ICloud sync questions

I've got a MBP running Lion 10.7.2, a first generation iPad and an iPhone 4S, both running iOS 5.0.
I have set both the iPad and the iPhone to sync AND backup via iCloud.
If I create a new iCal event on my MBP, it may show up immediately on one device, and not for a few minutes on the other.  It's not always consistent which one gets it first.  So my first question is ... what exactly is happening here?  How quickly does my MBP send the new event to iCloud, and how quickly is it supposed to sync to my devices?  Is iCloud supposed to push the event to the devices as soon as it gets it, or do the devices "check in" every so often and pull down any changes?
For instance, a few minutes ago, I deleted a "test" event in iCal on my iPad.  The event still shows up on my iPhone and MBP.  So I closed iCal on the iPhone, re-opened it, and the deleted event was gone.  Is the iPhone waiting for me to close the app and re-open it?
Same with the MBP - the event stayed there in iCal until I quit iCal and re-opened it.  Then it disappeared.
Is this how iCloud sync is supposed to work?

  • IMessage and iCloud Syncing Question

We have four iOS devices in our family, all synced to one Mobile Me / iCloud account. We need to share calendars and contacts. I'm in the process of upgrading all of them to iOS 5 right now.
Do we all need separate iCloud accounts to make iMessage work? How do I set it up so we each get individual messages?
Is there any way I could have each iOS device synced to two iCloud accounts? One for contacts / calendars and one for iMessage?
I guess I'm just not clear on how iMessage works. Is it attached to the iCloud account, or does Apple somehow magically know what device to send the messages to based off your contact list?
I've never set up Facetime either. Would I set it up similarly?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Huh? You're just not settings things up properly:
That's because y'all are using the Apple ID for iCloud/iMessage & FaceTime.
While you can continue to use your ID for iTunes content, for everything else everyone needs their own ID
The Apple ID needs to be a verified email address. Once you have an email address, that can be verified, go here & create the IDs:
    https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/wa/createAppleId
Then on each phone, turn off Contacts, Calendars, etc. for iCloud. You'll be prompted to keep the data or delete it from the phone, then turn off iMessage, FaceTime & delete the iCloud account...Settings>iCloud...scroll down...delete account. Then, setup iCloud using the new Apple IDs, turn on iMessage & Facetime.
This will have no affect on the ID y'all share for iTunes content, & you can continue to do so.

  • ITunes/iCloud syncing question

I sync my iPhone thru iCloud and can't figure out where the playlists are. Seems like both my playlist and my daughter's get downloaded to my iPhone instead of just mine.

Yes. The music sync is one way -computer to iphone.
The exception is itunes purchases: Open itunes, plug in iphone, do not sync, click File>Transfer Purchases
Have you failed to maintain a backup copy of your computer?
If so, then also enter at least one uniques contact and calendar entry into the new computer. When you sync, you should get the option to merge the data.
Not maintaining a backup copy is very unwise.

  • ICloud syncing question

    Hi,
If I have two iphones and an ipad on my itunes account, when i upgrade to OS5 and set up icloud, will I be able to set one of the phones and the ipad to update contacts, but have one of them excluded from updating and being updated by the others ?
    Thanks

Yes, you will be able to. After you update to iOS 5, on the iPhone that you do NOT want updating, you can go to Settings > iCloud, and then turn off Calendars, Mail, Contacts, etc. and also go to Settings > Store and turn off Automatic Downloads for apps, books and music (of course, you can keep those on if you like )

  • Is there any way to get iCloud sync (iPhone + 2 Macs) without wi-fi?

We have two Macs (MacBook Pro, iMac) and one iPhone 4; OSs up-to-date (Lion, iOS5).  Our only routine access to the internet is via the mobile phone 3G network for the iPhone, and via a 3G USB stick/dongle for the Macs, also using the mobile phone network.  We do NOT have access to the internet via a local wi-fi link to a router (whether ADSL or cable).  This is in Melbourne, Australia, btw.
Question: is there any way at all that we can get syncing of contacts and calendars for all three devices? - preferably automatic, ideally real-time whenever a device could see the internet.  With syncing set, there seem to be some random updates (and duplication) between devices, but it seems that normally syncing is enabled only when the device sees the internet via a local wi-fi link to a router, and that's what we don't have.  (We can't trundle the iMac to an internet cafe either!)
Understood that a local sync would be possible via iTunes for one of the two computers and the iPhone, provided they could see each other wirelessly - but there's a second computer...
E-mail no problem; we use IMAP.
    All suggestions gratefully received!

    Thanks for this quick response.
I thought I had established by searching forums that iCloud sync routinely requires wi-fi.  I can see from Apple documentation that backup does; and that Documents and Data (in iOS) has a switch to permit/deny syncing using a cellular network.  What I have not found is a one-stop-shop on the Apple site that says which iCloud facilities are supposed to work with cellular/3G networks and which not.  Can you point us to such a list?
Regarding our own problem: the missing link appears to be the download of new entries from the cloud to either of the Macs, the Mac being connected to the internet via 3G.  For example a new calendar appointment entered on the Mac duly appears on the iPhone; but a new appointment entered on the iPhone fails to appear on the Mac.  (If it is re-entered on the Mac, it gets duplicated on the iPhone.)  Checking the iCloud website show that a new iPhone appointment is getting as far as the cloud; but apparently no further.
I think you'll agree that this makes iCloud calendar syncing next to useless.
This may not (as you imply) be caused by the use of the 3G connection.  However in the two households in our family we have one with wi-fi and essentially the same setup, except that the iPhone is a 3GS.  In the wi-fi setup, a new appointment entered on the iPhone calendar promptly shows up on a Mac.
If the sync problem has nothing to do with the mode of internet connection, how might it be cured?

  • Network home folders: iCloud password question re-appears at every logon

    Hello,
Is there any way to enable iMessage and Facetime together with Network home folders. Im using Mavericks server (Directory services enabled) and two Mavericks clients. Every time a user that was using machine A logs on to machine B the iClouds password prompt re-appears and subsequently security questions are sent to iOS devices that a new device was added.
Is there a way to circumvent this? I think I tried once in combination with mobile home folders. However, even if I excluded iMessage/Facetime system files from syncing, questions still re-appeared.
The more iCloud services are tied into the system, the more you would like to use them; even if you are using network home folders.
    Regards,
    Thomas

How is it that iCloud syncs Mac with iPhone / iPad / IOS, or vice versa, but not Mac with Mac .. Any application that synchronizes all? It will be poissible with Mountain Lion?

  • ICloud sync with Outlook deleted recent and upcoming appointments

I recently decided to enable iCloud Sync on my iPhone, and more recently I also enabled it on Outlook.  It had been a while since I synced my phone to my computer, but the result ended up being that when I enabled iCloud Sync in Outlook, it deleted all appointments I had scheduled since I last synced to my computer.
Is there any way to get these back?

  • ICloud sync refreshes every minute.

Numbers in iCloud sync refreshes literally every minute, prompting 'Resolve Conflict' message. Very frustrating. How can I reset to daily sync, or manually?

Your only options are to back up once every 24 hours when the phone is connected to your charger, locked and connected to wifi; or to start an immediate backup by tapping Back Up Now.
I don't understand your second question.  What do you mean by "... but every certain time some of the contacts are missing"?

  • IPad 2 Sync Question

I have an iMac running snow leopard and my wife surprised me with an iPad 2 for Christmas.  I first synced using iTunes and then switched to syncing with iCloud but soon found syncing contacts from the address book and my calendar doesn't work in snow leopard - no option for iCloud sync on the iMac.  I'll go to syncing via wifi but have a question.  I would like to remove my contacts and calendars from iCloud so it won't cause a problem if or when I upgrade to lion.  If I delete my contacts and calendars on the iPad, it should delete them in the cloud, correct?  I would then shut off my icloud sync options on the iPad.  Could I then just sync up again in iTunes and then make setting changes to sync using wifi?
Thanks, I did a search and couldn't find a direct answer.

I believe that your assumptions are correct but the only way to find out is to try it.  The worst that will happen is that you'll see double entries on the iPad and, if that happens, you simply delete the iCloud calendar from the iPad.
    Edit...
In fact, I think that you want to delete the iCloud calendar anyway.

  • Will iCloud sync all email accounts connected to the mail application?

Will iCloud sync all email accounts connected to the mail application?

The questions on mail and MobileMe are ones that I have, too. But another question/issue that I have is the inability for my iPhone to separate calendars for me. I have 2 work calendars and one personal calendar. Plus I have a family calendar. I would really like to be able to look at my calendars on the iPhone and see what I have for personal, family and business. I was able to do this with my old Blackberry.
When I looked at the video for MobileMe, it seemed to accomplish this on the computer (mac or pc) but I don't remember seeing the iPhone give good distinction between different calendars (i.e. syncing different calendars or separating them by colors).
    Any thoughts?

  • HT4915 iTunes Match vs iCloud Sync

When iTunes Match is activated, can I choose to keep the music files on any of the devices associated  with my account (the way iCloud sync works)?
Ocassionally I'm way-off grid and still want to be able to access my music. I'm hesitant to commit to an all-streamins solution. I want the music files on my iMac and iPhone updated with ICloud sync and have my tablets use iCloud Match to conserve disc space. Is this possible?

When you activate iTunes Match from your computer your computer's library gets matched or uploaded to the iTunes Match server. If you activate iTunes Match on your iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad you will see all of your matched an uploaded music appear in the music app on that device. Songs that are downloaded locally on the device will appear without a cloud symbol meaning they are physically located on the device, can be played and not use data, and if you go off the grid, they will still show up and be playable. Songs that are in iTunes Match but not on your device will have a cloud icon. You can play these songs at any time but they are being played from the server, so if you connection is bad or you go offline, you may not see them or they may not load well.  In the end, the answer to you question is yes.  If you activate iTunes Match, you can choose which songs or playlists are downloaded locally to a device and which ones aren't. • Will photos in iCloud sync to my iPhone or will photos on my iPhone sync to iCloud?

My set up is I have all my photos on iCloud with full resolution photos and videos synced to my Macbook while optimized photos and videos are synced to my iPhone.
I saw the amount of photos and videos on my Macbook is missing some photos and videos when compared to my iPhone.  When I checked my iPhone, I noticed some videos didn't have a thumbnail but instead a white square.  When I tried to play the video, nothing plays even when I leave it sitting there for a long while.
After some searching around, an article said  the photo list was corrupted and if you delete 3 certain files on the iPhone, the photos list would rebuild itself.  I did that, and it did rebuild itself.
However, around half of my photos were gone.  I think it's because my iPhone was set to optimized so it only rebuilt with the full resolution photos left on my iPhone.
So, my question is, if my iPhone syncs with the photos on iCloud, would my iPhone download all my missing photos?  Or will my iCloud sync to my iPhone so my iCloud would also be missing half of my photos?

    Greetings,
What version of the MacOS is running on the PowerBook?
    Cheers.

  • Icloud synced devices and streaming music

Please excuse my novice questions, but i need help understanding how iCloud influences my data usage. I have iPhone 5, iPad and MacBook 2011. I have checked the iCloud sync so that all devices talk. Also, i signed up for iCloud back up - $25 or whatever it is for the annual fee.
When i listen to music from my iPhone (which i do frequently at my job) - am i hearing music that's native to my iPhone OR am i "streaming" every song from the cloud and incurring data fees?
Also, when i signed up for iCloud, did it copy all of my music from my computer Hard Drive or is that music still there?
Lastly, i signed up for NPR Podcast and somehow i don't think it's actually "downloading" to my iPhone. I think it only streams. How can I set it up to actually download the information so that i can listen even when i don't have WiFi and so that i'm not burning up data allotment?

    RodeoQueen wrote:
Ok, i see that my iTunes Match button is OFF. Does this mean i'm listening to music directly from my iPhone? If i turn the Match button ON, will it play from albums native to my phone or stream from iCloud?
Yes to both questions.  If you have iTunes Match turned off, you can only listen to music actually stored on your phone.  You could also just leave it on, and just go to Settings>Music and turn Show All Music to Off and accomplish the same thing.  With this set to off, it will only display songs stored on your phone.
When you have iTunes Match turned on, and you play a song that is already on your phone, it does not stream from iCloud (since the song is already stored locally on your phone).  If you play a song that is not on your phone, it will stream from iCloud, but still downloads in the background.
I do understand that when I have WiFi on, i'm not using data from my data plan. However, at my office there is no WiFi, so i would be streaming.
If possible, download the music you plan on listening to while you're on wifi at home so you don't have to use your data plan to listen to it at work.
On you podcast question, I only download them to iTunes and sync them to my devices.  I don't have any experience trying to "stream" them.  I think if you did the same, you would experience the interruption in playback when you're away from wifi.

  • ICloud syncs my Reminders to Tasks in Outlook, but they do not show up on the To-Do List

When I make new tasks in the Reminders App on my new iPhone 4S, I notice that iCloud syncs it to Outlook in a new "iCloud Tasks" file separate from the original Outlook Data File. The tasks in the "iCloud Tasks" do not appear on the To-Do bar on the bottom right. Anyone know how to configure this to display correctly?

iCloud-Windows Outlook To-Do Bar Incompatibility Disaster:
Although I don't blame anyone else but myself since I installed iCloud on Windows, my dependence on the To-Do Bar list in Windows Outlook for a quick view of upcoming appointments over several weeks became apparent yesterday when I missed a job interview that I thought was today.
Since iCloud sends reminders a few minutes before events and it is difficult to depend on the small calendar boxes in month view for upcoming appointments, I find I have fallen back to depending on memory alone since installing iCloud. I thought I had a good memory until this disaster.
For those of us required to use Windows Outlook, and grown dependent on the convenient To-Do Bar list on the right hand side for our upcoming appointments, this loss of the list after installing iCloud can result in disastrous consequences
Although I have appreciated the instantaneous sync across all my devices using iCloud, the inability to easily see the appointments well ahead of time makes it useless to me. I'm afraid I will have to reinstall Office to hopefully get rid of iCloud in Outlook. Hopefully the Outlook.pst file will be clean when Outlook without iCloud opens it.
I continued using iCloud with the hope this problem would soon be corrected, but now it's too late.
