Icons disappear in Download stack fan

When I fan out my downloads stack, the icons and file names do not appear. They appear in grid, but not fan. I have repaired permissions, restarted computer, but nothing works. How do I fix it?

This happened to my father who just got a new iMac after seeing how great my MBP was. Thanks for the hint with p-ram... (Does anyone know what that is?) It worked but it happened for a second time (Also happened with other stacks I had made for iWorks and MS Office). My dad got frustrated with it also the mouse stopped working and was stuck on the screen. (a simple unplug and plug back in worked fine) Needless to say he wasn't very impressed with Apple. Can anyone enlighten us to this issue?
On a plus side he likes taking some photos and is very impressed with the screen!!

  • The Icon of the Downloads Stack @ Dock changes when I put anything inside.

I have a problem, on my new iMac, I'm a happy new user of Mac =)
By my mistake I throw to the trash the Download shortcut of the Dock (the default icon of the famous Stacks).
I went to the Finder to my home folder and took the Download folder and put it again on the Dock, and everything was ok with the icon with the arrow.
The problem is that from now when I put a file or anything inside the Download folder, the icon of de Dock changes to the icon of the file that I've put inside.
This only happens on the icon on the Dock of the Download foder, the icons of the Applications and Documents on the Dock doesn´t change when you put anything inside.
    Any solution?
    Thank you.

control-click on Downloads in the dock and choose display as-> folder.

  • IPhone 4S - Homescreen icons disappearing after downloading apps?

I have recently downloaded the Opera web browser on my 4S and as soon as I exited the app other icons on my homescreen disappeared from view, leaving an empty space where the icon should be, but the name of the app still visible. When i swipe between homescreens/ to spotlight the images of the apps seem to come back and then a different one disappears.
I have cleared all the apps that were running in the multitasking bar but this hasn't sorted the problem.
I had a problem last week where the phone would not end a call (I had to completely turn the phone off in order to stop the call) I used the factory reset within iTunes to sort this problem out by downloading a new version of iOS 5 (the same version number just a fresh install from apple) and the problem was sorted but it left .64GB of "Other" data on my iphone which I cannot remove. I dont know if this will be something to do with my new problem (I have never had anything above .20GB of "Other" data on my phone before this). iTunes also told me that prior to the reset my phone was over capacitity by .5GB (how is this even possible?).
Since then my phone has also not managed the storage data on the phone correctly as I downloaded some of the 12 Days Of Christmas free content, with my iPhone claiming I have 2GB of available space out of 16GB (using the data presented in the Settings>General>About screen) to download content (2 HD tv programs, which came to 2.5 GB, so before downloading I removed some older music videos to clear extra space, at least enough to clear out the .5GB required) but yet when I synched my phone with iTunes earlier today (after discovering the homescreen problem) iTunes told me that my iPhone was 1.4GB over its storage capactity. I have cleared enough content to allow 3GB of free space on the iPhone according to iTunes but my iPhone only claims that 2.5GB is free, and the Homescreen problem persists.
Normally I wouldnt trouble you guys with my problem and just restore the phone with a fresh OS but I dont actually have a proper internet connection at my house and so i cannot download the operating system as required (I have to use tethering to type this on my mac) I have read that you can restore from a fresh backup that is stored on your Mac after you download the iOS 5 file, but the file is not located within the backups folder in the Mobilesync folder in user libraries. Apparently in the folder other backups should be present with a dating system (i read on forums about this, havent seen it for myself) but all that is located within the backups folder is 2 folders named with a jumble of letters and numbers both containing a load of files with the same random jumble of characters. iTunes will not recognise these as a backup.
Sorry about the long story but I'm new to having a Mac and wanted to put in as much detail as possible (im not used to lion yet).
My question is Should i be able to access backups/ a fresh install of my iPhone locally as I do back it up using iTunes and not iCloud, and if so, where will this file be located in order for me to do so? Also, what is this "Other" data on my iPhone?
    Thank you
    John

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • I downloaded IOS6 and all my apps, including the App Store icon, disappeared. If I go to the Passport icon, there is an App Store button, but I have to search through all the apps to find the one I want  and then click on "Open" to use it.  Help!

I downloaded IOS6 and all of my app icons, including the App Store icon disappeared. Now to use an icon, I have to go to Passport and click on the App Store button at the bottom and search through all of the apps to find the one I want and then click on Open. There doesn't seem to be a way to delete the app and start over.

    Hey PlayerPS,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like the application you are looking for is indeed still on your iPhone. You can confirm this by searching in the Spotlight Search for this application. It may have accidentally been moved to a folder, or an additional Home screen:

You can try this step :

    Windows: [System drive]:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Adobe\OOBE

What troubleshooting steps have you taken? Have you checked Settings>General>Restrictions? Have you done a Spotlight search for it? Have you tried resetting your device by pressing and holding the Home button and power button until the silver apple appears?

  • Stacks' fan-view not showing filenames?

This has been going on since I first got Leopard:
I have my Downloads-stack/folder set to the fan-view (no particular reason, it jsut looks spiffy), but sooner or later the filenames stop showing up. First it's only some of them, but before long it's all of them.
It's obviously got something to do with the contents of the Downloads folder changing, but I can't really see a pattern.
I've attached a snap of the weirdness in question. I figured it was a common bug, but I haven't been able to find it mentioned anywhere.
Any ideas, besides doing a "sudo killall Dock" or a logout every once in a while?
The system's up to date except for the most recent Sec. Update (the one with the SSH issues), but this has been going on since I got the new Mac Pro with (I believe) 10.5.1 pre-installed.

Not sure you're getting the picture (literally - look at the screenshot again).
This is not about how I label my files/folders or the settings for the stack. This is about a bug causing the filenames to not appear, not be displayed, not be visible next to their respective icons... as the screenshot above shows. It illustrates as directly as possible that all the filenames are missing.
And yes, I can change the stack to display as a grid (as I did for the Documents stack) or as a list, or change its icon to be a stack or whatever. But I like to keep my Downloads stack in the fan view, and when I do that, the filenames are not displayed. I don't know why, but it's fairly irritating.
If anybody's got a workaround, let me know.

  • I accidentally deleted the download stack, but managed to get it back. How can I change back to stack view?

I accidentally deleted the download stack, but managed to get it back. How can I change back to stack view?

Right-click on the folder icon on the dock where you put it. Change it from 'Display As: Folder' to 'Display As: Stack'.
After that you'll be all set.

My email crashed and my ICloud icon disappeared by my system and reverted to mobile me which of course is no longer available. Any ideas on what to do?

You'll actually need to order a snow leopard DVD first.  Then you can download mountain lion via the app store.  Confirm you meet the requirements:  http://www.apple.com/osx/specs
If you dont, you might be able to get lion instead.  That's an order over the phone, to get a redemption code.
And make sure you're actually contacting apple:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
You'll also want to confirm your 3rd party apps are compatible before an OS upgrade.  Of course, you'll also want to backup your data.

  • What can I do to get Downloads Stacks back?

I searched Stars & Stripes archives that downloaded every paper I searched, computer started running VERY slow, so I moved the downloads to trash & "emptied".  Somehow, the "download" file or folder itself got into the trash... now I don't have my download stacks, just a file icon with a "?" symbol... so I removed that from dock as it just isn't there anymore.  Would like to get my download stack back???  I have a stock 13" pro that I got in Sept., it says "early 2011", Lion 10.7.2  Not real happy with my abilities on this puppy, it replaces an old tiger desktop, but I don't seem to have much luck with the finger pad thingy and it seems to do a lot of stuff I'm not wanting it to do, or realizing is being done... New 'puter doesn't come with any reinstall disks like old one did, so have I lost permanently my "Downloads" file/folder/stack... or is there some way I can get that back?  Thanks

Do you have a picture of a disc drive (metal box looking item that may say Macintosh HD) on your desktop in the upper right corner?
If so, double click it and you should get a screen similar to mine as posted below.
Double click on the Users folder (the one with the silouhette on it).
You should now see something similar to this screen (the house should be back!)
Double click on the house and look for the Downloads folder (circle with the arrow and Mac on it).
Let me know if you have made it this far.
Note: To make a screenshot you should use the Apple tools. Press Shift-Command-3 and then look for a file named Screenshot (date) at (time). Use the Apple Camera button and choose the first option. It will ask you where the file is on your computer. Select it and it should upload without the ?

  • Dashboard question and my app store icon disappeared...

I was looking at the dashboard widgets to download and I found a game to download. Once I downloaded it and opened up my dashboard, all I see is the game. All my other icons are behind the game and I can't see them. I don't know how to make the game screen smaller like the other icons or even delete it.
I am very new to owning my first Mac, so I put in the Mac OS Install DVD and after it finished downloading, my app store icon disappeared. There is a question mark in the place that was my app store icon. How do I fix that?
    Thanks!

Did you reinstall the software from the dvd? It sound like you are now running an os that is under 10.6.6.
Click on the apple icon in the menu bar and select "about this mac"
That will show you the os version you are running now. You need to have 10.6.6 and above to have the app store installed.
In this case all you have to do is run a software update and download the lattest os update which should be 10.6.8.

  • Icons disappear in Cover Flow when window resized...

I created a custom folder icon for my Pixelmator projects, applied it to the folder, and all looked to be perfect. However, I later discovered that when I resized the Finder window and the icon grows larger in Coverflow, my icon disappears! This seems to be the case for all of the icons I created. Is there something I'm missing? Did I do something wrong with the creation? Or is the template I'm using not working the way it's supposed to? I can post pictures or a screencast of my issue if it'd help...
I got the template from the first post in http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=392360
_To give you a brief idea of my creation process:_
    1. Edited template in Pixelmator (added picture on top of folder).
    2. Exported file as PNG
    3. Using IconComposer, dragged in PNG, and exported icns file
    4. Using IconDroplet, I created a usable icon
    5. Went to "Get Info" on both files and pasted new icon
I can't figure this out. Please help!

Finally! I'm pleased to say that I was informed of a solution today on another forum. I downloaded the program img2icns, and everything looks to be working how I want it to. Hopefully that helps you out, too! I'm marking this one 'solved.'

  • Installation Icon Disappears w/out installing w/out error msg

64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 on an ASUS laptop.  First noticed a problem with itunes - saying 'itunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration.'
I checked youtube on IE9, and the video and audio were fine.  On Chrome however, youtube gave me a msg about needing to install flash player.  Firefox gave me a msg about the plug-in for Shockwave being vulnerable and in need of updating.   I never bothered to check any version numbers and simply uninstalled Flash entirely using the Flash Uninstaller I downloaded from Adobe.
Now I have no flash player and, although I can run the Flash Installer, nothing ever happens.  If I download the installation executable, and dbl click ite, I get the UAC warning.  Clicking OK makes the icon disappear from my desktop without giving me any error message.
I have attempted to install by downloading and installing using safe mode with networking and gotten the same result.  I even tried first downloading in normal mode, restarting in safe mode, and installing.  The icon still disappears.
I'm not sure what I should be looking for in Event Viewer.
I have run sfc /scannow and no integrity violations were detected
I have run a Quick scan with MS Security Essential, and it was clean.  I am currently 7 minutes into a full scan.
    UPDATE
I saw that a fellow named Mike M replied to another poster just a few hours ago, and his suggetsion was to provide 2 direct install links - 1 for IE and 1 for the other browsers.  The IE install went perfectly, and I can now, once again play youtube videos in IE.  I had less success with the other install.  Firefox 26 gives me an error box about Shockwave not responding, and I can cancel or continue to see if it responds.  Continuing gives me 'An error occurred.  Please try again later'  It is the same video I successfully watched in IE.  Chrome gives me ''The Adobr Flash Player is required for videp playback and provides a link to get the latest Flash Player.  Of course, I thought I had just done that.

Having Flash Player up to date is one part of the battle. The other is Shockwave. If you do interactive stuff like Facebook games, or Pogo, you need to have Shockwave up to date too.
I recommend a "full clean install":
Download the following by right clicking and selecting wither "save target as" (IE) or "Save Link As" (Firefox):
    Flash Player Uninstaller
    Shockwave Player Uninstaller
Flash Player for ActiveX (Internet Explorer)
Flash Player Plug-in (All other browsers)
Shockwave Player 12 FULL Installer (other browsers)
Note: The following isn't a download, It's a link you'll NEED TO visit with IE to get to the Shockwave Player 12 FULL Intsaller (ActiveX for IE)
Save five above files to your Downloads folder. DON'T run anything yet.
    Reboot your system completely.
BEFORE opening anything else, go to your Downloads folder and run the Uninstallers.
Go to: C/Windows/System32 and delete the Macromed folder.
Go to: C/Windows/SysWOW64 and delete the Macromed folder.
Open your Registry Editor (Start>Run or press the Windows key + R and type "regedit" [minus the quotes] then click OK).
In the Registry Editor, go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE and delete the Macromedia folder.
Goto: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software and delete the other Macromedia folder.
Close the Registry Editor and empty your Recycle BIn.
Run the Flash Player ActiveX installer, the Flash Player (other browsers) installer, and the Shockwave FULL installer downloaded previously.
Then open IE and visit the above link to install the ActiveX FULL shockwave plugin. (Note: it says "11" but it's 12)
You've no doubt noticed I mentioned NOTHING about Chrome in all of this.
That's because Chrome uses its own "proprietary" build of Flash Player, and you CAN'T update or reinstall it here.
