"iCloud" versus "iCloud Drive"-difference?

I don’t see why we should “upgrade” (as Apple calls it) to “iCloud Drive”. Already, our MBPs and iOS devices are set up to share appropriately (documents, pix, Safari stuff, Contacts...and on, and on) using “iCloud”. Been doing it for quite awhile. Same free storage limit as is advertised with “iCloud Drive”, which is more than sufficient for us.
N.b., mi esposa syncs Contacts, Mail, Calendar, and Bookmarks through a Gmail account, while I do through iCloud—thus, we may maintain separate sets.
What the heck, if anything, would an “upgrade” to “iCloud Drive” gain us?

It allows documents created in one app to be opened in another compatible app.  There aren't many apps supporting iCloud Drive right now, but that will change.  Read here: http://www.imore.com/icloud-drive-clearing-up-confusion.

  • Whats the difference between the old iCloud and the new iCloud drive?

Can anybody explain the difference between the two?  The new iCloud drive does nothing new, same as the old iCloud.

Did you read the page that Peter provided? See bold text in paragraph below - you open an iCloud enabled app to see the files.
Storing files in iCloud is simple. Just as it should be.
To upload your files to iCloud, simply drag them into the iCloud Drive on your Mac running OS X Yosemite or PC running Windows 7 or later. Or start a new document using an iCloud-enabled app on your iOS device. Then you’ll be able to access those documents from all your devices.

  • Is there a difference between photo stream on iCloud and Photos that should be in iCloud drive.

I'm totally trying to wrap my brain around how iCloud drive should function. Perhaps I'm over complicating things. I see photo stream photos on iCloud - at least I think that's what they are. I'm thinking I should also see photos inside of iCloud drive as well as that is paid for and has more storage and photos don't disappear after 30 days.
Problem is I don't see photos in iCloud drive even though I have paid for it. I'm also really lost on how I would upload from iMac to the drive and then see on my device. What am I missing? I have tried to upload from iMac by dragging and dropping into a folder i created on the drive but they don't appear on my other devices.
Also how about other documents such as PDF files. Maybe I'm to used to drop box. I was thinking I could upload pdf files from my iMac and somehow open them on my devices but can't manage that either.
Additionally using Family Plan and have discovered (i think) that family shared photos are low resolution. Are these even printable?
Could someone please explain this to me like I'm a first grader. Not understanding at all.
    Thanks,
    Kristy

Guy would this be of any help:
To start up your computer in Apple Hardware Test:
Press the power button to turn on your computer.
Press and hold the D key before the gray startup screen appears. If Apple Hardware Test does not start up, see the Additional Information section at the end of this article.
Note: Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion support the use of Apple Hardware Test over the Internet. These computers will start up to an Internet-based version of AHT if the hard drive does not contain AHT.  An Internet-enabled connection via Ethernet or Wi-Fi is required to use this feature.
It takes a minute or so for Apple Hardware Test to start up and inspect your hardware configuration. While this is taking place, an icon appears on the screen:
When the process is complete, select your language and click the right arrow. If you aren't using a mouse, you can use the up and down arrows to select a language and then press the Return key.
The Apple Hardware Test console appears. You can choose which sort of test or tests to perform:
To perform all of the basic tests, click the Test button or press the "T" key or the Return key.
To perform a more thorough diagnostic test, select the "Perform extended testing" checkbox under the Test button before you click the Test button.
Your test results will appear in the window in the bottom-right of the console.
To exit AHT, click Restart or Shut Down at the bottom of the window.

  • Photos added to icloud drive from my imac do not sync to my iphone

Hello and thank you in advance for any help you may be able to give.  The following three paragraphs are a detailed description, as is the last paragraph, which is just a summary. The rest is a rant, because I have become a very frustrated consumer with a company whose products I once revered.  Anyway...
iHave imported photos from my old Powermac to my new iMac and added them to iPhoto and iCloud.  iHave enabled iCloud on my iPhone and iMac and within my iPhone have enabled iCloud storage in the photos app.  iHave enabled wifi syncing between devices and also have bluetooth turned on.
iHave connected my iPhone to the iMac and synced it after each step of adding photos from my iMac hard drive to iPhoto to iCloud drive.
The photos do not show up in my iPhone's photos as they are supposed to according to how iCloud shares authorized data across enabled devices.  The iPhone photo app, which uses the iCloud photo library (and iRealize it's in Beta testing so...maybe that's part of the issue) doesn't have the photos iAdded from my iMac to the iCloud drive via iPhoto.  However, they DO show up in the iCloud as Other Documents (via: Settings>iCloud>Storage>Manage Storage>Documents & Data>Other Documents), but they are only listed and are not accessible.
Basically iHave spent many many many hours and dollars investing in an Apple system which iHave been dreaming about since my original 800mHz "sunflower" iMac became obsolete.  iContinued to believe that Apple had refined and dialed their sharing simplicity as the years progressed. I was so very excited when iPurchased my iMac and upgraded from my Galaxy S5 to the iPhone 6 plus (which poor forecasting on Apple's part made it a six week fiasco to obtain).  I was ready to take advantage of the "across device syncing" simplicity that Apple had promised with iCloud.  iHave given almost 6 weeks to a learning curve that should probably only have taken 6 days, and iAm very disappointed in the clunky, unintuitive, rigidity that this system has shown but which iAm now committed to has The fact is that the transition has been anything but simple and iHave begun to feel very frustrated with what is seeming like a half-beta-baked iDea.  Why is there not a simple drag-and-drop type function for something as simple as as adding photos from my computer to my phone?
Instructions on the apple care site for specific App iCloud storage management seems to have been written and published BEFORE the final iterations of the iOS 8 were released because the slight difference in the instruction process flow and the actual process flow is enough to make the instructions effectively inaccurate.
So, apologies for the rant.  Summary:  iWant to add photos from my iMac, running Yosemite, to my iPhone, running iOS8, via iCloud, but it's not working.  And I have iCloud enabled across all devices (computer and phone)and apps

Looks like this has been solved by yesterdays IOS8 update - thanks!

  • Can't see icloud drive folder in Windows 7

    Hi all,
    I'm running Windows 7 and icloud 4.0.
I'm familiar with apple products, and have followed all requirements to enable icloud drive on my ipad and iphone.
However I am unable to find the icloud drive icon/folder in Windows explorer on my PC.
When I select the checkbox to enable icloud drive within icloud on my PC then press 'apply', nothing happens. If I close icloud and then re-open it, the checkbox has returned to the unchecked state.
I've tried uninstalling then reinstalling icloud, no difference.
By the way, it all seems to run fine on my Windows 8 devices.
I can't find anyone else with a similar issue...any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

Great you have figured it out finally. Just thought you should know that there is a bug in 11gR2 client and because of that Oracle driver version is shown as 11.1.0.7 instead of 11.2.0.2. This can be confusing 6 months or a year later down the road if you wanted to go back and upgrade your client to, let's say' 12g. To fix this, there is a patch available from Oracle metalink, patch id is p11731183 for 32bit and p11731184 for 64bit windows. This bug is mentioned in 1308617.1

  • Can't see Garageband files on iCloud Drive

I've updated my iPhone 5 to iOS 8.0.2 and the latest version of Garageband (2.0.3) for iOS and am having problems accessing Garageband files I've saved to my newly converted iCloud Drive.  Garageband on iOS still sees the files.  As does Settings -> General -> Usage -> iCloud Manage Storage.  But when I go to iCloud.com to access my iCloud Drive there are no Garageband files/folders to be found.  I'm still on OS 10.6.8 so this is the only way I can access my iCloud Drive from my Mac.  Perhaps these are stored as invisible files/folders but it would be nice to have access to them as I can with Pages, Keynote, Numbers, and iMovie.  Anybody else have this issue or have any ideas of how to correct it?  Thanks in advance!

Hi, I've the same issues/questions. Sorry for my poor english but I'll try to explain there what's happen on my devides IPHONE 5s/IPAD air on IOS 8.1
I'm dreaming about the possibility to access to "cloud" songs in ICLOUD DRIVE for example when I start to find a melody on my IPHONE, using Garageband to record my voice and after I want to continue at home with my USB Mic on the IPAD and finish the song.
    I've 2 issues :
I'm unable to export or upload ".band" on ICLOUD DRIVE or even an exported mp3 from GARAGEBAND interface. I can see options like UPLOAD to ICLOUD or ITUNES or GARAGEBAND
I cannot see how to access on both devices to 2 differents ICLOUD DRIVE because my ID on the IPHONE is not the same as the IPAD for many reasons and it will be very confortable to have this capability in my current settings.
The previous solution was to export to ITUNES and use the AUDIO files or export as .BAND and import on MAC OS etc. But I thought that with the new mention (GARAGEBAND compatible) with ICOUD DRIVE it will become easier to do this kind of actions.
Thanks to Apple care & the community !

  • Why have reminders stopped synching on ios8 when iCloud Drive is switched on

i have shared reminder lists on my iPhone that are failing to sync onto my iPad now that both devices have iOS 8 installed. If I disable iCloud Drive then the sync starts working again. Any ideas why?

That is a great comparison of the different views of app specific folders and settings in iCloud.
I agree, it is confusing. Some of the differences are easily explained, but the inconsistency is confusing and irritating.
One reason for differences is probably caused by the transit from the old application centric "iCloud: Documents & Data" to iCloud Drive. Not all applications have yet been updated to the new scheme, for example GarageBand. It still cannot access iCloud Drive, but uses the old "document&Data".  I hope, that will happen soon. But I doubt, that we ever will be able to open GarageBand for Mac projects with GarageBand iOS on mobile devices, at least if want the projects to sound the same on the mobile device. The mobile devices are still too limited to hold the full sound library and to bring the same processing power as the mac.

  • Is there an iCloud Drive app for the iPhone?

Is there an iCloud Drive app for the iPhone?  I have a 5c that's running 8.0.2.
I was able to install iCloud Drive on my pc.  I placed some files out there and would like to view them on my iPhone but I can't seem to find the iCloud Drive app in the app store.
There appears to be an iCloud Drive app according to the pictures here: http://www.apple.com/icloud/icloud-drive/.
Is the app not available yet?

I've had an android phone since they first came out.  Verizon took forever to get the iphone and by the time they did, I was so used to having a phone with a big screen and was already on a 4g device and I didn't want to take a step back to 3g and a smaller screen so I never gave apple a try.  I recently sold my android phone in preparation for the next android phone release and I broke my temporary phone trying to it's replace it's cracked glass (something that's much easier to do on an iphone btw) so I had to find another temp phone.  With the release of the iphone 6/6+ and everyone going so crazy about it, I decided to borrow a friend's old 5c for a month to see what all the hype was about when it comes to iphones while I wait for my android phone to come in.  So far I can honestly say aside from a few things here and there, I haven't really felt like there's much of a difference to warrant the flame wars that I see on android vs apple.  Some things work better on iOS for sure but there are some things I'm used to doing on android that I can't do on iOS. I really like it's overall simplistic feeling.  The people on the far left and far right in terms of apple over android or android over apple and their arguments are pretty comical to me now that I've had some exposure to both.
Anyway in terms of the iCloud drive, from everything I've read it looks like it'll be identical to Google Drive which I've been using for years but without an app, it's definitely confusing on how I get to my documents and photos that I've stored on my iCloud Drive.  With android, before the app I could go to the desktop site for google drive and access my documents.  When I try to go to icloud drive from safari on my phone, it automatically takes me to "set up icloud tutorial" even though it's already set up on my phone.  I'm happy to find that I'm not the only one that's confused by apple's description of the implementation and what's actually implemented.
I still have a few weeks before I get my android, but I'd be lying if said I haven't considered cancelling my preorder of the note 4 and grabbing a 6+ to give an iphone more than a months trial.  I mean in the end, people buy iphone's like candy so it's not like I'd be stuck if I end up ultimately not liking it.
Thanks for your responses, hopefully they implement it's full functionality while I still have time to decide one way or another.

  • HT201104 iCloud Drive FAQ raises more questions than it answers

I am tired of seeing statements from Apple stating that any file or folder can be stored on iCloud Drive and then kept up to date across all devices. As far as I can see this is simply not true. iOS has no file system as such, so you simply can't see files that aren't associated with a particular app. Another question I have seen asked by a number of people and to which I have seen no satisfactory answer is: where is my iCloud Drive folder locally on my Mac and is it backed up by Time Machine?
iCloud Drive is a total mess. Why oh why oh why didn't Apple just go and buy Dropbox. With Dropbox I know exactly where my local folder is and it is backed up with Time Machine. I can store any file I want and see it either through Finder on my Mac or Dropbox app on my iOS devices. If I want to open a particular file on an iOS device, I simply use the 'open in' and it's job done.
One thing that would make a massive difference here is a Dropbox like app for iCloud Drive. It wouldn't fix all the problems but it would go a long way to making it actually usable. Are there plans to do this?

I'm new to this forum but have shared your frustrations. Some of your technical questions may be answered in the latest Lenovo Personal Systems Reference (PSREF) version 403 released on July 20, 2011. The Ideacentre pdf has the B520 information. It can be found at:

  • ICloud Drive Software iCons will not delete

I have installed some software that uses iCloud drive then deleted. The icons for the software is still showing on iCloud drive even though the software has been deleted from all of the devices. When I try to reset documents on iCloud it comes up with an error. I have contacted support and not had very good response. It is becoming very frustrating.

Thanks that solved the issue with the trash.
As for the other issue.  I have an Iomega eGo portable external hard drive that I use both as a place to have my itunes library as well as the source for Time Machine to do backups of the HD.  Recently the hard drive stated that there was not enough room to complete a backup even though I still have over 100GB left available on my portable drive.  Either way I was wondering how I go about deleting older back ups, and which ones would be suggested that I remove or does it really make a difference?
I have a lot of back ups since I bought the drive in January so I know that erasing a bunch of them will free up alot of space that I could use for newer backups and also for storing other things such as music and videos.
I would really appreciate any assistance with how I would go about deleting backups from my external drive & time machine without messing everything up and losing important thngs.
    Thank you!

  • ICloud drive upload stalled

I have iCloud Drive enabled on my iPad and am trying to upload my pix to iCloud Photo Library.
Upload has stalled at 119 items and no amount of restarting my iPad or signing in and out of iCloud makes any difference, I bought extra storage so its not a capacity issue. I had no problem moving my iPhone pix, this is very frustrating. Any thoughts folks?

I am checking iCloud Drive ahead of the launch of Photos for iMac.  On present evidence iCloud storage of my large photo library is not going to work so I will stick with Aperture and an external RAID drive.
On no account move your Aperture library to any network volume - it will not work and is unsupported. The syncing in a Dropbox or on iCloud Drive will break the links in the internal databases.
iCloud Drive is not meant for photo libraries, but iCloud Photo Library is. It is still Beta, but you can test it with the Photos.library on an iPhone or iPad.

  • My iPad 3 is not backing up to either iCloud Drive or to my Computer after upgrading to iOS8.

I have an iPad3 LTE that is unable to backup to iCloud Drive or to my home computer since I installed iOS8. Around the same time I also swapped out my SIM card since my work picked up my data plan (Verizon data carrier). The backup starts and then gets kicked back saying that there is an error
I have tried doing a soft reset by pressing the power and main button down simultaneously - This did not make a difference. I have also tried the Reset All Settings option which also did not fix the problem.
    Any suggestions would be welcome.
    Thanks!

  • How do I manage multiple iCloud accounts for personal iCloud Drive & personal calling?

Yosemite has the ability now to make and receive phone calls as well as to use an iCloud Drive to share documents across devices (similar to DropBox, but as you will see with one major customization flaw).  These are wonderful featurew, however, unless I am following the directions incorrectly my computer with Yosemite has to have the same iCloud account as is used on my iPhone for iMessage (for calling) and for virtually everything else for iCloud Drive (ie there is no way to set-up a separate iCloud account for iCloud Drive).
Now for iMessage I use a private iCloud account, but for the iPhone itself I actually use an iCloud account shared with my family.  Why?  Because when we use a shared iCloud account we can share a number of things here such as:
Location  on Find iPhone.  This works way better than find my friends and also makes it easy for us to lock a device if it's stolen since all of us know how to do this.
Calendar not critical, but allows us to put some family events here
Notes, Very cool as we can share shopping lists which is very helpful when you show up at the grocery and want to know what to get or to Costco etc
Reminders Also very cool as we can create reminders for each other for when we get home or whatever
Files on iCloud Drive Yes there are some files that it would be nice to share and we can do this (ideally there would be multiple accounts for this)
Now I haven't really used iCloud Drive much but you can easily imagine how some documents I might want to share with the family on iCloud while other's I might not.
Now when you switch your Facetime iCloud account to the same as the iPhone that is one private iCloud account shared with an application on another device that uses the same iCloud account.  That is NO PROBLEM.  However, the minute you activate the ability to call phones it requires that you now have the SAME iCloud account in the main computer.  Now BINGO I have a problem as noted above I want to be able to share certain things with other devices.
Does anyone have a solution or workaround?
Otherwise it seems the only thing to suggest is that Apple consider a feature enhancement that allows you to make cell calls from your computer WITHOUT switching the iCloud account to the main account.  For that matter it would be very useful if they could figure out how to partition the iCloud features so that I can decide which iCloud account does what or like DropBox give permissions for certain things and allow the individual users to decide what they want and don't want.
    Thanks.

    Gail,
No you are not being dense, you are just trying to be helpful.  I may not have explained the problem very well.  Setting up a Family iCloud account works great!  However, if that account name is also used for your iMessage, Facetime, and now cellular calls you have an issue with your calls going to the entire family (or worse the thing just not working), your iMessages if multiple phone numbers are trying to use the same icloud account usually get messed up, and their Facetime accounts might end up showing up as you instead of them.  In fact, I think you can't call your family members in this situation and I'm not sure iMessage works very well either.  So what everyone does is create a personal iCloud account for personal features such as iMessage, FaceTime, etc.
Now in theory I could co-opt the Family iCloud account for my calls, but then no one else would be able to use the call feature, because unless I'm mistaken you can't have multiple phone numbers attached to the call Forward and still have them recognize which calls to forward to which phones.    If they don't care for this feature it might work (I'm experimenting now), but I don't think that's what Apple intended.
It is possible to do a switch, which may be what you are suggesting.  This would involve creating a separate profile on the computer that is used for making phone calls.  I would, however, still need to co-opt the iCloud account for just my number and worse I wouldn't be able to make any calls unless I was in that profile.  One of the great advantages of calling from your computer is that you make the call while you are working on something else which is inevitably your work or your personal stuff which is NOT likely to be in the newly created family profile.
Thanks for the suggestion, but I hope this helps you understand either how little I understand of your suggestion or why it doesn't quite meet my needs.

  • How to share the Photos library on iCloud Drive with other family members?

I have uploaded our family photo-library to iCloud drive (136GB+). It works great!
But how can my wife (with her own iCloud-account, but within the family) see and use our library?

Tnx for the reply, though I already feared this was the answer.
Family sharing works well for keeping contact lists separated and we do not need to see all the crap the other half shoots with their iPhone.
But as family-members, we DO want to use our communal photo-library.
It would be great if you could share your entire library with family-members or at least select which albums to share with who.
Also it is silly that you can share a photo only to one other iCloud-album. If I shoot a nice pic of the kids I would want to share it with my wife AND with others.
The same would work for contacts. The family-head should be able to assign which contacts are shared and which are separate.
I hope Apple will update the family-possibilities so that this is fixed.

  • I water damaged my iPhone and want to get my photos back. My iPhone was ios7 but my icloud synced to my work ipad on ios8. Is it now impossible to view any data from ios7 on icloud drive? Any help to get my photos back please!

I damaged my iphone 5s and want to get my photos back. It was submerged in water for a good five minutes (and is now in rice) but I'm pretty sure it's dead.
I really would like to get my photos back. I wasn't plugging in my iphone and backing up, I just assumed it did it automatically because about a week ago I had a message saying automatic backups were stopping as my icloud was full.
My work ipad is running on ios8 (as of a few days ago!) but my iphone was on ios7 as I didnt have enough space to install the update. This means that my icloud is now icloud drive and I cannot view the stuff from my ios7 device without upgrading it to ios8. Trouble is, I cant upgrade it because it's in a rice bowl.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Any idea if I will be able to access my photos on icloud at all? I'm not very hopeful for my phone working again and downloading things that way!
    Thanks!

Photos that are in the cloud stay there until they are removed by a device that has the right privileges. If your iPad is logged in with the same AppleID, then doesn't it show the photos from iCloud?
You will only be on iCloud Drive if you expressly chose to upgrade.
