Icons and Desktop

is there a way in leopard to lock dow the desktop so user cannot delete icons or folders on the desktop? I am not using any mac servers for logins just user accounts

Sadly for you, the "Keep arranged by name" setting (under the View Options… menu when you've clicked on the Desktop) assumes we all want Apple's traditional on line up on the right.
If your're deperate for this, you can double click the Desktop icon in your shortname folder (you can also drag it to the dock to place a 'poofter' there for easier access) which opens your Desktop in a standard window, whose View Options… will alphabetise the icons on the left. Adorn it w/ a background pic that matches your Dtop, click the toothpaste blob at the top right to get rid of the brushed tool/sidebar junk-look and expand it to fill the screen and you're sorta close. Anything placed there will also appear on your 'real DT'. Now you have both worlds.
The question has arisen before; you might find a Search digs up more info. You might consider sending Apple a Feedback, asking for the option. It might be more persuasive if you said why, but then again: Why not?

• Odd-color icons and desktop wallpaper after Migration Assistant

My hard drive on my Mini recently started doing the "click of death," so I replaced it with a newer drive. I completely erased the new HD and installed a fresh copy of Leopard with the 10.5.7 combo updater, then ran Migration Assistant to copy over my apps and files.
Everything is working fine, except that some of my icons and wallpaper are the wrong colors. For instance, the Finder icon is purple instead of blue, the ladybug on the wallpaper is green instead of red, and all the buttons and icons in Firefox are also the wrong colors. I have done the usual maintenance tasks and rebooted, but they are still the same.
Besides totally re-installing and skipping the Migration Assistant, is there a way to correct the colors?

Actually it sounds like something odd happened with your monitor calibration. Go to System Preferences, click on the Displays preference, then click on the Color tab. Is your display's profile listed? If it is, and the correct one is selected, you might try clicking the Calibrate button and work your way thru the steps, then save as a new profile.

• Icons and desktop alignment

I have two questions (I think they fit under this category):
1) How do I set my iBook to align the items on my desktop to the left side and organize them by name?
2) The icons of my iPhoto, mp3s, etc keep changing to random other icons. How can I fix this?
Thanks!

• Dock Icons and desktop video issue

I downloaded Lion yesterday and ever since, the destop background is blurry in some areas and when I scroll across the docked icons I get black backgrounds each icon I scroll across. It almost seems like my video card cannot handle the graphics. However, it does seem to work fine if I use the solid color option under desktop and screensaver. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Drag applications from your main desktop off the right side of the screen and they will appear on the TV. This is the extended desktop mode.

• Ask your question.please help itunes will not launch on my computer the icon on desktop has changed to a white folder no error message appears and it appears but then disappears in task manager when the programme will not open quick time is working

please help i need to fix my itunes it will not launch on my computer . no error message appears it simply will not run. the icon on desktop has changed to a white folder and it still appears in programmes in start menu but will not open. it appears in task manager but disappears when the programme will not open

You music etc should not be affected by problems with the iTunes program, nevertheless it is always a good idea to backup your data.
You haven't said if there was any error message when you tried to start iTunes. If there was one please give it in full.
Also check to see if QuickTime works, iTunes can not work without it. If QuickTime doesn't work, it has to be fixed before worrying about iTunes.
Then restart your PC and open your Task manger and select the Processes tab.
Try to start iTunes, does iTunes.exe appear on the processes tab? If so does it disappear again or remain although the programs does not open?

• I've lost the finder and desktop icons

Purchased new iMac 10 days ago but did not immediately transfer data from old computer. When I did, I transferred from a Backup on Time Machine using Migration Assistant . I did not merge the two users I had the New Jon (new computer) and the Old Jon (old computer transferred to the new one). I transferred applications and documents but did not transfer the computer and network settings. My reason for two users was that I knew there were programs on the old iMac (10.9.5, early 2008) that did not work on 10 and I was hoping to cherry pick.
However, the new iMac (10.10.2) wasn't seeing any of the desktop files in either user from the old Mac. I decided to delete Old Jon keeping New Jon and starting over again. When I did that, none of the Old Jon applications were deleted and are usable for both users AND the Finder is missing. Clicking on Finder it says that the Finder can't be opened. The finder had been working on both users on the new computer up to the point at which I deleted Old Jon.
Interesting to note that at one time (I don't remember if I was upgrading from 9 to 10 or it was a 10 upgrade) but the Finder on the old Mac also disappeared. I was on forums and seemed to be a problem that many people had. For me, the only thing that seemed to work was opening Activity Monitor and force quitting Window Server and after that the finder and desktop icon showed up. So I'm thinking it must be a program or file I have on the old computer. So, I thought I'd try downloading 10.10 figuring if I reinstalled I would get where back to an "out of the box" computer.
Even though it said I was downloading 10.10 the new install said it was still 10.10.2. All of the applications from the old Mac were still there and there was still no finder. I created a couple of new identities in the New Jon computer. Both of them have access to the finder but the Main identity does not. I have noticed that if you log under under one of the new identities and then go to the Main identity the Finder is there - but not if you log into the Main Identity first.
Can anyone give me hint as what I might do to where I might look or steer me to another forum? Hope this isn't too confusing. Thank you so much

• I have just clicked on my iTunes desktop icon and got the following message "The file iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Why has this occurred when it working fine?

I have just clicked on my iTunes desktop icon and got the following message "The file iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Why has this occurred when it working fine? Is it best to update iTunes to 10.2 to attempt to resolve? Initially I got the prompt Quicktime was out of date so I updated that successfully in all programs. I do not want to lose my iTunes library.

Sorted problem updated and reinsatlled and restarted computer.

• I just updated my ipod touch and when I go into itunes, it shows the icloud icon and I can't see any of my music. I can see that the music is there from my desktop. Is there someway I can shut the icloud "thing" down so that I can just access my music?

I have just updated the itunes software on my two older ipod touches. Now when I try to access itunes. all I get is the icloud icon and it spins endlessly so I never get to see my music library. I can see from my desktop that my music is still on the device. I just want to be able to access my music library. How can I get past the iclud icon?

• Mac Mini desktop folders/icons and top menu blinking on and off

Hello. I've just returned to my Mac Mini after being away for a few days. Upon booting and having the desktop fully load, I have been experiencing all folders/icons and top menu bar blinking on and off every ten seconds. I have only opened Fire Fox to try and diagnose why this is happening. No solution yet.
I am running Snowleopard with Mavericks and I'm aware Mavericks is a little buggy at the moment (beach ball used to blink on and off every now and again and performance has gotten slow) I only have the HDD replaced last week as the last one failed. I really need to fix this problem soon as I rely on my Mac to work from home.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I have sovled the problem! for now at least. I came across another users suggestion to dissable "sync status icons" in google drive as it confics with the finder in Mavericks. I guess this would only work with others having this problem with Google Drive and Mavericks.

• I cannot get my update to work at all . The firefox app icon and arrow pointing to the Applications file appears on my desktop again and again. I keep putting in the folder but it refuses to work. I have Mac OSX 10.6.8

I downloaded the update file and moved in to the Applications folder as asked , it is there as an alias . There is a new icon on my desktop . I cannot move to the dock however . I click on both this icon and the one in apps and it keeps giving me my original box with Firefox icon, arrow and apps folder. I am going round and round and getting no where!

See:
*https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Installing+Firefox+on+Mac
Make sure that Firefox gets installed properly.
Open the Firefox disk image (DMG) file with a double-click if necessary and drag the Firefox program to the application folder on your hard drive.
You shouldn't double-click the Firefox application to run it from the disk image, but drag it out of the DMG folder instead.
• I downloaded the lates version of iTunes. Now, every icon on my desktop now is the iTunes icon and will only launch iTunes. The same is true with almost everything in "All Programs" from my start menu. Uninstalling brought desktop back to normal.

After upgrading to the latest version of iTunes, it changed all desktop icons to the iTunes icon and will only launch iTunes. I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and the same problem occured. Help.

Yes i've tried all of that. I've turned it all the way on and off and erased all of my music and put it back on and nothing works. And with the breaking up CDs and putting into compilation categories i have already fixed all of that stuff. It's fine it just doesn't show up in the list of artists. I can find the album in the songs category and the albums category it's just it doesn't show tha name of the artist. All of the other albums that i downloaded before i updated my itunes to th most recent update are fine. It's just the two that i downloaded afterwards. Thanks for trying though.

Go to Solution.

When you elect to show hidden files, you'll see things like the $Recycle.Bin folders and desktop.ini files. That's just the way Windows works.
Desktop.ini files, BTW, are what tell Windows Explorer how to lie about what it sees in a folder.

I have just selected all my desktop icons and accidentally deleted them. This included my external hard drive with 22,000 photos in iPhoto. I cannot open iPhoto now. Can someone help please?

What is the file system of that external HD? is it MacOS Extended (Journaled)?
Which iPhoto version do you have?
If you directly select the iPhoto Library in the Finder and use "File > Get Info", does the library still show as "Kind: iPhoto Library" and is the file size correct for 22000 Photos?
If the library does no longer have the correct size, restore it from your backup.
But if the library has the correct size, try to open it directly by clicking it. This should work, if your iPhoto version is iPhoto '11.
