Icons and Flash Movies covered in blocks of dots (like static) after upgrade to Snow Leopard!

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard my icons and all web based flash content are covered in blocks of moving dots - almost like static. Movies playing in iTunes or Quicktime are fine and images displayed in Photoshop etc. are all OK. I'm guessing it's something to do with my graphics card - ATI Radeon HD 4870 - any ideas anyone? Thanks!
It looks like someone else has had this problem too, a while back, but no solution posted…

Glad it's not just me, but it's still frustrating all the same.

After upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion I cannot access a PGP drive which was generated under snow leopard. PGP does not start. When I try to start I just receive a message that Lion cannot work with PGP. How can I now access important and confifential informatio which I have stored in PGP (snow leopard). Do I have to move back to snow leopard. If so, how can I do this?

    If you have this product,

you have to go back to Snow Leopard.
To re-install SL, back up your home directory, format and re-install.

After upgrading to Snow Leopard, Mail will not let me archive any mail. All archived messages re-appear in my inbox (I have tried archiving and placing in the trash bin). How do i regain control of my inbox?

The main differences that can cause a problem are scripting additions (64-bit vs 32-bit and security reasons) and the usage of dates (it is not as forgiving). AppleScript itself is basically the same, so if empty paragraphs are what caused your problems the update would have just been a coincidence.

  • After upgrading to snow leopard my Epson printer drivers did not load and i get an error 'rasteroescpll failed'. I have tried reloading the driver to no effect. Can anyone help?

I have just upgraded to Snow Leopard and at the end of the upgrade the printer drivers failed to load. I have since updated them myself (Epson BX305) but still get an eror message 'rasteroescpll failed'. can anyone help?
I have an Imac previously running 5.8.0 and now running 6.3.0.
    thank you
    Hugh

The current driver version is 8.67.
    Delete you printer.
    Delete the folder /Library/Prnters/EPSON
    Delete the folder /Library/Caches/Epson
Unplug your printer from your computer for 30 seconds and then plug it back in.  You should be prompted to download the new drivers.
If all that fails, you can get the new drivers from Apple at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1398

  • Trouble with Safari and keychain after upgrade to Snow Leopard

I just upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard.  Previously in Safari (with Leopard), when logging in to a website, I entered the first character of my login and, depending on the settings in Keychain, the login/password was autofilled or I was prompted for my Keychain Access password and then it autofilled. This worked great because no one could use my laptop and be able to log in to sensitive websites without my Keychain Access password. And, because I have multiple accounts on some websites, I could choose which login ID to use based on the first character. I don't know if Safari was set to autofill or not, but I suspect not because I never wanted autofill.
After I upgraded to Snow Leopard, Safari would not connect to Keychain at all. I figured out I had to check Safari's autofill User Names and Passwords box in order for it to recognize Keychain. But now it autofills whenever I land on a website login page, even though the Keychain items are set to require my Keychain password. Further, for those websites that have multiple accounts, Safari is autofilling the one that is first listed in Keychain.
What do I need to do for Safari to use Keychain Access without immediately autofilling (like it did with Leopard)?

Yes, thank you. I have done that on most of them and it works well.  My frustration is that the autofill in Safari seems to be the only way to engage Keychain.  When I don't select autofill in Safari, I can't engage Keychain at all (without manually opening it and viewing an individual key).  I'd like to be able to activate Keychain selectively as I did in Leopard.
For those sites where I have multiple accounts, I have discovered that if I deny the first pop-up from Keychain, I can then delete the autofilled login and enter the first character of the one I want, and the pop-up appears again. It's just frustrating to have to take those extra steps.

  • Beachballing and "disk0s10: I/O errors" after upgrading to Snow Leopard

Here's my situation: I recently upgraded my iMac (2.93 Ghz Intel Core Duo, 4GB of ram, model id is 9.1) from Leopard to Snow Leopard. I did a basic install (not a clean install), the installation went smoothly, no errors were reported and in less than 40 minutes I was up running Snow Leopard.
But... immediately, on the first launch, after a couple of minutes my Mac started beachballing, leaving it completely unresponsive for like 5 minutes. Afterwards, the spinning pinwheel disappears, my Mac continues running normally, and I don't experience much issues. At first I thought it was a one time thing, probably saving some settings up after the first launch, but... it has been happening every time I start my computer! Every time, it starts up, all my startup programs launch, the desktop icons appear, and then suddenly after a couple of minutes it starts beachballing again.
I now start to suspect there's something wrong. I launch the Console and take a look at the logs. There at the exact same time the beachballing occurs, i find like 3 or 4 subsequent "disk0s10: I/O errors". Now I'm starting to think it's a hard disk issue, so I bring up Disk Utility and check the S.M.A.R.T., it says everything is OK. I verify the disk, and it says everything is OK. Now I don't know what to suspect.
Something tells me it's not the hard disk failing (maybe it's denial), because the problem started happening immediately after installing Snow Leopard. With Leopard I didn't have any problems at all. Also, once the beachballing stops, my computer runs smooth and fast, much faster than with Leopard; and it seems the beachballing and the errors don't happen again until the next restart (though I haven't yet used it for a long period of time since this problem happened like three days ago). Another thing is that I recently transfered like 30GBs worth of files and I didn't receive a single error. Everything seems (as for now) to run perfectly well after the initial beachballing occurs.
So, I'm now facing two options: (1) Make a clean install and see if the problem persists, or (2) Replace the hard disk.
As all of you know, both options are pretty time consuming and annoying, so I really want to troubleshoot everything I can to see if the problem has a simpler solution. What other things can I check? Have any of you had this problem before?
Sorry to make my post so long but I believe the more information you get first hand the better, right? Please, I will really appreciate any advice.

OK. Here's what I found out.
When I boot in Safe Mode the problem does not occur (and I discovered why, I'll explain further along). Also, Disk Utility didn't report any errors in either the "Macintosh HD" volume nor the "WINDOWS" volume.
Looking closer at the console errors I noticed a couple of things. Here are the console errors:
    6/19/11 4:03:02 AM    kernel    disk0s1: I/O error.
    6/19/11 4:03:02 AM    kernel
    6/19/11 4:03:02 AM    kernel
    6/19/11 4:04:09 AM    kernel    disk0s1: I/O error.
    6/19/11 4:04:09 AM    kernel
    6/19/11 4:04:09 AM    kernel
    6/19/11 4:05:17 AM    kernel    disk0s1: I/O error.
    6/19/11 4:05:17 AM    kernel
    6/19/11 4:05:17 AM    kernel
    6/19/11 4:05:17 AM    firmwaresyncd[63]    /sbin/mount exited with 71
    6/19/11 4:05:17 AM    firmwaresyncd[63]    Command /sbin/mount output: mount_msdos: /dev/disk0s1 on /Volumes/firmwaresyncd.QsGgXz: Input/output error
First of all, the error is reported on disk0s1. So I ran diskutil list on Terminal to check which drive was this. These are the drives and partitions that were listed:
    /dev/disk0
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *640.1 GB   disk0
       1:                        EFI                         209.7 MB   disk0s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS Macintosh HD            605.5 GB   disk0s2
3:       Microsoft Basic Data WINDOWS                 34.3 GB    disk0s3
As you can see, disk0s1 is the EFI System Partition (ESP) in my Mac. After a little research I found out that this partition is used as a stage for handling firmware updates. I also found out that this partition is not really needed to run Mac OS X. This explains the subsequent appearance of the firmwaresyncd command which, according to the Apple's developer manuals, runs at boot time to synchronize the firmware files from the root filesystem to the EFI System Partition (ESP). Also, it does not run when the system is performing a Safe Boot.
Now this explains why the problem only happens after I boot and never happens again until I reboot. It also explains why it doesn't happen when I run in Safe Mode.
Therefore, the problem I'm experiencing is basically the following:
At boot time the firmwaresyncd command tries to access the EFI partition to synchronize the firmware files from the root filesystem to the EFI System Partition.
It seems that the EFI partition at disk0s1 is either corrupted or inaccesible so the firmwaresyncd command can't access the partition and after a couple of tries throws the input / output error.
Now the next thing I did was to run Single User Mode and run  fsck_msdos /dev/disk0s1 to see if I could repair this partition. Unfortunately, I got the following error:
    :/ root# fsck_msdos /dev/disk0s1
    ** /dev/disk0s1
    ** Phase 1 - Preparing FAT

So that's what I've found out for now.
What do you think I should do now? Should I try to erase and re-partition the disk to see if it solves the issue? Could these errors suggest the disk is about to fail?
I could technically keep using the Mac like this since the EFI partition isn't strictly needed to run Mac OS X and this problem only happens once at boot time (and I do keep a Time Machine backup). But should I?
    Any thoughts?

  • Problems with Apple ProRes 4444 and alpha channels in Motion 4 after upgrade to Snow Leopard.  Has anyone seen this?

We've just now upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard and are having a problem with Apple ProRes 4444 and alpha channels in Motion 4.  A clip with an alpha which keyed perfectly before the upgrade, now will not key.  If I convert the clip to the Animation codec, it keys perfectly.  If I export the Motion project as a ProRes 4444 self contained movie, it will key when brought into FCP 7 but if I import the project into FCP 7, it will show the key in the viewer but not the canvas.  Has anyone seen this or have any suggestions on how to correct this?  Is it a bug?
    Thanks,

    Motion 4.0.3
It just doesn't seem to recognize the alpha at all.

  • Safari Flash Player crashes after upgrade to snow leopard

I just upgraded my 10.5.8 to a snow leopard 10.6. The main problem is safari flash player crashes each time it gets used. Any ideas much appreciated

You can check here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/  to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.  Version 11.4.402.265 is for Snow Leopard onwards.
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.

  • Lost fonts (maximo and others) after upgrading to snow leopard

Did anyone else notice missing fonts after upgrading and/or updating?  I opened up a file created before the upgrade and I was notified of about 5 missing fonts...not cool.
    Thanks!

    mhh - bad news.
To the background: In Pages there are some templates. I took one of them (2-3 years ago) and redesigned it for my use. I didn't changed any Fonts. Some changes for borders etc - nothing more.
Before I installed the fresh Lion installation it works. On the harddisk was installed 10.2 - 10.7 (with all the upgrades).
My opinion is, that the Font is a part of the templates or a part of OS X 10.x. I have no problem to reinstall the font (all DVD's are working), but where should I start searching for the font ;-)
To buy the font is one way ... the last path.

  • After upgrade to snow leopard, safari and applications are slow

I recently installed snow leopard. Ever since then, my computer has been acting slow. The web pages on safari load ever so slowly, the applications all take time to launch. i have updated the software to the latest downl

    Have you repaired permissions?
Are any of your programs running in Rosetta?
Is your data backed up from before the upgrade?
Are all of your programs and hardware known to be 10.6 compatible?
Are you using any third party utilities to affect system cache?  These can actually slow your system down and should not be used on a non-backed up system.

  • After upgrading to Snow Leopard I can't use software update or firefox, and the internet is slow

I'm getting big problems. After installing Mac OS X Leopard from my usb, I had to since my disk drive stopped working, I had the following problems.  1) Firefox stopped working.  2) Software Update stopped working 3) Chrome runs really slow.  4) Safari stopped working 5) Even on Chrome I can't access any email, including; gmail; hotmail; yahoo; etc...
When software update loads it says checking... but it stays at 10% for at least 1 hr.  I reinstalled SL once and it did something different, suddenly my wifi stopped working, and rapidly fluxtuated.
What the heck is going on?

Yes LS needs a update to work with the changes in 10.6.8, so does Parallels.

  • After upgrading to Snow Leopard on my Mac, Firefox makes typewriter or paper crinkling sounds when going to links and sites

I just upgraded to OS 10.6.8 from 10.5 so I could run iTunes 10.7 (because 10.6 wouldn't work with iPhone 5) and now everytime I go to a any URL, I hear typewriter or paper crinkling sounds. It doesn't do it if I use Safari (I rather not, though) and it doesn't do it using any other applications. I went to the Apple store and none of the "Geniuses" had any idea what's causing it. Any thoughts?

Does the sound seem to be triggered by the navigation to a new page, like the old Internet Explorer "click"?
What Extensions do you have installed? You can copy and paste a list from the following page:
Help > Troubleshooting Information (it's the second table)
The format may look bad when you paste, but regular visitors here should be able to make some sense of it.
