Icons change desktop

i cannot change icons for applications since OSX 10.9.1

Thanks for the feedback. Apparently, Apple broke another useful feature. All I can suggest is to CONTROL-click on the app, select Show Package Contents, and then replace the iMovie.icns file with the one you want to use. Save a copy of the original so you can restore back to the present state. Might require adding admin w/R&W privileges or using the Terminal app with sudo before you can do that.

please help i need to fix my itunes it will not launch on my computer . no error message appears it simply will not run. the icon on desktop has changed to a white folder and it still appears in programmes in start menu but will not open. it appears in task manager but disappears when the programme will not open

You music etc should not be affected by problems with the iTunes program, nevertheless it is always a good idea to backup your data.
You haven't said if there was any error message when you tried to start iTunes. If  there was one please give it in full.
Also check to see if QuickTime works, iTunes can not work without it. If QuickTime doesn't work, it has to be fixed before worrying about iTunes.
Then restart your PC and open your Task manger and select the Processes tab.
Try to start iTunes, does iTunes.exe appear on the processes tab? If so does it disappear again or remain although the programs does not open?

  • Icons change from desktop to HD

    Hello everyone.
I just got started in 10.6 and I notice that icons of documents such as PDFs and TextEdit documents look different on the desktop but change to their familiar look when moved to the hard drive. Is this normal on Snow Leopard or is something not right with my system?
    Thanks for any comments.
    Rich

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I investigated the situation and decided that leaving the icon preview mode on would be an asset without hurting anything. It was just strange to see the icons change when transferred from the desktop to the Home HD.
    Thanks again.

  • Desktop icons change size when I move the cursor

Intermittently, when I move the cursor with my trackpad, the desktop icons change size—minimize going from 44 to 16 icon size. This happens with the Finder in the foreground or background.
I think there's a fix, but I cannot find it.
    All help appreciated,
    Bill

Press Command-Option-8. Someone apparently turned on Zoom. (See System Preferences > Universal Access and click the Options button next to Zoom for more information.)

  • Desktop Icons Change Positions After Restart

    Hi,
After I inadvertently synced my computer with another Mac computer my icons change position after restart. I was trying to sync another computer to mine.
I have tried the usual suggestions of taking out com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.desktop.plist and letting the system create these new files but the problem still persists. I also checked the Finder > View > Show View Options and arrange by none is still selected.
Does anyone have a suggestion how I can fix this problem? Will I have to go back in time with Time Machine and restore my entire system to solve this?
I can't operate with the desktop icons changing positions like this.
    Thanks,
    Pacecom

Delete the hidden .DS_Store file associated with your Desktop folder. Launch the Terminal.app (in /Applications/Utilities/), copy & paste the following command into the window that pops up, hit the return key, quit the Terminal.app, OPTION-click and hold the Dock's Finder icon, and select Relaunch:
    *rm ~/Desktop/".DS_Store"*
Now, set the Desktop as desired, log out and back in, and the Desktop should be as it was as you last set it.

  • Desktop icons change during startup

When I start my MBP, I've noticed some of the icons on the desktop (say a spreadsheet) have a nice looking, easily recognizable image, but as the menu bar loads, some of the icons change, to a something different and usually lose their color, going to back and white.
    Any ideas what's going on?
    Regards,
    Jp

    HI James,
Not certain what could cause that but try booting from your install disk and run Disk Utility.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
And run the Apple Hardware Test also. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2684

  • When I drag a bookmark to my desktop, the icon changes to that of Firefox - unlike Internet Explorer, where the icon is not changed.

I am running Windows7 ultimate. When I drag a bookmark either from the url box or from the bookmark list, the icon changes to the Firefox icon. However, when I do the same thing from Microsoft Internet Explorer, the bookmark is not altered. How can I get the same results in Firefox?

I'm confused. Are you trying to play the album FROM your desktop?

  • "Change desktop background" instantly hides when opened

I have a rather strange issue that's a nuisance. When I right click on the desktop and select "Change Desktop Background," the system preferences pane opens, but automatically is hidden (similar to if you press cmd+H). I have to click the icon to restore the window.
This does NOT occur if I first open System Preferences and then select "Desktop & Screen Saver," or if I open "DesktopScreenEffectsPref.prefpane" from quicksilver.
I have tried deleting com.apple.desktop.plist and restarting, but this did not solve my problem. I think I may have experienced this problem in Lion as well, but I currently experience it on Mountain Lion.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

This same thing happens to me, and while not the end of the world, it is defintely annoying.  Have you figured it out?  Thanks!

  • Issue with desktop Opt/Click (right click) & 'Change Desktop Background'

I have an issue with the opt/click in the desktop in ML 10.8.2. The 'Change Desktop Background' using opt/click (right click) works after reboot, but fails to open (work correctly) thereafter. The 'System Preferences' icon bounces in the dock but nothing else happens, I have either click on the SP icon or re-opt/click (R click) again to get it working. All else seems to be in order but not this. I have tried this with 2 complete full installs & still doesn't work correctly (same issue. I have reported it to Apple, but I was wondering if anyone else experiencing this problem?

So, here's what I've learned so far.
Fresh reboot.  Works fine.  Close and try again, doesn't work.  This you already know.
Here's what I tried to see if it makes a difference:
    I removed:
    ~/Library/Caches
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.*, com.apple.systempreferences.* and com.apple.desktop.*
    That didn't help.
I tried it in safe mode.  Same issue.
Here's something interesting I noticed.  If you open terminal and killall Finder, that refreshes it and makes it work again... for 1 try.
This does, in fact, seem like a bug.
For reference, I'm currently on a mid 2012 macbook pro.  Running fully updated on mt lion.

  • Changing desktop background issue12

hi, I have an issue with my macbook pro retina display 13" running mountaion lion os.
I was trying to change my desktop background, so I right-clicked my mouse and choose 'change desktop background option'. The first time I did this, nothing happened (however i noticed that the 'system preferences' icon on my dock was bouncing after I did that). When I tried to do the same thing again, it worked.  I did this several times and I noticed it will only work on the second time. fyi I was not having this issue till today. Anyone else facing the same issue? Do I need to format my laptop or re-install my ios to remove this bug?
sorry for my bad English. Thanks!

    hi! thanks for the reply.
I tried to follow the instructions, but I don't understand with the last instruction which says "Restart the computer and open System Preferences (or problem program) and reset all your preferences again"
I went to restart my computer (after deleting the com.apple.system...), and it doesnt solve the issue. However, I noticed that deleting the com.apple.system the "change desktop background" will work once. but if i close and do it the again, it wont work (same thing if i restart my laptop). I know i am just being anal about this small issue lol, but i noticed some other users experience the same thing as well as me.

I've been through much the same sort of pain as you describe - I tried using shortcuts on the users' desktop for them to access SharePoint via WebDAV but these fail to connect regularly unless the user has logged on through the browser. I followed all of
the instructions in KB 2616712 without resolving the problem. I raised a Service Request and the answer I received was:
    =====================
    • Issue Description:
    • Problems accessing mapped SharePoint folders via WebDAV
    • Issue Resolution:
    • This is a By-design behavior since SharePoint online in office 365 uses forms based authentication & the user is authenticated using SAML token as against BPOS where windows authentication method was used.
    • This SAML token expires every 2 hours & after that the mapped drive for SharePoint library cant access the resources unless the user signs in to the site again from the browser.
    • At this point we don't have a possible solution to this however this issue is in the knowledge of our Operations team & they are working towards a solution. We don't have ETA for the same though.
    • You can develop a custom application that would authenticate the user against sharepoint site without having him to open the browser & sign in. The following article may be of help in doing so.

  • Can't Find Change Desktop Background in System Preferences... and other ???

I can't remember the last time I changed my desktop background, but it's been on the default plain blue. I tried to change it recently, and I cannot find the option to change background pictures in the System Preferences. I tried right-clicking on the desktop and used the context menu. That launched system preferences, kind of... the program opened, but the viewer did not... the actual window with all the options. I don't think my computer can find it either! I read a few discussions on this topic, and found to delete the plist from preferences folder.. tried that to no avail. Please help.

    Hi again agapean,
Sorry to take so long to post back for you.
I found a screenshot of the System Preferences for 10.2 Jaguar and I see that you have two separate preference panes for Desktop and Screen Effects. In my Panther, the two were combined as one pane known as Desktop and Screensavers.
In the row below the toolbar of your System Preferences (It should be called Personal for that bar of preference "panes") there should be an icon for "Desktop".
    See: Jaguar System Preferences
Is that not what you are seeing when you open System Prefences? If the Desktop pane is missing then it sounds as if it has somehow become deleted or corrupted.
I use Application Enhancer, windowshade, uControl, and Lite switch. They are all properly registered, but the icons are weird at the bottom... almost squished together? And the International icon shows up 3 times in System Preferences, once in Personal and twice in Other, where the other programs are located as well.
Third party hacks such as those can wreak havoc on the OS and things can become corrupted and cause a variety of system problems. It may very well be that that is what is causing the anomalies with your Desktop pictures/preferences.
Personally, I would uninstall them, if possible, and Repair Permissions from Disk Utility and try applying the 10.2.8 Combo update from Apple's downloads.
Back when I was using 10.2.8 I remember many problems users were having with system hacks like those back then. Perhaps others here may have a simpler approach to straightening out your situation.

  • Time machine icon does not rotate and back up icon on desktop does not show during backup session.

Time machine icon does not rotate and back up icon on desktop does not show during backup session since I installed Maverick.  Why? How do I fix it?

That's the new look of it. No way to change it other than file a complaint with Apple. If ENOUGH people do thst they may "fix it".

  • Icons change after startup

After starting up the icons on my desktop, for example a Acrobat Professional .pdf, just looks great but then changes just before finishing startup into a 'normal' icon with just some text as icon.
Does anyone know how icons can be viewed as defined by the program (such as Adobe)?

Sorry, didn't mean to confuse you.
After the login window, the mac starts up and then shows the desktop. The .pdf, docx and xlsx icons on this desktop (so I saved them there once) are first shown as application icons (kind of nice icon with colors). Then during the startup of the Login Items (in my case Mail, iCal and Activity Monitor) the icons change to a regular graphic design which looks like ugly text-icons.
(I think that on the startup of the Login Items the mac is not finished its regular startup so I don't know if these login items have something to do with it. Guess not.)
