Icons and folders mess (iOS6)

no idea what it was, never saw it happen before, I was moving an icon (the "photos" one to be precise) on my home screen, mistakenly put it over another icon, creating a folder (nothing special so far)... things started to be funny when I attempted to remove it from there: the photo icon could be moved away from that folder while a new folder, with the photos icon inside got created randomly >>> I then had two photos icons on the home screen, one alone, and one in a folder. I could edit/open the folder, but couldn't move the icon in it, then I started to get unusable empty spaces (spaces where nothing could be inserted) on the home screen ... got fed up, did a reset, and everything's back to normal.

issue hasn't been solved with 6.0.1 apparently, this is still happening off and on ... duplicated icons when moving one into a folder, empty spaces on each side of an icon in a folder etc... it always comes back to  normal when playing with the home button or locking/unlocking the screen ... no idea why no one else noticed the problem. Oh yeah this morning an opened folder in edit mode kept closing and re-opening, with empty spaces around a newly moved icon ... got rid of that with the home button.

  • Is it true icons and folders on your desktop get loaded into ram?

I had read on a post that leaving icons and folders on your desktop uses up Ram-memory. Is this true?

The file just takes up space in the Desktop folder on the hard drive unless it's a system element like a drive icon which resides in an invisible system component elsewhere on the hard drive. Applications typically store their custom icons in the application package itself. But regardless of where the icon is physically stored RAM is required to display the icon. So the size of the file represented by the icon is unrelated to the amount of RAM needed to display the icon. Most icons do not take up a lot of display memory. Once an icon is no longer being displayed but will be re-displayed shortly then the icon is cached on the hard drive so it can be reloaded quickly. The OS does this with everything stored in RAM if needed to free up RAM for another use. But this is not an icon thing. It has to do with memory management.

  • IMac display issues: black icons and folders, doubled up files in finder windows, programs won't update

    HELP!
I'm hoping someone can help with my iMac 27" purchased in 2010.  From a previous discussion I started a year ago, I have had virtually nothing but trouble with it.  After the internal hard drive crashing, I was able to install OS X on an external drive and used it for a good 8 months to drive my iMac and I took it to an expert who has replaced it with a 3tb HDD, but at some point the display has gone crazy.  I am not certain if it is hardware, i.e. graphics card or video but I'll describe the symptoms and add some pics to see if anyone has seen this before and knows what the problem may be.
    1.     90% of the screen was covered with white with just a portion of the desktop showing through.
(This happened when I tried to reinstall OS X on the old HDD and the new one, but didn't happen when using OS X install disc)
    2.     Files, folders, photos and some icons on the dock go black
    3.     Files and photos double up when in Finder.  When I'm viewing photos, it shows them but all the previous panes and the photos are jumbled behind the
            photos.
    4.     Anything I open in Preview is completely black, but ColourSync Utility opens everything fine.
    5.     Programs won't update.  They will download onto my iMac but won't update.  Some say, because I don't have OS X 10.6.8 others just won't open.
Including Google Chrome, opens with two tabs open but when I open a third tab the rainbow wheel just turns.  Skype won't open just gives a failure
            report.
    6.     10.6.8 Update Combo downloads but when I restart the screen is covered in white - as in 1. and I have to reinstall OS X 10.6.2 to get the screen to               clear but then all the above problems continue.
    7.     Sometimes videos don't display in Youtube, or the entire page other than the video player is covered in rainbow lines.
    8.     Some buttons are blacked out on selection pages, i.e. system preferences, or saving screens
    9.     Photos opened in FB go upside down and flicker all over the page as my mouse runs over them.
    10.   Photos won't upload into internet editing programs.
I can't find anyone who has had the same issue in all of the discussions I've looked at, but it sounds like I have a video problem, but I wondered if it might be a software problem with flash or something.  Or I have something malicious on my computer.
I also have an iphone 5 that faulted with the iTunes and USB icons and won't fix after trying one of those R-Sims, and I wondered if somewhere along the line it may have even had a virus/trojan/malware that has infected my external drive and then my internal drive.  A reason I have thought that is because I have used my daughter's MacPro laptop and plugged in my external drive and I noticed the windows in hers were starting to do the same thing.
And on top of all that, my fans didn't work for over a year and I had to place an external fan at the back of the computer or it would overheat and shut down, but after resetting the SMU it started working again, but it is very noisy. I have tried to download SMC Fan Control and although it downloads to the HDD, it won't open.
Sorry its such a long post, I do hope with all of this information someone can help me.
    Thanks so much.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
*Soon after, I installed Quake Wars, L4D 1, 2, Mass Effect 2, Need For Speed: Undercover, Mozilla Firefox and *Sophos Enterprise AV*. Approximately a week after installation, I began to experience malfunctions varying greatly*
Macs get grumpy when running anti virus software. Disable or completely uninstall Sophos A/V and see if that makes a difference. A/V software on a Mac will slow the drive down more and more as time goes on.
Also, check the vendor sites for each 3rd party software you installed to make sure they are compatible with 10.6.x
The "hard reboots" are a result of the system freezing due to incompatible or outdated software.

  • Finder changes in managing icons and folders

I don't know if I can explain this very well but here goes. About one month ago, things changed in my Finder window when columns are selected under view. Before if I wanted to click on an icon and then after clicking on it, I could move it around to anywhere I wanted. Now after I click on it, if I try to move it, it opens. If it's a text file, that file opens. If its a folder, that folder opens. After it opens I can move it around or if I don't select it first, I can move it around but I can't move it around after I select it. I went to my other computer which has the exact same software and is also on the column view and that one still works as before. Both computers have system 10.4.11 on them.
Has anyone heard of such a thing or know how I can correct it? It's a nuisance. If I select an icon and want to move it after I have selected it, I have to go select something else first and then put my mouse back on whatever I want to move and quickly move it.
    Thank you,
    Martha

I just finished the test. At first it said that it found a problem and gave me the code: 4MOT/1/40000003.HDD Then it told me to shut down the computer, unplug all peripherals, and run the extended test so I did that. When it completed that test, it said no problems had been found.
    Does this tell you anything?

Drag applications from your main desktop off the right side of the screen and they will appear on the TV.  This is the extended desktop mode.

  • I have two iPads about a year old and have 5 full folders of web links that I would like to copy from one to the other.  Both have iCloud but not the same account.  Is there an easy way to grab those folders or the icons and email?

I have two iPad 2 with separate iCloud accounts.  I want to copy folders of weblinks from one iPad to the other.  Email solution?  Answer needs to be written for a user who doesn't know how to select a folder or a number of icons and email or copy them to something that can be emailed.  I know how to do it one at a time by opening weblink and then emailing the link from safari.

Good idea. I've already used the feedback for my general suggestions to improve the way Apple handles bug reports (and tried sending it to Steve Jobs too), but I'll send a specific suggestion for a bug app on the iPhone.
However, my question is whether there is a simple way to send bug reports from the iPhone now that I have overlooked.

  • Messed up user names and folders

I got my five-month-old G5 back from the repair shop (after four weeks and a wiped hard drive , everything working fine, I reinstalled all my software (Adobe CS2, printer drivers, NeoOffice), installed mail accounts again etc.
But, the "home" folder/my account name had been set by the repair shop to "test" which I tried to change to James; all this did was create another folder on the HD/users folder called James, with its own set of library, documents etc. I have been using that for the last few weeks. Still logged in a Test, I guess, since "James" isn't actually a seperate account, just a folder. But today I decided I didn't want to be known as Test anymore, and had another go at changing it. Mostly because it's easier to access to "home/test" folder from Finder and in application menus, and I didn't like having these two "users".
    Oh dear.
I really don't know what I did wrong, but suddenly I am back to square one. I've been bitten by data loss twice now, so at least all my files are backed up onto an external 250Gb Lacie Disk. But all my bookmarks, mail settings, and software preferences are reset and I can't get them back, or find them in spotlight. I now have Test (with a little house icon) and two folders, James and James O, the name I tried to change Test to just now. The other User Folders are not users as such, I can't log in as them, they are just folders. The bookmarks from the James folder and the Test folder bear no relation to the bookmark structure I laboriously set up in Safari. I can't find any of my settings anywhere, and my restart has just bought up a factory fresh finish...
And the home user is still called Test.
I would phrase this query more succinctly but I am afraid I am at breaking point, losing my machine for four weeks nearly put me out of business and the thought that my settings might so easily be wiped again makes me reluctant to want to spend more time fixing it. And I am very confused as to the difference between "Test" the home folder (whose name I have changed in account settings but springs back to Test when I restart); and the other folders. All of which have various Adobe settings/fonts etc stored away in the libraries, but all of them different.
Which one does the computer use?
And if it's always the home account - in my case Test, why would any setting changes I have made be made in a different folder? And if in renaming Test, I actually casued the old settings to be stored in a folder called James or James O, where are the bookmarks, the application preferences?
I'm hoping there is a mac whizz out there who has some extra-terrerestial powers of understanding of my clumsy explanation here, and who could point me in the right direction; sorry to be less clear. but my brain is just fried. I have spent soooooo many days just fixing/installing/rebooting/fixing this **** machine, it is a far cry from the sweet Mac ads ("when funky designer X wanted to revolutionise the entire music and video business all he used was his shiny new G5....."). If it wasn't so pretty it would be 25 floors down on the Hong Kong sidewalk by now. Actually scrap that, if it wasn't my livelihood and if I had any money to buy a PC, its days would be numbered.
Help please? If not technical then tea and sympathy appreciated.
    Thanks
    James

Ditto!!! I just did the same thing this past weekend. Bought a "new" PB with OS 10.4.4. Ran the PB for a few days setting up internet access info, mail accounts, download prefs, configuring Firefox with bookmarks, plug-ins & exts. Looked at the Sys Prefs Control panel for Accounts and saw the account name was "newuser" but also saw that I could change the name to my own name "macnicol". Change the account name but could not change the "short name". Didn't think much of that at the time. Ran for a while longer without logging out, updating bookmarks and other goodies. Finally a Firefox upgrade required a restart. After restarting it was apparent that my desktop was different than before the restart. When I ran Firefox it was a square 1 with no ext, plug-ins, history or bookmarks. When I clicked the "home" icon it took me to "newuser". When I checked the accounts, only "macnicol" showed as an active account. It appears now that when ever I configure an applic such as Firefox it updates files in the invisible "newuser" account Library files and whenever I restart everything in "macnicol" is back to a new account square one point. How do I combine "newuser" and "macnicol" to get one account with all of the things I have configured so far? Or how do I set up a new "home" account and start over?
    Thanks, macnicol

  • Mac Mini desktop folders/icons and top menu blinking on and off

Hello. I've just returned to my Mac Mini after being away for a few days. Upon booting and having the desktop fully load, I have been experiencing all folders/icons and top menu bar blinking on and off every ten seconds. I have only opened Fire Fox to try and diagnose why this is happening. No solution yet.
I am running Snowleopard with Mavericks and I'm aware Mavericks is a little buggy at the moment (beach ball used to blink on and off every now and again and performance has gotten slow) I only have the HDD replaced last week as the last one failed. I really need to fix this problem soon as I rely on my Mac to work from home.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Jan

I have sovled the problem! for now at least. I came across another users suggestion to dissable "sync status icons" in google drive as it confics with the finder in Mavericks. I guess this would only work with others having this problem with Google Drive and Mavericks.

  • Browsing for file in icon mode does not show all files and folders.

When in Illustrator and I select open, the preview pane does not arrange the files to fit the window size. This does not happen in list mode but in icon mode. I can't see all the files and folders because they are outside of the window and I can't scroll to the right to see them.

    Yosemite, right?
Don't use anything other than list view. It's all buggy.

  • Put iPod Touch icons into folders and organized all my apps. iTunes keeps erasing them.

    Hi Everyone
New iPod touch owner. I arranged my icons into folders for all my apps. But everytime I connect to iTunes it erases all my folders. And moves all my icons around. Anyway to tell iTunes or the iPod to not keep erasing all my folders and not to move all my icons around after I have organized them in the way I want.
       Thanks

    Hello Everyone,
I finally figured it out. Did not know you had to be connected to iTunes and then you can drag icons around, put them into folders, delete any apps you do not want on your iPod Touch and more from within iTunes.
When you done doing what you want, then iTunes syncs your changes to your iPod Touch. And your apps, icons, folders, will all be the same on your iPod Touch as they appear in your iTunes Library.

  • I updated to OS X Mavericks but I now have two Pages and two Numbers icons in my Dock.   Both contain files and folders.  I am not convinced that Mavericks installed correctly, but what should I do?

I updatd my MacBook Pro to OS X Mavericks, but I now have two icons in my dock for Pages and two for Numbers, both of them contain files and folders.   If I click the original Pages icon it says that there is an update available, if I then click to update the Itunes pages says no updates available.   I am not convinced that Mavericks updated correctly.  What can I do please.

There are new versions of the iWork apps, but they have been completely re-written for Mavericks / iOS / iCloud integration. They are feature limited at this time, so Apple left the original versions on your Mac. They are in an iWork folder in the applications folder.
Along with changes to the programs themselves, the file formats are different. Some things like Google and Dropbox think the file formats are viruses and blocks them (I don't know if that is still the case as I don't use either). So, you may want to continue to use the old versions.

  • What is the work around for not being able to see icons for folders.  I want to be able to copy and paste image icons in the GET INFO windows.

I have always used images for my folder icons, and now I am told that Mt. Lion does not allow me to go to the GET INFO window and do a click on the image icon and then be able to paste that image on to other folders.    I just talked with a Apple support guy and he said that Mt. Lion does not support this function.  He did say that there are third party programs that allow using images to make icons for folders or other items.  I can see some image icon in some of my hard drive folders.......  some folders show image icons while others do not. I am a photographer and have scads of photo folders spread all over different hard drives, and I find it easier to find what I am looking for by just looking at the IMAGE PICTURE in the different folders on my hard drives, than by having to read the one or two words associated with each folder.
THe support guy said to request that APPLE put back the ability to use the coy paste function in the GET INFO window.  If i can't get this working like it was I wouyld like to know how to get a refund and throw out Mt Lion.

Restore your Lion bootable backup/clone or Time Machine backup and file your ML bug report. Just keep the installer ($20 USD isn't worth the hassle trying to get it refunded). Then, when the function's restored, reinstall and run Software Update.

  • HT5361 I click on my email icon and the mail menu comes up on the top of the page but I don't see any of my folders/emails on the main screen. I have a macbook air.

I click on the email icon and the mail menu comes up on top of the screen but no emails/folders appear on the rest of the screen?

That depends on what type of email system you use, but you dod not give that information.

  • Ios6 update has done something to you tube icon and now I can't see videos. Flash player required message and a black bar appears when scrolling. Any ideas? I've booked an appointment at the Genius Bar next Saturday but don't want to waste their time

iOS 6 update has done something to the YouTube icon and now I can't see videos when following the new link in the bookmark bar. Flash player required message appears and there is a black bar when scrolling.

YouTube is  not now part of iOS 6. However, you can download the YouTube app at http://itunes.apple.com/app/youtube/id544007664.

  • HT6058 During the installation of the ios 7.0.4 update my screen froze with the iTunes icon and arrow under that and a picture of the usb plug under that.  Thanks for messing up my perfectly well functioning IPad 2 with your lousy update!  What now?

During the ios 7.0.4 update, my IPad 2 froze.  The picture on the screen is an iTunes icon, and arrow inder that and a picture of the apple usb cord.  It will not go away.  I have tried hard and soft turn offs.  Please help!

    Philly:
When there is an iOS update available, iTunes asks if you want to install it. I chose to only download the iOS 7.0.6 update, but not to install it until I had done a backup of everything on my iPad. When that iOS 7.0.6 update failed, I had NO iOS at all, just a bricked iPad.
When my son did a "clean restore" that was the same thing you'd do to wipe an iPad - just install iOS 7.0.6 and install basic iPad apps.  When you turn the iPad on after that, it indicates it wants to be connected to iTunes. At that point, my son yanked the cord so nothing else was installed.  Then, with iOS 7.0.6 already installed, iTunes on my PC didn't say it wanted to update iOS, and allowed me to choose my previous backup to be restored. All was straightforward after that.
Again, there are places on he web where you can download various versions of iOS, along with a PC utility that will do the iOS update. I think these utilities are for when you want to hack your device, so I'm not crazy about this approach.
