Icons for some, not for others

I have some folders where the JPGs all show up in thumbnail/icon view as small versions of themselves. But in some folders, they only show up as the generic icons. If I drag a file that is showing up generic into a folder that's showing icons, it remains the generic icon. Anyone got a clue as to why this is happening and how to fix it? Thanks

Do they have correct name? I remember some images not showing previews, .JPGs, when I tried to open them from nautilus it warned me that they were actually .BMPs with a .JPG file extension and might pose a security risc... After changing the name, they worked.

Posting my icons for others

I'll start off by saying I haven't owned a computer since 1993. I'm slowly getting the hang of this, but I can't figure out how to host or post (not sure what it is called) my custom icons and folders for others to download. I've made them, and converted them to .icns but I can't even show them to anyone unless I use a camera to take a pic of the screen. If there's a program or any advice I'd greatly appreciate it.

You can use what is called a 'screen shot' to capture an image of the screen and then post it online or create compressed files for downloads...lots of options, so the onus it on the user to ramp their skills

Artwork shows on some, not on others

I am a new Ipod user, but am by no means computer illiterate. This program may cause me to reconsider. After losing 800 songs to I tunes, I am in the process of installing all 5000, ten at a time to see which ones go in and don't.... Not the point.
I have been playing with downloading album artwork from Amazon, and adding it to my file info. Now I have noticed that not all of it transferred. I tried the delete all album artwork, then reattching all album artwork from the sync page, but no dice.
Any Ipod/Itunes genius able to help me?

As far as the losing of the songs goes, I have been collecting for years, and have aquired from many different sources. All are saved as *.mp3. I tried to take the directory on my desktop that held my tunes, open it, select all, and drag and drop into I-tunes. Worked, but not all of them went, and when you have a bunch of tunes, it is difficult to determine which did and didn't. Now, I am installing them by placing my backup cd's (mp3) in, adding them to a folder, and installing the new songs 10 at a time. That way, I can catch what is/isn't making it, then force them in by right click, open with ITunes.
Pain in the butt, but is working. (Though VERY slowly) any suggestions to speed it up?

On one of my computers, the tool bar includes an icon for radio stations and a calculator, but those do not appear on my other computer. Are these add-ons? How do I add them to my other computer?

Some of the icons could also be bookmarks, note the bookmark toolbar does not display in Firefox 4 by default to get it back

I have no idea what may have caused your MacBook to stop working, but from your description it kind of sounds like it may have started before you ran Software Update and installed the new Apps. Just the general slow feeling and bugginess is what tips me off. You said that you weren't sure if you had closed all open windows, that doesn't matter if the computer restarts itself. It automatically closes all other open applications when restarting.
As to your data being retrievable, if when you take it in they do a fresh install of the OS, then no, it will not be unless you want to pay several thousand dollars to a software retrieval company.
I am glad to hear that you have taken into the Apple Store to get it fixed, and that you have all of your purchased music backed up to your iPod. You should be able to just transfer it all back to iTunes once you get your computer back should it be necessary.
As a side note, the proper place for this topic would probably in the MacBook forums, not iTunes since there is no evidence that iTunes started the issue.

Just downloaded an album, will let me play some songs, but others are asking for me to authorize my computer. When I enter Use ID and password, comes back and says computer is already authorized. Why will it let me play some songs and not others?

If just some of the tracks on the album are giving you that message, that suggests that those tracks are damaged.
If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the tracks and try redownloading fresh copies. For instructions, see the following document:

Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".

You can try a direct connection and select No Proxy in the connection settings.
You can find the connection settings in "Tools > Options > Advanced : Network : Connection"
Also do a malware check with a few malware scan programs. 
You need to use all programs because each detects different malware. 
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database before doing a scan.

I can only see some of the info (e.g. the email Facebook gives you) for some friends in Contacts. I can see everything for others. Their b-days aren't listed in my Contacts (but these friends have their B-days on their profile on FB). Can anyone help?

I can only see some of the information of my Facebook friends in my Contacts. For example, a friend has a birthday today. I received an email that she and another friend have birthdays this week. I received a notification on my iPhone and iPad that her birthday was today. It was never displayed in my Notification Center or Calendar beforhand, like it's displayed for other friend's (for other friends, it's displayed in the Notification Center, with the Calendar icon, 1 day before). I looked at every setting I could think of and the Help pages on Facebook. Nothing is working. My friend with the birthday today has her birthday openly listed on her Profile information on her Facebook page. In my contacts, her Facebook email (the one Facebook assigns you when you join) is listed. However her picture and birthday are not listed. I displayed my Facebook Contacts only, and roughly 20 showed up and not the rest. It's like the devices are not recognizing those people and putting their information in the respective places. I have an iPad 3rd Gen, iPhone 5, and MacBook Pro (purchased in January 2013. I hope that helps) and ALL the software updates are current. Can anyone help? Also, my MacBook cannot access my Contacts from Yahoo. Despite my typing in the correct password repeatedly as well as deleting and adding the Yahoo account again. I'd be grateful for any and all help. Thank you.

The other day I had downloaded the latest version of Firefox and now none of the icons for the different websites I normally go to are there?

As I said, the other day I had downloaded the latest version of Firefox and after doing so none of the icons for the different websites that normally go to are no longer there. Websites such as MSNBC, MSN, Most visited, that entire strip is no longer visible. I tired resetting Firefox and still nothing. Can anyone tell me how to get them to appear again? It's a hassle every time that I want to go to one of those sites I have to type it in the search bar, instead of just clicking on it as I did before. Please keep in mind if you answer, that I'm still learning about these things called computers and not very well versed in some of the things that you experts know:) Thanks

On Windows XP Firefox shows the menu bar by default and not the orange Firefox menu button that is shown when the menu bar is hidden. 
The menu bar is the toolbar at the top that shows menu items like File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, Help. 
You can press the F10 key or tap the Alt key to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily in case this bar is hidden (View > Toolbars or Firefox > Options).
The Navigation Toolbar shows the Back and forward button and the input field where you type the address of a site that you want to visit (aka location bar) and also has a search bar where you can type items that you want to look up with a search engine (Google).

Request for advice: TM/TC fails on one Macbook Pro, but not the other?

Dear All- looking for some advice.
Background: I installed a 1TB TC about 3 months ago to improve the wireless connectivity around the home/small business and to act as 1 stop backup- primarily for 2 main Macbook Pro’s. Everything seems to work fine, with the exception that the time machine will only successfully back up one Macbook Pro (my wife's) and not the other (mine). In fact I have NEVER been able to get a full successful backup for my machine since I bought my TC.
Scenario: My wireless router from my TC services 2 Macbook Pro’s, 1 iMac, iPhone, Sony PSP, Sony PS3 etc. All successfully and at a good speed. The TC also runs time machine for backups on the 2 Macbook Pros. One MBPro (my wife’s), has worked like a charm and flawless (pre Oct 2008 model 4.1, 2.5Ghz Intel core 2 Duo, 4GB (667MHz)DDR2 SDRAM, OSX 10.5.8, 250GB HD, 512MB video). TM Backup over wireless to my TC works great. While the other (mine) I have NEVER been able to get a successful backup once (MBPro post Nov 2008 model 5.1, 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB (1067MHz) DDR3 RAM, OSX 10.5.8, 300GB HD, 768MB Video).
Problem: I have tried a number different combinations of backup without success. I have diligently read numerous posts before coming here. My attempts include, preferences resets, full disk erases (re-named the disk several times), wireless connectivity, hardwired connectivity (i.e no other devices connected), some software running/ no software running, in sleep mode/without sleep mode, all at once backup or intermittent backups.
All provide me with the same message that it is not able to complete a full backup due to a writing error ‘Backup Failed’. At this stage I would not be convinced that the TC is actually working properly, with the exception that it works flawlessly with my wife’s Macbook Pro (yes every time I erase the drive) and that the wireless connectivity is great. My account preferences and setup/access for the TC/TM are identical to the machine that works. The volume I am trying to backup on my machine is ~258GB, while my wife’s machine that works is only around 78GB. I thought this may still be the source of the failure, but cannot see a work around or why.
Considering I bought the TC to allow a solid reliable backup, I am still unhappy and would like to continue to work for a resolve. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Apologies if you have already tried this, but I couldn't find it in your detailed list of prior actions.
Note the exact name of your hard drive on your computer. If you haven't changed this, it will be named Macintosh HD
Open Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Click on the icon on the left side of the window that has the exact same name as your hard drive on the desktop
Click Repair Disk Permissions
It will probably take several hours to do this, so allow plenty of time.
Once the process is complete, see if you can backup now.

Icon Preview is not shown for mp3 files in finder

Hi. Recently I noticed icons of mp3 files are no longer as used to be in finder. Previously I had a dark music note icon and when i hover my mouse there was a play button. Now I only see itunes icon in mp3 files. "Show Icon Preview" option is enabled, and i can preview image and pdf files in finder. But something happened to the mp3 files. It is very annoying. Please guide me to get back the good old icon preview for mp3 files.

Displaying icons as previews of files
In Finder windows and on the desktop, the icons for files can appear as thumbnail previews of the file contents. For example, instead of seeing a generic icon for a PDF file, you can see a miniature version of what’s in the PDF file. If you “hover” over the icon for a movie or sound file, you’ll see a Play button, which you can click to view the movie or hear the sound. (If you don’t see a Play button, enlarge the icon.)
NOTE:If you’re using Cover Flow view, you’re already previewing files and don’t need to change any settings.

Blank icons for some programs on dock

A few days ago, one of the programs I run frequently (World of Warcraft) began appearing as a blank icon on the dock. By "blank icon" I mean there is nothing there but an empty space, through which you can see the background image. There is the little lit circle underneath it, of course, to indicate a running program. I do not keep in icon for this game on the dock.
Today, it started happening to some other programs. As with World of Warcraft, this is only happening (so far) to programs I do not keep on the dock when they're not running. It's happening to Firefox, and just recently, it happened for System Preferences. However, it does not happen for all programs that aren't kept on the dock. I tried running two other programs, one that came with OS X (Chess) and one that did not (some game like Windows' Minesweeper), and it didn't happen for either of them.
What should I do to fix this?

Open Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter:
killall Dock
Press RETURN. The "D" in Dock must be capitalized.
See if that helps. You can also try deleting the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist file.

Hide disclosure icon for some nodes

Hi,
For some nodes with children, I would like hide the
disclosure icon; for some not.
How can I do that?
I tried disclosure._visible = false in the function
setValue(node, state) of my custom TreeRow Renderer extended from
mx.controls.treeclasses.TreeRow. It did not work though.
For other embedded moviclip in a tree, it seems I can
control, i.e. nodeIcon, cell.

What is the work around for not being able to see icons for folders. I want to be able to copy and paste image icons in the GET INFO windows.

I have always used images for my folder icons, and now I am told that Mt. Lion does not allow me to go to the GET INFO window and do a click on the image icon and then be able to paste that image on to other folders. I just talked with a Apple support guy and he said that Mt. Lion does not support this function. He did say that there are third party programs that allow using images to make icons for folders or other items. I can see some image icon in some of my hard drive folders....... some folders show image icons while others do not. I am a photographer and have scads of photo folders spread all over different hard drives, and I find it easier to find what I am looking for by just looking at the IMAGE PICTURE in the different folders on my hard drives, than by having to read the one or two words associated with each folder.
THe support guy said to request that APPLE put back the ability to use the coy paste function in the GET INFO window. If i can't get this working like it was I wouyld like to know how to get a refund and throw out Mt Lion.

Restore your Lion bootable backup/clone or Time Machine backup and file your ML bug report. Just keep the installer ($20 USD isn't worth the hassle trying to get it refunded). Then, when the function's restored, reinstall and run Software Update.

Icons for Aliases not Showing up...

I like to organize my apps into folders of aliases. I do this by dragging them into folders holding option and command. For some reason the icons are not showing up for the aliases for many applications. Here is a video.

Okay - that one worked.
So, the issue is not that icons, the aliased items, are missing per se, it is that the aliases are displaying an incorrect icon.
The incorrect icon appears to be a modified .zip icon. Why that is being used, I don't know unless it is a combination of how the app is written and whether it complies fully with OS X programming requirements. An alias is functionally nothing more than an icon and a pathname. The OS should grab the icon to be used from the resources in the source file. However, if that is miswritten somehow then the OS might grab any icon; for some reason it may be 'remembering' the icon used by the original download for the item.
This happens often with documents (image files, text files, etc.) when aliases are made to them - since what appears to be a custom icon is often a temp one created on the fly by Preview, it does not survive to the alias, which gets displayed with a generic icon.
One thing you can try to see if it will fix it - do a Get Info on the alias, and also on the original of that alias. Then copy the icon from the upper left of the original's Get Info window and paste it over the wrong icon in the Get Info window for the alias. This is tedious, but need be done only once for each item. If you need additional aliases for the same item, just copy (Duplicate in Finder's File menu, or Option-drag it) the alias with the good icon.
