Icon Composer Problem

When I try to make grey/black icons, Icon Composer think theres nothing there and puts nothing in the box when I drag the image in.
Any way to fix this/ any other program like Icon Composer?

RonenA,
which format are you writing your icons to? I could not get the described effect with a tiff and neither with a PSD image, which were "full-colored" but only gray and black used within the image.

  • Mac attempting to open folders with the Icon Composer application

When opening a folder from anything other than a finder window(like the "Open In Finder" button in a stack or by clicking the preview icon in the Get Info box) my Mac attempts to open the folder with the Icon Composer application. Of corse this produces an error saying the Icon Composer cannot open files of this type. It is like the "Open With" setting got messed up somehow though there is no "open with" option for a folder that I can find. It does not matter whether the Icon Composer is running or not though this issue did not start until after I ran the application for the first time.
I have tried renaming the finder's .plist file and the finder's settings seem reset but the problem persists. If it were a problem with the Dock it would not persist within other apps(including the Get Info window right?
    Any advice?

never see this one. try resetting launch services. delete the file /users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.launchservices.plist and try this again.

  • I've made a new icon for a folder, using icon composer. But when I add it to the folder in the icon spot, it changes instead to the generic picture icon with "icns" on it. How do I make sure the picture actually changes to what I want?

So I took a picture of a generic mac osx snow leopard folder (png), layered a picture of a movie reel onto it (png) using the application Gimp, then saved this complete picture as a png. I then took this picture and dragged it into Icon Composer & from there saved the new icon as an icns file. Next, I selected this new icns file, copied it, went into the "Get Info" part for the folder I want, clicked on the little icon in the top left corner, and selected Paste in the Edit menu. The icon did change, but it changed to the generic Preview icon with the letters "icns" across the bottom. Why isn't it changing to the actual picture I made? And how can I fix this or make sure I do get the result I want?
FYI: I have done this EXACT SAME process with other icons I've created, and in the past it has worked fine and changed the icon to the picture that I made. But today it's done this twice, with two different pictures/icons and in different folders.

Did you open the image in Preview? Then make sure you are actually selecting and copying the open image? You can check by going to Finder->Edit->Show Clipboard to see if the image is actually on the Clipboard. Now do GetInfo on the folder you want to have the image, select the wee little icon at the top (make sure it really is selected, the faint blue halo is hard to see) and then Paste. You MUST have permissions to write to the folder! Otherwise nothing will happen. Does the "Sharing and Permissions" section of the GetInfo window, down at the bottom, show your shortname as owner, with Read & Write permission?

  • Icon composer, can make them, can't use them from get info, how?

Hi, I can make icons in Icon Composer, but when I try to retrieve and use them from the "get info" window there is only a generic ICNS icon available at the top, although the icon I made shows in the preview pane at the bottom. How can I retrieve the icons I make so I can replace a folder icon for example? Downloaded icons work OK from the get info window. Thanks for any help.

The "Tiger" version of the 'sips' utility can handle ".icns" format files and creates full size custom icons so you could probably use that. Note that it acts directly on the file so it might be a good idea to work on a copy, rather than the original. To use 'sips' to create a custom icon for an image file (including ".icns" files), open "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app" and enter:<pre>/usr/bin/sips -i /path/to/file</pre>If you are unfamiliar with unix style paths, just enter the '/usr/bin/sips -i ', including the space at the end, then drag the image file into the terminal window (the correct path should be filled in automatically), then hit <Return>. It should be possible to copy the new custom icon from "Get Info" as usual.

  • Where can I get Icon Composer for Lion?

I want to make an icon with a transparent background. Icon Composer is supposed to be part of Apple Developer Tools which, I believe, was included in the installation discs of pre-Lion OSs, but with Lion not having an installation disc, I can't find it.

If Apple is listening, we got this today:
High-Resolution App Icon and Newsstand Cover Art for Retina Display
Starting in July, newly submitted iOS apps require high-resolution icons and cover art. Large icons and Newsstand cover art must have a minimum resolution of 1024 x 1024 pixels. ...
Apple, any plans to update Icon Composer to handle 1024X1024 soon so we can meet this deadline more easily?

  • Icon Composer - Doesn't work

This is one of the developers tools. It seems like it should be simple but all pic format and sizes I try to drag into it get rejected.
Can't find much info on the web. What I find seems to be for older versions of the program.
    Any ideas?

    1. You can paste any image you want onto folders but that doesn't make it 'an icon', just as changing the name of a text file does not change its contents.
    2. Icon Composer lets you create icon resources, which you then can add to a program and compile that. That way you set +default icons+ for the application and its related files. Select any file or folder with one of your pasted icons, select "Show Info", click on the icon and press "Delete". You'll see your trick doesn't stick.
But: it seems your ultimate goal was only to customize folders. If so, yes: open any image in preview, select an appropriate part, copy, paste into the Show Info icon field -- that's all there is to it.
By the way, the transparency mask in IC is automatically created from the alpha mask in the original image. Since jpegs do not have masks, there is no mask added. If you drag a PNG onto it which has a transparency mask, you'll see this appear in IC.

  • Icon Composer Hanging up?

Does anyone experience Icon Composer hanging up? I try dragging a transparent PNG onto it and whenever it tries to compute the 16x16 it always beachballs then the system completely freezes. Also it hangs every few minutes.

I have trying dragging in every combination of files (.png / .tiff, 8-bit / 16-bit, alpha / no-alpha) I can think of from the finder and directly from a photoshop window and a preview sidebar. I only got previously made app icons to drag in once from preview I think it was. None of my pics work :/
Hangs. I can drag more in and it keeks overlaying the import dialogue on top of the last one.
Is there a correct method to ensure a result?

  • Icon Composer: mask is all black

    Hi all,
How do I get an icon mask that is roughly the shape of the icon instead of a solid black square? I've created an icon image (png) in AppleWorks 6, which I dragged onto the 512 square of the Images view in Icon Composer. The Mask view then changes to an all black square. I've tried selecting a blank field in the icon image, then deleting that area (-x) and I've tried pasting a B&W png representation of the icon - something that looks like I expect the mask to be - Still just a black square.

Make sure your PNG has an alpha layer. I don't know if Appleworks supports that. I suggest a more modern tool.

  • Where can I find standalone copy of "Icon Composer"

I am trying to prepare some custom icons for my third party hard drives and need the help of the simple and FREE Apple developer utility known as "Icon composer" (available free as part of a suite of some 40 so-called developer tools that come with APPLE OS install DVDs.
I am looking to download (from WHERE ????) a simple, standalone copy of this little utility without all the hundreds of MEGS of extra baggage of the developer or XCode tools multi-installer on my OS 10.5 install DVD.
I lack the sophistication to find the right installer and am concerned I could inadvertently damage my OS by installing a whole lot of program tools I don't want or understand.
Please, where can I find and download just and only - "ICON COMPOSER" ??? I've searched all over this site and can't find it.

THANK YOU V.K. - Have downloaded Pacifist and will see if it can peer into all those many packages on my optional installs on the DVD. DO YOU KNOW WHICH ( TITLE ?? ) OF THE MANY INSTALLER PACKAGES CONTAINS THE LITTLE ICON COMPOSER APP ????

  • Cannot directly open the browser from the icon. "problem loading webpage" and "timed out" are the messages. Access was accomplished by using yahoo messenger and opening my email. if I attempt to open a new page, I recieve the aforementioned warnings.

no link to open access to the internet. I used Yahoo Messenger, clicked on the 'mail icon' and since Firefox is my default it opened and I was able to continue from there. If I try to click File, open New Page, I get the "problem loading webpage" and "connection timed out" messages

changed my homepage to Yahoo. Now Firrefox works but still cannot access ANYTHING 'Google"!

I really don't know how to solve it. I've tried adding the extra needed options in xorg.conf to make it work but it still does not.
Here it is if it would be of any help to solve this problem.

  • Icon Preview Problem in Finder

    Hi,
I've had my new MacBook for about a month now, and as my photo collection has grown I'm starting to notice that while using CoverFlow (which I have as the default view for most of my folders), there are always some icons that appear as a generic JPEG icon instead of having the image preview. This problem goes away (all icons have previews) once I open the same folder again or refresh it somehow (for example by selecting Calculate All Sizes in View Options). However, once I restart/log in again, it happens again. Most of the images are normal JPG's from the web, and which ones have missing previews is completely random. This applies to all of my folders, and I've seen the same thing on several other Macs as well (the family iMac and several others in Apple Stores). This only appears in CoverFlow view, though.
Here are a couple of screenshots to illustrate the problem:
    http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l4/Octavarius/Screenshot-IconsinFinder.jpg
    http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l4/Octavarius/Screenshot-IconsinFinder2.jpg
Does anyone else also experience this issue? Is it a common issue? The Show Icon Preview option is checked, by the way.
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Jacob

Keep in mind that it's the icons below the Cover Flow section that are the problem. The blurry photos in the Cover Flow section on the first screenshot have very small resolution, that's why they're blurry, but if you look in the second pic, you'll see some others that are completely sharp. Just in case you misunderstood.
I do sometimes get blurry pictures in the Cover Flow section, just after they're downloaded, but once I log out and back in, they're fine and stay that way.
Once I click Get Info on an icon that's missing the preview it's immediately refreshed and the preview is there again, as it should be. It seems like Finder is sometimes skipping certain previews the first time you open a folder since log in.
What did you mean by custom icon? How do you set/delete one?

  • Icon theme problem

Hello. I have installed icewm, rox, gnome-icon-theme, and tango-icon-theme. I use rox filer to manage the icon the themes and desktop. The problem is that some icon themes display correctly (eg gtsand) and others don't (eg tamiga). In the case of tamiga, the tango icon theme is being used instead of the tamiga theme. Here's what I've tried:
    1. installed tamiga  icon theme to /usr/share/icons and ~/.icons (not at the same time)
    2. checked to see that rox is using theme (~/.config/rox.soruceforge.net/ROX-Filer/options)
    3. tried adding icon path to ~/.gtkrc-2.0 (I don't think rox uses this)
    4. tried editing the "inherits" line in the index.theme file (Inherits=Tango, gnome, hicolor). when I switched the positions of tango and gnome, the gnome icon theme was used. added Gnome and GNOME.
    5. browsed the forums
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
    john

I know how to change themes using the method you described; however, the icon theme that is displayed is tango. I clearly chose tamiga, and the rox file in ~/.config points to the tamiga icon theme. So my question is why isn't the tamiga theme being used? Does it have something to with the inherits line in the icon cofig file? Is there some other problem? Some icon themes display correctly, but not others.
    Thanks for trying!

  • Need Some Help? Icon view Problems

Just recently my finder has been acting up. While in finder and viewing in Icon layout, Leopard has been taking a while to load icon folders & images. It's only about 5 sec, but much slower than before. The problem only occur in Icon veiw. All other views load folders and images quickly (List, Coverflow, ect.) Has anybody encountered this problem and knows how to solve it?

    Welcome to Discussions.
Have you installed something recently that could be the cause?
It's been reported that setting the Mouse double-click speed to maximum in System Preferences - Keyboard & Mouse helps (as odd as it sounds): http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=5284495#post5284495

  • Weird icon display problem (9iAS Forms 9.0.4)

Let me start out with the fact that I have setup 6 or 7 systems displaying GIF's as icons in web forms (both Forms 6i and Forms 10g/9.0.4). So I know all about setting the registry.dat, virtual directory for the icons etc. I have setup the environment correctly (unless some fat finger typing has gotten in the way).
When I load a form in a web browser and I watch the status bar on the bottom of the broweser ( IE6 or IE7) I can see that it loads the GIF's (fortunately my server is just slow enought that I see the "loading .....xyz.gif" statements for my GIF icons.
What happens is that none of the icons display on the buttons. Of course when I run the form in the IDE the icons display as expected.
Has anyone run into this problem before and if what was the solution?
    TIA,

    1. The image files cannot be found or are not accessible. Just because you see something on the client that says "Loading..." does not necessarily mean it was found. Check the HTTP Server error_log. If you see HTTP 404 errors you have an access or virtual path problem.
Answer: No HTTP 404 Errors (no errors at all). FYI, Files are located in D:\icons (W2K server) and the Security is set to "Everyone" with Full Access/Control. The AS has "D:\icons" mapped to /icons and Registry.dat has the path set to /icons.
    2. You are using an image format that isn't supported. For example, Forms supports GIF files, but not GIF files with transparent backgrounds. Also, Forms does not support most of the compression formats associated with GIF and JPG. Test with an image that you know will work. For example the OTN Logo on this page. Right click on the image and choose Save Picture As.... or:
    http://www.oracle.com/admin/images/otn/otn_logo_small.gif
Actually, you should be able to simply put the entire URL above into the image filename field on the Property Palette for any Iconic button large enough to hold it.
I pretty sure this works in 10.1.2, not so sure about 904
Answer: You'll probably say this is not good enough, but the images work in the IDE, therefore I conclude that they should work on the AS (i.e. size and display type are correct/supported). I did not have a button that was big enough for the Oracle logo, hence I did not try it.
    3. The image size is too large for the button.
    Answer: see answer above.
    4. References to images are case sensitive. It is recommended that your image files (in the file system) use all lower case letters, including the extension. The reference in the form should also be lower case.
Answer: all image names in the property pallet are lower case and the actual file names are lower case (as shown in Windows Explorer).
With regard to the other post about icon names ending a list of specific characters, some do and some don't, but ALL my icons are NOT displaying.
Lastly, these exact same icons have worked in the past (who does not reuse icons?).
