ICloud Photo Backup is unbearably slow...

I just signed up to increase my cloud storage plan to 500GB so that I could take advantage of the new iCloud Photo Backup service; however, once I enabled it on my Mac I noticed the upload speed was atrociously slow (like dial-up speed). I have FIOS 75/75 Mbps and it's barely making a dent on my bandwidth when I monitor it through my router. Given my photo library is almost 300GB is there another or better way to get this uploaded for the initial backup?

1 - that depends on what setting you have - MyPhotoStream photos are on the device that posted them and in iCloud and are only saved for 30 days in iCloud - If you have your Mac set to automatically import photos form MyPhotoStream then when iPhoto is running the photos are imported into iPhoto events names for the month they are imported - once a photo is in an event it is saved until you delete it from iPhpoto
2 - Not sure wha you mean by safely delete on the phone
or more iCloud info see https://www.apple.com/support/icloud/
and as to your post title - the iCloud backup of your phone is not involved in any way with PhotoStreams nor is it an archive - it is simply a backup of everything on the phone at a point in time and it totally replaces on th next backup - and there is no ability to selectively restore from it
Basically iphoto and icloud are simple - iPhoto does what you tell it to in the preferences - MyPhotoStream is a short term way of sharing photos  between devices using a single Apple ID - SharedPhotoStreams are for sharing photos on  permanent  basis between  list of selected  people

  • Does iCloud photo Library just duplicates my iCloud photos Backup? or uses the same copy?

    Hi,
So i want to enable both iCloud backup AND Photo Library. But, i was wondering, how will it be held?
After turning on the iCloud Photo Library, will the photos in the Backup get deleted? or it uses them and share them between the two services?
Or it just upload all the photos again and i'll have two copies of my photos in my iCloud?

  • HT4859 Where can I find my iCloud photo backup on my MacBook?

My iCloud storage is almost full so I'd like to upload my photo stream photos to some storage website so that I can delete my iCloud photo stream backup and clear up some storage space. However, I don't know how to find my iCloud photo stream backup on my MacBook. Is it at iPhoto? But my iPhoto only contains very few of the photos I've taken! Help! Thanks a lot!

It depends on when you enabled photo stream on your device and on your Mac.  When you enable photo stream on your device, only photos added to the camera roll after enabling photo stream are uploaded, not existing photos.  And photo stream photos are only kept in iCloud for 30 days (even though they remain on your devices until deleted).  Because of this, when you enable photo stream on your Mac, you only receive photo stream photos from the last 30 days, as old photos are no longer in iCloud.
If your goal is to reduce your iCloud storage, deleting photo stream photos won't help because they don't use your iCloud storage.  Only camera roll photos use your iCloud storage because they are included in your iCloud backup.
If you want to get all your photos in iPhoto, save your photo stream photos to your camera roll (if not already there) by opening your my photo stream album, tapping Edit, tap the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll.  Then import them to iPhoto as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.  When you do, you will have the option to delete them from your camera roll, thereby saving space in your iCloud account by reducing the size of your next backup.

  • ICloud Photo Backup

I have just spent hours on getting my contacts and understanding the different clouds that have different contacts, now I am trying to find my pictures. I backed up my girls phone, including having photos checked "On", Restored the phone to hopefully handle a battery issue, and now not seeing the photos that I backed up. Under iCloud in Settings it states that the last back up was yesterday and was 1.1 GB of photos, but they're like 5 pics in my camera roll and photo stream. How do I recover these?  iCloud.com does not show photos as a section!

Photo Stream only holds the last 30 days of photos on the server.
Any photos taken in the last 30 days will be in the Recently Added album.
Anything older would need to be restored from a backup.
Photo Stream is meant to be a sync tool and not a backup solution. You should be transferring important photos and videos to your computer so they can be backed up.
iOS: Import personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer
If you have an iCloud backup:
Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings
after it resets go through the setup process and when prompted, select restore from iCloud backup.

  • How does iCloud Photo Library backup photos & save iCloud space

I was reading about how to free up some space on my iCloud account (5GB).
Since the Camera Roll is the only thing that is backed up to iCloud, I would periodically import all my photos to iPhoto and delete them from my device.  This would make the Camera Roll pictures move over to my other albums which are NOT backed up to iCloud.  Now I ran into some apple documentation which explains what exactly gets backed up on an iOS device and its reads like this:
Photos and videos on your iOS devices, unless you turn on iCloud Photo Library beta on your iOS 8.1 device. If you turn on iCloud Photo Library beta, your photos and videos are already stored in iCloud, so they aren’t included in your iCloud Backup.
So basically if I turn on this iCloud Photo Library on my iOS device, it won't back up any photos to iCloud, because they are already stored in iCloud?  What does that mean?  Is this going to free up some iCloud space if I turn it on on my device?  If so, how exactly does it work that will save me space?
    Thanks

And of those 4.3GB of backup, my Photo Library is 1.4GB.
So my question is, how do I prevent my Photo Library from being backed up to the cloud, since I already have a backup of it everytime I connect to iPhoto and it copies all those photos to my mac?
I don't know, sorry. It's supposed to work alongside Photos & iCloud, so that photos are stored only once. When it doesn't work you have a couple of options as I see it –
Delete the old backups on iCloud to hopefully start over (I don't like deleting the only backup of anything).
Forget about iCloud backups & use iTunes to backup instead, it might not be suitable if you have no computer etc.
    Buy more storage for iCloud.
I don't use iCloud backup, it bemuses me with issues like this, there is no easy way to resolve when it fails.
And one more question while we are at it...can I erase iphoto from my computer now that I have the new Photos app?
That is up to you. If you are happy you do not need it & have a backup of it go ahead & remove it. You can re-download it from the app store if it is already in your Mac App store account.

Are you talking about an iCloud backup? If so, no, an iCloud backup cannot be viewd, it can only be restored to another iOS device.

My iPhone 5s is stolen and I want to restore iPhone photos from iCloud. I have use iCloud to backup the iPhone photos. Is there any way to restore my photos from iCloud to mac?

The backup of your iPod Touch would include your camera roll photos.  Restoring the backup to another iPod Touch or iPhone would recover them.  Photos will not be restored by restoring the backup to an iPad.
Note: Apple deletes iCloud backups after 180 days of inactivity so be sure to do this before then.

  • Permanent photo backup - iCloud, iPad, iPhone

    Hello.
I just purchased 200GB plan on iCloud.
I thought it would be the easiest way to backup the photos on my iPad Air and iPhone 5.
Now while browsing trough some tutorials on the web - every site is saying that iCloud is not a photo backup solution - it only stores 1000 photos and deletes them after 30 days.
Is this true? Then why would anybody need so large iCloud plans?
    Thanks.

What you're referring to is Photo Stream, which only stored 1000 of the most recent photos.   With iCloud Photo Library, you can now permanently store your photos and videos on iCloud and sync them across devices.  It's still in BETA though, so it has some quirks and limitations.  With iOS 8.1, you can go into your iCloud settings and enable it.  If you do that, it will replace your camera roll with the iCloud Photo Library and begin uploading ALL of your photos and videos to iCloud. All of these uploads will count towards your photo storage plan, but they will be permanent, as opposed to Photo Stream.  As well as syncing across devices, you can also view them on the web at iCloud.com.   However, the Mac Photos app will not come out until some time in 2015, so right now there are limitations to what you can do with your photos.

  • Can I still make a backup when i'm using iCloud photo library?

I want to know that if i'm using the iCloud photo library, i will be able to make a backup in itunes on my mac?

    But i mean in iTunes.
Can I change the settings in iCloud, that I only have a backup in iTunes??

  • Recently upgraded my iphone to ios 7. I'm using icloud to backup the phone and I cannot tell which, if any, of my photos are being backed up.

I cannot tell which, if any, of my photos are being backed up from my iphone to icloud.  The "switch" at Settings>iCloud>Photos is "off" but when I try to turn it on all I get is two more options to turn on My Photo Stream and Photo Sharing.  I only want to back up my photos to iCloud so I can make sure I don't lose something when installing updates.

iCloud backs up the photos in your Camera Roll and keeps the last 30 days of photos in your Photo Stream if you have Photo Stream turned on. However, each backup overlays the previous one, and only the last three are kept, so if you start deleting photos from your camera roll, then the earlier ones would no longer be available for you to use as a backup.
iCloud is not intended as an archival storage of your photos. You should be importing your photos to either iPhoto on your Mac, or to your PC or to a photo archival cloud service like DropBox. If you rely on iCloud for full archival storage of your photos, you are going to end up losing valuable photos that you want to keep, because that is not the purpose of iCloud.

  • I can't see my photos in iCloud Photos on my PC even after tech support, reboot, manual sync and backup. Help?

I'm using an iPhone 5S. When I take photos, they do not seem to sync to iCloud Photos on my PC. I have nine photos in that folder, from one date back in May, but none before or since. I spent hours with tech support today, and we rebooted the phone, rebooted iCloud, checked all the settings, etc etc. The Tech said that she could see photos being uploaded, so we thought it was fixed. However, those photos still have not appeared in the iCloud Photos folder on my PC (Windows 7). I'm using up-to-date versions of iOS and Windows. As a work-around, I've been using Dropbox to transfer photos to my computer, but I'd rather not have to use a work-around with such an expensive piece of hardware.
I'm frustrated because the issue is not resolved, but it seems that I'll have to pay to get more tech support. Jerks.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Getting photo stream to work on a PC can be hit or miss.  There's a long discussion on this with various solutions offered here: My Photo Stream is empty with iCloud Control Panel 3.0.  What worked for me was to change the default iCloud Photos location back to /Photos/Photo Stream.

  • HT1766 finding photos on icloud after backup

i back up my iphone to icloud but cant find my photos on icloud and ideas

Backing up you phone to iCloud does not upload your photos to Photo Stream for viewing on iCloud.  For this you need to turn on Photo Stream in Settings>iCloud>Photo Stream.  Also, only photos taken after turning on Photo Stream are uploaded from your phone to Photo Stream, not existing photos.

  • IMac has been unbearably slow

    Hello,
I purchased this iMac in early 2012, and it has recently become unbearably slow. Creating new folders, loading new tabs in Chrome, just doing basic work on the computer...it all takes frustratingly long! I don't do any heavy graphics processing, just some light gaming, word processing, excel. I have rebooted within the last few days and don't really want to purchase more RAM unless it's absolutely necessary. Just looking for advice on what options I have!

  • ICloud Photos using considerable cpu

All of a sudden, around 2 weeks ago, my Macbook Pro 15" (late 2008 model) started to run really really slow.
After the usual shut down and restart it continued to run slowly so i dived into Activity Monitor and imeadiately found that the processes "iCloud Photos" and "icbaccountsd" were using the majority of avalilble cpu. Im talking 89-98%.
I went into system preferences and turned off Photos in iCloud and that has stopped the cpu consumption.
Any ideas of why this would happen and how i rectify it? I would like to turn iCloud Photos back on at some stage.
Im running 10.9.2 with 8GB of ram.
    Cheers for your ears.

Why would this be causing problems now?
There may be one corrupted video or image file in your photo stream, that cannot be processed and  causing the photo stream agent trying over and over again to process the items.
You could try, if removing the contents of the Photo Stream  from your User library to a backup folder will help:  "My Photo Stream" is buffered in this folder in your User Library:
    ~/Library/Application Support/iLifeAssetManagement/assets/sub/
You user library may still be hidden, as is the default in Mavericks: To open your hidden user library:
Select the "Home" folder icon (the little house)  in the Finder's sidebar and press the key combination ⌘J to open the "view options".
    Enable "Show Library Folder".
Then open the Home folder and open the Library folder inside and navigate to ~/Library/Preferences
