Icon Placement in Gnome

I'd like to put a menu icon on the extreme left of a bottom panel.  If I do this, minimized windows vanish.  However, some icons added to the panel will go there automatically.  Unfortunately, the menu icon does not.  Is there some trick to this?
Thanks,
Burt

Nothing is locked.  No icons or panel.  Is there something else?

  • Dark blue background and weird icon placement on jump list (recent files) of apps in task bar

Hi, I recently made a factory reset of W8.1, and now I'm seeing a weird and very annoying dark blue backgound in the list of recent files that appears when you right click an app pinned to the taskbar. Also, the "pin to taskbar" and "close window" icons show sort of out of place and apparently larger than normal    I've tried looking through every possible setting but I can't find anything related to this list in particular. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advanced.

Hello @Adrianrff, I understand that a dark blue background and strange icon placement on the jump list of apps in the task bar of your computer, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter! Since this issue occurred after performing a factory reset, I suggest performing a full system recovery by following the steps in this resource on Backing Up Your Files (Windows 8), as well as Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 8). This should return the jump list and icon sizes back to factory settings.

Regards Thanks for the suggestion, MechPilot. I did a full system recovery but unfortunately it did not work. Apparently the color of the background matches the color chosen in Windows first startup, but I don't remember having chosen white the first time, everything looked fine then. Any other suggestion?

  • Can i have a check box in the hierarchical tree in the icons place, urgent!!! please

    Hi,
I'am working on the Hierarchical Tree structure which should have three levels, I need to have a check box in the place of the icon & if i select a node that node & the child nodes should get selected.
After this when i say move selected ( i'am trying to use picklist class also) the entire checked tree has to move to the display area to the right & should display as tree structure & after this if i save then the checked records which are moved to another text area should get saved!!
How to achieve this? I have the tree structure ready but the check box part is the worrying factor! & then moving the checked records to the right using picklist class is the second problem & finally saving records to database.
Any help in this regard will be deeply appreciated:)
If check box is not possible then i will have to look at other methods, will the tree structure allow checkboxes????
    Thanks
    Mahesh

No the tree will not allow checkboxes

  • Changing battery applet icon increments in gnome shell

I am currently using gnome shell, and I am able to customize most of it to how I like it. However, the battery icon has increments of about 25%, which is very misleading in terms of seeing how much battery you have left. I currently have a gnome-shell extension to add the percentage next to the icon, which helps, but I would like to change the increment to 1%. I understand that if I had to do it, I would have to have 101 png files for the battery icon. My question is: has somebody already done this? If so could you tell me where. If not, could someone explain to me how to change how often the icon updates (I'm pretty sure I know where the icons go, but I don't know where to tell the OS to use and update them)
    Thanks

Just to follow up on this, if I force my gnome-session to use fallback mode it seems to work.  I'm guessing this is likely due glx issues with Xorg and TigerVNC.  Eventually I plan on building the svn version in the AUR because it has the required patches.

  • Menu icon placement

I hope a simple question for many:
How is the placement of program icons in the menu bar determined? Is it possible to change the line up?
    Thanks.

you can command+drag around the items in the right side of the menu bar.

  • View windows exe icons on nautilus (GNOME)

I am new to Arch so I might not do things the Arch way yet.  I have been a Debian user since the nineties. My share definitions are in /var/lib/samba/usershares.  I have not used smb.conf to create shares for years. But my goal of simple samba shared folders for my home network might not be your usage.
By duplicate icons - do you mean on the desktop? If so which one? I use Gnome 3.10 and I do not have Nautilus controlling the desktop, my desktop is blank. Are you loading external shares via fstab? The shared folders from your own computer should be just like any other folder to be mounted on another device in your network - and thus not show as mounted drives to your machine.
My thinking is that you have an icon defined for a share, and a second one because your desktop defaults to showing mounted drives. Or is this something else again? Nautilus will show mounted external folders in the left window pane automatically.
Well I use smb.conf. By duplicate icons I mean in Nautilus, when you click 'Browse Network' - the machine with the samba shares is shown twice (see this picture)

    Hello,
how can I change the icon (not the dimension, but only the icon picture) under application of gnome shell? After the installation of amule-adnza-svn, the application icon is the default one.
I try to search on google and on the forum, but I didn't find anything to solve this.

  • How to Use a Grid to Capture Icon Placement?

    Hi,
I'm working on an application that uses a 4 quadrant image as a layer.  There are numerous icons that need to be dragged by the user onto one of the 4 quadrants.  I need to save which icons were placed in each quadrant of the image.  Can I overlay a grid control that has each quadrant identified as a variable?  How would I go about saving to a new variable the icon name that was dragged and the quadrant name/number onto which it was placed?
    Thanks,
    Sid

ap_TonyTony: Though the attached file went a huge way toward helping, there's just one little caveat I haven't been able to iron out. To simplify things to the main problem, I brought in a clip with the things I'd like tracked into your project file and analyzed the marker point, just as I had been with my own project. One major difference, though, is you're somehow able to use the rectangle object itself, with the Match Move data attached, as the target of the Track Points behavior and I'm limited to using the rectangle object's Match Move data alone. That doesn't seem like a big deal, but if I'd like to, say, point at several things and have the arrow gracefully rotate between them and not abruptly move from Track Points behavior to Track Points behavior as they do the way I'm doing it, I can't do that. In your project file, I was able to easily keyframe the position change of the rectangle and the arrow followed it while continuing to motion track; it didn't interfere.
So I guess the question to answer is this: Why, in your project file, can the rectangle be put in the Track Points' "Source" well and have its Match Move data be used, and I have to put the rectangle's Match Move data in the well because the Track Point behavior doesn't pick up on the Match Move if I don't? I can attempt to word that more simply, if necessary.

  • Problem with icon place

    hello,
    is it only me?
i spend 20 minutes rearranging the icons according to my taste, under iTunes
and after sync, i see on the iPod that the icons were randomly placed...
and then i unchecked some apps and then sync'd...
but all the 148 apps were still there on the iPod...
so i guess it's serveral bugs....
i have the latest iTunes and the news 3rd 32g iTouch

Already i suggested you buddy if you really want to work with GridbagLayout, you have to do practice on this because what ever you are asking for that is not big task if you will do it.
first of all going through all basics and try to understand all GridBagConstraints.
I hope you will be able to do your own. All the best.

  • Lock icon placement on desktop

is there a way, or some piece of software that will allow me to lock items, folders and hard drives on the desktop in a certain place? basically I have about 8 external harddrives that I plug into my mac pro and every time i boot up they all appear in a cluttered unorganized fashion along the right of the monitor, i would prefer them to be on the left, and in a specific order. it is very frustrating to have to place them how i like it every time, is there anyway to do this automatically? or even with automator?

What are your Finder view options?
At the Finder menu bar, go to View and select Show View Options.
Do you have "Keep arranged by" selected?
I have By Name selected which keeps everything arranged on the right but I don't have 8 external drives connected.

  • Keep customized icon after changing gnome icon themes

Is that possible under current gnome2.6? Thanks in advance.

Oh, thanks, but I think you mean to customize icon themes. I am sorry I don't explain very clearly, I mean when I choose a picture as my folder's looking, say, a post for my movie stored folder- I do like the feature - but if I changed my icon theme in the theme section, the customized looking of my folder is gone, so can I keep it not changed? I can change my desktop icon and keep it no matter how I changed my icon theme, but in nautilus I can't do so. Is there any way to do so? Thanks.

  • App icon placement

I've contacted apple with a request that they include a way to select the home page location for app icons within iTunes. I like to keep my apps sorted. For example - utilities on one home page, sports on another, etc. It's annoying when I download a new app, and then have to move icons around. Maybe if Apple gets enough responses, they'll add this to a future iTunes update. Fill in the easy form at www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

the newest software version (2.1) does keep them sorted. the only issue is NEW ones will go to either the first open spot or the last page (if all pages are full, which i guess again is the first open spot).
that is a good idea tho, one which i would like myself.

  • Changing desktop icon placement

I cant seem to figure out how to use the arrange icons function and not have them align on the right side of my desktop.
I move them to the left and use this funtion, and it puts them back to the right.
It seems counter-intuitive to have things align on the right when we read from the left.
    Any help?
    Thanks
    Nat

Hello Nat & Welcome to Discussions.
From your desktop choose View>Show Options or Command+J Then uncheck Snap to grid and uncheck Keep arranged by: This will allow you to put your icons wherever you want and they'll stay there.

  • Gnome desktop icon description wrapping [Solved]

How is it possible to make the icon descriptions in gnome desktop not wrap so early? For instance, the name "Evolution" is wrapped just before "n":
    Evolutio
    n
And "Thunderbird" is wrapped as follows:
    Thunde
    rbird
    Solution
It was a matter of opening "Places" --> desktop --> menu Edit --> Preferences and choosing a larger zoom for the Icon View Defaults (I had it set in 50% but obviously 75% is better, now only the "d" of "Thunderbird" is wrapped, but 100% is too big for my screen).

hmm, i'm not sure what could have happened
maybe you can get them back if you re-install gnome-menus, archlinux-menus ,, i don't think kde comes with any as a pkg.
you might also be missing /usr/share/applications, most of the entries also come from desktop files in that directory
