ICloud-photos app taking up more space than on my device

My iPhone 4S running  iOS 8.0.2 is stating that my iCloud 5gb is full, I go to check how much my photo app takes up and it displays it takes up 3.2gb
Shown in this screenshot at settings>General>Usage>Manage Storage>Photos & Camera
I then went to my icloud storage tab and it states I have 5.1gb worth of photos and videos
To get there I went Settings>iCloud>Storage>Manage Storage>Under backups my only backed up device which currently took up 3.3gb
This issue started happening as i OTA my device to iOS 8.0.0 and I have never been told my iCloud is full as I'd always check my iClouds storage and at the time I updated it had 1.6gb free I have about 100mb of other storage from apps and their documents. And this is my only device being backed up as i deleted an iPod Touch 4G a while ago off icloud before iOS 8 where this problem started.
Any help appreciated as I love the ability of iCloud and how it backs up my storage.

I believe I have solved the problem! Last night I thought I'd failed because it was still showing 5.3 GB needed to back up photos alone. Note that the last successful backup, before iOS 8, was only 3.5 GB total. I certainly have not gone on a photo bonanza since then, so there's no reason they should suddenly take up so much space. Anyway, this morning I decided to just turn off the photo library backups so at least everything else would be backed up.
But when I did that...
The photo backup dropped back down to 2.7 GB. I turned it back on and it stayed the same size. I have no idea if this worked only because I previously turned Photo Stream on and then off again, but if yours is turned off as well you might want to try it in that order. (BTW, I was incorrect before--turning Photo Stream on and off did not cause me to lose photos I actually want to keep in the iCloud backup. As we can see here, it backs up the existing photos on the device separate from Photo Stream.)

Why are my apps taking up more space than what the appstore says they will? Like were talking a half a GB more than what it should.
For example the app Modern Combat 4 says it should only be 1.58 GB on the appstore but when i go into settings>general>usage it says it takes up 2.0 GB.
Ive tried deleting the apps and then reinstalling them but they still take up so much more space.
This happens for multiple apps of mine. Some I have never even opened before.
    I have an ipod touch (4th Gen)(32GB).
I link to a mac computer.
    I have IOS version 6.1.3
I noticed this a long time ago but didnt need the space, Now i need the space!!
    Please help!!

Because you see the file size of the compuressed file. The file gets expanded when installed and that takes up more space. Also, data is kept in the app.

  • Songs taking up more space than they should?

Well, I have an iPod mini & I have 149 songs on my iTunes, but it says its taking up 3.04 GB I pretty sure it shouldn't, but does anyone know if this is normal and if I can fix it? I don't have any artwork or anything either.

You might want to convert them all to Apple Lossless instead of MP3's or WAV's or whatever. I haven't noticed any loss of sound quality on any of my music and the files are really compact. Worst case is at some point in the future, I go back and reimport my CD's if I think the sound quality's then better. Also - when you do that - convert - it'll have two copies of the songs in your library. The original & the converted version. You can either leave them both showing in your iTunes library, or move the larger versions out to another location. Just have the library show you duplicates, add a column for size or type, and select the larger versions & click Delete. It'll ask you if you want to send the files to the recycle bin or leave them on your hard disk - that's your call. I'd probably be inclined to leave them all right there - if you need the bigger copy at some point, just navigate to the folder in your iTunes folder using Windows Explorer or similar and you'll see both versions. But iTunes and your iPod will only see the more compact converted versions.

  • Movie taking up more space than the size

Hello. I published a movie in imovie to the media gallery in HD. It is a long video, so I knew it would take up a lot of space. It is listed as 5 GB in my imovie project folder. However, when I "show package contents" of the movie, the actual size of the 720 movie is only 1.3 gb. All of the other folders listed in the contents are just a few MB. Any idea why this is using 5gb of not only my hard drive, but of my Mobile Me space, when it seems like the video should only be using 1.5 GB.
You can see the video here, but obviously it takes some time to buffer.
    Thanks.

  • Since syncing with iCloud all my photos in my photo app are much lower resolution than they were before. Can anyone explain what happened an how I might get back my high resolution photos?

Since syncing with iCloud all my photos in my photo app are much lower resolution than they were before. Can anyone explain what happened an how I might get back my high resolution photos?

    Thanks again.
Unfortunately I don't have iPhoto (running Windows).
    I did, however, figure out a work-around.
I created an empty directory on my computer, and told iTunes to "Sync Photos from..." that empty directory. This deleted all the photos from the iPod (go figure).
I then set the "Sync Photos from..." dropdown back to directory that actually contained all my photos, and sync'd again.
And, yes, they all loaded onto the iPod at their better, higher resolution.
Thanks for all your help. Photos (and wallpaper) are perfect, again

  • Layout taking more space than necessary...

Hi folks...my applet has two panels inside it arranged in a flowlayout. The first panel is a 5 row x 1 col gridlayout, and the second is working fine. The problem with the first one is that that it is taking more space than necessary and going out the bottom of the applet. Now if I do this in appletviewer, resizing the window by a few pixels will make it relayout the panel and everything looks fine, but of course you can't ask people to do that =) What's the problem here? I've tried validating both the applet and the problem panel, and tried invalidating it first. Any ideas? thanks!

Here is the first half of it...it has all the relevant info. I took out the validate stuff 'cause it wasn't helping.

  • ICloud photo library taking an eternity to upload.

Is anyone else experiencing the new iCloud Photo Library taking an unbelievable amount of time to upload photos from their Mac?  Granted, I've got a lot of photos to upload - somewhere around 4000 -- but so far I've been uploading my pics to iCloud for well into 4-hours and the number of photos "uploading" (according to my iMac's iCloud "ticker") hasn't changed in over 2-hours.  It's been stuck on the same number of photos "uploading" for these last 2-hours and shows no progress at all since then.  Anyone have a clue as to what gives?

    Csound,
I got over 10.000 photo's till now saved at dropbox. It's over 100 Gb. Point is that the upload in dropbox is within the range of a few (2-3) hours while at iCloud it took me more than 24 hours until only 5-6 Gb is uploaded. Same computer same network and a glass fiber provider with really fast internet. So iCloud will cost me weeks before photos are synced.
Like I said, by far the worst cloud service. It is like being back at the 14k4 modem era. This isn't Apple standard or is it the new standard?

  • "Manually manage music and videos" takes up more space than syncing?

    Hello all,
I fear that I am just stupid and unseeing an obvious answer to this query, but ask I shall, because it is frustrating me to no end.
I recently downloaded a few audiobooks from my local library to listen to on my iPod Touch; the app in question requires that you "manually manage music and videos" rather than syncing. Fine.
I switch over to iTunes, check the box, and now my music--without changing anything, mind--is now taking up an additional 1.8 (or more) gigs on my iPod. I toggle the option to "manually manage" on and off, and with it "on", my music takes up more space than with it "off", even though it's the same music, same podcasts.
Can someone please explain to me why syncing manually takes up more space than syncing automatically and where the extra gigs are coming from? There's not that much audio on my iPod--1.52 gb of music, 1.97 gb of podcasts and .69 gb of apps--which only adds up to 4.18 gb, and on an 8g touch, should leave me with about 4 gb of "wiggle room", so to speak, rather than .27 gb.
    Help, please!

iTunes will normally put just one copy of each file on the iPod and link it to multiple playlists. If your iPod's database has been corrupted at some point however, there may be unattached copies of your meadia from earlier sync attempts, taking up space on the drive, but not visible in the library. How much space does iTunes report for Other? Excluding files placed manually & intentionally on the iPod, "other" is typically an overhead of 1%-2% of the size of the media and represents the iPod database, artwork, games etc. If you have significantly larger amounts of "other" then you will need to restore your iPod in order to reclaim the space.

  • Time machine need more space than necessary.

    Hi.
Can anyone help. I have a two 1TB external hard drives one backs the other up. Until now it has been fine but suddenly time machine has decided theres not enough room even though there the same size drives. Ive deleted the backup drive and the time machine preferences but it still wont work. I have one drive with 930GB on and time machine says it needs 1.1TB of space. Why dose it need an extra 170GB. Help?
    Thanks

Since Time Machine keeps copies of previous versions of things you've changed or deleted, it needs much more space than the data it's backing-up.
The extra 170 GB is for "padding" -- workspace on the backup volume, and in case the original estimate isn't accurate, or more files are changed or added while the backup is running.
#1 in the link Carolyn supplied explains this a bit more, and recomends that your backup drive be 2-3 times the size of the data it's backing-up.

  • Movie files take up more space than they should

Hi! I'm new to iDVD, and I wanted to take about 20 .mp4 files and put them on a DVD that a DVD player hooked to my TV will be able to read. The combined size of all the files is under 4GB and will fit on a burnable DVD. But when I drag them into iDVD, it only lets me have like 5 before it says it is full. Why is this happening? Why should the video take up more space than the file's actual size? If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it!

iDVD works on time and NOT on RAW file size!!
All video is converted to MPG-2 by the encoding process in iDVD. With a single layer disc, you can get UP TO 60 minutes of content in Best Performance mode and UP TO 120 minutes in Best Quality mode.

  • Firevault: "Your homefolder is using more space than required"

I would like to ask for some help. After every log-out, Firevault tells me that "Your homefolder is using more space than required" (or something between that lines). What can I do?
    Thank you for the help.

    Hi Morales,
Unless you have a need for military-level security, FileVault is overkill. It slows your computer because all sorts of cache and preference files are repeatedly encrypted and decrypted, and because filevault is saving all your files in a big "container file," disk and directory errors that would otherwise be minor can cause massive data loss on a filevault-ed computer.
To keep SOME files secure, an encrypted, password protected disk image is a better idea. You can make encrypted disk images with Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility. Do File > New > Disk Image from Folder.

  • Is it possible to add more space to a 16GB device?

is it possible to add more space to a 16GB device?

No. Storage capacity in iPads or iPhones or iPods is not upgradeable.  You get what you buy, and that's it.
If you need extra storage there are wireless external harddrives that work with iDevices.

  • Photo library albums and folders taking up more space

If you create albums and folders on photo library it appears to duplicate the pictures and take up more space.  Is there any way to avoid this since you can't group pictures otherwise?

Change your import settings to 128 AAC (assuming that's what you want - I'd choose MP3s, personally, since they will work in other programs and portable devices).
The previous default is AAC encode, High Quality (128kbps)
Then you can just right-click on selections and choose "Create AAC version". It will say "Create MP3 version" if you decide to use thoe import settings.
Of course you already have an AAC version, but itunes will convert it to the lower rates. I just tried it on the free single of the week, "Boarded Doors" and the file size went down from 6.9MB to 3.2MB.
You can choose to convert an album at a time - you don't need to do it song-by-song.
I suppose you could do your entire library in one fell swoop, but frankly with the size of my library, I think itunes would crash at some point. Also my hard drive would fill up. ; )
Note - this makes a COPY and does not replace the original file. So you'll need to delete the originals and make sure they go to the recycle bin.
Still, it's faster than feeding all those CDs in the drive!
So that is another reason for doing one CD at a a time, to make sure the copies get made and that the duplciates get gone.

  • OLAP taking 5 time more space than RDBMS?

    Hello,
I have been investigating Oracle's OLAP capabilities for about 2 weeks now in an effort to determine whether OLAP would be a feasible solution for my company's data warehousing needs.
I have created an extremely simple analytic workspace that is based on a single relational fact table. The fact table contains both the dimension values (integers) and the measuers (floats). There are a total of about 300,000 dimension values all of which reference measures (the data is perfectly dense).
I created a dimension and a data cube using the Enterprise Manager OLAP interface. Next, I created the analytic workspace using the Analytic Workspace Manager wizard. This AW building step took an extraordinary amount of time considering the simplicity of the data. In fact, I started it on a Friday afternoon, monitored it for about 2 hours, and it still hadn't finished, so I let it run over the weekend (for this reason, I am not sure how much time exactly it took, but it's definitely quite a few hours). Is this normal? Copying the relational table takes 10 seconds, and I find it hard to believe that building an AW with the same data would take so much time.
Finally, coming back on Monday I see that the AW was created successfully. I went into the tablespace map to look at how big the binary blob is. To my great surprise, the AW was taking up about 5 times more extents than my relational table (contrary to what I've read so far about OLAP and its supposedly very storage-efficient data cubes).
I was wondering if anybody could advise me on what I could have done wrong and/or inefficiently? Am I missing something here, or is OLAP really consuming much more space comapred to relational tables?
    Thanks!
    Dobo Radichkov

    Gotcha.
Well, here are a few ideas:
    1) There is a bug in the 9i OLAP where dimension loads take WAY too long. I have a dimension with approx 77,000 members. On 9i, it took hours to load. On 10g 10.1.0.3 it loads in under 1 minute. You might want to open a TAR, the bug was something about one of the patch sets not being applied right
    2) From a space standpoing, I wouldn't worry about this too much. When the AW wizard creates an "empty" workspace, it already has lots of items in it that support the metadata, etc. Also, there is the concept of "free pages" that get allocated but end up not being used (they are "temp")
To check this out, attach your AW and then fire up the OLAP worksheet. To see "free" pages vs. "used" pages, do the following:
    show aw(pages)
    show aw(freepages)
One last thing you can do, to see the size of all items in the AW:
    attach AWname ro first
    limit name to all
    sort name d obj(disksize)
    rpr w 40 obj(disksize)
This will show the "relative" size of the items, I think in "pages" (to see how big a page is just do a
    show aw(pagesize)
    Hope this helps!

  • ICloud Photo Library taking up too much space

I am using iCloud Photo library, and noticed that it was taking up too much of my iCloud memory. I have 4 photos and no videos, and that uses around 300 MB of storage. What can I do to change this? Is this a bug?

If I upload my entire Photo Library to iCloud Drive, then delete photos from my Library (on my computer), can I still access those deleted photos on my iCloud Drive?
An iPhoto library will not work properly on iCloud Drive. It will be corrupted by the syncing.  An iPhoto Library needs to be on a locally connected volume or on your system drive.  Move your iPhoto Library to a small portable drive as described here:  Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library
A second problem is, that you cannot save space on your computer by uploading to iCloud Drive, because iCloud will keep local shadow copies of all items in your user library. Moving files to include Drive will not save any space at all.  (iCloud Drive FAQ)
