Icons for file types

I recently installed some plugins to allow Quicktime (and iTunes, I imagine) to handle the free OGG format of media. However, OGG files, when downloaded, are set to open in Toast Titanium and receive a Toast-esque icon appropriately. When I changed the files (and all future OGG files) to open with Quicktime, the icon changed to a generic Document icon (blank page with corner curled). I know I can change the icon of a particular file using Get Info. Assuming I find or create an icon to represent OGG files, how do I change all future OGG files' icons to reflect this? Back in Windows I think this was called "file associations", but I could be wrong—and files were certainly less flexible there, I don't think a file could have it's own individual icon unless it were executable.

For the second tiem this week the answer to my problem with OS X is a re-boot. I'm used to that working on Windows but not on OS X. This kind of thing should not be happening but it is and it didn't used to happen.

  • Change icon for file type

    how to change icon for all of the tile type? not just one, but all!

    Changing the file icon will not enable Quicktime to play Matroska files. Changing the file suffix might.
    It could be a 'difficult' form of Matroska file. FYI Matroska is just a container like MOV or AVI, and some mkv have the video encoded with Real Video Codec (RV9 RV10). Perian+QT can't decode this, but VLC will play .mkv files just fine on OS X, as long as they don't use H.264!
    It's a bit of a lottery until Matroska decide to support the Apple platform. I have found this:
    http://mkv4mac.free.fr/index.php?lang=en&p=lec
    which may help.
    But there may be another workaround: 1. Get Info the mkv file
    2. Change to extension to wmv. Save as wmv and that could work better.
    Or this link may be helpful:
    http://www.squidoo.com/mkv-converter-mac
    Recently, a poster (ZachP14) suggested this:
    "There's a program called Plex that runs .mkv files awesome on my 2.0 ghz macbook."

    Maybe worth a try?

  • Icon for file created by an app

    I have an app, created with XDroplets, that launches IDLE to create Python scripts and the app has an icon that's different from IDLE's icon. I would like for the scripts created with IDLE *launched with this particular app* to have an icon that's different from the default system wide Python source file icon. How can I do this?

    I think the answer lies buried deep inside some plist
    file associated with the application.
    You're right. Icons for document types created by an application can be specified in the Info.plist found in the application bundle. Xcode gives you a GUI for setting up the Info.plist entries but I suppose you could edit the Info.plist file directly.
    See the Property List Key Reference that describes Info.plist entries. In particular you'll want to look at the CFBundleDocumentTypes array and the description of the keys contained within it.
    For a "real life" example you may also want to look inside another application bundle to see how it's Info.plist is set up. TextEdit, for example, defines several document types in it's Info.plist.

  • Changing The Preview Image for File Types

    Is there any way for me to change the image that shows up as the preview for file types? For example, I use OpenOffice and all my .doc files show up as blank pages of paper, which I don't like. I've tried to change this to no avail, from using the "Get Info" window to within the program itself. Any help?

    If you have an image that you want to use, do a Get Info on it, select the image at the top of the box and then copy from the Edit menu. Then on your OpenOffice document do a Get Info and paste the image into the little image icon at the top of the Get Info box.

  • Changing default open with for file type for all users

    hello
    can I change the default app to open a specific file type for all users and not juist for my user?
    i am admin for my mac mini.
    tnx
    gil

    What applications are offered for open with depends on the application itself informing the system it can open certain files, plus your own custom selections for opening files. Evidently the alternate app you want to use does not claim to be able to open the files you are assigning it. If you have a plist editor and know how to use it you could edit the info.plist file inside the application itself to add the file type you want to the application's declaration of file types it will open. Then restart so the system will read that declaration. I think it would be far easier to simply launch the application and then drop a file you want it to open onto its icon in the Dock.

  • Changing application or program recognition for file types

    I downloaded an .sit file and in my ignorance when prompted told iphoto to recognize this file type which of course it won't. I then downloaded Stuffit Expander, but when I click on the .sit file it still opens in iphoto. How do I tell the .sit file to open in another program?

    Single click on the file rather than double click and then go to the file menu and select"get info" In the resulting box that comes up navigate to the "open with" disclosure triangle and change it from iPhoto to Stuffit.
    You could also drag the file to the stuffit icon and drop it on it which should open the file. Some folks keep an alias of stuffit on their desktop or in the dock for this purpose.

  • Need information for file type conversion from Oracle

    Hi,
    I need a scenario where there is third party tool which supports file types (.lnb (Link Notebook Chart),.anb(Analyst Notebook Analytical Chart),.anx(Analyst Notebook Exchange Chart),.tcv(Text Chart Visualisation))
    I am having a Oracle database where I want to create a file from a Table so that the third party tool could understand
    the file supported types.
    Any help will be benefitial for me
    Thanks and Regards

    Hi,
    If I use as:
    DECLARE
    fileHandler UTL_FILE.FILE_TYPE;
    BEGIN
    fileHandler := UTL_FILE.FOPEN('test_dir', 'test_file.tcv', 'W');
    UTL_FILE.PUTF(fileHandler, 'Writing TO a file\n');
    UTL_FILE.FCLOSE(fileHandler);
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN utl_file.invalid_path THEN
    raise_application_error(-20000, 'ERROR: Invalid PATH FOR file.');

    If I use the file naming convention i.e extension type as .tcv will it support ?

  • JFileChooser Displays Garbage Icons for Files in 1.4.2-02

    Since switching from 1.3.1 to 1.4.2-02 I no longer get meaningful icons displayed beside file names by JFileChooser. What it is displaying do not look like anything meaningful. I suspect it is just grabbing some random chunk of memory and interpreting it as an icon. In 1.3.1 I got a folder icon for directories and a dog-eared piece of paper for files. I have not changed any of the code here, except to fix a bug where I was passing an invalid object (not a Component) to showOpenDialog, and the problem occurs both before and after that change. I appreciate that I can create a FileView to display whatever icons I want, but I do not understand why the default is garbage.
         JFileChooser chooser;
         String     directory     = parent.getProperty("directory", "");
         if (directory != "")
         chooser = new JFileChooser(directory);
         else
         chooser = new JFileChooser();
         // select only Text and Excel files, but permit multiples to be chosen
         chooser.addChoosableFileFilter(new TxtFileFilter());
         chooser.setFileFilter(new XlsFileFilter());
         chooser.setMultiSelectionEnabled(true);
         // display the dialog and wait for a response
         int option = chooser.showOpenDialog(desk);

    I have since determined that the problem is in FileSystemView.getSystemIcon, which returns a garbage icon on my system.

  • How to rename "Kind" for file types

    In finder, "Kind" describes file type. With my defaults
    .doc kind is "Microsoft Word 97 - 2004 document"
    .xls kind is "Microsoft Excel 97-2004 workbook"
    .ppt kind is "Microsoft PowerPoint 97-2004 presentation"
    .pdf kind is "Portable Document Format (PDF)"
    and so forth.
    I wish to edit the string describing the file type.
    Where is this string stored? How can I edit it?
    I am not trying to change the associated application, just the description under "Kind" in Finder for that application, or for the file type if that's how it's stored.
    It was easy in Windows XP, surely there is a way in OS-X.
    Thank you.

    Good answer, Barney, it worked. Thank you.
    For anyone trying to do this, here's more exactly what I did to change the "Kind" description for ".doc" files:
    In Finder, Applications folder, Microsoft Office 2008 folder, control-click Microsoft Word.app, select "Show Package Contents". In Contents folder, select info.plist.
    Open info.plist using Property List Editor.app, available on the OS-X distribution disks in the developer section.
    Next to "Root", option-click the disclosure triangle to see all values.
    Scan the values, edit the values by clicking on them.
    Warning: follow these instructions at your own risk.

  • How to set different icon for different type of document

    Hi,
    In my repository, we have different kinds of document (crystal report, word document, excel, jpg ...) and we wanna show specific icon for each kind. In my used ResourceRender I cann't see where to change (rnd:icon?)
    Could someone tell me how to achieve that? Thanks
    Ray

    Hi Ray Li,
    in KM icons are mapped to mime types. You can add a mapping or change an existing one as follows:
    1. Go to Systemadministrarion - System Configuration - Knowledge Management - Content Management - Utilities - Icons
    2. Add your mime mapping or change an existing one. To determine the correct mime type of your documents, just have a look at the details dialog in KM.
    3. The path to the icons points (by default) to following directory on your KM server: usr\sap\SID\SYS\global\config\cm\etc\public\mimes\images
    Here you can replace images or add some new.
    Hope this helps,
    Carsten
    Seems like somebody thought the same thought bit faster than I did. Would like to delete my answer that does not contain any additional info. But dunno how to.

  • Setting software preference for file types

    Hi all
    Can someone please tell me how you set a preference for different file types? For example, I want all .avi files to play using VLC player and not Quicktime. However, my computer automatically wants to use Quicktime. How do I change this? I have looked in Preferences and couldn't see an option.
    Thanks
    Steven

    Select an .avi file via the Finder and use Get Info for the file.
    At Open With, select the VCL player and below "use this application to open all documents like this", select Change All.

  • [CS3 INX] Values for file type in LnkI attribute?

    I've poked around in the C++ headers and all the relevant documentation I can find but can't find any definition of the possible values for the "file type" field in the Link Info array in CS3 INX files.
    Anyone know here I can find the list of possible values?
    I'm generating INX files with links and need to be able to generate the appropriate values based on the link targets.
    Thanks,
