to be missing, although I synchronized them. in my Pages, the docs are simply missing, on the PC (iCloud page) they are there, but empty with a Pages icon and at the Helpdesk they seem to be able to open them but I must wait for a technical investigation, I really need those (mine!) docs, what to do?

Have you looked on icloud.com/iwork?  They might still be on the iWork site.  If they are, download them immediately.  If they're gone there too, do you have a Time Machine backup?  If not, you're probably hosed.  Always recommend local backups and for really really important docs, burning to CD, storing another copy in Dropbox, etc.

  • Ok.  I'm stumped.  The right side scroll bar on my pages documents disappears sometimes.  I don't know how to restore that function.  If I widen the page field, it will appear for a short time.  Very annoying if I am just using trackpad.  What to do?

Ok.  I'm stumped.  The right side scrool bar on Pages documents disappears sometimes.  I have no idea why. Nor do I know how to get it back.  I've tried closing and reopening and restarting my macbook pro.  If I widen the right side, I get the scroll bar for just a few seconds and then if fades away.  I can't find anything it the help menus that fits it.

    geek,
The scroll bar is consistent with the Full Screen approach in trying to maximize the working area of your screen. The scroll bar fades to make room for data. So, use your 2-fingered scroll or arrow keys for short moves. If you have a long way to scroll, the scroll bar will activate any time you scroll with the trackpad or the arrow keys and you can grab it and pull it to your desired position in the document.

  • Editing icloud pages document on desktop, edits not showing up on icloud

I have a pages document on my icloud called "ABC123"
    I am on my mac
I go to FINDER > iCLOUD > PAGES FOLDER
in the pages folder I see the document "ABC123"
    I click ABC123
It opens in pages on my desktop (not in browser)
I make an edit and type: "***?"
    I click save.
When I open ABC123 in the browser-version of pages, my "***?" edit is not there.
Why are my edits not syncing with the icloud version even though I opened it through my icloud folder? Everything is updated (software and pages and icloud acct).... can we just not use the desktop version to edit icloud documents?
    In other words:
I ask because I'd like to collaborate with others, but I would like to use my desktop version. They can use the browser to edit. but.... my desktop edits aren't saving to the collaborative online version of ABC123

    Hello anonAnthony,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Yes, Pages and iCloud Drive can be used in the way you're describing. It sounds like you're seeing some unexpected behavior with this feature.
For troubleshooting, start with the tips in the "Documents on iCloud.com are not updated when changes are made on my iOS device or Mac" section of this article:
iCloud: Troubleshooting Documents in the Cloud - Apple Support
You may also want to close and re-open Pages and Safari, and test again.
If the steps above don't solve it, the article I mentioned recommends contacting iCloud Support for more help:

  • Why are my iCloud Pages documents showing as "zero bytes" in Pages on my MacBookPro?

Many of my Pages documents that are stored in iCloud can not be opened in Pages on my MacBookPro.  They show "zero bytes".  Is there something I can do to have them showing their full size and be accessible from Pages on my MacBookPro?

I realize it's probably an imponderable question and I could do the dragging thing from iWork in iCloud to iWork.com Beta and vice versa. It doesn't really seem right, or even Apple-like, that Numbers on my iPad saves to the ICloud iWork and Numbers on my iMac, MacBook and MacBook Pro saves their documents to iWork.com. Why the heck aren't they saved to the same iWork? This should work more smoothly if they want people to use the iOS device to it's fullest extent.
So, there's no way around it. At some point I'll have to pick one of the iWorks to work on the documents from. I guess it would have to be the iCloud iWork since the iOS Numbers can't get to the iWork.com iWork? And I'll have to save the Numbers docs on the Macs and then drag them to the iCloud iWork? Brilliant! Same for Pages?

  • Lost iCloud Pages Document because of xml index missing- finally resolved!

This morning I opened a Pages document in the cloud and started making changes to it the same as I have a hundred times in the past.  The dreaded spinning ball appeared and I force quit Pages.  Upon trying to open the same document I got the dreaded "xml index is missing".  I callled tech support and was told by the first person that there is no way to recover the document.  I also asked if Time Machine would have backed it up and he said NO, there is no way of recovering it if I didn't make a copy of it.  I called Apple Support again and this time talked to a lady who at least tried to help me, but we weren't making any progress.  I then found an article online (after searching earlier for the xml issue) that said Time Machine DOES backup Mobile Documents under the ~Library/Mobile Documents unless you specifically tell it not to.  Luckily this person insisted that it backs up mobile documents because I was able to recover the document from a Time Machine backup.  Thank you to the person who posted about the Time Machine backup!  Now Apple needs to let their Tech Support people know about this!

    Hank,
You were wise to search for answers here. There's no doubt that there is more collective wisdom in these discussions than you would expect to encounter in one first-echelon phone support person. You are also wise to be using TimeMachine so you have that recovery option available to you.

  • My Pages documents disappeared from iCloud before my very eyes.

    Hello all,
I was at home getting ready for a presentation by writing a document in Pages on my Mac. I saved it to iCloud, and just to be sure it was there, I got my iPad and pulled up the document there. All seemed well, so off I went to my destination.
When I'm at the destination getting ready to present, I open my iPad and start looking at the document there. Then I get a message that says something like, "Your document has been deleted on another device." (This is impossible since I didn't delete it and no one else has access to my devices.) Then I watched in horror as my document and one or two others disappeared from the Pages iCloud list before my very eyes.
So I was stuck now no notes for my presentation. So uncool.
I looked up this problem here and see that a lot of people had similar problems back in 2011. Is anyone having this happen now? And if so, is there a reason/solution? It's such a dramatic problem it makes me not want to use iCloud at all.

  • My Pages documents disappeared from my iphone somehow in the process of changing my iphone account from a defunct email address to my new one. How do I get them back?

I changed my Apple account to a new email address and away from an address that was discarded last summer. Somehow, in the process, all my Notes word processing documents left my iphone. Did they go to the icloud for my old Apple account or just disappear completely? I can't access the old icloud since it requires a working up-to-date email address. Apple Security so far has not been able to help me restore my orphaned files. What to do now?!

  • How Can I download and open iCloud Pages doucments?

Hello. I hope someone can help me. I am going crazy as I cannot download and open a  lengthy iCloud Pages document I have been working on. Each time I perform a download the document appears as a ZIP Archive in my Downloads Folder on my MacBook Air. However, when I try to open the document  e.g. using Zip View Pro, I get a one-page document instead of the original 150+ pages manuscript.
My second 'beef' about iPages is that it synchronizes very slowly. I worked on my document on an iPad and then, the next day, tried to continue working on it on my laptop. The changes I'd made on the iPad did not appear until much, much later. I was better off using Dropbox as a meansa of ensuing that, whatever machine I happened to be working on, I would always have access to the latest version of my file.
I am very, very disappointed with ICould Pages!!!
    Stephen

You can try to open the zip file with the bulit-in Mac Archive Utility application (right click, Open With > Archive Utility.app).
I expect the manuscript file is quite large but I can't explain the delayed iCloud sync.

  • How do I delete 'ghost' Pages documents from iCloud / iPhone?

Today I got back a brand new iPhone 4 from the repair. It was already preinstalled with iOS 5, just updated to 5.0.1 and restored data from backup on iTunes. Enabled iCloud, opened Pages and…after 5-10 seconds iCloud started to sync and I got almost dozen "ghost" files in Pages — inf folders they look like normal Pages documents, but when I open folder, they are grayed out and at the top right corner they have arrow pointing upwards. Can't delete, can't open them.
Completely closed Pages, disabled data backup in iCloud preferences, turned off iCloud sync in Pages settings. Opened Pages, chose to delete all files in Pages. Restarted iPhone, enabled iCloud data backup and enabled iCloud sync in Pages settings, opened Pages, and soon real files appeared in Pages, which I could see also in Safari browser in iCloud/Pages section. However, after one minute all those "ghost" files and folders also appeared back! I can't even drag those "ghost" documents out of "ghost" folders, can't rename, can't delete. And someone not long ago ensured us that iCloud will surely work…
I deleted Pages application form my iPhone, installed from App Store again, enabled iCloud syncing and again after 1 minute all "ghost" files are back in Pages. In Safari browser I see only one "ghost" file, all the other "ghost" files and folders are not visible at all. Any idea what to do?

Problem solved! I completely quit Pages on my iPhone, then opened ~/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~Pages/Documents folder on my Mac and deleted all those "ghost" folders and files there, also deleted the same names in iWorkPreviews folder. Opened Pages on iPhone and voila! — all those "ghost" files and folders disappeared for good.

  • I have a Pages document in iCloud that will not open. I have Time Machine. How do I get to the version of the document that is not corrupted?

I'm in a bind. I tried to open a Pages document that I saved from the current version of Pages on my iMac this morning on my iPad, which has the current version of Pages of the iPad. It would not open on the iPad. Now it also will not open on the iMac, or on the Beta of iCloud Pages.
If it were on my hard drive, I could use Time Machine to recover the most recent version, but it's in iCloud. I've been told that implies that there is a local copy, but I don't know where that is.
It's a book manuscript I've been working on for months. I'm not happy.
    Thanks for the help.

Your opinion of Apple products seems unusually harsh. I know how iCloud works and I'm generally pretty happy with it. I also like Pages a lot more than MS Word, and somewhat more than NeoOffice. Word is overripe with so many features Microsoft keeps radically changing the interface in the desperate hope that somehow they will make it easy to use again, but instead, they just confuse everybody with the unnecessary changes.
They had menus, until there were too many options to fit the screen, so they added submenues, until that wasn't enough, so they added dialog boxes, until that wasn't enough, so they added tabbed dialog boxes, and realized that a lot of commonly used features were too hard to get to, so they added the Toolbar just as a shortcut to the more common features and then came up with the unforgivable decision to eliminate the menu interface entirely in the Windows version of the product and replace it with The Ribbon, which took me so long to interpret that I stopped using Word altogether.
NeoOffice is simpler and quite useful, but it was iCloud that sold me on Pages. It's great being able to review and edit documents on iOS devices in addition to automatically synchronizing across Mac OS X devices.
I have options for synchronization with Box and DropBox, and I have a network share I can use, if having a local copy isn't important, but I find that having a local copy (like with Box, DropBox and iCloud) is great because each computer I use has Time Machine, so I don't have to rely on the service to restore a file. I can get it, myself. It's easier to browse to the version I want in Time Machine than it is to estimate the time I want to restore from and hope that someone else can find the right version of the file from whenever they made a backup to restore it for me. I have unhappy experiences from this kind of request to restore stuff.
I find Box and DropBox to be somewhat crude compared to iCloud. I like Apple's new attitude toward saving files. When I edit in Pages and exit, the file is saved. If I edit a file and the power goes out, I generally lose a sentence or less. In traditional apps, I can easily lose hours of work, unless I remember to manually save as I go.
iCloud is not a general remote file storage facility. At it's root, it is a roaming version of whatever you have on iOS devices. So, if I want to access a file from multiple devices and not have to worry about versions, I use iCloud.
This problem I just had was the first problem I've had with iCloud, and with Time Machine, and I use them a lot. Having someone tell me where the local copy of the documents are fixed the problem.
    I love Time Machine.
For myself, when I upgraded from Bento 1 to Bento 2 on several computers, one of them choked on my data file. I followed Bento's directions to recover the data file until it said to reinstall Bento 1 from original medium. I couldn't find my disc. Yes, I had bought it. I don't steal software. But I couldn't find my disc.
So, I used Time Machine to restore Bento 1. Just try restoring an older version of an app in Windows from any backup software available to Windows and see how far you get.
I helped someone else recover a couple thousand email messages using Time Machine instead of dealing with the email service because we could open Mail, go to the folder where the messages had disappeared when she had a power glitch, and then browse back until we found the backup just before the messages disappeared. The restore took about 20 minutes, but again, this verges on magic.
I've used Time Machine to restore an older version of OS X when someone discovered that a crucial app wasn't ready for it yet. The glitch was that she hadn't backed up for a month. She kept ignoring the warning prompts. So, when I showed up, I had her do a current backup before doing the restore. We then restored to the old OS, restarted in the old OS and opened Time Machine to recover all her documents, pictures, etc. from the current backup, so she didn't lose a month of work. This is another thing I can't do with other backup programs.
So, I'm generally pretty happy with Apple. Once someone told me where the local copy of my iCloud documents resides, I could take care of this most recent problem.

  • I need to retrieve a lost Pages Document in iCloud

Yesterday I was lokking for a password in my Pages "passwords" document.
    Suddenly the document disappeared.
I can't find it; it is completely lost.
    I don't have a back-up.
Looking for information, it looks as if nobody ever had this problem.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If you don't have it and you don't have a back up, there isn't a lot you can do unfortunately. However you might look at iCloud.com on a computer as a last check.

  • Pages will not open a downloaded .pages document from iCloud because index.xml file not found?

New to using iCloud.  I created a large pages document on Mac Air and saved it to my iCloud account.  Found it at home on desktop Mac and downloaded it.  No problem.  However, it will not open due to the index.xml file not being found.  What should I do to open this document?  I've tried several things and no luck yet.  Thanks for any tips!  :-)

Options posted here: The required index.xml file is missing.

Try this. It worked for me:
    1. Single click on the document. This will "highlight" the document icon, but not invoke the error message.
    2. Click on "File" in the menu.
    3. Scroll down to "Open With".
    4. One of my choices in the "Open With" selection is Pages (default) (5.0.1)
    5. Click on that choice and the document should open.
In my "Open WIth" selection there is also a Pages (4.0.4), but that didn't work for me.
Now, here is a caveat. If before you open your document you instead first click on an open Internet window, then the "Open With" selection disappears from the File menu. In that case just single click again on the document icon again and the "Open With" selection returns.

    Try this:
      1. Make a duplicate of the file (cmd D), just to be safe
      2. Select .pages on the copy and change to .zip
      3. When the System asks if you really want to do this, click Use .zip
      4. Double click the new .zip file
      5. It will now appear as a folder with no extension
      6. Append .pages to the end of the folder name
      7. Again click on Use .pages
      8. Double click on this file to open it in Pages.
What you have done is extracted all the Pages resources from the .pages "package" and reconstructed it.

  • Can't find 3 Pages documents on iCloud?

I restarted my computer two days ago, and everything seemed to be fine, but when I opened Pages up, it suddenly didn't pop up at my iCloud Drive. It just said "create new document". So when I went to "Open Recent", NONE of the files I've worked on in the past 2-3 months were there. It all came up with stuff I did back in September.
And when I searched the file name on my computer, nothing popped up.
However, when I went to "Recent Items", the three pages documents popped up, but were unable to be clicked. So it recognizes they exist, but can't open them? And the three pages documents aren't on iCloud, but they were previously saved there. Is there any way to access previously saved versions or anything to get these files back?
I don't know how they all just managed to disappear without leaving some trace on my computer.

Just a hunch - are you also using mobile devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod) , and did you upgrade the mobile devices to iOS8?  And did you enable iCloud Drive on these mobile devices? Then "Documents in the Cloud" will no longer sync.

  • Pages document doesn't propagate in iCloud

    Hello,
I place a Pages document in iCloud (in the Pages application on my Mac, using 10.8.2), and it just won't propagate to my iPad (iOS 6).
I have other documents there and it works so so (like iCloud usually does), but this one just won't move from my Mac.
My internet connection is working flawlessly, iCloud is set-up everywhere, it's worked in the past.
Why is this document stuck at "Waiting"?
    Loa

    Hello,
From other apps, you mean? Did not check at the time. I'll make a new note on my Mac the next time I run into this problem to check.
The Wi-Fi connectionwas working though, that I checked.

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5/5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.1 sometimes can not open its own files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has not only managed to confuse all its users, but also itself.
Note: Apple has removed over 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.
