ICloud won't sync Address Book

I'm running iCloud on a MBP, iPhone and iPad, all using the last OS.
If I create a new event in iCal on my MBP, it quickly shows up on the iPhone and iPad.  But if I create a new Contact (or change an existing one) in Address Book on my MBP, it does not show up on either iOS device or on iCloud.com.
If I change a Contact in my Address Book on iCloud.com, it shows up on the iPhone and iPad, but not on my MBP.
So iCloud is not communicating Contacts between my MBP and iCloud.  It is communicating Contacts between iCloud and iOS devices, and it is communicating iCal events over all of them.
I've gone into System Prefs:iCloud and tried to uncheck Contacts.  The System Prefs pane freezes.  I can't click my way out of it, I have to Force Quit it.  When I re-open it, Contatcs is checked.  Un-checking it didn't "stick".
I've gone into System Prefs:iCloud and tried to sign out of iCloud.  I get the same freezing problem.  Only a Force Quit gets me out.
If I uncheck other things like Calendar, that works just fine.  Again, the only problem is wiuth Contacts.
When I open Address Book, and see individual Contacts on the right-hand page, and Groups on the left, all the Groups are listed under "iCloud", and there is a spinning gear to the right of "iCloud".
While Address Book is open, and the gear is spinning opposite "iCloud", the Activity Monitor shows Address Book as eating up 100% of CPU, and several GBs of Real Mem.  So it seems that Address Book is trying to do something - the spinning gear opposite "iCloud" never stops - but it's just not communicating with iCloud.
Any idea what's going on and what I can do about it?
Thanks in advance ...

Thanks Jeffchoa - I was so hopeful this would solve it for me because I have the EXACT same situation that Roger Barre so meticulously described above.  My MBP, iPhone and iPad are not communicating in iCloud but only for address book - calendar and notes are fine.  My gear wheel also turns all the time next to the iCloud category and I checked the activity monitor and the same thing - 104% of CPU used up and 4.5 GB of real memory - crazy high numbers.  I however was able to turn off contacts and back on again - it just took 10 minutes the first time.  I did this on all 3 devices and deleted my accounts and everything.  Was on the phone w/a genius for over an hour and he couldn't figure it out.
BUT we never disabled through address book preferences.  We only disabled through macbook system preferences.  When I tried jeffchoa's suggestion, I thought it worked b/c one of the missing test contacts appeared.  But others didn't and then the gear wheel started it's thing again.  So I tried it again and then this time it froze on me and I finally had to force quit.  Now I have contacts in two groups - duplicates and the annoying gear is still spinning and some of the test contacts that were only on my devices showed up in All on My Mac?!
I also have another problem which is what I noticed first.  Addresses on my MBP are not showing up on my iPhone or iPad.  They are old addresses that were imported when I switched to iCloud 2 months ago so they were never touched.  The other contact details are showing but the home addresses are just MIA.  It's happening in 1 out of 5 of my contacts I think (I have 2000 so not sure how bad it really is).  I am running iOS7 on both devices and OS X 10.8.5
Anyone else out there with some ideas?  I so hoped this was my ticket!
Thanks!

I have an iPhone 3g and it won't sync address book contacts. My iPad does it via the cloud but now my iPhone won't do it. Please help.

Have you tried a "hard reset"? If so, I would take the phone to an Apple store. If not,
    1. Make sure the phone is OFF
    2. Hold the HOME button and then press the power button and HOLD IT.
    3. Hold both buttons until the phone comes ON, goes OFF and come ON again (about 45 seconds)
    4. Re-sync with iTunes.
    Hope this helps.

  • Two computers won't sync address books anymore

I have these two computers with related software:
    One G4 1 GHz dual processor, OS 10.3.9, iSync 1.5 (v139), Address Book 3.1.2 (v321)
    One G4 1.5 GHx Powerbook, OS 10.3.5, iSync 1.5 (v139), Address Book 3.1.2 (v321)
In the past I've always been able to sync the address book contacts between the two through my .Mac account and iSync. Today it won't work--although oddly enough the Safari bookmarks DO sync up. But not the address book stuff. Anybody know what might have happened that would change this?

  • Maverick won't permit syncing Address Book or Calendar by USB to iPhone or iPad and permits only syncing by iCloud, which I don't want to use.  Any ideas on how to sync without using iCloud?

Maverick won't permit syncing Address Book or Calendar by USB cable from my MacBook Air to my iPhone and iPad and permits  syncing only by iCloud.  Mountain Lion permitted this via the Info tab on iTunes.  I don't want to use iCloud.  Any ideas with Maverick on how to sync Address Book and Calendar from computer to iPhone and iPad without using iCloud?

ymcneil - thanks for the work around. But isn't it amazing Apple forces us to do this to maintain our privacy.
I live in Australia where there are good privacy laws protecting  citizens. I do not want to be forced to use iCloud when the data sits in  the USA with weaker privacy laws and also able to be seen by the US  Government under the Patriot Act. Further I suspect Apple will  interrogate my contacts and calendar for commercial purposes and I do  not want that either.
I  chose to synch my calendar and contacts with my iphone and ipad. I have  relied for years on carrying around my phone with my diary on it. I can  no longer do that.
Whoever  made this decision at Apple has to be someone who knows little about  the world. I can actually see EU regulators getting very annoyed by  this.
I too woud like the itunes mac to iphone/ipad local backup given back.
In the meantime - thanks for the work around

  • How to sync Address book with iphone on 10.5, while iphone synced with iCloud?

My mac runs leopard 10.5.8. Meanwhile iPhone is updated to 5.1. and synced with iCloud. As we know, OS X 10.5 can not be synced with iCloud. How to sync Address book with iphone? My Address Book on my mac has almost all contacts that can be found on my iPhone. Even with pictures from FB and extra info such as twitter accounts, etc.
The question is - how can I manage my contacts? Now I have added several new entries to my iPhone, but they won't appear on mac's address book. In iTunes the contacts sync box is unchecked due to the fact that iPhone syncs with iCloud. But then I'm wondering where did Address Book get all the contact updates that were made on iPhone?
I'd like to control this whole thing. And is there such thing as one data base, that could used by all devices and would change entries on all of them, if I change or add something on my iPhone?
Or I just have to get Lion and let the iCloud do the magic?
    Thanks,
    Lauris

I just synced my new iPhone (iOS 5.0.1) with the Address Book on my Mac which runs 10.5.8 and iTunes 10.5.2. I launched iTunes and then I connected the iPhone to the Mac. It appeared on the DEVICES list in the left column in iTunes. I selected it and then the Summary screen appeared in the right part of the iTunes window.
In the Backup section of the Summary you can choose whether to 'Back up to iCloud' or 'Back up to this computer'. Even if you have 'Back up to iCloud' selected, there is a 'Sync' button in the bottom right hand corner of the iTUnes window where you can manually initiate a sync with the Mac.
    Hope this helps,
    Dave

  • How do i import and sync my icloud / iphone contacts into address book on my macbook pro, how do i import and sync my icloud / iphone contacts into address book on my macbook pro

    HELP
how do i import and sync my icloud / iphone contacts into address book on my macbook pro, how do i import and sync my icloud / iphone contacts into address book on my macbook pro
Runnig 10.6.8 on a MacBook PRO.....

The easiest fix if you're running Snow Leopard is to export all your contacts, then import them into something like google (I already had a gmail account), and then just use google to sync your contacts instead of icloud (via the sync with Google button in the address book settings).
Its a bit sluggish to update, but it works well.  You can then point your iphone, and other iOS devices to use google for contacts too.
If Apple don't want to look after their customers, other companies will gladly do so....

My iPod touch 2nd generation does not sync my contacts. I only have iCloud contacts in my address book. How can i sync that?

I do not fully understand you question.  To use iCloud on an iOS device requires iOS 5 and the 2G only goes to iOS 4.1.2 and thysyu can't access iCloud, including contacts.
Maybe you could sync the iCloud contacts with anopther program and sync that program with the 2G iPod.
The following smple states the following for Contacts:
iCloud: What if my device or computer doesn't meet iCloud system requirements?
    Contacts
If you want to check your iCloud Contacts, you can do so by visiting icloud.com from a Mac or PC (as long as it meets the browser system requirements for icloud.com).

Assuming you have these accounts set up in Mail, open preferences and under Accounts tab, edit the SMTP outgoing server list. Do you have a .mac address in the list? If so, delete it.
    Are you using iCloud?
For the troubled account, select the correct SMTP server for that account in the box and check the box to use only that server with that account.

  • Syncing Address Book to IPod Classic

Problem: Syncing Address Book to my iPod Classic 80 (using iMac, bought new Dec. 2007)
I have tried again and again to sync my Address Book to the iPod; with always the same weird results.
    1. When I sync my iPod to the Address Book, only seven contacts of 166 appear on the iPod - THIS is the problem.
    2. On the iTunes Contacts page I have checked; ‘Sync Address Book’ and ‘All Contacts’.
    3. During syncing the window states that it is syncing contacts.
    4. In the list of ‘Selected Groups’ (I always have ‘All Contacts’ checked) groups appear that I have deleted in Address Book.
    5. I used Bento in the past, and didn’t like it; I have moved Bento from the application folder to the Trash. Could Bento be interfering somehow?
    6. On Preferences I have tried vCard 3.1 and 2.0, neither worked - 3.1 is currently selected.
    7. In Address Book, I did an archive backup. And then restored with the archive, no difference, with the sync. The restore worked fine in Address Book.
    8. As a test, in Address Book I deleted one of the seven contacts, that do appear on the iPod (see 1. above); then synced; it still appears on my iPod - the contact that won’t die.
    9. Syncing of Calendars works fine.
    10. I have tried resetting the iPod. Still no difference after syncing, still only seven contacts appear, including the deleted one.
    11. Where is the data for the Address Book stored on the computer? If I deleted all the data files in Address Book, would that help? Would the files rebuild themselves with the restore archive?
    12. The iPod software is up to date.
    13. Resetting the iPod did not change anything.
    14. I did the sync manually - syncing only Contacts, still only seven contacts.
What can I do? Any ideas would be appreciated. Using the iPod for contacts would very useful - I really do not want to buy another device or a cell phone (PDA) that also stores addresses.
    Thanks, Diane

OK - Now we have some progress. I did as suggested and 'Reset Sync History', The seven contacts on the iPod are gone! However, it still is not syncing up my contacts. I reset the iPod, tried manually, restarted the computer, etc. - it didn't help. Thank you for the suggestion.
    Thank You, Diane

  • MacBook Pro 17" iTunes can't sync address book with iPad Air

Can't sync between MacBook Pro 10.6 OS ver and new iPad Air (bought 2 days ago) cell 32gig.  Have been to Apple shop at Garden City WA, helpful but seems very little knowledge of 10.6 OS.  Have attempted upgrade on MacBook to Lion OS, persevered and seemed to work.  Except now the MacBook won't boot, even choosing drive unit, just spins the icon.  Even left it for a few hours just in case it needed time to sort itself out.
Back to Apple shop first thing in the morning, getting MacBook up and running is first priority followed by syncing address book with iPad.  If can't sync guess I'll have to return it as having them communicate is why I brought the iPad, something lighter in my brief case instead of carrying the MacBook around.
It became tiring being told the MacBook was old technology, having spent money with Apple upgrading the MacBook drive & memory to cope with Final Cut and Creative suite.
    Any advice most welcome!

Figured it out and it wasn't fun. I watched the console messages as I deleted groups and tried to sync with Mobile Me until no error msg was displayed. Then I restored AB from a back up and proceeded to delete contacts one at a time and check for errors until none were displayed. After deleting about half my contacts under the one group I finally found the one contact. I then did another AB restore, deleted the troubled contact, sync'd fine, then did another backup. I have no idea why that one contact was the problem as everything looked fine. Console msgs only showed a silly number as the contact, not the name, which is why I had to go through all this. But...it's fixed.

  • How to sync Address book with iphone(iOS 6) and 10.7.4?

How to sync Address book with iphone(iOS 6) and 10.7.4

i'm having this issue too.  it's a bit more complex though i think so i'll give the details:
a few days ago i added some people to my contacts using my phone. the thing they have in common is they're all new contacts.
they synced over to my macbook address book ok.
then a few days later i had to do a full restore of my iphone for various reasons (the new one, already!) which i did. when i then looked in my iphone contacts, these contacts were no longer there. they WERE however, still in my macbook address book.
so i figured i'd switch icloud syncing off for contacts and then resync to get them back on my phone. it didn't work. so i then turned off icloud sync and tried a good old manual sync via itunes, making sure to check the box for syncing contacts.  it still didn't work.
now i'm at that odd place where the contacts are in my macbook address book but not in my phone and i can't seem to get them onto my phone (which is frustrating as ultimately they are phone numbers and in my phone is the best place for them!)
    any ideas?

  • Cannot select 'Selected groups' to sync address book contacts to ipad

    Hi,
After i upgraded to iOS5, I cannot select 'selected groups' to sync address books to ipad. I am syncing via icloud, but there is no option so sync selected groups contacts, nor via itunes for manual sync.
    Can anyone help, please.

Exported addresses from Address Book to desktop and then deleted all addresses from Address Book.
    Deleted file AddressBook-v22.ab** from Library>Application Support>AddressBook.
Exited Address Book and iTunes, restarted Address Book and imported addresses from desktop.
Restarted iTunes and all of the groups were visible in the "Synch Address Book Contacts" window.

  • Syncing address book on Mac to iphone?

my phone has deleted all contacts and I don't see them on my itunes BUT i Do see them on my mac address book? How to sync?  Much thanks!!

You won't see your contacts in iTunes.  iTunes manages the sync from the Address Book.  Simply select your phone in iTunes, go to the info tab at the top and check sync Address Book.

  • Icloud won't sync with my iMac 2013

    Hi everybody
Maybe someone can help me out with the following issue. I bought me an Imac 27'' one month ago to replace my macbook pro which had become to small concerning the screen. I used the migration assistant to copy all of my data to my new Imac and everything went smooth except for my contacts. Icloud won't sync any addresses into the contact application and neither can I use a backup file to get my contacts into the application. Everything else works just fine with Icloud. I already tried to deactivate Icloud and reactivate it, but none did work. I thought that the update to 10.8.3 might help...but no it didn't. So here I am hoping that maybe someone out there might help me with this I'm sure tiny issue.
Greetings from Luxembourg and thanks in advance for your help.
