ICloud Photo Library - Optimize or not

I am tempted to switch on "Optimize iPad / iPhone Storage" but am nervous about whether iCloud will really retain the original full resolution photos and videos. I have read some posts where people claim it does not.
So my questions:
1: Have you tested and positively confirmed that iCloud will retain the full resolution photos and videos?
2: If I optimize on my iPad / iPhone and I want to email a picture, is it still possible to send the full resolution picture?
3: Will it synchronize the full resolution picture with iPhoto on the Mac?
Thanks.
Karl

albums keep appearing and disappearing on iCloud.com/Photos ... again with no title but containing, most of the time, corresponding photos (saying that because sometimes albums that I never created show up too, with a mixture of images picked randomly by the server) ... in any case no album is ever syncing back to my iPhone.
How do I clean that mess? I don't mind losing the albums actually, what I mind is that they still exist but are not visible locally, preventing apps from using them. There's also the risk that they'll sync again one of these days, creating duplicate albums if I create them again manually in the meantime. But there's no way to manage albums on iCloud.com, that's the problem; otherwise I'd get rid of them there.

  • ICloud Photo Library optimize space

Hi, I just switched to the iCloud photo library. If I optimize space on my iphone and I need an high quality photo on my iphone (for example to edit it using an app), could I download only the photo that I need in high quality from iCloud?
    thank you

Apple does not say what will happen, if your Photos Library is too large for iCloud. And it is risky to try to find out.
If you want only selected photos in iCloud, make your main System Photo Library small, and keep the bulk of your photos in a separate Photos Library.
That is, what I am doing - a small library for syncing to iCloud and across devices, and a large library with most of my photos.
You can switch between libraries by holding down the alt/options key while launching Photos.

  • Share an album using iCloud Photo Library

    Hello.
I'm currently using the iCloud Photo Library and it's great.
But, I want to share an album (or just a few photos). But iCloud Photo Library does still not allow to share an album.
So, I want to use a Shared PhotoStream Album. And it seems that the iPhone is uploading my files (photos and videos) to the Shared PhotoStream.
Tell me if it is right... In fact, why the phone is re-uploading the videos/photos if there are already uploaded to my iCloud Library ?
    Best regards,
    Alexis

If I want to share some pictures and videos, I have to specify which photos, album and person... Yes, of course. But when I want to validate the creation of the album, I'll have to wait a long time, in particular if my Wifi is slow. In fact, if the video is already uploaded in the iCloud Photo Library, Apple should simply copy/paste it in the Share Album...

  • ICloud Photo Library won't upload photos from my PC, cites network error

The new photo app for iCloud.com is supposed to allow uploading photos from my PC to my iCloud Photo Library, which will then be accessible from my iPad and iPhone.  But when I try to upload photos from my PC I get a message that the upload failed due to "network error."  Uploading from the iPhone or iPad works fine.  Any suggestions?

I have the same issue. These are my findings so far:

  • ICloud Photo Library won't upload pics from iPhone

    Hi all,
So I think it might have been with the 8.3 update, but for some reason any new pics taken on my iPhone will not upload to my iCloud Photo Library. I've tried turning off/on iCloud Photo Library, syncing with my computer, etc. but nothing has helped. Anyone else struggling with this/have a solution getting your pics to sync between devices? Thanks!

  • ICloud Photo Library: How do I transfer photos and videos only from my iPhone to my iPad but not from my iPad to my iPhone?

I had iCloud photo libraey turned on on both my iPad and iPhone. As said by the feature, photos and videos were being transferred automatically from each device to each other. I have a 64GB iPad Air 2 and my iPhone 5 only has 16GB of storage so I am lacking much more space on my iPhone than my iPad. I was wondering if there was a way to transfer photos only from my iPhone to my iPad but not from my iPad to my iPhone. Would turning off iCloud Photo library on my iPad do the trick? Thanks hope someone can help me out.

iCloud Photo Library keeps all of your photos in the Cloud which you then can selectively download. So, unless you download the iPad photos, they are not going to be taking up any room on your iPhone:
How does iCloud Photo Library save space on my device?
If you turn on Optimize [device] Storage, iCloud Photo Library will automatically manage the size of your library on your iOS device, so you can make the most of your device's storage and access more photos than ever. iCloud Photo Library stores the original, high-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and can keep lightweight, device-optimized versions on each of your devices. As long as you have enough storage, recent photos and videos that you access the most will stay on your device at full resolution.
You can turn on Optimize [device] Storage from Settings > iCloud > Photos or Settings > Photos & Camera > iCloud Photo Library on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. You need an Internet connection to access an original photo or video that’s stored only in iCloud.

  • How does iCloud Photo Library and Optimize iPhone Storage Work?

Even Apple Phone support can't answer these questions:
How does iCloud Photo Library (Beta) from yesterday's 8.1 update with Optimize iPhone Storage turned on work? (I'm on an iPhone 6)
It only stores your iPhone/iPad versions on your device, which is amazing. Why would you need anything else? It freed up around 8-10GB of space on my device which is amazing. But how does it work when you use it?
When you email it seems to ask you, when sending what size you want to send like it's always done. It gives you the original 2.4MB version. This works like I'd imagine and when I received the test email the photo was correct. In this case I assume it hits iCloud and sends it from there, not your actual device. (Like it doesn't re-download it to email it). Correct?
When posting to Facebook, does it do this same thing? Or is this something Facebook has to build into their iOS app in an update? Or does it just work? Correct?
When posting to Instagram, does it grab the right version. Obviously the phone optimized version should be fine, but when viewing on a Desktop version of Instagram at instagram.com, will it show the right version?
Sometimes I backup photos using Image Capture on the Mac. If I did that right now, would it only grab the iPhone versions? Obviously I can just test it but it'd be amazing if someone who knows these things could explain all of these use cases.
Do you need to be on
In closing it's more of how does this work? Does it work? Why wouldn't you want to use this feature if it saved space and made more sense? I guess I just would love some real clarity since not even the blogs are explaining how it works in every application.
In closing part 2. It does seem to work really well, it's just those fringe cases. I just viewed all my photos on https://beta.icloud.com/#photos and they're all there, easy download of the high res, delete, it deletes from my camera roll on my phone, it's amazing, it works, it's magic. Just tell me what issues there are with storing only low res iPhone on my device and if there are none, game on!
    Thanks!

And of those 4.3GB of backup, my Photo Library is 1.4GB.
So my question is, how do I prevent my Photo Library from being backed up to the cloud, since I already have a backup of it everytime I connect to iPhoto and it copies all those photos to my mac?
I don't know, sorry. It's supposed to work alongside Photos & iCloud, so that photos are stored only once. When it doesn't work you have a couple of options as I see it –
Delete the old backups on iCloud to hopefully start over (I don't like deleting the only backup of anything).
Forget about iCloud backups & use iTunes to backup instead, it might not be suitable if you have no computer etc.
    Buy more storage for iCloud.
I don't use iCloud backup, it bemuses me with issues like this, there is no easy way to resolve when it fails.
And one more question while we are at it...can I erase iphoto from my computer now that I have the new Photos app?
That is up to you. If you are happy you do not need it & have a backup of it go ahead & remove it. You can re-download it from the app store if it is already in your Mac App store account.

  • Does not work (does not synchronize photos) iCloud Photo Library on all devices

    hi there.
    Help, please.

If deleting a photo from any device deletes it from the iCloud Photo Library, "library" may not be the right word to describe its function. Surprised nobody else has commented on this. Am I the only one who got this wrong?
Your iCloud Photo Library is in iCloud, and the main purpose is to sync and update it across all your devices. Any change you do, including deleting, will sync across all devices syncing with iCloud Photo Library.
If you want to save space on your mobile devices use the "Optimize Storage" option. Then you will store only optimized thumbnails on your devices and keep the full resolution versions in iCloud.
    http://www.apple.com/osx/photos/
Fill your library, not your device.
iCloud Photo Library can help you make the most of the space on your Mac. When you choose “Optimize Mac Storage,” all your full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud in their original formats, with storage-saving versions kept on your Mac as space is needed. You can also optimize storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, so you can access more photos and videos than ever before

  • Pictures in iPhoto were not downloaded to iCloud Photo Library

I turned on the iCloud Photo Library (beta) on my iPad using iOS 8.1 and all my pictures in iPhoto were NOT put in the library.  I understood it would take several iterations (limits are 1,000 pictures/hour, maximum 10,000/day) but nothing has changed from the initial download.

I turned on the iCloud Photo Library (beta) on my iPad using iOS 8.1 and all my pictures in iPhoto were NOT put in the library.
iPhoto on your Mac does not (yet) work with iCloud Photo Library Beta. Right now, iCloud Photo lIbrary is limited to your mobile devices using iOS 8, see this link:   iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ
I understood it would take several iterations (limits are 1,000 pictures/hour, maximum 10,000/day) but nothing has changed from the initial download.
These limits are applying to the Photo Stream, not iCloud Photo Library.  (iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ)
Early next year iCloud Photo library should be available on your Mac as well, when the new Photos.app for Macs will be released.

  • Since iCloud Photo Library will not allow photos from iTunes iphoto to be up loaded ---how do I upload my photos to iCloud Photo Library?

I Have a 5s iPhone updated to 8.1---- have installed iCloud Photo Library---- will only upload 4oo of 21,000 photos--- will not upload any photos from iTunes. Since all 21,000 are in iPhoto's iTunes how do I get them to the icloud photo library.  As you know enabling iCloud Photo Library deletes all iTunes photos from the iPhone 5s.  Any ideas?

I Figured it out----- you can't upload iTunes iphotos to iCloud Photo Library from an iPhone!  Can't be done.  Must have a Mac to do it--- and it better not be an old one. Thanks apple!

  • IPhone not uploading photos to iCloud Photo Library.  Why?

I have 2 iPhones 6Plus's both fully updated.  I have enabled them both to use iCloud Photo Library.  One has synced up nicely, the other has not pulled any photos down from the cloud and says that it has 2,373 items to upload.  Any ideas what could be preventing it?  I have tried toggling iCloud Photo Library off and on with no success.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.  Thanks.

You may not like this solution, but it's the last thing that the apple care support could offer.
Let's say you have a bunch of photos stuck on syncing...
Connect iPhone to a computer via the cable, set iPhone to Airplane mode
Use Photos.app and select your iPhone in the sidebar (enable the sidebar first)
Select the photos you want to import
    Select "Import"
Now all your photos are downloaded from the iPhone and then uploaded to iCloud Photo library.
Delete the Photos on your iPhone manually, also from the "trash"
Disable airplane mode on the iPhone
Disable iCloud photo library in the settings of iCloud.
Log out of your iCloud account on the iPhone
Wait till all the photos on the iPhone are deleted as well... delete them manually, also from trash (make sure you have them all in the Photos app on your mac!)
    Restart your Phone
Log into your iCloud again and enable iCloud photo library.
    All the photos should sync.
I hope this helps, it helped me at least!

  • Uploaded photos to iCloud photo library are not sorted by their date

I have uploaded some photos from my digital camera memory card and they show up under "Today" with the upload time, and not the date time of the picture:
    Create Date                     : 2014:12:27 15:08:50
I would have expected the uploaded picture to be sorted by Moments in December 27, 2014 set of pictures.
Is there a way to have iCloud photo library put the photo in the right "Moment"?
    Thanks,

    No

  • Videos not appearing in my Apple TV library after activating iCloud photo library

    Hi
Ive activated iCloud photo library on all my devices (other than mac).  All seems to be syncing and playing correctly on my iPhone, iPad and iCloud.com however, when I view on my Apple TV none of the videos show in the list.  Ive updated the software to the latest version.
Am I doing something wrong perhaps?!
thanks for any help on the matter!
    Nick

    I'm not a 100% sure.
I had som many duplicates after my import to Photo (from iPhoto), and while some were zombie files, and others because I had screwed a little with my iPhoto package. But when I imported I did have several albums shared, and they were all duplicated.
I unshared all my albums, and I'm currently working on cleaning up my library before sharing again (so I have a good base to start from).
Here is what I think might be happening (or at least hope, otherwise it's a big bug): When you share an album... as far as iCloud is concerned, they are probably treated as separate items in the cloud. Which means Photos is creating a copy. I have the feeling that if you delete the original in your library, the copy you have shared will remain.
But the thing that probably shouldn't happen, is that Years/Collections/Moments is displaying both the master version you had originally, and the version that is shared.
Remember... these are only my thoughts, since I'm not at the point of testing this yet.

  • ICloud photo library has not updated in 73 days

    "Connect to wifi to update"
Phone is rarely not connected to Wifi, obviously.
    Anyone else getting this?

    Hello Welles13,
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. iCloud Photo Library beta requires a Wi-Fi connection to upload photos and videos:
iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT6378
When do photos and videos upload to iCloud Photo Library?
When you turn on iCloud Photo Library on your devices, your photos and videos will begin to upload after you connect to the Internet using Wi-Fi. You can see the status on the Photos tab and pause upload for one day from Settings > iCloud > Photos.
Depending on your Internet connection speed, the time it takes for your photos and videos to appear on all of your devices might vary.
    Cheers,
    Matt M.
