ICloud vs YouTube: what's best for storing movie clips?

Hello all, I'm looking for pros and cons of using either of them. With my iPhone I am regularly recording movie clips that a few minutes, and need to store them somewhere and share some of them with specific user. I have an iMac running 10.6 as well.
I am considering YouTube as it is directly integrated with iOS camera but i am wondering what are the limitations in terms of data size.  I currently store the 150-350 MB movie clips on my iMac and i've got around 30 of them. But i plan to make more (up to 100?) and to make some space on my Mac.

Thanks for the information about iCloud storage, Julian.
However, the purpose of this thread is more to compare online storage solutions and share experience about their online storage rather than talk about iCloud or YouTube (can an admin change the title?). What vendor do you use? What video format? How big are your files? Satisfied with it?
Bellow is a storage vendor comparison from CNET :
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57428396-263/cloud-based-storage-options-fo r-mac-os-x/
Most of my move clips are actually lower that 150 MB. But somestimes it is higher and when I tested Dropbox, it would not accept a file bigger than 300MB, and 2 GB storage free is quite low.
Therefore, I will most likely choose upload via YouTube as private or unlisted. It looks like the limit is 2GB in size and 15 minutes maximum per file. There is some tuning that is recommended on Mac:

  • External drives... whats the best for video.... ?

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to figure out what the best bang for the buck is in regards to external drives, and what works best for video.
I have considered the LaCie enclosures, I have also considered buying a 500 GB SATA to replace the 200 GB second drive I have inside the G5. The issue than is what enclosure works the best with a MAC and is 1394 and will the firm ware support huge video files, for render or exporting?
Can anyone give some advice based on what they have learned through past experience.
    Thanks

I've been using LaCie FW (800 & 400) drives for about three years now with only one problem - One of the first drives I bought (I think it was a 120 GB) fried itself a few months ago. I currently have 80GB, 120 GB, 400GB and 500 GB drives, all working fine, never have dropped frames. The LaCie drives are pretty tough too, as I've sent most of them back and forth across the country at least a few times with no problems.
However, be careful if you update the firmware for them - make sure the drive is clean as the firmware update can cause corruption of data on the drive (I found that out the hard way!). Also keep in mind that they do put off a fair amount of heat (especially the big ones) so I wouldn't consider stacking them on top of each other horizontally.

Can I see in the iCloud to see what exactly has been stored?
I am not sure as to what exactly has been backed up from my IPad and IPhone. It says my storage is full and cannot back up so I'm wondering can I go into the cloud and delete what I don't need?

Unfortunately, you can only see the sizes of your existing backups and which apps taking how much storage capacity, but you cannot see it on file basis.
To see what is currently using your iCloud storage go to...
iOS (iPhone, iPad): Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage
Mac: System Preferences > iCloud > Manage...

Paragon even has non-destriuctive conversion utility if you do want to change drive.
Hard to imagine using 3TB that isn't NTFS. Mac uses GPT for default partition type as well as HFS+

I have a movie it is a triangle.I duplicate it and I want to hitTest on the first triangle movie clip and I added 3 different line movie clips on the 3 side of triangle.I tried to write a code something like that.
    if(firstTriangle_mc.hitTestObject(line1_mc,line2_mc,line_3mc){
    trace("Ok");
but I've got error.I think it is not allowed hitTestObject for multiple Movie Clips. So is there anyone have an opinion about it?What should I do?

Here is another test for multiple movie clips for hitTestPoint but only the first work the others don't
    uc_mc.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,hitle);
    function hitle(e:Event) {

You can assign a value to the name property of the MovieClip,
but refering to the variable name of your MovieClip instance is
preferable. This code illustrates the difference:

  • What's best for allowing document download?

    Hi All,
Quick question really. I'm looking to create a simple HTML page which is to provide documents and photos to be downloaded. Essentially there will be several pdfs and high res images for people to download and I was wondering what the best way to do this is without creating a very long page.
Ideally, I'd like them to be able to read the PDF and then to download it and for the images to be in some sort of gallery and that if they click on the image they want they can download it. I've got all my images stored on a website called dropbox.
I'm very new to Dreamweaver CS3 and am trying to get through the dummies guide and free online tutorials but can't lay my finger on the answer really.
    All suggestions greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

PDFs are downloaded anyway when your end user's click on a direct link.  For added convenience, you could combine images and PDFs into a folder and Zip it.  I use 7-Zip  http://www.7-zip.org/
Another approach is to use a ForceDownload script in your favorite server-side programming language.

  • Adobe reader does not work, what is best for viewing pdfs?

While using Safari, I keep encountering a message that in order to view a .pdf, I need to download Adobe Reader, accept the end user agreement, then relaunch.  I have tried to do this many times and keep getting the above message. What program is best for viewing pdfs using Safari on an iMac

    Back up all data.
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, there should be a setting in its preferences such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected. Otherwise do as follows.
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • What settings best for screen reading & min/no header/footer?

I prepare documents for reading online on web sites.  How can I create pages that scroll smoothly and contain maximum text and other features on the page with minimum wasted white space.  These documents are never intended to print anywhere - in fact want to discourage any such attempt.  What settings are best for this in Adobe?

This really has nothing to do with Acrobat, but is a general question about reading information on a screen. There is no easy answer since people have monitors of different sizes and keep the monitors at different resolutions. I have no problem with discussing this here, but you might get a better response in the Design or Web Design forums. As a first step in the discussion, you might try to figure our what size monitor you want to target.

  • What's best for my battery.

I use my macbook alot, like 8 hours a day. So I was wondering what would be the best for my battery.
Should I always connect it to the adapter. Or should I use it on the batterypower and charge it when its underneath 20%.
    Thanks in advance.

The consensus here seems to be: (1) that it's quite ok to leave it plugged in; (2)  It is good to use the battery occasionally, per
    Apple - Batteries - Notebooks
    (3) It is not good to run your battery all the way down, or even close to that.
Following these guidelines I have a battery which is 15 months old, with 108 cycles and currently reads between 98-100% health.

  • New external drive choices -- what's best for Aperture?

Hi.  Hardware, I'm sorry to say, generally makes my head hurt.
Today Apple's delayed Thunderbolt-to-FW800 adapter made it appearance in Apple Stores.
Purchasers of the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display (rMBP) now have a nearly full set of options for using external drives with Aperture.  I had been using a stable of FW800 drives (with my MBP 5,5).  I'm looking for recommendations on what to upgrade to.
(Aside: I've been too busy to post a comment recommending the rMPB.  It's my main Aperture machine (I use Aperture every day, but work in two different locations) -- I'm _very_ happy with it.  Highly recommended.  My machine is 16 GB RAM and 500 GB SSD.  But there's still this ports problem ... .)
    The options I know of:
    - use the new adapter and use the old FW drives.  These can be daisy-chained, as before.  Afaik, the total throughput is limited by what TBolt allows (which may be more than enough).
    - move drives to USB3 enclosures.  I did this as a stop-gap measure while waiting for the adapters.  I got my enclosures from OWC.  The drives are not daisy-chainable.  The rMBA has two USB3 ports.
    - buy eSATA hubs and use the eSATA ports on the drives.  This one just became available.  Expensive, imho.  Not sure how the Mac will handle it (I always have Originals referenced to external drives; I sometimes have Libraries on external drives).
    - move drives to TBolt enclosures.  These are slowly coming on the market.  They are very expensive (imho).
    - replace the drives with TBolt drives.  Also very expensive.
    - replace the drives with USB3 drives
I'm looking for a reasonable middle-term (3-5 years) solution.  Fwiw, I'm not convinced that external drive throughput is even an issue with running Aperture.  It seem to run well on my rMBA even when a large library is connected via USB2.  (I assume Aperture is good at taking advantage of the 16 MB RAM and the SSD "scratch drive".)  I need to have one USB2 port, and one TBolt port, available at all times (various peripherals; the TBolt is for external monitors).
    Thanks!

Good stuff.  Thanks.  Agree in principle re: "TBolt for displays; USB3 for storage".
I did get a USB 3 hub.  (Amazon link.  There is a 7-port hub as well.)  Highly recommended (at least for rMBP users).  This works well with how I use Aperture: I have several external drives with mostly Referenced Originals and some Libraries.  Since I rarely use more than one of these at a time, it doesn't matter that the hub throughput is limited to a single USB 3 channel.  The USB 3 hub, for me, functions as a quasi-data-server for Aperture, and takes up only one of the two USB 3 ports on the rMBP.  (Fwiw, with the rMBA I don't think there's much reason for storing Referenced Originals on a fast drive; because of the efficiency of the way Aperture caches, USB 2 may be fast enough.  I haven't measured this yet.)
I mentioned eSATA only because almost all my external drives came with eSATA ports and cables.  I have never used eSATA.  At this point, I don't plan to.
I have moved a few drives into USB 3 enclosures (purchased from OWC).  With the USB 3 hub, and the newly-available Apple TBolt-FW800 adapter (which supports daisy-chained FW devices), I am no longer in any practical way limited by the four ports on the rMBP (2x TBolt, 2x USB 3).  Whew.
I backup my system drive wirelessly to a Time Capsule every night (by design, the machine doesn't have access to the TC during the day when I'm working), and use SuperDuper to backup all Libraries and Referenced Originals to specific sparse bundles kept on leap-frogging external drives, with one always off-site.  At this point I make no practical distinction between FW800 and USB 3 drives for back-up, as they are all fast enough and the back-ups run unattended.  (But USB 3 seems to be much faster.)

  • What is best for my macbook pro... turn off, sleep,or leave it on?

i know that u can leave it on for a couple of days nd it will b fine, but i would just like to know if its best to turn it off during the night.i dont mind that i have to wait for it to turn on,i just wanna do the best for my macbook pro.

Some of LeafsMac's points make sense.
Letting the battery completely die is not good.  Always plugged in, even asleep, it can die if power is off long enough.  But good planning can get around that.
Also, it does need to run on battery once a month at least, down to 40%.  Then recharge back on A/C plug.
Interesting note about MBPs ...  Even on charger the battery will lose slowly battery charge from 100% to 95%, then recharge to 100% all by itself.  That is to exercise the battery a little bit and save "recharge circuit" usage.  Nothng to worry about.

  • What is better for home movie editing, ipad or mac book?

i have a panasonic hdc-sd90 camcorder and my current laptop is woefully underpowered to run any of the hd editing software so i have been thinking of an upgrade and this seems to be a good reason to do so.  I also am self employed and require software that i can do basic invoicing on a spreadsheet.  I like the idea of portablilty so the ipad is appealing but i don't know if it is powerful enough to enable me to edit my home movies adequately, plus the exporting issues that seem to come with the ipad (although i have heard there are apps you can get that help with this and printing documents as well from the ipad would be an advantage)  If the new ipad is not able to edit the home movies then what mac book would be best for my needs?
i am relatively new to apples products and growing gradually more frustrated with windows based pc's as time goes on, hence the temptation to switch to apple.

  • Whats the best way to move files from a hard drive that wont boot?

I made a bootable USB disk and it appears to work fine. I can still read and open files on the old disk (admin account only) from the new USB drive the old one doesn't boot. I don't have a backup but would like to move files to the USB and then reformat the old drive.
Whats the best way to capture the data?
There are four user accounts on the old drive. Only one on the new drive so far. Do I need to set up four accounts on the new drive in order to copy data from each?

Time Machine is for making backups and restoring ones it previously created. It doesn't restore data backed up or copied in other ways. In your case, it's better to use a cloning utility or manually drag the files than it is to use Time Machine.
