ICloud: Pros & Cons Please

I'm one of the duffers still on MobileMe, for no better reason than I've been too busy to make the switch. After years of dumping money and time into that lousy service, I'm dubious about going with Apple again for syncing/backup. When it worked (and mostly it didn't), it was a huge faff. I could never completely rely on it, so I had to have other fail-safes, including DropBox, SugarSync, and a Time Machine. As a result I've got bits and bobs of data stored all over the shop. My main conclusion from the experience was: try to live with one machine, as syncing is too much trouble.
Is iCloud better? Here are my needs. I'm an academic, so I have large amounts of data; mainly photos, music and documents. I have a three year-old iMac and a one year-old MacBook Air, both running Snow Leopard, and a one-day old iPhone 4s. My iMac needs a good weeding out, as it is packed with massive quantities of field data (like large-file NEF photos), much of which I don't need. I do have a large music collection, which would be tough to pare down as part of my research is ethnomusicological. As it stands, there is no way I could sync content across all three machines as the other two don't have the space. Nor am I sure I'd want to.
I'm not bothered about the money for upgrading to Lion, nor purchasing extra storage - I already fork out for DropBox, Zotero, Evernote etc. I'm more worried about my time, and the reliability of the service. I've already ditched tons of silly third-party time-wasters from my iPhone and am so far working pretty well with the native ones, especially now that Siri has come along (it's been one day; I'm still in love). I do use iTunes and the iCloud Match and re-download functions seem useful. Photostream I could take or leave. Documents synced across all devices would be brilliant, assuming it works generally like DropBox does. Calendar/Contacts/Mail/Notes/Reminders sync must work. A simple and reliable Backup service would be the holy grail.
So, for those of you using iCloud - is it worth it? Does it do what Apple says it does? Could this replace some of the other services/procedures I'm using? Beyond initial set-up, how much time does it take to maintain?
Any advice appreciated.

If you plan on updating your Macs to OS X Lion, you can use some trickery to get iCloud to sync any document between Macs only. As for syncing documents between your iPhone and a Mac version of the same app, the iCloud API has not been widely implemented, so right now it mainly works between the desktop and mobile versions of iWorks. Hopefully that will be opened up across a lot more apps, it could prove to be quite handy. The only thing that may stand in your way is the free 5Gb limit, but you can pay to have that raised. Not as good of value as Dropbox though, but when the mobile and desktop versions of more apps start interacting with each other; the value will be realized a bit more. Once you set it up, there's literally no maintanence; everything is automatic. It's too soon to put reliability through its paces, but I have yet to have a hickup in service past the initial setup phase (that has its glitches and ways to fix them, took me about an hour or two, because some switches didn't get flipped when I turned off syncing through iTunes; my contacts, calender, and mail were not syncing. Fixed now). I have all info syncing flawlessly between two Macs, PCs, and an iPod Touch. Also, for good measure, I duplicate calenders, contacts, and mail to Google in case I want to start using Android.
As for iTunes in the cloud, I read about a limit of 25000 songs. Now, I don't know if that is the number of songs you are allowed to upload in case iTunes can't find them in the store, or if that's the hard limit of songs you can transfer. Depending on how many songs you have, this may be a problem. Seems like a great service though (I'm not on it).
I would look into switching, but

  • Backup iPad to iCloud pros cons

    Dear Common Wisdom:
What are the pros and cons to backing up my iPad to the iCloud as opposed to the computer?
    Thanks!
    cj

Ease of Mind, that is the most thing.
if you back it up and your harddisks become defect then your data is lost.
Backups in the cloud = Apple takes care of them, your data is spreaded across computers all across the globe, limiting data-loss to a minimum ( Data is accessible by only you of course )
Having a new idevice in the future, fill in your Apple-ID and your backup in the cloud will be beamed down to your new empty device, having all the data on it that Apple sits on. Think that is not a bad idea.

  • Pros / Cons of Running APEX on separate server

Seeking feedback/thoughts on this general question.
I am maintaining an APEX application that utilizes multiple schemas all residing in the same database as APEX. I am wondering what might be the pros / cons of putting APEX in a separate database and server.
Would this necessarily yield security or performance benefits (or costs)?
How many changes would need to be made in the APEX configuration and code? I have read here in the forum that at a minimum database links would need to be created to the utilized schemas on the other server, with appropriate grants. What else?
    Thanks.

Please help us by putting your first name into your profile. Thanks.
So what you want to do is have your application (and Application Express) access tables in a remote database. Yes, you can do that and database links are required.
This almost always has negative performance impact and sometimes results in things not working due to database version differences, especially with down-level Oracle versions.
It also makes application development more difficult if the Application Builder doesn't have local access to application parsing schemas. You can work around most of these problems by creating local views of remote tables, but I don't think 100% of the wizards and some SQL Workshop functionality are amenable to remote schema access. So I don't recommend it. What is your motivation to do this?
By the way, "servers" don't matter in this discussion, it's all about databases.

  • Using Business area for External Reporting-Pros & Cons?

    Dear Freinds,
We are a Retail Business Group half way through SAP IS Retail implementation. We have 8 legal entities, currently their complete Annual Financials are being made & audited separately. In SAP the structure is that there is Single Co. Code & transactions will be seggregated by Business Area (made manadatory for data entry) and Annual Accounts will be drawn up using Business Area.
This to me does not seem to be the right structure. I have joined the group recently, I will be much thankful to you all if you please help me list the Pros & Cons of using Business Area for external reporting.

Dan: <i>For management reporting you may not want to post eliminations between companies where the business areas are the same.</i>
If the Business wants to see the eliminations between companies, within the same business area, as part of BEx reports, what should I do? They do not want to execute consolidation functions in UCMON but just want to see how the eliminations have taken place between companies with in the same business area.
Dan: <i>As long as the partner company and partner business area are consistently included for the intercompany transactions, the eliminations between Legal and Management will agree at the top-level of each hierarchy.</i>
Have I to introduce one more InfoObject Partner Business Area in the data basis and assign the role Sub-assignment once again?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Pros/Cons of replicating to files versus staging tables

I am new to GoldenGate and am trying to figure out pros/cons of replicating to flatfiles to be processed by an ETL tool versus replicating directly to staging tables. We are using GoldenGate to source data from multiple transaction systems to flatfiles and then using Informatica to load thousands of flatfiles to our ODS staging. Trying to figure out if it would be better just to push data directly to staging tables. I am not sure which is better in terms of recovery, reconcilliation, etc. Any advice or thoughts on this would be appreciated.

    Hi,
My Suggestion would be to push the data from multiple source systems directly to staging table and then populate target system using ELT tool like ODI.
Oracle Data Integrator can be combined with Oracle Golden Gate (OGG) , that provides a cross-platform data replication and changed data capture. Oracle Golden Gate worked in a similar way to Oracle’s asynchronous change data capture but handles greater volumes and works across multiple database platforms.
    Source -> Staging -> Target
ODI-EE supports all leading data warehousing platforms, including Oracle Database, Teradata, Netezza, and IBM DB2. This is complemented by the Oracle GoldenGate architecture, which decouples source and target systems, enabling heterogeneity of databases as well as operating systems and hardware platforms. Oracle GoldenGate supports a wide range of database versions for Oracle Database, SQL Server, DB2 z/Series and LUW, Sybase ASE, Enscribe, SQL/MP and SQL/MX, Teradata running on Linux, Solaris, UNIX, Windows, and HP NonStop platforms as well as many data warehousing appliances including Oracle Exadata, Teradata, Netezza, and Greenplum. Companies can quickly and easily involve new or different database sources and target systems to their configurations by simply adding new Capture and Delivery processes.
ODI-EE and Oracle GoldenGate combined enable you to rapidly move transactional data between enterprise systems:
Real-time data. - Immediately capture, transform, and deliver transactional data to other systems with subsecond latency. Improve organizational decision-making through enterprise-wide visibility into accurate, up-to-date information.
Heterogeneous. - Utilize heterogeneous databases, packaged or even custom applications to leverage existing IT infrastructure. Use Knowledge Modules to speed the time of implementation.
Reliability. - Deliver all committed records to the target, even in the event of network outages. Move data without requiring system interruption or batch windows. Ensure data consistency and referential integrity across multiple masters, back-up systems, and reporting databases.
High performance with low impact. - Move thousands of transactions per second with negligible impact on source and target systems. Transform data at high performance and efficiency using E-LT. Access critical information in real time without bogging down production systems.
Please refer to below links for more information on configuration of ODI-OGG.

  • Oracle Best Practices Discussion Pros/Cons of using Synonyms

Please share your experience given the Pros/Cons of Developing Enterprise Database Applications using public and private Synonyms.
My recommendation to developers on my team is to avoid using Public Synonyms in their code and instead Fully Qualify the database object by schema owner.
Pros: When you drop a schema, you do not drop the public synonyms that they created. Therefore if you have to use synonym, make it private and not public.
    Please share your experience!

    Fahd Mirza wrote:
Well I rarely use public synonyms and that only case of db links. For example, I have a scenario, in which I have hooked up a MS SQLSERVER database with Oracle database through Heterogenous Services. I am accessing the SQLSERVER table in real time, through HS, in Oracle in real time, and then from this Oracle environment I have created db links to many other interested databases. In those interested database, I have created public synonyms over those dblinks.
It's so transparent for the interested databases. But I have documented this whole configuration in great detail for any upcoming DBA, just in case I leave, or expire or anything. Sounds interesting - this might be worth 'cleaning' and publishing to OTN's Articles. • Pros & Cons on J2EE Table GenerationTypes

    Hi All,
I am particularly interested in using Glassfish with MySQL and would like to find out which of these options best suit my requirement while not being locked (trapped) into a vendor specific environment going forward.
Below is table generation strategies available in J2EE:
    public enum GenerationType
    TABLE, SEQUENCE, IDENTITY, AUTO
What is the pros and crons between them?
Your suggestion would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jack

Could you please breif the pros & cons of both operations...
    DELETE x FROM
    dbo.table_a x WITH(ROWLOCK)
    INNER JOIN dbo.table_b y WITH(NOLOCK) ON x.id=y.id
    DELETE x FROM
    dbo.table_a x WITH(NOLOCK)
    INNER JOIN dbo.table_b y WITH(NOLOCK) ON x.id=y.id
    Thank you.
what pros and cons do you want. Table hints should mostly be avoided specially the NOLOCK hint it should never be used. Its bad coding.
The Rowlock is used to change locking behavior of SQL Server it would try to take ROW lock even if page lock is required.
The pros and cons would depend on scenario.

  • Pros & Cons of Using SAP PI Interfaces for Report Generation

    Hi Guru's
    I have a Scenario's like
I have to generate a customized report in SAP with the main data's available in SAP ECC and some required data available in the Legacy System.
I want to know the Pros & cons of using SAP PI RFC/Proxy adapter interface to get the data from the legacy system for each time the user execute the report in SAP ECC.
    Thanks in Advance

There are couple of "dimensions" to consider in your PI interface design. For exemple when you are running the sizing exercise (Since we are considering adding a net new interface), you will need to capture specific information about new interface.i.e. S/A, adapters, frequency, avg payload size. etc..Note that the last two attributes will be hard to size properly in this case since you can't predict how frequent the end user will run the report which will impact the latency time required to pull the data. Latency will affect the user experience as visible side affect and definitely the SLA for other interfaces running at the same time.
On the other hand, the data you are trying to retrieve from the legacy won't be used for transactional purpose but for the end user to pull KPIs from the system which can affect ECC as well. You may end up doing lot hot fixes for your report (Assuming that the report is a medium complexity code)
There are other factors to consider but let's consider these are the major one.
    Cheers,
    F
