Icons Bug in Finder - Displays Random Icons for Random Files

This seems to have occurred after the latest Leopard update. Doing a search through a large folder, containing all my custom icons, for files named 'Documents', 'Dog', etc., the correct list of files comes up, yet the majority of them display a random icon. This random icon doesn't change for the individual files, as they essentially come up as one of 2 or 3 completely wrong, custom icons.
This problem occurs in Coverflow and grid view, yet not in the 'Get Info' screen nor in the listed/column view. I've restarted twice and on both occasions the wrong icons shared have changed.

Forgive me for not explaining it well enough. The icons presented are incorrect (hence the randomness). They are not previews with white borders but rather a file that has come up early on in the search (one of the first few found) that has been applied randomly to the following results of that search. For example, a search for 'dog' will come up with, say, 40 icons. The first 10 or so will be displayed accurately, only for the following 30 to be displayed with any one of the 10 previous icons.

Dreamweaver CC and Windows 8.1 - Can't Find A Valid Editor For This File Extension

Was running the latest version with no issues and then I loaded Office 2013 .. Now when I am in the remote site and try to double click on a .cfm file, I get a dialog box..Can't Find A Valid Editor For This File Extension..
I tried the support chat and they said Dreamweaver support was not available, try again later???
So I thought I would reinstall the CC version and now I can see the Dreamweaver icon next to the files but still ... can't open the file..
Any assistance would be appreciated?

The issue is only in Windows 8.x where when Dreamweaver CC is installed, it is not able to turn on the file type associations by default. The workaround for now is to manually add the extensions both within Windows and then within Dreamweaver CC itself.
Go to Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Set Your Default Programs and select Dreamweaver CC and then select 'Choose defaults for this program' and Select All or the extensions you want to open in Dreamweaver CC
Start Dreamweaver CC and go to Edit > Preferences > File Types/Editors and add '.cfm .cfc' to the extensions and then add C:\Program Files (x86)\Dreamweaver CC\Dreamweaver.exe then click on Apply and Close
That should be it.

DW CC: Can't find a valid editor for this file extension

Hi,
I am using dreamweaver cc for 1 month now. I have been having difficulty opening .asp file.
In the File panel, when i click on one of the asp files, the error message is 'Can't find a valid editor for this file extension'.
To solve this problem, I will right click on the file and choose Open with > Dreamweaver.
However, this is very inconvenient. Someone pls help!

You can configure that in your Operating System. In my version of Windows XP, open any folder and select TOOLS/FOLDER OPTIONS/FILE TYPES then scroll to the asp file type and select DW as the editor.

Support for ColdFusion and other databases were removed from DWCC. You can add them back with the Legacy Extension, or adding a paid extension from DMX Zone...

When I drag and drop an icon from the address bar to the desktop is does creat the shortcut but will not display the website icon, only the firefox icon, how can I display website icons?

When I drag and drop a website icon from the Forefox address bar to the desk top, the short cut is created but the icon that appears is the firefox Icon. I want to disply the icon from the website that the short cut refers to. I have checked all I can think of in my computer to no avail.

You have to assign the favicon yourself to the desktop shortcut (right-click the shortcut: Properties) after you have dragged the link to the desktop.
You can usually find the favicon in Tools >Page Info > Media and save the icon there.
Otherwise use the main domain of the website and add favicon.ico (e.g. mozilla.com/favicon.ico ) to display the favicon in a tab and save that image to a folder.

Icon Preview in Finder Replace Application Icons, Which Apps Will Now Open?

If you're a graphic designer like myself who uses multiple image programs it was extremely easy to see which app was used for each file... A Photoshop document displayed the Photoshop icon, a Preview document displayed the Preview icon etc. etc.
... But now alI I see are tiny previews of every document, which may be great for certain circumstances, but now I have the problem of Select All and Open... but various apps open all at once if they related to multiple apps. If I knew which documents were opened by what it would help me to determine whether a quick snap at Command-A along with Command-O would suit me. Currently it now doesn't as I don't wish for perhaps more than one app to open, AND dragging to the dock and hovering to open an app is a pain, too.
So, any suggestions?

I bet you're talking about column view. If you are, open a window in column view, select Show View Options (Command-J), and uncheck the box for icon preview.
There are different view options depending on whether you're in icon view, column view, list view, etc. Icon Preview is great in icon view, but not so useful in the other views.

In "Finder" Display in Outline Form - Folders/Files Info & Details

FINDER is hard to use to save, edit, move files to folders on the HD.
Would like in "FINDER" an "OUTLINE FORM" to view Folders (First) & then Files (able to expand folders to see files) on HD (similar to MS-XP's Explorer Data's display of data).
It is way too time consuming to try to find\see many years of folders\files in yearly folders!
Need an easier way to see folders and files on HD and to easily copy\move files between folders?
Default view should have a column wide enough to show full name and details of all files in list. I am wasting time making columns wider to see full names, sizes, dates, & info. and change views to find\see files, etc.
Very difficult to move files or or between folders on HD.
There has to be a better way?

I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with the Finder on your MacBook Pro. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact use-case or work flow you are describing. From what I gather you are looking for (outline view, maximum data displayed about individual files, etc), it sounds like the best Finder view would be List view with a wide window size, which should show an outline/tiered file view of folder contents, as well as individual file data (dates, sizes, kind, etc):

My icons are big and display too big for screen. help..

my icons are all big on desktop but not on dock. safari screen doesn't fit on my display, too big. what have i done?

Possibly zoomed the screen. Hold CNTL and scroll down with the mouse or trackpad.

Smart Folder in Finder displays incorrect list when using "File label" option.

Hello.
I created a Smart Folder in Finder, to display all files that have any color (label).
But have a problem just with one file, and although it has no Label, it keeps displaying that file.
Just to let you know:
1) File is not in Trash or hidden.
2) Checked several times the "information" of the file. Assign any color, then removed it.
3) File is synched with Dropbox v2.0.5
4) File is a Microsoft Excel and been working with it for a while with Office for Mac.

I'm having this problem, too. It with even show files with other color tags when filtering by another color. I tried changing the file color then changing it back to blank and it disappears temporarily, but if you view another folder and then come back the file pops back.

"ls" not working and Finder displaying only partial list of files

On a PowerMac G5 2.5GHz with 10.3.9 client installed, I've come across a problem where, when trying to list the files in ~/Library/Fonts (i.e., the user's fonts folder, not the system-wide font folder) using the Unix "ls" command, it merely hangs for a short while (around 10 seconds) and then returns to the prompt without listing any files whatsoever. And using the Finder to do the same thing in the same folder only shows a partial list of the font files (no font files listed beyond those beginning with the letter "F"). This only occurs when trying to display the contents of the above directory--there is no problem listing the contents of any other directory using either "ls" in Terminal or the Finder, not even the /Library/Fonts directory. I am logged into that user's account as that user (he's a standard user) and not the admin user. This is a standard installation and there are no third-party installations (i.e., /usr/local doesn't exist; nor /opt). I have already deleted .DS_Store in ~/Library/Fonts and have rebooted the machine afterwards to no avail. Any ideas would be appreciated.

The code is now very expensive! but thats the result of avoiding the cd command. Right? Is there a max length for the ls and other commands? a limit of 128KB?

The while loop runs in a sub-shell, so when the while loop finishes, the filesArr disappears along with the sub-shell.
The < space <(...) notation in bash allows the while loop to run in the current shell, so filesArr will be visible after the loop finishes.

The <<<word is a form of the "HERE DOCUMENTS". According to "man bash", the 'word' is expanded and supplied to the command on its standard input.
I have not played with <<<word with respect to spaces in file paths. If this works, then it would be similar to the < space <(...) for this example. But I did test < space <(...) to make sure spaces were preserved. You get to test <<<word for proper space handling.

Because 2>&1 comes from when I first learn shell scripting back in '85, so I'm more comfortable with it.

How to find the process responsible for deleting files

We have a process which stores a file in a particular location say /tmp/mydir/. The files getting stored in this directory are getting deleted. Is there any way to find which process is responsible for deleting the file. Is there any way we can truss on the directory/file and check which process accessed it or deleted it.

I think all you're missing is adding some information to the trace output.
Is getting unlink enough to find "what is removing files?"You might want to check rename as well.
How do I drrace for "anything that touched taht file" or, "anything that touches files in a directory"That's actually a somewhat difficult task for dtrace. First, you might download the "Dtrace toolkit". One of the tools in there is "opensnoop". It reports on file opens and you can examine the script to see how it does it. You can even give a filename and it only reports when that filename is accessed.
But the main problem is that files can have many names, and dtrace is just looking at the name in many cases. So "/etc/passwd" can be called "/etc/passwd", or if you're in /usr it could be called "../etc/passwd", or any of a variety of names. It's not too hard to set a probe predicate to fire only on a pattern match, so you could set it to only fire when the filename is matched.
Good luck, and see if any of the existing tools in the toolkit are close enough that you can use them directly or modify them slightly.

How do I display the tags on the headers of MP3 files, pocasts? These sometimes have information or brief description of the contents,
I can see a short snippet under the title at the top center of the screen while playing the file, but not much else.

For podcasts-if the producer properly formats it, show notes are viewable like lyrics for song(tap screen during playback).
For songs- or podcasts not formated-no way to do it.

HT1222 When I try to install iTunes 10.7 it says it can't find the iTune64.msi file. I can't seem to find a replacement download for that file.

I have ITunes installed on my PC which runs Windows Vista in support of my IPad. When I try to install the update for ITunes 10.7 version, it says it can't find the "itunes64.msi" file. How do I correct this, or where can I find a download for the itunes64.msi file?

(1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):

How can I change my Bookmarks Sidebar to transparent - can't find the proper code for CSS file
