ICloud useable as server instead of buying new Mac for that purpose?

If I buy a new iPad Air will I be able to abandon my 4year old Sony laptop, and use the former's full access to iCloud as the server for my 2 older iPads (1 & 3 models)?
Such things as iTunes and iBooks come to mind.
Thanks in advance,
Ian

In theory, you do not need a computer at all in order to use an iPad and yes you can use iCloud exclusively as a backup solution. What you cannot use iCloud for is an external storage area from which you can upload or download selective content. In other words, you cannot upload 3 photos to iCloud nd then download two of them back to the device. You cannot download any one backed file from iCloud either.
iCloud backups everything on your iPad that you purchase from the iStores and all of the data that is associated with those apps. iCloud will not store non iTunes purchased videos, synced photos from your computer, and content of that type.
You can use iCloud with the original iPad and the iPad 3. Those are the two iPads that I happen to own and I can use iCloud with both of them.

(the mac book pro is new, but has all of the retrieved data from my previous mac book pro)

You will lose data from whichever was the 2nd to last to sync .

  • How can i buy new battery for my macBook pro in France

    Hello,
Please, someone can tell me how to find and buy new battery for my 2008 macBook pro in France ?
This one is very old, i already changed this battery one time, i think Apple store of town won't be ok to make the work cause i have made it myself one time before (it has fallen several times, almost broken, means impossible to shut the battery place but still working on). So i bought a battery to a third provider, wich doesn't work of course, try to ask to online assistance but i have to pay 30 € just to ask my question and i doesn't want...
SO WHAT IS THE SOLUTION TO CHANGE MY BATTERY ??? HELP !!!
I bought it in 2008. I don't know exactly the serie. Just know it's a 2,4 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo.
The reference of battery is A1281 10,8V 50 Wh. Can't find it on the store. The only one i found was on a website who didn't tell it's was a fake...
    Lost 85 €

I note Egypt is not listed.
Purchasing a battery from a third party vendor is a high risk proposition.  Many such batteries have been found to be substandard.
I suggest that you try and contact Apple and see if you can have one shipped to you.
    Ciao.

  • Where to buy new drives for Xserve RAID

I have been looking all over to buy NEW drives for my RAID. Can anyone direct me where to go to buy new drives with the slot attachment? 500GB or 750GB
Forgive my lack of specific/correct terminology - I am a newbie when it comes to the RAID.
    Thanks in advance!

I think the fine print says DVD Player support requires 10.3 or higher. But you can still play DVDs in the original drive you have, and are looking to add a drive in the empty bay, right?
Also, Patchburn is available for 10.2 to add native burning support, or you can maybe find an old version of Toast (5 ?) for 10.2 that should allow you to burn to the drive.
    http://patchburn.de/download.html
I agree with the suggestion to upgrade to 10.3 or 10.4, if you can, but you should be able to make this drive work in 10.2 (and still use the original for OS 9 and DVD Player) and decide to do the other upgrades later on if you want.

If you can wait about a 3 months after 10.8 is released this summer and upon new hardware you should be in excellent shape to have not only a fastest latest machine, but a OS X version that all the bugs have been worked out. Plus the three free months of Apple hand holding while they figure out what they did wrong with the new OS version.
If you need a new machine now you'll have to get what you need obviously, but 10.8 should run on it just fine. However know that Apple tweaks things with more currently sellling hardware first, then later gets to the previous released models.
It's been my guestimation that your good for about two year old hardware with very recent OS X release, three years or older hardware you may want to reconsider sticking with the previous OS X version as your hardware is getting dated and likely has only a year left to go anyway (4 year average), so why bother mucking it up, slowing it down and having to buy all new/updated software and third party hardware because they won't make drivers for your new OS version?

  • Do I need to buy new programs for osx lion?

Do I need to buy new programs for osx lion?

First you need to make sure you have a supported machine, and all the current updates (Core 2 Duo, i3/5/7 and 10.6.8.)
If you are using Microsoft Office 2004/8, then you will need to buy Office 2011. If you are using older versions of Adobe Photoshop before CS3 that are PPC only, then you will need to buy a newer Adobe CS.
If you are running iWork 08, it will work, but there will be no support for full screen unless you have 09 version. If you use Apple software like Final Cut or Logic Studio, you will also need the latest versions to use full screen support.
Basically, if you have any software installed that is more than 2 years old, you need to check if it is Intel, PPC or Universal. Because anthing that is listed as PPC will not work at all. And most Apple apps older than 2 years do not have any support for the new Full Screen or Versions features.
If you want to see if you have any PPC apps that are not supported at all, simply click the Apple icon at the top, click about this Mac, then click more info. System Profiler will open, on the left side click on "Applications" and you will see a list of every installed app. The far right column will tell you KIND, Intel, Universal or PPC. Anything in the list that says PPC will not work after installing Lion.

  • No "New Mac for My Mac". Leopard not finding disk, Apple doesn't care...

After several years and several Macs I hit my first major bump with Apple. Today, I felt like I was back in my days of owning a windows machine. (Well, not really.)
I decided to update my G4 Quicksilver (2002). It's a 933Mhz. I installed the max RAM (1.5G). And ordered a new hard drive and OSX Leopard. I didn't want to do an upgrade, but a clean install. And I figured I would install on a larger drive instead of the 50G drive that came with my Mac.
Using Apples site as a reference for upgrading to a SATA drive. I bought a Sonnet controller and a Seagate 500G drive. Both installed quickly and without any trouble, my Tiger disk mounted the new drive. And in Disk utility I partitioned the new drive.
BUT, when I tried to install Leopard, and it rebooted to the setup screen, it never sees the new drive. I found this problem repeated on several forums and I have tried all of the suggestions. They did not work for me.
As a test, I put my Tiger install disk in, and it sees the new drive immediately. But Leopard does not.
I called Apple support. Long story short, when they could not figure out what was going on, (and pretending they have never heard of this problem) their answer to me was, "Since you are not trying to install Leopard on your original hard drive, we can not give you any support".) When I argued that all I had done was install a larger hard drive, like everyone does, and that this Retail Leopard Disk was sold as a "New Mac for your Mac", they didn't care either.
So, it doesn't matter how long you have been a loyal customer. Or how many systems you have registered with Apple. Or how many of your friends and family you switch over to Macs. The bottom line here, is well, their "bottom line". If I really want a "New Mac", I need to buy a "New Mac". That's basically what I was told. Never mind that I do have several Macs. I just wanted update this one.
I am very disappointed in Apple right now. I paid for this G4, I paid for the 3 year support plan, which I never used. I paid for this Leopard software. But because I wanted a larger drive, they tossed me aside.
So, having said all that. If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate it.
Things I have tried that did not work are the "set and wait" solution. I waited over 2 hours and the disk never mounted.
I tried Disk Utility in the setup and it doesn't see the drive. I tried Terminal. It sees the drive but not as a partitioned drive. And it won't mount the drive.
I thought I might install Tiger, then upgrade it to Leopard. I would like a clean install. Not sure what will happen if I choose "erase and install".
Having said all that, I do still think Apple is number one. But they need to fix this issue fast.
    Thanks in advance,
    TroyD.

Ok, here is an update of what I had to do.
I did as requested and contacted Sonnet. I already have the current firmware. But they told me this problem showed no real pattern. Some people had this issue, others did not. What I ended up doing works so far.
I installed a clean version of Leopard on one of my current ATA drives. Though I did encounter the "Blue Screen", once I forced it to reboot, things seem to work and I have not had the blue screen again. I ran all the updates to Leopard and rebooted back into my first ATA drive which runs Tiger.
Then, I used SuperDuper to clone copy the fresh install of Leopard from the ATA drive to the new SATA drive that Leopard could not see before. Then, I set the new SATA drive as the startup disk and rebooted. So far so good. I haven't done much with it yet, but it seems "snappier" and I have high hopes that it will give me what I was looking for. (A slightly faster G4).

There is no really satisfactory substitute for iDVD to burn video files from iMovie.
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or will come with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD 7, i.e. iLife version 9 onwards. You should also do this if you plan to buy a new Mac anytime soon, as stocks of iLife that include iDVD will not be available for ever.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast, which is the best software for burning anything but again does not offer the flexibility of iDVD.

Wow that was really quick, thank you so much.  Im not sure at all which version it was because i said it was around 4 years ago he bought it.  I know it isn't under his username, since he's a PC person (ugh) so i know its probably registered to one of our actual names.  isn't there some way to look it up since we did register it, because I'm not even sure where the disks are from when we bought it (we've moved a lot and also have two storage lockers, i know i would have kept it with other disks) but my cd rom drive is actually broken on my computer as well ( i think it got stepped on and is now squished and won't eject or run disks.)
So is there anyway they can look up that its registered to one of our names since we did register it when we bought and installed it, or do i really have to find the disk with some sort of proof of purchase (i know there would be no receipt after all this time)
either way, ill do what you suggested to the best of my abilities and thank you so much for answering my questions, i can't even open the program as its incompatible and find out the info from that) so I'm in a bit of a pickle and your response was so thorough and it didn't seem to be posted long enough to even write a well researched response, thanks, all the best,
