Icons defaulting. How do I get them to stay?

I change file icons by the usual method, and they stay for as day or so and then default to the generic (in this case AppleWorks) icon. Am I doing something wrong? This seems to happen with spreadsheets rather than single documents.

When you resave a document it goes back to the default icon.
Best method to use is CandyBar:

This will allow you to set the generic icon to somethng different and have it stick. However, if you want unique icons for individual files it will still revert back to the new default when you resave a dacument.

In that case, there may be a problem with your Finder preferences or window settings.
Try removing these files, then restarting:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    ~/Desktop/.DS_Store
Let me know if you're not sure how to do that.

The old iTunes libraries do not restore any playlists or song counts.
They should you if you do the roll back properly... Opening files from the Previous iTunes Libraries folder in Windows Explorer simply opens the current library. If you don't see the .itl file extension then don't give your copied and renamed file the extention or iTunes will create an empty library rather than using the renamed file.
If you had a complete pre-problem backup of your library you could restore that. On the assumption that isn't possible I have a script called ExportImport that could in principle be adjusted to save the relevant data from a backup of the library database and then reimport that data into the current library. See this thread for details.

  • I lost my safari and mail icons.  How can I get them back in the screen?

I lost my safari and mail icons on the ipad screen.  How can I get them back or where can I find them?

Have you checked all your homescreens and app folders for them, and do they show on the iPad's spotlight search screen (swipe your first homescreen to the right and type in Safari or Mail) ?
Safari can be hidden via Settings > General > Restrictions > Safari being 'off', so you could check that as well.
If you still can't find then try a reset and see if you can find them after the iPad has restarted : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot
There is also Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout which will reset the layout of your apps and might make it easier to find them.

  • When sorting a column of alphanumerical, how do I get them to stay sorted?  When I go to the next column, the first column mixes up.

How do I get a column of alphanumerical to stay sorted?  When I go to the next column, my first column gets mixed up.

For my purpose, I'll have to go back to Excel.
What is your purpose?  Note that Numbers 3.0 does not have a multicolumn sort interface the way you have in Excel (or Numbers 2.3). But it is generally easy to accomplish what you need to do.
Say you have a column A on which you want an alphanumerical sort and within that you want to sort by B (the equivalent of Excel's "Sort by" A "Then by" B).
First do a single column sort by B. Then do a single column sort by A.

  • My reminders and notes keep disappearing - where do they go and how can I get them to stay forever?

Hi - I'm having challenges with the Notes and Reminders apps.  Data in both disappear - i.e. in Reminders I have the titles of the Reminder list but all the items in the list are no longer there.  Notes just flat out go into the ether.  This started upon downloading IOS 7.  Reminders did not seem to be affected until just today when I rebooted my phone and all 5-7 of my Reminder lists are now titled but blank.  What gives?

I just had the scare of the year with my Notes app also. I have been adding to one or two pages in the Notes app on my iPad Mini for over a year, and today when I went to look something up on one of them, ALL my notes were gone!! It was as if I was using the app for the very first time!! I nearly fainted!!
Mid panic attack, I brailled around Google and found this link. I didn't really know what to make of it other than that somehow there might be hope--my Notes might actually still exist SOMEWHERE:
    http://gmail-miscellany.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/gmail-apple-notes-app.html
After reading that, I went into Settings in the Mini. I didn't think my Notes had ever been asscociated with Gmail BUT I had occasionally emailed a Note via my AOL account on the Mini, so I looked in "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" and under AOL I saw that Notes had been togggled off. It must not have been like that before or I prpbably wouldn't have been able to email out a Note as I had done preveiously, so I toggled it on.
Lo and behold--ALL MY NOTES REAPPEARED in Notes!! Whew!!!
I notice that Settings>Notes>Default Account now says AOL, not My iPad  like it did when my Notes were missing, so I assume AOL was how it was set originally.

  • The App tabs that I set get erased when I close the browser. How do I get them to stay?

I have set app tabs during a browsing session. The tabs stay in place as I go from site to site. When I close the browser and then re-open it the app tabs are erased and I have to start over again. I have been working around the problem by bookmarking the sites I use often, but that is an inconvenience. Would appreciate any suggestions.

App tabs and Tab Groups (Panorama) are stored as part of the session data in the file sessionstore.js in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder]

Make sure that you do not use [[Clear Recent History]] to clear the "Browsing History" if Firefox is closed.

Double click on the picture of the HD on your desktop, then look at the bottom of the window that opens.
First check the S.M.A.R.T. status on your HD: Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > in the panel at left, select the first item in the list/your HD mechanism > look atthe bottom of the main window next to S.M.A.R.T. status and see if it says “Verified” or something more ominous like “Failing.”
If S.M.A.R.T.status is "Verified," run Repair Disk: Boot from install disc (insert disc > restart > immediately hold down c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”) > at first screen select the language and click Continue > click on the Utilities Menu in the menu bar > open Disk Utility > select your HD in the panel on the left side > click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself). When this is finished, quit Disk Utility, quit the installer, and restart. Once booted normally, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions.

  • I have lost the icons for Word, Excel, etc. from the bottom of my screen - how do I get them back?

I have lost the icons for Word, Excel, iTunes, etc. from the bottom of my desktop - how do I get them back?

Easy-these are just aliases. Do a cloverleaf+F/command+F (Find) and they should appear. Either create an alias and drag it to the dock-or there's an "add to Dock" command in the Finder. so click on whichever app you'd like to add to the Dock,  then add to Dock and it should appear there. If something isn't in the Dock that doesn't mean it's gone for good. It's just an alias
    well, hope that helped

all my icons are enlarged, how do you get them back to the regular size so you can see them all and you have the slide bar to get into it?

This is asked and answered often.  The forum search bar is on the right side of this page.
It is also covered in the manual - zoom feature.

  • I no longer have the e-mail icons with my e-mail so that I may reply, forward, etc.  How do I get them back?

I no longer have my e-mail symbols for replying, forwarding, etc.  How do I get them back?

    Try terminating and restarting Mail:
    1. Press the Home button
    2. Double click the Home button to bring up the "Recent Apps" tray.
    3. Touch and hold on the Mail icon in the "Recent Apps" tray until a "-" appears.
    4. Touch the "-" to terminate Mail.
    5. Mail Safari and see if this corrects the problem.
If this doesn't try restarting or resetting your iPhone:
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after the iPhone shuts down, then press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).
