ICloud verses iTunes sync

If I use iCloud to backup my devices do I still need to use iTunes sync (wireless or wired)?

You can use both but one at a Time. you can back-up to iCloud first then go back to Summary Page and check back-up to iTunes and click Sync again. By doing this you are making 2 copies of your back-up but you loose the "automatic process" by manually switching between back-up methods.
The benefit of using the iCloud back-up is you can restore any iOS device from everywhere where there is a Wi-Fi connection. You don't have to be on the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.

  • Why aren't my iCloud and iTunes syncing?

I think that these two issues are related, which is why I'm just posting this all together.
iCloud issues - I recently purchased more space for my iCloud.  It's backing up on a regular basis, but it doesn't affect/synch with my computer.  If I add a contact on my phone, it doesn't update on my Macbook Pro. Do I need to register my computer in some way or another?
iTunes issues.  My itunes has recently stopped sycing with my phone.  I plug it into the computer or try to do it over wireless and my itunes recognizes that it is sycing, it goes through Steps 1-7 really quickly, and then nothign has changed.  New podcasts or songs on my iTunes do not go onto my phone.
Just want to have everything running smoothly so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Alex

Are you sure you can't run Lion on your computer?  Check the requirements here, maybe you can upgrade, although you could not get all the features:  http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html
For your iTunes problem I think it might be best if you disable wireless sync and do it via cable. I had something similar happen to me once and apparently there was some conflict there because of the Apple ID I was using on iTunes on my phone. I switched off wireless syncing and made sure I logged out of iTunes and it worked itself out.

I've just bought an iPhone 5S in the UK, seems like a big mistake, but luckily by law we can return goods, which is exactly what is going to happen if I cant get this to work. This is my business phone, not having it functional can cost me money.
I have turned off sync to icloud from the phone for both my contacts and calendar, as told on itunes. However, iTunes still says they are synced from iCloud and wont sync to my PC, why and how do I fix it so that it doesnt go to iCloud for anything ?
The phone currently has no contacts or calendar information installed.
PC is HP Probook 4730s running Windows 7, Professional, version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601.

  • HT1349 I ordered iCloud with iTunes on my PC; now I have an iPad mini and want to sync the music

First I added iCloud with iTunes on my PC because I wanted to save the music I had purchases; I had Vista; that PC died and am now on Windows 7; Then I purchased an iPad mini and today I tried to set up both so I could sync the music purchased on iPad mini and PC previously.
However on the PC when I enter iCloud it does not have iTunes available; so I'm stuck and don't know where or how to get the music to sync between the two. It keeps asking for a serial number on the Apple product for the PC but that doesn't apply.
As a newbee I'm grateful for any answers or clues where to go. Thanks, Janet

Unless you backed up your iTunes library from the old computer and then copied it to the new computer, your iTunes library is gone now and you have to start all over again.
I'm not sure what you mean about when you entered iCloud, iTunes isn't available. You will need to explain that a little better. iCloud allows you to download the music again to your computer or to your iPad as long as you use the same Apple ID that you used to purchase the music or any other iTunes content.
Since you have a new computer and no longer have the iTunes library - or so it seems from what you are saying - you need to make the new computer your syncing computer. You might want to take a look at both of these user tips to see how you can do that.

  • Can't sync my contacts through iCloud or iTunes from an iPhone 4S to an iPhone 3G

I have an iphone 4S that fell on the floor and broke the front glass. They will take some time to fix it and I need to sync my contacts to an iPhone 3G. The problem is that I can't sync them through iCloud or iTunes. Everything else syncs just fine (calendar included) but not the contacts.
    Anyone had the same problem?
Anyone has any solution to this problem?
It's reaaly important because I can't be without my contacts all that time (they will take up to 15 days to replace the glass!!!!, the iPhone works fine, just the glass broken!)
    Thanks

Does the display work?  If so, you could use an app like My Contacts Backup to email your contacts to your other phone.

  • Best way to set up sync for iPhone, iCloud and iTunes

Though have used iPhone for a number of years and a big fan, am only now jumping into Apple-land - just bought a mac mini.
Currently, my iPhone and iPad sync with iCloud - all my contacts and mail are available.
I set up my Mac mini with the iClound userid/password - so I get my mail and contacts there too.
    All nice and good.
Now I have this additional option - if I connect my iPhone to the mac mini, I can sync with iTunes. I can sync contacts, photos, etc. etc. What will this do that my iCloud sync already doesn't do? I am worried about turning any of these options on and trying because I might end up with duplicate contacts. [For example, I copied all my photos to the macmini using iPhoto. Now when I check the box for synching photos in iTunes, the required space on my iPhone doubles - suggesting that I might end up with duplicates....]
As you maybe can tell from above - I don't currently sync music, videos, podcasts, etc. I want to start doing that. Question again - what is the difference between syncing with iTunes on this mac mini vs. iCloud syncing?

That was a loong and perhaps too generic a question. Let me ask something very specific.
My iPhone, iPad, and Mac Mini all sync with iCloud and I have my contacts accessible on all three.
Now when I connect my iPhone/iPad to my Mac Mini, iTunes sync becomes another option.
If I now check the box that says "sync contacts", will I end up with duplicate contacts all over the place? I don't want to try it to see if I will or not because it can be a huge pain to get rid of the duplicates.
    Thanks!

  • Getting iCloud to Stop Syncing Apps I Remove Using iTunes

Let me start by stating that I have my iPad 3 set up to sync with iCloud.
I have been connecting my iPad to my Mac and having iTunes sync it, including applications. When I remove apps from the iPad using iTunes, they re-appear after the iPad syncs with iCloud. I don't want to stop iCloud syncing due to my calendars and e-mail syncing, but I don't want it to put apps back on the iPad after I have removed them using iTunes. Can anyone suggest a way to stop syncing the apps with iCloud, or should I stop syncing them with iTunes (which would save me a lot of space on my computer)? If I do stop iTunes, how do I get it to stop downloading the apps that I put on the iPad?

The iCloud synch encompasses data only. It will, in and of itself, add apps to the iOS deveice. Likewise with the back up - it is a one way transmission.
I'm not entirely clear what the full course of events is, but you might check to see if Automatic downloas is turned on for app (and turn it off): Open the Settings app > iTunes & App Stores > Automatic downloads.

  • ICloud iCal duplicates - iTunes sync and local calendars OFF

    Hi there,
all my calendar entries in iCloud (and, subsequently on my iPhone/iPad and Mac) show up at least 3 times, some of them 4 times. This applies to all of my 4 iCloud calendars. I used to have 3 or so local calendars before iCloud, but I somehow converted/merged them to iCloud calendars and now these are the only ones i have. iTunes calendar sync is off, and I have never used MobileMe.
For whatever reason they got duplicated, everything else seems to work fine. If I create a new entry in iCal it only shows up once in iCloud and on my devices. If there is an easy way for me to delete the duplicates in the cloud I think I could get everything in order again.
    Thank you for any help
    Christoph

Yes, your statement is correct and that is exactly what happens. However, if you have a PC running windows, then there is a problem in that icloud will not sync or should I say icloud to your pc.
I set icloud up at the beginning yesterday, it copied 4.4g to the cloud in the sky. Then I went into Outlook and entered a meeting a few days from now. Went back to icloud and told it to do its thing. It ran and when I checked the phone, the meeting was not on the phone. I then entered a different meeting on the iphone and told icloud to do its thing. When it was done, I went to the pc and checked outlook, nothing there from the phone. Then I hooked the cable up and pressed sync on itunes. It went through the sync, backed up etc. I then opened Outlook and still no meeting from the iphone, looked on the iphone and no meeting from the computer.
I turned off icloud and turned sync back on and everything sync'd perfectly with both meetings showing up on the phone and on the comupter.
Thus, icloud is great if you are going to have 3-4 iphones and you use them on different days, it will keep all your apps, etc the same. But for sync, the only way to do it with the PC is with the sync. Unless I am missing something. As I mentioned, if you do turn sync on while icloud is on, then yes, duplicates and a real pain.

  • Hi, my iPhone 4 lost all of my contacts last night. I have never used, nor synced my phone to iCloud, or iTunes. How do I recover my contacts??

Hello, just last night I lost all of my contacts on my iPhone 4. I have never used, nor synced my Iphone to my iCloud, or iTunes. How can I recover my lost contacts??
Also, I am really worried that I might lose more stuff, like pictures. My Mom passed away this Tuesday, the 12th, so I'm nervous that my iPhone might lose photos of her that are on my phone. How do I fix this?!?

You need to hook up your phone to a computer that is running iTunes, and that has been authorized with your AppleID. Here is an iTunes primer if you aren't familiar with that whole thing:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/
Once iTunes is installed on your computer (Windows or Mac), then you would hook up your phone to the computer using the USB cable that came with the phone so you can sync it:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1296
Once you have sync'd your phone, it is a good idea to do so regularly if you are not planning on using iCloud. If you decide to use iCloud (which is free for the first 5 GB of storage), then much of your stuff will be backed up on the Cloud on a regular basis, and the need to sync to iTunes becomes less urgent. Here is the iCloud primer in case you are interested in persuing that:
    http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/
Hope this all works out for you. I'm sure this is a really hard time for you, and to have to go through a whole new learning curve at the same time is going to be difficult. But hope you are able to get through the basics so that you will at least have the peace of mind of knowing that your stuff is backed up and retrievable!
    Take care,

  • My account names for iCloud and iTunes is different, is this why my Iphone4 is not syncing with my iMac?

My account names for iCloud and iTunes is different, is this why my Iphone4 is not syncing with my iMac?

No, perfectly normal to have a separate iTunes account for music/app purchases to the one you use for iCloud syncing of contacts, notes, etc.

Thank you again for all of your help!! I really appreciate it!
I think I am following -- I was able to upload to my iPhoto and all photos and videos are there that is a plus! I tried to create an Event in my iPhoto and put all of my photos in that event but for some reason, now my iTunes it not recognizing that Event in my iPhoto. It is not allowing me to import just that event at the moment but I may be doing something wrong. At least all of my pics and vids are in iPhoto so that is a plus and I know they are at least saved somewhere. Just for some reason, my iTunes it not locating the event that I created with only those photos.
Thank you for letting me know about my contacts! How do I know if I have the contacts app?
Also, I had no clue that my iCloud could be backed up via cellular data! However, is this a new feature with the most updated iOS?? Unforutnatly I am like 2 iOS updates behind because I don't have enough storage on my phone. I still get the notification that my phone needs to be plugged in and connected to wifi in order to back up to the cloud :-(
How can I sync using USB? Right now when i click on the info tab for my iPhone in my iTunes this is the answer that I get -- I am a little unclear as to what it means.
    Sync Contacts:
Your contacts are being synced with you iPhone over the air from iCloud. Over-the-air sync settings can be changed on you iPhone
    Sync Calendars:

  • Using iCloud and iTunes match, should I still wirelessly sync with my computer iTunes?

Using an iPhone 4 with the latest updates. I keep getting an error message syncing over my wireless network that says "Cannot sync phone. There are too many files open" from iTunes on my compter. Should I turn off the wireless syncing now that I'm using iCloud and iTunes Match?
There are 4 iPhones that are using this feature on our network, plus AppleTV 2.

Even though you have iTunes match and iCloud, there are several other types of media that aren't included in either of the services, such as movies, photos etc, if you aren't syncing any of these to your phones, then you may well be able to turn iTunes wifi sync off.
Personally, I would want to find the cause of the error message and use the iTunes sync for backup, I consider it far more reliable and convenient than iCloud for back up

  • Switching Calendar syncing between iCloud and iTunes

I'm looking for advice about what happens when IOS Calendars, previously synced with a Mac via iTunes, are sync'd with iCloud.  The popup warning states that they will be "merged with iCloud"  But what does "merge" mean in this context?
    1) Will they be copied to iCloud leaving a stale duplicate on the device? or will they be moved to the iCloud (i.e. will the "local" versions  cease to exist?).
    And
    2) Will all the existing Calendars be "merged" together into a single iCloud Calendar or will each of the calendars retain their identity on iCloud?
Before taking the plunge into this dark hole I also want to know how to get back out of it. (I spend blocks of time away from the internet and so want to be able to resume syncing to my Mac over USB during those periods.)
    3) Suppose I go ahead and change the iPad's sync settings for all my many Calendars from computer-sync to iCloud-sync, and later revert back to computer-sync.
Will I end up with the same calendars (allbeit with possibly changed content) that I had before embarking on icloud syncing?  Will I get duplicate calendar entries on any of my devices or on the computer?
[Using iPad with ios8, (also iPod with ios6.1.6); Macbook Pro retina with OSX 10.10.1 ]

Thank you Japib - this gives me confidence to go ahead. But there is still one  thing that is puzzling me.
When I go to iTunes to Sync Calendars I see listed there a couple of unfamiliar entries which include an email address (corresponding to my AppleID) followed by @p22-caldav.icloud.com, all enclosed in square brackets at the end of the calendar name.
I have currently turned off iCloud and would like to get rid of these entries. The named calendars are absent from  both iPod and Mac. They appear on my ios device when I sync to Replace information on this iPod touch during the next sync only.  I can then delete them from  the iPod, but they still appear in the iTunes list.
What/where are these calendars?  How can i remove them from the iTunes Sync Calendar list?

  • New iPhone restore from iCloud backup then sync from computer

    Hello
I am getting a new iPhone 6 tomorrow (fingers crossed delivery is ok).
I back-up my current iPhone using iCloud and use iTunes match for music but I am getting a 128GB new iPhone so intend putting all my music on that new iPhone.
What I want to do is use the iCloud restore function to have my new iPhone take on the same settings and app data etc as my current iPhone (which is backed up through iCloud) but then sync all my music from my iMac. It appears that when I plug in a phone to my iMac for the first time iTunes won't let me sync without first either setting the phone up as new or restoring the phone from a iTunes back-up (not an iCloud back-up). Is there anyway to get around this?
I hope that is clear, it sounds convoluted when I read it back.
PS additional question for extra credit. Do I need to update my current iPhone to iOS 8 before running a back-up to allow a restore to work on a new iPhone 6 (which will be running iOS 8)?

If it were me, I would setup your iPhone as a new phone. You will be asked during the setup to enter your Apple ID and password so you can log into iCloud. As long as you have been using iCloud for your Contacts, Notes, Reminders, etc. once your phone is setup iCloud will sync your Contacts, Notes, Reminders, etc. I think you will also be prompted to setup your email account(s).
I think iPad iCloud back ups are different than iPhone and you can't restore an iPad back up to an iPhone and visa versa. I'm not 100% sure since I don't own an iPad.
