Icon View Issue

I am trying out the new Premiere Pro CS5.5 and I found an odd issue.  I like working in the Icon View when orginizing my media files.  In CS4 you could at will orginize your media anyway you wanted, i.e. row by row and move the rows up or down you could leave a gap in a row and put items after that and such.  In CS5.5, all you can do is put them end to end, you can't have spaces and they wrap around to the next row like a word doc.  To me this seems very inefficient.  Maybe this is a bug but the way it is, it is not very useful anymore!

Peter-
Other weird developments. While this is icon view is more of a nuissance than a problem it has shown some bugs in my system. Turns out I can access Icon view if I use Motion's window layout scheme but if I switch to mine the library window will freeze. I have thrown out my widow layouts and started fresh but it will not work. I was wondering if there are any other files I should trash other than the .plist file?
thanks

  • Finder: graphic issues while in icon view

    Hi there,
my Macbook Pro becomes more and more sluggish since i upgraded to Yosemite. Worst thing i noticed is icon view in Finder. It does not show up correctly and has some weird graphic issues. I made a video while using the guest account: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jo5JUnmK6n4&feature=youtu.be
    Any idea?
    Thank you!
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13', Mitte 2014), 2,8 GHz Intel Core i5, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel Iris 1536 MB

We were discussing this issue on this thread: Re: Anybody else getting black bars on Finder items names?
This graphic issue only appears in icon view as you have stated. The workaround was to put everything in list view.
I have been testing for the last week or so, with Icon view after deleting the com.apple.finder.plist. So far it's a lot better.
My MBP [Late 2013] was a dog after the Yosemite upgrade.
I ended up doing a SMC and PRAM reset, my performance is almost back to normal but not as good as when on Mavericks 10.9.5.
I hope Apple releases update 10.10.1 soon.
    Anyway, hope this helps.

  • Can not see all the clips in large Icon view in my bin

I arranged my clips in a bin in large Icon view but i can not see all the clips in the bin while in that mode. I see the clips when in list mode or when i drag them out of the bin into the main bin. As soon I drag them back in large icon view bin they do not show up, when going back in list view they are there.
    Any idea
Also my daughter accidently pulled the electrical plug, which turned my external hard drive off. So the media was off line. I hit reconnect the clip but the clip does not show as connected in the bin it keeps the Media offline icon but putting the clip in the viewer or time line it plays it. So the clip is reconnected
hope anybody can help with those two issues thanks

    Nick
thanks for your message it helped to show the clips. Here how I solved it. I put the clips i could not see in large Icon view, to the Project folder. Even in the project folder I was only seeing the clips with Thumbnail in list view. When i hit large Icon view the clips disappeared, and they could not have been lower down as i only have about 5 folders in the project. I then clicked arrange the clip by name and they showed up again. Like that i dragged the clip back in to its bin and it showed up. The reason for going back and forth I arranged the clips manually in the bin before and when hitting arrange by name it spread them to far apart and put the clips not in a sequence I liked.
for the second part I followed Neil's suggestion it worked.

  • How do I fix a problem with .eps files not showing up properly in icon view

Actually my .eps files are not showing properly in any of the views but icon view is most important to me.  I am using OSX.8.5 on a mac mini and mac book air.  Almost all of my .eps files are conversions of .wmf files converted to .eps by WMF Converter software.  All of these files used to be on a PC running windows Vista using ST Thumbnails explorer to be able to view thumbnails.  For background info: I had to use a program to view the WMF files becasue hackers could put viruses into the thumbnail for WMF fies so instead of fixing the problem Microsoft disabled the thumbnail view for all WMF files.
A few of my .eps files are conversions of files created in CorelDraw 3x and converted to .eps in CorelDraw 3x.  Both types of .eps files misbehave the same.
I downloaded one .eps file today from the internet to see if it would misbehave the same way (it does).
Here is the problem: After a reboot when I first view a folder that contains .eps files in icon view I can see the file contents fine.  If I use the resize slider at the bottom of the window or resize the window itself then some or all of my .eps files revert to displaying the "generic icon" of a Loupe with a picture behind it.  If i can manage to put the resize slider to exactly where it was then my icons display the file contents as they did before I messed with the slider.  There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when an icon will display as the file contents or when the generic icon comes up.  In some folders all the icons display correctly at the smallest icon size and in other folders the icons may display correctly or as only generic or a mix of generic and file contents.  Icons to files that came from the same source will not necessarily display the same way.  Icons to files that came from the same source and were converted by WMF Converter at the same minute do not necessarily display the same way.  If I display "info" for the files sometimes the previev pane of the info box will display the generic icon or sometimes it will show the file contents.  If I take an .eps icon that displays properly and drop it into a folder where all .eps icons are displayed as generic then that icon displays generic.  When I move that same icon out of that folder then it will display properly.  Icon view, list view, column view and cover flow view all display differently with no discernable pattern.  Sometimes I can see file contents in column view and not icon view.  Sometimes in cover flow and not in icon view.  It makes no difference if I have a handful of .eps files in a folder or hundereds of files in a folder.  After an undetermined amount of time the icons might display properly again or maybe not.
What I have done so far:  exhaustive search of the internet did not find anyone else with the same issue.  I checked and fixed all disk permission errors that disk utilities would fix.  I know that icon view and quick look are two different things, but, I did however, download and install an eps quicklook plugin that did not seem to make a difference for my issue.  BTW Quick look sometimes works and sometimes not (no discernable pattern to this behavior either).  I tried the cnet download fix for quicklook just for grins.  It had me force QL to reload plugins and it's cache then I cleared out the QL configuration files.  This did not seem to make a difference in the behavior of icon view or Quicklook.  The only two things I have found to be consistant are 1)  The "open with preview" always works but I know this is different because this preview actually generates a pdf view of the file. 2) When the icon does display the file contents it always displays correctly.
When you read this please be mindful of:  I am a Microsoft refugee not yet familiar with the Apple world so you may have to tell me how to do "simple" things.  I have no idea what is the difference between a "thumbnail" or a "preview" or the behind the scenes way that apple generates the icon appearance for the 4 different views.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  I tried to insert a screen shot but got an error message when I did it.

Was the error number really 0XE8....

  • Unable to click on file in list view to open from fcp. Works from icon view, however.

I have intermittant issues importing files and folders into Final Cut Pro. When the window to select the file or folder I want pops up, I often don't have the ability to select an item when the window is in list view, but when I switch to icon view, the open button loses its greyed out appearance and I'm able to select a file or folder.
I'm running FCP 7.0.3 and OS 10.5.8. At first thinking this could be an OS issue, I tried attaching a file to an email within Chrome and didn't have a problem selecting and opening files from a list window.
I trashed my FCP preferences and user data info, hoping this would resolve the issue, but it hasn't. Thoughts?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Thanks, Luis. I had selected FCP 7 in the drop down. Not sure how it got moved to X. And don't see an edit option on my original post.

  • Icon View in Finder using Yosemite

I currently upgraded to Yosemite from Mavericks, but I've noticed that when using Finder (and it defaults to opening files via Icon view) I don't see my files.
When I switch to list or column view, I see my files.
    Anyone else having this problem?

I have the same issue on my rMBP 15". I reported this as well during the open beta. I went back to my Mavericks backup because I though it might have to something with the installation. Now I installed the final and the problem is back.
Sometimes the files do show up but the name tag is distorted and interacting with them, e.g. selecting them, opening folders, works but Finder will still show the files with the distorted names although I'm already in another folder. I made some screenshots.
Already reset the PRAM, repaired the drive and permissions with no effect.
Edit: it happens very randomly when opening folders or new finder windows. The only thing where I can see regularity is when unzipping a file – that folder will initially always be broken.

  • Photos (JPGs) won't display in Finder Icon view

Ever since upgrading, many folders (including new ones that I create on my Desktop and elsewhere) have problems displaying JPGs that are added to the folder when using icon view (thumbnails). Basically, the window appears empty. If I change the view to list, column, or cover flow, then they appear fine. This has happened with about 80% of my folders.
Anyone else have this issue? Any known fixes?
It drives me crazy since I use the thumbnail (icon) view all of the time and never had problems with Mavericks.
The only workaround (which works sometimes) is to copy all of the JPGs to another folder. This seems to regenerate the thumbnails for some reason. But later the same folder ceases to work again. So I'm not sure what is going on. Using a mid 2012 macbook pro retina, 2.7 i7 and 16GB of RAM.
Apple needs to fix this if it is a widespread problem.

Great suggestion! Unfortunately it didn't make any difference.
However, I have more details on this bizarre issue:
If I reboot the Mac (safe mode or regular mode), the icons do appear. But if I copy or move the files to a new folder, they are invisible again.
Also, if I copy the folder full of JPGs into a new folder, then open the new folder, the subfolder is also hidden in icon view.
If I choose Edit > Select All, the Finder window shows the correct quantity of files in the folder that are selected (even though they are all invisible).
I've tried changing from discrete to integrated graphics, changing the display resolution, but so far nothing works (except the temporary fix of rebooting).

  • Low-rez or no thumbnails in Cover Flow & Icon views!

Cover Flow used to display sharp and clear high-resolution jpeg previews, but now it display either low-rez previews for most or nothing at all for some. In Icon view, the Finder used to be able to generate thumbnails for jpeg files that don't have icons, but now many jpeg files are just blank in Icon view.
Does this have anything to do with the newer updates?

This problem hit me suddenly about two days ago. Can't seem to fix it. Haven't tried rebuilding Spotlight index yet, trying to avoid it, but that might solve the issue. Perhaps before I leave for the day that's what I'll do, and see how things are in the morning.
FYI, others have this issue as well:

  • Why won't my folders in finder expand in the icon view?

My folders will not expand in the icon view in finder. They also don't expand in the cover flow view, only list and column view show the contents within folders. It's affecting all the items in finder's sidebar. I found this rather bizarre. Has any one had a similar issue?

  • Finder bug in icon view. can anyone help me?

So, I'm experiencing a weird bug since I've installed OS X Mountain Lion.
When I set 'show items as icons' in Finder, the font used to label the files and folders are most of the time kinda messed up.
(they're not the normal black clean fonts, but they are like a really pale ugly and hard to read gray color)
And it's not like I'm using different fonts of whatever, it's a font smoothing/rendering issue.
If I turn off the 'Use LCD font smoothing when available', fonts are OK again.
The problem is that when I enter another folder, they are messed up again. Then I enable again the font smoothing option and they are ok (for that folder).
When I go back to the parent folder, they are gray again.
Also, when I make them "OK" with the LCD font option switch, they also become "NOT OK" as soon as I select them. (not individually, but making a box...yeah, weird uh?)
Really weird. I've tried to restart/ force quit the finder (which again, fix the issue just within the home folder) / adjust permission (maybe I've messed up something, I dunno).
Btw, it is not a clean install and I remember experiencing the same problem with Lion, one of the first days I've installed it, but then it went away (forever) after a day, so I didn't bother too much to find the cause.
Again, it seems like some sort of finder bug, the million question is: Why am I (apparently) the only one experiencing it? Thx for help

    Hi Giorgiovdb!
Unfortunately I cannot help you; all I did was test for you.
I did an upgrade over my Lion install with Mountain Lion which went fine. I just tested icon view in my Finder on different files and folders and here in my installation all stays fine; good readable like in column view!
The only thing you might try is change your Font in Finder and set it back to the original afterwards!
I quickly Google'd how to change fonts in the Finder as appearantly there's no obvious gui item for it:
    http://usermanifest.wordpress.com/2012/07/06/osx-finder-title-bar-font/
Try to see if it brings you anywhere!
At my post all fonts act normal after my upgrade to Mountain Lion; I don't do a clean install unless I really have to!
    Goodluck!

  • Changing the sorting in the Icon view

This has been giving me a headache since I upgraded to Lion since it was released. I deal with very large numbers of files of various types and since OS X first was released it was easy for you to sort items in a folder by type however with Lion Apple dropped the ball on this. In the Icon View it is foolish not to have the folders listed first in the sort or arrange order. If you have folders that have folders in them to help separate large projects it used to be simple to navigate but now Apple has made this simple navigation task a total pain. Since you have to scroll down to get to the sub folder and heaven help you if you have to do this several times. There is no good reason not to allow the user to change the sort order. A simple search shows I am not alone in this and Apple has yet to respond this problem.
We are up to version .3 on lion and this still is a nightmare. I understand and agree with the strategy to make iOS and OS X to be similar for the novice user but to do so by sacrificing the functionality of OS X is well stupid. If I wanted an iPad I would have bought one  not a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro to work on. You cant run the programs I use a super sized iPhone. Till you can please don’t cripple OS X. It can't be a huge task to allow the user in the icon view to chose ascending or descending order and lock that choice in. Also have it automatically adjust the arrangement if you resize the window so you dont have to scroll side ways only up or down.
Finder worked like this since I switched to Mac's back in 2002. I have been very happy with OS X and Apple till this change. This is not a small issue for me. I have counting external and internal drives totaling 14 TB's of storage and add about 1 TB a month with the projects I now have. I hope this gets fixed soon it has me worried that Apple is solely catering to the iPad and iPhone users. I didn't spend nearly 10K$ for a new workstation and laptop to have it function like an iPad.
For the record I do like the iPad but you can't run Photoshop, MS Office, Poser or CAD programs on an iPad and if you could it would take it weeks to do some of the tasks that a dual quad core can do in minutes.
There are ways to bring back many functions that were changed in Lion such as hiding the scroll bar or reversing the scrolling direction why not retain the sort options that your customers have been using for years? This small change reduces productivity and thus reducing my profit margins and not to mention increasing aggravation.

I actually didn't read your whole dissertation, but if you want to know about sorting in the Finder, then this is how it works:
There are two modes of organizing the layout of the items in the Finder. There is an Arrangement which is grouping similar characteristics together. Then, there is sorting which sorts the items by some criteria, like name, date, etc.
The Arrangement and Sorting functions are both in the same menu item or button on the toolbar. Arrangement is primary, and Sorting is secondary. You can get to the Sorting options by holding down the option key and clicking on the button or menu option.
You can have both an Arrangement and a Sort, depending on the Arrangement chosen.  Arranging by Name or Date doesn't offer any other sorting options. Arranging by Kind, or Application, or Label will allow you to sort each group by some criteria chosen from the Sort options.
If you Arrange by None, you can sort by any of the other criteria.
I have run into a bug where you can choose the sort order once arranged. You can usually reverse the sort order by going into List View, arrange by None, and set the sort direction in the column headers.

  • Why is there no functionality for multiple select of continuous icons in icon view?

I have just switched to my first mac.  I admit I am experiencing growing pains switching over from a PC.  I am already overcoming many of these, but I have one issue in particular that for the life of me, I don't know why apple engineers left out.
Why is it that I can select continuous multiple items by clicking "shift + first icon" and "shift + last icon" in the finder in list, column, and cover flow views, but NOT in the icon view?
I realize a work-around for this would be to use a selection box and then to de-select the images I don't want.  This is the best option I have at this point, but honestly, I am extremely dissapointed that I have to even have a "work-around."  Simply put, this should not be an issue.
I prefer icon view when superficially browsing my photos because I can see all my photos at the same time and change the thumbnail size.  There is no view besides icon view that has easy access to changing thumbnail size.  Therefore, there is no view at all that offers the functionality of changing thumbnail size AND selecting multiple items.  This functionality is standard in PC operating systems for icon view.  The multiple select in combination with changing thubmnail size is also extremely useful for me when transferring select files to external devices.  For example...I may be giving files to a family member on their jump drive.  As a teacher, I am often exchanging jump drives with other teachers for class photos, documents, etc., and being able to visually spot the items I want and to use continuous select is sometimes the easiest way to search within a folder.
I called in to apple technical support and most of the people I spoke with were surprised to see that this functionality had been "left out" of the icon view in the finder.
If the multiple select functionality cannot be added to icon view, it would be nice if the slider for changing thumbnail size was available in list or column view.  That way, I could at least have multiple select functionality in conjuction with the option of enlarging items.
Please participate in this thread if you want this functionality added to the finder icon view!

I don't think that Apple thinks that's a workaround.  It is the way one goes about selecting multiple icons.
It's a Mac/Windows difference that can be frustrating to new comers to the Mac.  I can promise you that, with time, you'll get used to it!
Still, as macjack suggests, let Apple know what you think.
    Matt
It may be a Mac/Windows difference, but Apple are not being consistent with their UI because in both Aperture and iPhoto you can do Shift-click to select multiple items in thumbnail view which, apart from the name, is the same interface type as icon view in Finder.
Like the OP, I find this frustrating, not because I use Windows as well (at work) but because of the above and because it just seems illogical not to be able to do this when you can in all the other views in Finder. Oh, and Linux allows Shift-click multiple select too.

  • Icon view, icon position not kept

Most of my files are displayed in icon view. I have group them in positions easy to remember.
Since upgrading to SL every now and then a folder (or two) will have the icons ordered by name and positioned in a grid even if I haven't give that command.
Since this is annoying is there a solution to avoid that finder behavior?

ok, that may be the reason for not keeping the icon positions but who except the finder will be responsible for a corrupt .DS_store file?
There are other Finder problems not only on my MacBook Pro but also on the MacBooks running in our household since we upgraded to SL. These problems usually result in a spinning ball of death and one has to press the ON switch to restart the Mac.
I haven't seen such issues in all previous upgrades from Mac OS X onwards. This is really disappointing since the SL upgrade was announced as a minor one but now it turns out as a nightmare to me.

  • Can't view most folders in icon view, it just crashes.

When I try to do icon view in most folders, finder freezes and restarts. But the strange thing is that icon view works in most sections of my home folder.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjyHbiO_cY4

Try another user account to see if it is only in your account.
Also, try starting in Safe Mode which will disable any third-party extensions that might be interfering.
If either of those prevent the issues, we can try to sort it out from there.

  • Snap-To-Grid Finder feature doesn't work for mounted data CDs (Icon View)

I always use Icon View in Finder. And I AM aware of the CMD+J --> Arrange by --> Snap-To-Grid feature. I've set it for all my other Finder windows for my startup drive, and it works. (Actually, I set it to auto-arrange by Kind.) I've even used it as the default setting by clicking the "Set As Defaults" button at the bottom of the View Options window.
But there seems to be a weird glitch where every time I insert a burned data CD with icon folders and such, my Finder window always opens a mess of icons, one on top of each other. I keep setting it back to CMD+J --> Arrange by --> Kind, and the icons organize into grids right after. I click "Set As Defaults" again. But when I eject the CD, then mount it again, Finder gives me a mess of one-on-top-of-the-other icons all over again. What gives? I just want to be able to set all my files to auto-arrange in Finder by Kind.

But when I eject the CD, then mount it again, Finder gives me a mess of one-on-top-of-the-other icons all over again
    Of course it will.
The CD is read-only - it can't be written to. Since the window position, view settings, layout, etc. are stored in the directory, there's no way for the Finder to write the changed settings back to the disk before you eject it.
The issue occurs because what you're seeing is how the window was laid out when the disk was burned in the first place.
Your solution is to re-burn the disk, positioning the icons where you want them before starting the burn.
