Icon bounce then ZIP, ZILCH, NADA...

Hi folks,
Longtime reader, firsttime poster...
Anyway, my computer started giving me all these "Application Quit Unexpectedly" warnings this afternoon.
So, I shut-down...then restarted.
That's when it all went kinda crazy....
I uploaded the latest updates on and then...
the iTunes icon bounces twice and then nothing...
the same goes for iChat, iMovie, and Quicktime.
Oh...and when I happened to stubble accross my screensaver I get
this error message...
Screen saver “Flurry” did not load properly. Please select another screen saver. Error: Can’t load bundle
So, someone on the iTunes boards suggested verifying the Disk Permissions with the disk Utility...nada.
Then I tried the ReInstall disk...nothing
Help please...
Thank you
p.s...I found this post
Troy Dilley, "problems with itunes 5 download-causing other problems" #1, 02:04am Oct 2, 2005 CDT
about trouble downloading the update...I tried the reinstall of the earlier version of Quicktime and still nothing.

Christopher hello,
I have folowed you.... well I still don't know what model Mac you have or version of Operating System but you can tell me that when you come back...do this 1st and let me know the results...
Check that your HD is in order with 'Disk Utility' ...
Run repair HD from original CD or DVD install disk...
insert disk and re-start holding down the 'c' key until you see the spinning gear.
At installer level do not continue...
Use top menu and go 'Disk Utility' select your HD volume with the Operating system on...
select 1st aid... select repair Hard Disk.
if errors are repaired run again until none are reported then verify your HD.
quit and return to the Finder Do not continue with the Installer...
Check the permissions are set correct on the Apple installed software...
Use 'Disk Utility' from Applications > Utilities > select HD... select 1st aid. repair permissions... if repairs are needed run again until none are repaired... do not worry about messages 'we are using special permissions etc... they are OK Quit when finished.
check this if any of the Digidesign Core Audio driver has been installed as part of a Pro Tools version 6.9 installation. ..

Yes, as long as you let TM do a full disc backup (that is, you do not exclude anything in the TM backup settings) you will have a backup that allows a full system restore - puts everything back just as it was.
You can also clone your system using the shareware app SuperDuper or the donation-ware app CarbonCopyCloner
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
    http://www.bombich.com/
Both of these apps will make a true clone (literally, a bit-by-bit copy) of your hard drive onto an external drive.  This clone will actually be bootable itself (you plug in the drive and hold the option key during startup then select the clone to boot from).  You would boot from the clone, then reverse-clone it back onto your internal hard drive.
If you are really serious about being highly confident of not loosing files, you could use both  - I keep a TM backup on one drive, and 2 clones on separate bus-powered hard drives.
P.S. even if you had not had any issues, you really, REALLY should be keeping regular, up to date backups anyway - things go flooey without warning sometimes and you risk loosing everything on your machine if you DON'T keep regular backup copies available.

  • Safari slow to open. Icon bounces then stops

Well, I'm having a problem similar to the one described earlier. The problem started after I installed OS 10.3.9. The icon in the dock bounces.. and bounces ... and bounces. Then it stops bouncing. About two minutes after I first started Safari, it finally loads my home page.
    I have tried
    1) Reinstalling Safari (version 1.1.1): problem still present.
    2) Exited nearly all other apps prior to starting Safari, leaving only Dave and Norton Antivirus, both of which have not caused problems for over a year--problem still present.
    3) Resolved font conflicts and rebooted computer--problem still present
    4) Had Font Book running before starting Safari--problem still present.
Admittedly, two minutes to wait for Safari to start is not a lifetime, but it is irritating.

    Hello Ranjan,
One thing you mentioned that would cause, me at least, some concern is Norton. Norton's products are renowned for creating havoc on a Mac. Have a search around in these forums and see for your self.
Another thing not mentioned is any maintenance. Have a try with something like
    Onyx
    Hope that helps some.

    Ian

  • Safari just won't open! Icon bounces then stops.

I've just finished re-installing OSX 10.3.9 and Safari 1.3.1 and after using Safari for a couple of days, all of a sudden it won't open. After clicking on the icon in the dock, it bounces about 6 or 8 times and then just sits down again and stops. No Safari. Is there some easy way to fix this? It's happenned before but after doing a complete re-install of my OS I thought that the problem would be behind me.
Has anyone else experienced this frustrating problem? Thanks.
    Steve

I had this - it also affected mail and a couple other built in Mac apps - my fix was to check clashing system fonts - it turned out to be two versions of arial in font book for me. I may be a case of trial and error. Also, oddly, when I opened Font Book before trying the Mac Apps, they all worked. Can't explain why.

  • Safari will not open.  The Icon bounces then nothing

I downloaded Safari when it first came out. Kept up with updates but one day it stopped coming up when I clicked on the Icon. Tried reinstalling. Tried downgrading to a lower version. Deleted a bunch of stuff from my HD. Nothing works. Internet Explorer is working find. Anybody have any thoughts???

Could be the com.apple.Safari.plisy file in ~/Library/Preferences/. Try removing that first. If no change, move ~/Library/Safari/ to your desktop. If no change, try creating/logging into a test user account.

  • Icon bounces, then disappears from dock "Portable driveMy Passport for Mac"

Hi all, I've been having some recent problems with my portable hard drive "http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=717" When i Click the application It try's to launch and as soon as it shows in the dock, bouncing, it disappears as fast, and app won't launch.
Now my portable hard drive "My Passport for Mac" use to work as i use to back up my mac once a week with this , but recently i got a new hard drive fitted to my macbook pro as it was getting a bit sluggish so the apple tech guy transferred all my files from my old hard drive to my new one he fitted . Other programs work so im confused !!!!
I dont get why the application for my "My Passport for Mac portable hard drive" wont load up now , i have made sure everything to do with the "My Passport for Mac" was uninstalled from my new hard drive and i went on the western digital website and downloaded the new firmware and software for it but after installing the new software and firmware i still have the same problem when loading the application "it shows in the dock, bouncing, it disappears as fast, and app won't launch.
PLEASE HELP SOMEONE I NEED TO BACK UP MY MAC BOOK PRO !!!!
    Thankyou everyone for reading .
    Regards Rob

Hi Rob, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I am not familiar with WD software, so I cannot help you with that (maybe WD has tech support?), but why not use Time Machine or cloning software such as SuperDuper! or CarbonCopyCloner? Actually, I recommend either partitioning the external HD into at least two partitions, or using at least two external HDs, and running TM on one, and doing a regular clone to the other.

  • Program won't load, icon 'bounces' up and down and then...stops!

Any help please? I click on my Sims 2 icon to load up the game and all of a sudden it's stopped working. The icon bounces up and down in the sidebar and then stops. I have plenty of space to run the game and it's only just started happening.

Perhaps the game has become corrupted. Try reinstalling the game from the original install source and then apply any available online updates.

  • Mail icon Bounces but doesn't open

when I try to open my mail the mail icon bounces once in the dock and then nothing happens. I have auto update so i'm running the latest software. I can retrieve my mail from a website but I can't see my contacts or anything. No other application seems to be affected.
    Help please!

    HI Sonia,
    Have you tried repairing permissions?
That is always the first thing I do when something doesn't behave as expected.
Choose HD> applications>Utilities>disk utility. Open it and click on your hard drive icon, then choose repair permissions from the bottom of the panel. I don't usually bother to verify first but someone might disagree with me
    Let it run.
I usually go off and have a coffee break or something.
I also take a shot of the finished permissions so that if I have to give anyone information for troubleshooting I have a report of it.
a selective screen shot can be taken by using shift+command[apple key}+4 [all at the same time]
this puts a "pneg picture" on your desktop. I change the name to todays date, keep the pneg extension and file them in a suitably named folder for a month, just to be sure.
Sorry if you knew how to do it. but someone who doesn't might read the post and find it useful.
    Hope this helps
If not post back and maybe someone will have another answer.
Warmest wishes and welcome to "discussions" a great community .

  • Can't stop the dock icon bouncing when there is an "alert" from Thunderbird

I posted this question on the MozillaZine forum, but no-one there answered so I thought I'd try here.
I'm using Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 for my email. Is there a way to stop the dock icon bouncing when there is an "alert"? These happen relatively frequently in connection with my Yahoo account, and every time the icon bounces until I go to Thunderbird and click "ok" on the alert box. This is slowly driving me nuts. I have disabled the "animate dock icon" setting for new mail, and for my whole system when programs start or open, but it hasn't had any effect on the behaviour of the icon with regards to alerts.
    Thanks.
    C

Sorry, I am not trying to be difficult. I'm just lost.
Hey, no problem, really... we're here trying to help & just need to find out what is needed to help!
You really should right click on the whole Thubderbird folder and Archive it first, so we can go back if need be.
Then, it appears that if you just recreate the account, with the name, email, server, and smtp, then everything comes back for that account... at least for global accounts.
If you wish to hold off on this then just move the original .js back and start T-Bird again, then I can search for a way to edit the existing .js file, because for some reason, when you change your prefs back, it's not changing that file like it should.

  • Icon bouncing in dock

I use the on screen po-up alarms quite a bit and notice that when one comes on screen the iCal icon bounces in the dock. About half the time, when I click on the alarm to get rid of it the icon in the dock keeps bouncing, apparently it will keep this up forever, or until I click on it to make iCal active. It is very annoying trying to work with this icon continually bouncing, so I eventually make iCal active and then immediately close it, which solves the problem. Am I doing something wrong to cause this behaviour or is this just an iCal bug? I can't find any preference remotely related to the behaviour.

  • Mail won't open either from the dock or from the applications folder. Icon bounces but program won't open

Mail worked fine this morning, then, when I went to open the program this afternoon, the icon bounced in the dock but would not boot either when I tried to open it from the dock or from the applications folder.

The nib file is the visual part of the user interface, so it has either got damaged or gone missing, which (unless you have been moving things around) is a little bit worrying.
    I would suggest
make sure that you have a current backup
run disk utility to check your disk
    if your disk is ok,
put in your installation disk and do an optional installation of Mail
download and run the latest combo upgrade

  • Dock icon bounce w/ critical not continuous?

In the docs it says, "If the priority is
NotificationType.Critical then the icon bounces until the
application is brought to the foreground. " however when I give
bounce() that critical priority it still only bounces once.
Any ideas? Error in the documentation?

    I just tried:
    DockIcon(NativeApplication.nativeApplication.icon).bounce(
    NotificationType.CRITICAL );
and it worked as described in the docs.
