Icons generic, Cannot rebuild desktop - what to reinstall?

Hello,
The power supply on my MDD has recently been replaced, and I've noticed freezing in OS 9. The repair shop tech suggested some fixes:
1. rebuilding the desktop
2. trashing finder and system folder prefs
3. archive reinstall
On trying to rebuild the desktop, I got a flashing dialog box saying the finder needs your attention and to restart. This happened several times, so I assume I somehow can't rebuild the desktop. (And Alsoft Disk Warrior won't let me rebuild the Mac HD, as it is the start up drive)
And 2. I tried trashing the system prefs. - and included the desktop startup prefs.(I think) Since I was led to believe these would regenerate on the restart...though I may have trashed one that didn't) Because evidently my video files (Quicktime, and the 3rd party video editing system application that uses them, no longer show up in the file list as icons, but as generic document (page with corner turned down) icons.
How can I restore the icons and also be able to rebuild the desktop? I certainly don't want to lose my video files (there must be thousands) or have to replace all the applications, so I think I have to do an archive and install (???).
It's been so long since I did that, and that was back in the Apple Care support days, so could someone please advise? I have all the discs that came with the computer, and I'm thinking I need to do this from one or more of the Software Restore discs, 1-4
Many thanks.
Keith

Hey Tex,
(First off, the other guy's reply here has nothing to do with my issue..)
OK, so I checked out your advice and spent hours trying to recover the icons and rebuild - - no such luck.
I finally got my icons back by reinstalling the NLE program but now, since I tried the first suggestions in the Apple doc., and after it said to turn off the extensions, create another set and what not, that caused more problems than I started out with. I think I rebooted about 25 times...so if there was ever a grown man close to tears, it was me.
The only thing I don't have now is DV in and out in OS 9. I have spent more hours trying out different extension sets that I had - some of which used to work fine, but now I'm unable to get a picture on my monitor or even an exchange with my camcorder when either are connected via firewire. And I'm not even getting the external drive to show up on the desktop - but it does in OS X - so I know there's some extension that needs to be tweaked, but I'll be d**ned if I have to go through all those settings turning them on and off for another 4 or 5 hours...
Help please OR ANY ONE!! I'm at my limit...and so discouraged. The solution's probably something incredibly simple. If anyone had once told me I'd end up as a slave to a computer I would never have believed them

It means it's damaged or somehow incompatible with your current configuration. Reinstall it.

A warm welcome to Apple discussions!
A 2003 iMac cannot support Snow Leopard 10.6; you'd need an Intel processor and that cannot be retrofitted to your Mac. What does "About this Mac" in your Apple menu say  for your processor speed? What does it say about how much RAM you have?
If the processor is 1ghz or faster, you can run OS 10.5; otherwise, you are maxed out at 10.4.11.
Also, are you running any commercial ("pay for") anti-virus or security software? They are notorious for slowing most Macs to a fraction of their speed potential.
A too-full hard drive can drag down performance, especially if you don't have a lot of physical RAM installed. If you single-click your hard drive icon and then do command i, you'll see the disk usage. Looks like this:
The value for "Used" should be no more than about 90 percent of "Capacity." In the example image, that drive has about 34 percent of its space used and 66 percent free--more than enough. Please post what you see for your Capacity and Used numbers
There are a few more things we might check but this is a good start.
    Awaiting your information,
    Allan

  • Generic disk icon for iPod on Desktop.

    Hi,
I hope somebody can help me fix this. On desktop I have a generic disk image icon for my iPod, I would like to have the old iPod icon but it won't change on desktop. On the other hand, on save and open dialogs, the iPod icon is correct.
What do I need to have fixed on desktop so it shows the icon I want for my iPod?
Archive and Install is not a solution, already done that.
I really don't want to do an erase and install.
BTW, when creating a new user all icons are correct on desktop.
    Thanks,
    AJ

While logged into the other admin account, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option, recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the new account. If the problem's are solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.

  • Newly installed firefox has left an blue "drive" icon on my (Mac) desktop that I cannot erase. When I click on firefox in applications, it always brings this up and won't start firefox directly. I cannot erase this "firefox" drive icon, it won't let me. E

The icon is blue with a white firefox logo on it. My only options are to "Burn 'Firefox'" or "Eject 'Firefox'" when I click on it to edit it, but I cannot cut, paste, or move to trash. It won't let me. When I click on "Eject 'firefox'" it says "The disc firefox is in use and could not be ejected". Even when I am running no applications whatsoever.
When I click on this icon, a small window appears with two icons in it: one the firefox browser icon, and the other the applications folder icon with an arrow inbetween the two. When I drag the icon into the application folder it tells me:
"An item named 'firefox' already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the one you're moving?"
And no matter how many times I "replace it" the icon never goes away.
And no matter how many times I replace it, whenever I click on the firefox icon in applications, it brings up this tiny window on my desktop before it will actually start running the firefox web-browser. And it will never reload my previously saved tabs is also my main concern.

== a few weeks ago since I installed...

Maybe you copied the icon show in the window to your application and into your dock directly. Try closing your Firefox again. Eject the disc again. Then go to your application folder. You should see Firefox with a circle and cross through it. Open it. It should open without the blue icon appearing on your desktop again.

Those are just shortcuts to open the application. Go to your Applications folder and open Mail from there. You can drag the Mail application from the applications folder back down to your dock.

  • How to remove Homegroup and Libraries icons from 7 RC desktop (after Vista upgrade)?

I took the plunge and upgraded my Vista 64 to Win 7 RC. The upgrade process lasted over 6 hours (some 300GB on my C:drive with Vista), but, once completed, it has been working really very fast & smoothly. The original Vista system is backed up of course on an external HDD.
What annoys me though, are 2 stubborn system icons on my 7RC desktop, Homegroup and Libraries. I don't use Homegroup and Libraries can be accessed via Taskbar or Start menu, so I want to get rid of these two icons, but they cannot be remove from the desktop as such, like "normal" icons.
Personalize -> Change Desktop Icons doesn't seem to offer any solution for these 2 icons.
I never had those desktop icons on earlier clean installs of Win7 Beta (on separate dual boot HDD), only now after the massive Vista->7RC upgrade.
I also have retained an earlier "unofficial" other Win 7 7100 on another HDD (with less installed apps.), for comparison.
Is there any registry hack or other method to remove these desktop icons?
I'd be grateful for a solution.

    After hours of being annoyed........
    1. Homegroup Icon:
open my computer, control panel, system and security, administrative tools, services, then scroll down to: homeGroup listener and homeGroup provider, disable both. close out, log off. the icon should be gone when you log back on.
    2. Libraries Icon: carefully.......please, if no experience in registry get help.
go to: start, run, type in: regedit, select the HKEY_Local_Machine key, navigate down finding: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace
You will see several hexadecimal strings, select each one in turn, and the right pane will show you which icon is being selected. my library icon was the very first string and showed two lines on the right side of the page, first being: usersLibraries and the second being: remove message.
when you find the appropriate library string, make a new folder in your my documents named: registry back up, then highlight the string on the left, go up to the top left of the registry page and click on, file then export. save the registry file in your new folder location. I also saved the two files on the right side of the page and named them what they were called on the page, so I would know what they were. (not sure I had to but did)
After saving the registry files, next you can delete the string you have highlighted on the left which in turn, shows the name userLibraries (on the right side of the page).
Poof it is finally Gone! available in your saved folder
    Hope this helps

  • My screen icons are lost.. What shall I do?

my screen icons are lost.. What shall I do?

The following are general fixes to try.  Others may have more specific fixes to try.
If you have a recent Time Machine or other backup then you should skip the following backup step until your machine is healthy again.
Backup:  As soon as you can, make a copy of your internal data on an external drive using Time Machine, Disk Utility or a third party backup program (such as Carbon Copy Cloner).  You will need a blank external disk for this purpose.  If you do not yet have a backup then this is an especially important step.  For example, if you can boot in safe mode then you should be able to run a backup even before you attempt other steps.  For backup instructions see step 9 in the document listed below.
    Try booting in safe mode:
    - Restart and when you hear the bong, hold down the shift key for a (slow) Safe Boot that disables startup items.
    - Use disk utility check and repair possible errors in the system disk filesystem.  (Step 11.)
    - If it reports it found errors it cannot fix, try reboot holding down the command and R keys and run Disk Utility from there too repair the system disk filesystem.
If this does not work refer to the following comprehensive repair document.  Start with steps 1 through 5.  It won't hurt to start there even though the initial steps might not fit your symptoms.  It is a large document but the information you need is on only a few pages.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3353
After trying steps 1 though five, if that does not fix it, step 12 might be useful (OnyX Cache Cleaning) or step 8 (Reinstall just OS X).  Do not attempt step 8 unless you have a good backup (two good backups preferred).
Once you are up and running make sure you maintain two (not just one) backups on two several drives in case you are ever in an emergency situation again.  https://discussions.apple.com/message/23364928#23364928

  • IPad 2 icons go missing from desktop on rotating basis

As stated, iPad 2 icons go missing from desktop on rotating basis. My iPad was new as of Xmas day. I have NOT synced to iTunes (I don't want to at this time) and I have NOT upgraded the software to iOS 5.0.1 (still on 5.0).
I have downloaded about twenty apps; five of which cost money from Apple's app store.
I don't get it. This is a new device that I have been using for less than ten days for only an hour or two a day; I don't believe new purchasers of iPads should be having to contend with icons going missing (icons take turns disappearing when swiping back and forth between the pages of app icons, the names of icons remain, however).
I have re-booted the iPad. At first the icons all reappear and all seems well until about an hour of usage of opening up various apps and using them, and then the problem re-appears. I have done this three times now, and have resorted to just contending with the problem as the apps will still launch and they run fine, it is just that the full icon doesn't appear (only the name of the app and a missing icon above the name of the app):
I am thinking the cause could be due to one of two problems/issues, but wonder what others' thoughts are.
1). Glitchy App. If it is due to a glitchy app (and does not Apple test these apps before giving the all -clear to be downloaded from the Apple app store?), how best to figure out which one it is?
    2) Glitchy OS (iOS 5.0). If this is due to a glitchy 5.0 iOS, is there no other choice than to upgrade to 5.0.1? I really do not want to do that just yet unless it is necessary. [And if it is necessary, would Apple really release a glitchy iOS knowing ahead of time it had problems? Seems strange....]
Anyone got any ideas or have been experiencing the same issue (is it a known issue)?

And if you restore as new, you can re download the apps for free as long as you are using the same apple id.
If it was a single bad app, you would have said so.  If it was a common problem with the os, it would have been reported by a zillion users.
I think your os got corrupted. ( potentially from a bad app, or maybe just gremlins). It is a new machine, just start over.  Reload the apps in small groups so that if it is a bad app, you can narrow the issue down.

We don't know because update function is hidden so deep in the Menu bar's help item that many people don't even know about it.  Now you are telling us that an icon is on your desktop so this is completely unusual.
Are you sure it is not the icon for the PSE10 to make it easy for you to launch it?  Can you post a screenshot of what is on your desktop.

  • Downgrade package which provides some icon features in mate-desktop

    Hello
A couple of days ago a standard pacman update seriously messed my system. It updated the kernel and/or my nvidia drivers, but on reboot X wouldn't start properly because the nvidia driver module wouldn't load properly. After much playing about and googling, I enabled the testing repository to get access to the kernel headers that went with my new kernel. Unfortunately, this installed a shed load of 'testing' packages that I have been trying to downgrade ever since. It took me a *long* time get my 'mate' desktop working. I disabled testing, and used the 'downgrade' tool to downgrade using pacman's cache. Clearly there are packages I've missed.
Here is a screenshot of my nautilus in MATE. As you see, several of the menu buttons have this 'icon missing' icon. Can anyone advise what package deals with these (I *think* I have downgraded gtk etc back to how they were before these problems, but to know avail...)

    When I ran
