Icon problem in system preferences

I recently opened my system preferences and found that the speech icon (between the software update and startup disc icons) had been replaced by some other icon that looks like a lightswitch. I was wondering if there's anyway to get the icon I had back.
Thanks,
Dan

Ferd ll,
I had the same phenomenon: an outsized lightswitch suddenly replacing the 'sharing' icon in system prefs.
I saw a post recommending trashing just the last of the three files you suggest, and it worked (com.apple.preferencepanes.cache).
But, being a nervous newbie I became afraid I might be messing something up by deleting a file of whose function I'm ignorant, and so I moved it back to Caches from the Trash, only to have a dialogue tell me a newer version of the same file exists there, and do I want to replace it with the old (the one I'm moving back.)
I'm confused. Did the OS create a new, uncorrupted version of the file when I trashed it?
And, is it really safe to delete the original (my nerves whisper it must be there for a purpose.)
Thanks for your insight...

  • How do I get rid of Norton Icons in my system preferences?

I'm having problems getting rid of Norton on my new MacBook Pro. I foolishly transferred applications from my old G4 with Migration assistant and it transferred my old Norton Internet Security which dates from 2003-2004. I deleted everything I could find, but my computer is still running slow and I get messages when I boot up that the various Norton programs can't open and I should reintall them. The Symantec uninstaller tool can't find any Norton applications on my computer and when I search the hard drive for Norton or Symantec I find nothing. Still, there are two icons on my System Preferences panel, and I'm wondering if I manage to remove these, it will get rid of the last wisps of Norton. Any ideas?

Since it is a new machine, if I were you, I would do a full "Erase and Install" and start over.
BTW, you should really be in a 10.5 or MacBook Pro forum.
    Good Luck.

  • Problem with system preferences

Hi, the company's manager get an error when he tries to open Desktop & Screen Saver option at System Preferences. When he clicks the first time  it never opens but if he clicks again it shows a message of error and the system preferences window disappear, but it works in any other icon at the system preferences. This happened after a restoration from time machine because the hard disk failed and they installed a new one.
    Thanks for your help
    PERCY

If it only the screensaver system preferences that are causing the problem try removing the following file in you home directory:
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.XXXXX.plist
where the X's are a sequence of hyphenated letters and digits.
Other possible related plists that you may remove could be:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist

  • I am running OS X 10.5.8 and don't see an iCloud icon in my system preferences.  I do see a Mobileme icon but I would like to have all my mac devices on iCloud.  How can I get iCloud on my desktop?

I am running OS X 10.5.8 and don't see an iCloud icon in my system preferences.  I do see a Mobileme icon but I would like to have all my mac devices on iCloud.  How can I get iCloud on my desktop?

iCloud requires 10.7.2 or later. See the following about how to upgrade:
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

my mac os is 10.6.8 and when I try to upgrade, says I have most up to date software.
You do. 10.6.8 is the latest update to 10.6.
10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion are paid upgrades. Buy 10.8 in the Mac App Store if your Mac is compatible by searching for "Mountain Lion." If not, call Apple to order 10.7 Lion after making sure your Mac meets the requirements.

  • Problems saving system preference settings

    Hi All
I have just bought a new intel Mac and upgraded it to Mac OS 10.7 Lion. Everything works great except for one small anoying problem. When I go to system preferences and set my sound output option to my external speakers all is ok untill I restart the machine. Now the setting is not saved and I have to redo it manually each time. All my other settings save ok.  I have tried reparing permissions and reparing the start up volume with password utility as mentioned online. I have also deleted and redone my system prefrences plist file in the system folder. Does anyone out there know what is going on and how to fix it.
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards
    Paul

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

  • HT204053 i dont have the icloud icon in my system preference on my mac. what do i do?

i am trying to find my pics and photo stream on my icloud on my mac and there is no icon for pictures, i have all of iphones and ipads backed up to the cloud but there isn't a picture icon showing they have been uploaded. I go into system preferences on my mac and there is NO icloud icon. what do i do???

Your signature says you have 10.4.6 (Tiger) - is this correct? (If it isn't please keep your signature up to date to prevent confusion). The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.5 (Mavericks preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is now non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mavericks, provided it meets the requirements - if you are indeed running Tiger it's possible that you may not be able to.
If you are rusing an Intel Mac you will have to upgrade to Snow Leopard first to be able to access the Mac App Store - it's available in the online Apple Store. However if you have a PPC Mac you cannot run Snow Leopard and cannot proceed further.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price (though it's reported to have been removed from sale in some countries so may well cease to be available generally) but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Mavericks (10.9.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only.
The requirements for Mountain Lion and Mavericks are:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
      and the supported models are:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table , and that no system later than Tiger will run the Classic Environment.

  • Icon missing from System Preference on MacBook Pro. Please Help

The icon for my mail, contacts and calendars is no longer under my System Preferences. Can someone help me get it back? Thanks.

If you're running the OS version in your profile, you never had that icon. Assuming the profile is wrong, do as follows.
    Select
    View ▹ Customize...
from the System Preferences menu bar. If the missing icon appears, check the box next to it, or click Show All. Then click Done.
