Icon trick

Was looking to change some icons in the normal way and came across this;
Select any picture or png or whatever as long as it can be opened in preview > lasso to select it and maybe crop it > go to EDIT and copy > Select file, folder, or whatever needs icon changing > get info click on its icon icon>> then paste < preview picture should appear as new icon.
Probably not new to the big guns but this newbie thought it was cool. <br>
G5 2GHz 1.5gb ram.152GB +Lacie 300 firewire   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   logic pro 7.1.1 828mk2

And you can copy anything on the screen by using Command Shift 3 (whole screen) or 4 (for crosshair) and a file will appear on the desktop to open in Preview.
Of course you can also add Control to the above commands and it will copy directly to the clipboard which you can paste elsewhere.
(To paste the graphic on a icon in Tiger >Get info and click on the small icon at the top and paste)

  • Saving CS5.5 files using CS6

    Hey there,
I've just installed CS6 and I'm running into the same problem I did when I upgraded to 5.5 at the time. I'm running into 3 problems.
    1. The files I created using CS5.5, aren't automatically recognized as CS6 files. For instance, an InDesign 5.5 file has a white 'note' icon. When I force the file to be opened with InDesign 6 by default, the icon changes to a white note with a tiny InDesign icon in it, instead of a full CS6 icon:
    2. But that's not the most annoying thing. When I open up a CS5.5 file in CS6, it doesn't remember it's location. So when I save it, it treats the file as a new file and I have to browse back into my filing structure to find the original file location and overwrite that. It marks it as [converted] in the file name when I open it. Maybe that has something to do with it?
I just noticed it does the same thing with my Photoshop files.
    3. I also noticed that, although I uninstalled 5.5 after installing 6, that the old 5.5 folders are still in the Adobe folder. Does that have something to do with it, maybe?
Do you have a solution or this perhaps?
    Thanks!
    Janet

Thanks for the quick answer! Ok, if that's what it is, a bit annoying, I'll live with it . I'd just like my icons to appear as they should. I reinstalled CS5.5 but that didn't do it, so I'm uninstalling bot versions now - what do you suggest? Installing CS5.5 first and then CS6 - leaving CS5.5 running on my computer? In that case, do I have to set the files to 'open with CS6' as default program by right-clicking a file and choose open with CS6? Or is there another way to have files opening with CS6 by default (thus not messing up the icons)?
Or will just installing CS6 do the icon trick when everything is uninstalled?
    Thanks!

  • Trick to get free icons!

    Hi people!
Just a tip or trick to find easily and quick free icons!
When I was making Subvi I was always strucked by the fact that I had to make an icon, or find it somewhere where I always had to pay for it.
Now, if you go to Google, and then ->  image search, and you type in "(name) 32x32" you get around 50.000 icons for free!
they are all on 32x32 format. just download them, drag and drop to your Icon on the editor, and there you go!
    Good luck!

    Use the Microsoft Clipart!
I usually open Microsoft Word, use insert picture -> clip art...
Search for a picture that suits my vi, and paste it into the doc. You can cut and paste at this point, but most of the Microsoft clipart is vector based. You have two choices
    1. Copy the image to the clipboard in Word, then open the icon editor, select a region that represents the aspect ratio of the image you are using and Edit-Paste. The interpolation of large graphics is sometimes poor.
    2. Resize the clipart in Word (or whatever) to a size that represents an icon (32x32) Use Windows alt-printscreen. switch to LabVIEW and the icon editor and paste (DO NOT seect a region). Use the arrow keys to scroll the pasted image around until the graphic that you want is in view.
See my example 7.1 vi attached. I used the same high-res version of the clipart as the decal for my button....
If you're looking for system type icons (printers, USB devices, security, etc) try downloading the Nuvola icon set from http://icon-king.com/?p=15 The icons come in different sizes, and are ready to go!

  • Fade out of song? Fade icon does seem to do the trick.

    Hello,
I have Logic Pro (Academic Version, which I believe should be the same as the full version--except I cannot update to the next version).
I'm trying to fade out the end of the song, except I can't seem to do it with the fade icon. I can't seem to do it with any of my individual files with some exception.
How can I achieve that typical 80's fade out of a song at the end? And what am I doing wrong?
    Thank you in advance.

For that, you'll need a time machine, mine rents out at 1,200 USD one way trip to that particular decade. You're not doing anything wrong, you are just using the wrong tool for what you wat to do,which is to fade out the entire mix.

  • Office 2013, click icon nothing happens, no errors, no eventlog, MANY clients with this issue

We're an IT solutions provider for companies of all sizes as well, as residential users, and we've been plagued by a new Microsoft-caused issue that's seriously affecting our client's perception of us since it seems like 'you didn't fix it the first
time' or 'you sold us the computer', so it's our responsibility to fix for free.
We've experienced this with 17 people so far, ranging from residential clients with systems that have come from big box stores and from systems we've sold with Microsoft Office 2013 and basically the entire suite stops working.
If you click an icon, you may see an hour glass for a few seconds and nothing happens (but usually nothing happens at all, as though you didn't click it).
    Diagnostic steps:
No errors in eventlog, neither under system or application.
No third party add-ins, sometimes it's a stock install on a new / fresh system.
Starting Microsoft Office applications in safe mode, like winword /safe, has no effect.
A quick repair or an online repair will not resolve the issue, it will say it's done but issue still exists.
Microsoft Office 2013 cannot be uninstalled, we always receive the same error code: 0-4
Some systems do not have third party antivirus, some are simply using Microsoft Security Essentials.
This affects all Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook.
Makes no difference if you use another user account or run-as admin.
All Microsoft Office 2013 updates have been installed.
The installation source is undetermined but recent issues stemmed from a physical media (.ISO) install from Microsoft's latest source.
You cannot start the software by clicking on documents created with Office applications.
The only way to remove Microsoft Office 2013 is with the removal tool "O15CTRRemove.diagcab".
The problem returns after a random period of days and no client can relay the actual cause of the issue, it seems random in nature. After the issue is experienced, we go through the same steps including the necessity to utilize the removal tool.
This seems to be a new issue that's come out of the blue within the past few weeks, at least on our end. When 17 random people call out of the blue with the same problem, it suggests it's Windows Update related.
I'm really hoping someone has some insight into this Microsoft glitch and knows of a secret hotfix or special trick to prevent it. I attempted to call Microsoft and it would be more enjoyable to punch a concrete wall since you're dealing with useless people
in a foreign country who can't really comprehend the seriousness or technicality of the issue, and don't really care, and aren't skilled enough to provide
    insight.
Does anyone know about this problem?

    Thank you for the reply.
I understand the flash you are receiving while launching Excel or Word is very fast. However just wanted to check if it is possible to get a screenshot of it.
Also, are you able to work fine on Excel or Word even after receiving the flash.
It seems the Office installation might have not been done properly.
There is a possibility, everytime you Uninstall any application, there are still some patches left behind which could cause an issue while Installing the same application again or even after Installation is successful, it sometimes gives
    issue while launching the application.
If you want to give a try, you may try to Uninstall the product using Offscrub by clicking on the below link & then can have a fresh installation again.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501
Please let me know the status update once done
Abhijeet, the box flash happens too fast for me to capture a screenshot of it but I believe it's similar to the smaller box activation process (enter your email).
Word and Excel work fine whenever this is observed.
I'm skeptical that this is a "not done properly" kind of scenario, especially when it applies to so many people and many have brand new computers. How can you take a Microsoft Office disc and install it improperly on a new PC? Or how can a person
go through Microsoft's https://officesetup.getmicrosoftkey.com/ setup, use the software for months and suddenly it stops working? If this is a 'not done properly' scenario, then this is a failing of Microsoft's
installation source. I can't reiterate this enough, the software works fine for people since installation date and then randomly stops working at a much later date (but many of them failed last month and this is a newer issue).
I'm starting to get frustrated again as I'd already stated we've used your linked removal tool in my first post and the problem has returned for another user by which I'd used it and reinstalled the product. The client who's PC we have now, one we'd sold
them, needs to be returned to them and while Microsoft Office is currently working, I was told that if this happens again, they're "going to throw the f#(*@ computer in the river". No joke.
If we're at the point where we've moved past evaluating logs, registry keys, or file versions or anything along the lines of a developer determining how this Microsoft bug occurs, then I'll return the system back to the client and hope for the best.
Three strikes and I'm out with this one but perhaps the delayed startup is the final solution... I just wish I knew for sure as we've had a bad year taking a beating for Microsoft's products and their support is the worst in the industry.
It's further frustrating that since I'd touched base with Microsoft via phone calls, the only person who's been able to provide any insight into the issue is me.

  • Downloading to the Deskptop on top of old icons

    Hi all,
So on my old macbook when I had Leopard I had all my stuff download to the desktop (hate the download folder) and it was fine no problems. Then I upgraded to snow leopard and when I downloaded it to the deskptop, rather than like setting itself up in a blank space, it would download on top of another icon. This gets annoying when you are downloading multiple things at once since multiple things will be stacked upon each other. Then I bought a new computer and I used the setup assistant to migrate all my stuff over. The problem still continues. How do I get it so that it won't download on top of the Mac HD icon in the top left corner every time, when there are blank spaces everywhere?

bglick, do you back up your Mac? What I'm going to suggest shouldn't be a problem but do it first anyway, (to a bootable clone). Also this will solve the vast majority of your problems but it won't be a silver bullet.
Simply rename your hard drive, you should be able to do it in the finder. Highlight it in the sidebar of a Finder window and right click it.
The trick is to rename it from +'MAC HD'+ to +' MAC HD'+.
Don't know if you noticed but there's a space in front of the second one. Finally, Finder-->View Options-->arrange by--> Name.

  • Secret dragging tricks and keyboard shortcuts - are these published anywhere?

I have searched for some and stumbled upon others. But I have not seen any of these published or posted anywhere. If so, can you tell me? Either way, you may find some useful ones here. Enjoy! (I think most of these work in Lion. Any keyboard shortcuts you know for Time Machine would be most welcome.)
    *** THE DOCK ***
Press ^F3 to move to the dock. Use the arrow keys to select an icon. You can also use autocomplete (type the first few letters of the icon's name). Then press Opt-arrow_key to move the *icon* among the other icons on the Dock. Thus you can change the order of the icons on the Dock using only the keyboard.
    *** DRAGGING TRICKS ***
    o SAVE-AS SHEET TRICK
Open an app's Save As sheet. Drag a folder or its proxy icon to anywhere in the Save As sheet except the sidebar and that updates the directory (folder) field with that folder. Drag a file or its proxy icon to the Save As sheet (anywhere except the sidebar) and that updates both the directory (folder) and file fields accordingly.
Why do I do this? I find it easier to use the actual Finder, or I may already have a Finder window in the right directory.
You can also click on a directory or file in the Save As sheet to populate the directory or file fields, respectively. Then edit the filename to a slightly different name.
o COPY A FOLDER TREE TO A TEXT DOCUMENT
Open a true text-only editor session using an app like TextWrangler (not TextEdit!). Drag a folder (or its proxy icon) from the Finder into the editor window. Viola`! The names of the folder and all its subfolders and files are pasted into the text buffer in a properly indented form.
o COPY A FILE TO A TEXT DOCUMENT
Drag a file from the Finder into a text-only editor like TextWrangler or similar (not TextEdit!) and the _contents_ of the file (not its icon) are inserted into the document.
o MAKE A NEW FILE THAT CONTAINS SELECTED TEXT
Select some text. Drag it to a folder. This creates a "textClipping" file which contains the selected text. Opens as a "Finder document".
o COPY A PHOTO FROM IPHOTO TO A FOLDER
Open iPhoto. Drag (to copy) a photo to a folder. Makes a jpeg file of the photo in that folder.
    *** KEYBOARD TRICKS ***
    o MENUS AND LISTS
Opt-U/D: Move highlight bar to top or bottom of most menus and lists. Does not work in Spotlight drop-down menu. Works in Snow Leopard Mac Mail (v 4.5, anyway) if you hold it down for a second: you get an error signal, but it works anyway.
PgUp/PgDn | Home/End: Moves highlight bar to top or bottom of menus. Moves only the view for lists.
Opt-Spacebar: Move highlight to the alphabetically first item in a menu (except in the Spotlight drop-down menu).
    o SPOTLIGHT DROP-DOWN MENU
After selecting an item on the drop-down menu via the arrow keys:
    Cmd-Return: Open enclosing folder.
    o SPOTLIGHT WINDOW
If ^F7 is set to "all controls", press ^F7 four times if it's the first search in a particular Spotlight window; two, otherwise. This moves you to the list of results.
If ^F7 is set to "text boxes and lists only", just Tab.
    o CALENDAR WIDGET
Home: go to the current year and month.
Up, down, left, right arrows: go one year back, one year forward, one month back, one month forward. Hold a L or R arrow down to autorepeat through the years. (You can't do _that_ with the mouse!) Also works with U and D for the months.
    o SPELL CHECK
Cmd-Shift-; - Open spelling pane. But you knew that one. Press ^F6 to get to the pane. Tab around to everything except Define and Guess. With the focus on the replacements list, use the arrow keys to select a replacement word from the list. (Press the spacebar to run the control with the highlight perimiter and press Return to run the control with the solid highlighting.)
    o MAIL
Cmd-I - Open Account Info window
    o NAVIGATING HELP PANES
    - Old-style help panes :
Open the menu pane in the usual way. The Highlight perimeter will be on the search window.
Tab: Move among the Search field, the page, and the controls on top. Add Shift to reverse.
    When on the page:
Use the usual navigation keys -- Up, Down, Home, End, Page up, and Page Down, Spacebar, Shift-Spacebar -- to scroll through the page.
Opt-Tab: move among the links on the page or items in a "Help Topics" list. The highlight perimeter will be rectangular. Press Return or Enter to click the selected link or item. Add Shift to reverse direction.
Cmd-F: Open the Find bar. Move about with Tab. Move among the arrows with L or R arrow keys. To find a string: Type your search string in the Find field. Press Return or Enter. Press again to find the next occurrence, etc.
To go to the page from the Find bar: Shift-Tab to the left or right arrow. Then press Shift-Tab two more times.
To close the Find bar: Tab to Done and press the spacebar or just press Escape.
You can return to the app via ^F6, but the help pane stays open.
When the highlight perimeter is on one of the arrow controls, press Spacebar to click it. If the left arrow control is selected press the down arrow to see places going backward. If the right arrow control is selected press the Down arrow to see a list of places going forward. Either way, use the usual menu navigational shortcuts.
When the highlight perimeter is on the Home control, press the down arrow to get a menu of apps. (The mouse way for this is to click and hold and "drag" and release as above.) The usual menu navigational shortcuts are valid. Also, you can press the spacebar to go Home.
When the highlight perimeter is on the Gear button, press the spacebar or down arrow to get the drop-down menu. The usual menu navigational shortcuts are in effect.
(To do any of the above three with the mouse, click on the control and hold the mouse button down, then without releasing the mouse button, move the pointer to highlight the desired item on the menu and release the mouse button.)
    - New-style help panes:
Open the menu pane in the usual way. The Highlight perimeter will be on the search window.
Tab to move around to most things. The table of contents becomes keyboard-active one Tab-press past the Search field, at which point use the L and R arrow keys to navigate the Contents panel, and the U and D arrow keys to move the down and up the page.
To be able to use PageUp and PageDn, Tab to the back/forward button, then press Shift-Opt-Tab.
Cmd-F: Opens the Find bar. Navigate with Tab and L/R arrow keys. When you are on this bar, press Shift-Tab repeatedly until the highlight perimeter moves out. Then press Shift-Tab once more to go back to the page, where the L and R arrow keys move you around the TOC sidebar and the U and D arrow keys scroll the page.
AFAIK, you can choose Get Started or Browse Help only with the mouse.
You can return to the app via ^F6, but the help pane stays open.

I guess you meant that unfortunately these don't have them.
    (1) I meant that, unfortunately for your impressive work, there's nothing in it that hasn't already been documented elsewhere. The two items I mentioned contain your shortcuts, and many more besides.
I don't see any of them in either. I have Pogue's book and they're not there. In fact, I emailed these tricks to him and he was impressed with some of them. And of course there are more. I never claimed to have an exhaustive list. In fact, I doubt anyone has such a list.
    (2) Mac OS X v10.6 has been out for, what is it, 3 years? If you think that there are any 'secret' shortcuts left, then you seriously underestimate the average Mac user. Some of that stuff is even older. For instance, the "Save-As Sheet Trick" dates back to Jaguar, or even before that. "Make a New File That Contains Selected Text" is older than Mac OS X itself!
Well, first of all there's no need to get hostile.
I don't underestimate the average Mac user. But I would venture to guess that most are heavily mouse oriented and would not even be interested in the keyboard tricks I posted. And I only said that I haven't seen them on any website, not that no one else in the world knows about them.
Additionally, there have been things missed by the smartest of people. Stereo vision was missed even by Issac Newton, one of the biggest geniuses to grace the planet! It was Wheatstone who first picked up on it. And it used to be thought that a cube flying by at relatvisitic speed would appear foreshortened in the direction of motion. In fact, as was noted decades after relativity was published, it in fact appears rotated. If super smart people could miss this, then perhaps those few who publish these tricks may not know about them.
Re the save-as trick and the new-file-contains-your-text tricks: fine, they're old, but so are many of the tricks that are posted on websites. So why some old ones but not others? How about cut and paste? I bet they're pretty old but that doesn't prevent people from posting them, as in your first reference!
    (3) Also unfortunately, your listing mixes up shortcuts and 'tricks' of different categories. For instance, "Copy a File to a Text Document" is not secret, it is not a trick, and it is not relevant. What an app does with a file dropped onto an open document of its own does not depend on the system, but on the app and how it was programmed. TextEdit inserts a text file's path while TextWrangler inserts the text file's contents not because the former is not a text editor, but because that's how each was designed to work. And TextWrangler's behaviour is documented in the accompanying manual.
So one of my tricks is lame. I don't see that as that big a deal.
Bottom line: I don't see any of them in the docs you referenced.

To be clear the images I saved using PS CS 5 are showing the icons vs. the images I saved in CC 2014 where the icons are not showing in the "get info" window.
I've compared preference settings with PS 2014 and PS 5 but their basically about the same.
I'm including 2 images so you can see what I'm explaining. IMG_1627 is a PS CC2014 created image and Arturo is a PS 5 image.
I did read about other PS users having similar issues but it looked to be unresolved.
You may think what's the big deal, but I use these image icons to label my folders. A "trick" I've doing for over decade which helps keep my folders visually on track for me.
Is anyone out there able to solve this issue??

I do on occasion get jpgs and pngs that won't render a thumbnail or preview in MacOS.  I have 10.9.5
I don't have this problem, although I just have CC and CC 2014 on my Macbook.
I would open those up in Preview.app and try a Save As... and I would get the thumbnail and thumbnail preview back.
Not really the best idea, but you can see if it helps.
These  are my file saving options, perhaps there is something there you can try.

  • I can not open one more new window of FF by double-clicking on FF icon

I can open only 1 browser window FF
    I want to open another.
    - I can open by selecting NEW WINDOW from the file menu. It's normal.
    - But I can't open by double-clicking on FF icon. The message happens in this case: "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system."
Before double-clicking on FF, I checked processs at Task Manager and just one process "firefox.exe" is running.
I try many ways to troubleshoot this problem such as:
    - install FF again
    - run safe mode
    - Update all add-on
    - add new profile in Profile manager and run with new one
    - I follow the anwser of post: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/770203
    But can't fix this problem.
I'm looking forward to your earliest reply
    Thank so much

There is the Free  iTube Grabber which can capture almost any audio and/or video stream (it says here) but only works with Intel Macs.
    http://itube-grabber.en.softonic.com/mac
Firefox Download Helper is also supposed to work, you have to be logged into YouTube first.
There is also iTubeX which allows you to download videos (Flash, HTML5 and others), .mp3 and .swf files from almost every website as easily as possible:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/27604/itubex
Lastly: How to download Flash videos and play them in Quicktime using Perian is explained here:
    http://perian.org/#watch
It's the video at the bottom of the page.
Last but not least (as some of the above may not work with Snow Leopard or Lion) there is the 'pwn trick':
For example, the full youtube site for your movie is:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bC2XIGMI ... e=youtu.be
As soon as the movie starts, pause it and add 'pwn' in front of the youtube part of the url so it looks like this:
    http://www.pwnyoutube.com/watch?v=bC2XI ... e=youtu.be
Hit Return and then follow the instructions.

  • Word 2013 (Windows 7 64-bit) - Embed PDF as Icon Error

We have a process where we embed PDFs into a table in a Word document as an icon.
This worked for us in Word 2010, but as soon as we upgraded to Word 2013 we started getting an error message.
"The program used to create this object is Package.  That program is either not installed on your computer or it is not responding.  To edit this object, install Package or ensure that any dialog boxes in Package are closed."
Nothing has changed except uninstalling Office 2010 and installing Office 2013.  Acrobat is still there(fully updated XI pro). Acrobat is not open when the attempt to embed is made.
I've tried altering every option I could find that might make this process work, but nothing does the trick.  All software is fully updated as far as I can tell.   It feels like Office 2013 is not keen on the idea of working with PDFs.  The
Acrobat Add-In seems to only promote converting word docs to PDFs, and I found little to no settings referring to PDF embedding or any embedding for that matter.
Does Word 2013 disallow this feature unless you're using Windows 8 and the Windows Reader app?
Any advice would be fantastic.  Thanks.

    Hi,
Please try to insert some PDF files from  Insert tab --> Object --> Create New --> Adobe Acrobat Document
In addition, make sure Adobe Reader is the default application to open the PDF files.
If the issue persists, please try repair or reinstall the latest version of Adobe reader and check this again.

  • ITunes update removes quicklaunch icons and creates new folder each time

Everytime I install an iTunes update, it removes my quicklaunch icon and creates a new start menu folder.  I keep the iTunes start menu folder in a 'Media' subfolder (to keep things organized), but each time I update iTunes on each of my computers it creates a new iTunes folder in the main start menu. Any way to make it stop doing this? Since I work on multiple machines, it can be really irritating to have to redo icons and move folders each time.
Working on PCs (Dell work laptops) running Windows 7.
    Thanks!

Unfortunately it won't go into disk mode. Even tried the "put your ipod on a flat surface" trick. I'm wondering if the battery hasn't stopped holding a charge. But it seems the symptoms would be more like a constant battery icon. Instead I'm getting the sad face everytime I try to put it in disk mode or reset. Ideas? Throw ipod against wall? Blow on it like old-school Nintendo cartridges?
Oh, and yes, it is Windows formatted.
Any and all help would be appreciated.

  • IPod Photo 60GB goes from sad icon to no reaction at all

After getting the sad icon after plugging it in, I took apart the iPod so I could reseat the hard drive and see what happens. I still got the sad icon (yes, sometimes re-seating the hard drive brings it back to life, based on my experiences), so I wanted to try again and put pressure on the center of the hard drive platters with my thumb.
In doing so, I accidentally disconnected the molex connector to the hold-switch. I forgot the state of the hold switch when this happened.
I put everything back together to see what will happen when I plug in the sync/power cable.
There's no reaction and no Apple logo.
How can I bring back the iPod at least back to the sad-icon state?
    Thanks for reading.

I believe you broke the iPod completely, but have a read of the following and see if it helps
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=501330&tstart=0
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ or ifixit at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
    http://www.ifixit.com/
    http://www.rapidrepair.com/shop/g4-ipod-parts.html
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • E-mail attachments appear as viewable page- want icon only

I send many e-mails a day with word and pdf attachments to them, to clients.  Two things I struggle with and hope to solve.
1- I use the Mac mail system.  When I attach a document, sometimes only the icon shows, and sometimes the whole page shows.  From reading other posts, it looks like if the attachment is only 1 page, the whole page shows on my screen.  I DO NOT want that.  I print my e-mails for my files and when the whole page shows, an e-mail that should be 1/2 a page turns into a 4-page e-mail.  A waste of paper and space in my files.  How do I make all the attachments appear as icons?  I have tried right click, "show as icon" and that makes only the icon show on the screen, but when I print the e-mail, the entire page of 1-page attachments print (although smaller), making the e-mail way too long.  HELP!
2- is there a way, when I attach files, for them to appear in a separate line at the top of the message, like for windows/outlook users?  I absolutely hate that whereever my cursor is at the time I do the attachment, that's where the attachment goes to.  I often compose e-mail and then go back to revise something, forget to move the cursor, attach, have to delete, and go back and reattach.
Also I get Windows users who get very confused by my e-mails and keep replying and saying there was no attachment.  I don't know where attachments show up on the other end but I'm getting issues with that, too.
Thank you to any one who can give me solutions!

This is easy enough to do on any individual message. I think the trick most people are looking for is how to make this a default on ALL messages.

    From that link:
Turn off automatic attachment preview in Mail
Mail, by default, provides a preview of attachments in can read, such as graphics and PDF files. However, you can run a command in Terminal to turn this off. Run the following:
defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool yes
Quit Mail and relaunch it. When you view a message, all attachments will be shown as icons only.
To restore the original functionality, run this command:

  • Must-know BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry 10 tips and tricks

Check out the following must-know BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry 10 tips and tricks to get the most out of your new BlackBerry 10 smartphone.
    1) BlackBerry 10's Built-In Screen Shot Feature
Capturing a screen shot on a BlackBerry 10 device is simple. Just hold both the volume up and volume down keys simultaneously for a couple of seconds until you hear a shutter sound. Screen shots are saved to your BlackBerry 10 camera gallery.
    2) Volume Up/Down Keys as Media Controls
You can use your BlackBerry 10 device's volume up and volume down keys to skip through songs in your music librery. To enable this feature, open your BlackBerry 10 Settings by dragging down from the top of your display while on your Active Frames screen or a home screen panel. Choose Settings from the dropdown menu and click System Volume. On the following page, slide the Music Shortcuts button to the On position.
    3) Volume Up/Down Keys and the BlackBerry 10 Camera
You simply tap your BlackBerry Z10's display with the camera or video camera open to snap an image or start recording a video clip. But it's sometimes easier to use the volume keys. Just tap the volume up or volume down keys with the camera open to snap and image. And you can also use these keys to start and stop video capture when your camera's video mode is enabled.
    4) Instantly Launch Voice Control
The BlackBerry Z10 can initiate lots of different actions based on voice commands thanks to its Voice Control app. And you can instantly launch Voice Control by holding your device's mute key for a couple of seconds.
    5) Launch BlackBerry Camera from Lock Screen
BlackBerry 10 lets you quickly launch your camera application from its lock screen, a feature that can be valuable when you want to take spur-of-the-moment shots. A camera icon appears in the bottom-right corner of the locked display screen, and you can hold it for a couple of seconds to launch the camera app.
    6) Advanced BlackBerry Hub Inbox Controls
The BlackBerry Hub is the central inbox for all of you various BlackBerry 10 application notifications and messages. You can access basic Hub controls by clicking the Menu key at the bottom right of your Hub screen. (The Menu key looks like three dots stacked on top of each other.) But you can also access some advanced BlackBerry Hub controls from the date bars that appear in the inbox stream at the start of each new day.
Just hold a finger on a date bar to bring up controls that let you skip to the start of the past day, the start of the next day, jump to the top of the BlackBerry Hub, jump to the bottom of your BlackBerry Hub or mark all prior messages as read.
    7) Speedy BlackBerry 10 Navigation
The BlackBerry 10 OS can be broken down into three main components: The BlackBerry Hub; the Active Frames screen; and your application panels. You can do navigation through these components using a basic set of swipes and gestures. But you can also use the tiny slider tray that appears at the bottom of the Active Frames screen and all of your home panels. Just tap a specific panel in the slide to navigate directly to that panel without scrolling. Touch the Active Frames square, which is composed of four smaller squares, to jump directly to your active apps page. Or tap the Hub button, which looks like three horizontal lines on top of each other, to navigate right to the Hub.
    8) See Your Battery Life Status as a Percentage
The BlackBerry 10 OS does not currently allow you to set your battery-status indicator to show a specific percentage, only a battery icon. But you can check your device's hardware settings for a more specific battery status. Just open your device's Settings by sliding down from the top of your Active Frames or application-panel screen and choose Settings from the dropdown menu. Then click About. On the following screen, change the Category menu from General to Hardware. You'll see a battery percentage listed in the Hardware information.
    9) BlackBerry 10 Boot Status as a Percentage
Whenever you restart or power up your BlackBerry 10 devices, a BlackBerry logo appears with a status bar that encircles it. The status bar shows you start-up progress, but you can also view that progress as a percentage number. Just hold your finger anywhere on the BlackBerry logo and a progress percentage appears.
    10) BlackBerry Z10 Keyboard Tips, Tricks and Shortcuts
You can type special characters using the BlackBerry 10 virtual keyboard by holding your finger on top of a letter with associated special characters (e, a, i, o, u, y, etc.), and then sliding your finger over to the character of your choice.
Quickly sliding your finger downward from the top of your keyboard to its bottom cycles through the number and character screens so you don't have to tap the number/character screens button, which can slow down typing.
And you can delete an entire word instead of just individual letters by swiping leftward from the backspace key toward the center of your keyboard.
